It's not that the White Sox didn't bring back Thome.
It is that they are conceding to Ozzie Guillen’s “rotating DH” plan. That is reason for panic.

This is why it's so stupid.
If they said they didn’t want to bring back Thome because he was too old and/or they were worried he’d regress and/or they were concerned about some kind of health risk, I could understand that. But instead they’ve publicly committed themselves to a principle that essentially precludes anyone else from coming in to DH because it will take AB’s away from the Three-headed Carousel of Suck. Neither Delgado nor Branyan fit into this scenario.
This is Ozzie trying to prove himself to be some kind of master tactician. It’s a total ego-play and what I find utterly baffling is that Reinsdorf and Kenny are allowing him to potentially squander this pitching staff.
But I guess I'm
open to the idea of rotating the DH position. Why not? If it adds some variety and matchup advantages, then I’m for it. It’s better than watching Thome strike out on 3 pitcher from a left hander.
I'm open to the idea of rotating good players

This is a huge negative for Ozzie
in my book. I’ve been an ardent Ozzie supporter. He can do all of the bloviating about “smart ball” etc. all he wants. When he is actually able to impose those idiotic ideas on player acquisiton and we wind up with an inferior team then it may be time for him to go.

if the story is that it was the front office who wanted a DH and Ozzie who didn’t, shame on the front office for not being able to get across to Ozzie one of about fifteen reasons why this is a dreadful decision (yay alliteration!).

hire competent managers and trust them to do their job without micro-managing them. i believe jr said, “if we are going to hold a manager accountable, we should give him what he wants.” now ozzie needs to win with his team and if he doesn’t, he will be judged accordingly. Kotsay/Jones/Vizquel is essentially a daily lineup feature. Moving paulie from 1B to DH doesn’t help the offense any. He’s a deck chair.

I think 2 of Jones/Kotsay/Vizquel will be starting a lot of games. Not close to a majority of the games or anything, but I think Ozzie will sit Alexei a lot at the beginning of the season.

Here’s the thing…
Imagine a scenario where the 8 other batters in the lineup are playing extremely well and you also somehow catch lightning in a bottle with Andruw Jones at DH. Are you still going to rotate the DH? I mean amongst those 9 players that’s fine I suppose, but if the 8 position players plus Jones are having good years, there is no reason to bring in Kotsay or Vizquel. Which just proves the point that you might as well have an everyday DH. If Ozzie is worried about resting his players so they don’t get hurt, then that’s BS. These guys get paid big money to play everyday no questions asked. They shouldn’t have to have built in guaranteed days off at the DH spot. And giving them those days off in no way guarantees they won’t get injured. DUMB!!!

I think this a plan…I think it has nothing to do with a revolving dh, or a thome. Its a plot to get the the hot stove bitch reporters looking at somthing dumb that means shit while KW pulls of a sneak attack move to trade vizquel jones and the hawk to the padres for A.Gon and linebrink to seatle for figgins, lee and cash. I’m not shocked but I guess I’m rather numb. I love Ozzie but this is flat wrong. This is pure ego at work as he wants to invent the wheel. It doesn’t matter if its ultimately successful, its still wrong.
Nothing changes about the 3 scenarios that I posted earlier this week. I don’t think this cost them the division or anything, however the way it eventually went down makes me disappointed in Williams. You gave Ozzie his way on Swisher. That blew the fuck up. You have to save him from himself. Not hard handed. Schmooze him the way you did Peavy and others. Talk him into it.
Its not really the player. Its what he represents.

Deciding to play without a DH in the AL is a poor decision.
Personally, I’m thinking I won’t enjoy watching the games as much as I thought I would this summer and that’s disappointing. I think we’ll see a pretty bad offense with LOTS of bunting and LOTS of running into outs on the basepaths in vain attempts at SBs and “making something happen.” But maybe it will put to rest the myth that the Sox couldn’t score because they didn’t have a small-ball lineup that could manufacture runs.

I’m sure the personnel acquisition I dislike most will be Vizquel. I’m not talking about the DH thing, so technically I think I can post this. I think Ozzie will play Vizquel in the field a lot — so much that it will have been a mistake to let Ozzie have that option.
So, prior to the season, I’m listing Omar as the presumptive favorite for the “Darin Erstad Memorial Award for Most Over-Used Aging Veteran That The Media Loves Because He Plays The Right Way”.
