you're right.
the difference is far more than just thome. so the white sox just handed the twins an even greater advantage.
I'll admit I was very emotional at time of posting, but I see this as more of a symbolic gesture; denying the acquisition of a real bat because he truly wants to make sure Kotsay gets in enough ABs.
So yes, I think it’s representative of the Twins gaining the edge on the division by some extension of the imagination and knowing Ozzie.

Everyone seems to hate Andruw Jones on this board. He’s a capable . Also, has anyone given thought to the sox trying to go after Carlos Delgado? He’s essentially Jim Thome just a couple years younger (and he speaks Spanish, bonus for Ozzie!). He might go for a cheap contract to resurrect his career. I'm not a huge stat guy to be honest but
He hit more homers, could play the field and wasn’t as much of a turtle on the base paths and was not an almost guaranteed out against left handed pitching which I think are the reasons that Ozzie wanted to go in a different direction.
I stopped reading at I’m not a huge stat guy ;p
but look at Thome’s splits. He would of been an absolute beast as a DH vs RHP and at 1.5mm it would of been an absolute steal.

that Ozzie isn’t just going by the stats. I think he feels that Thome will need a substantial amount of at bats to be effective. Also the positives he would give in limited at bats will not be greater than the negatives he would supply on the base paths.

This isn’t about Thome. It’s about a brand of Baseball. Ozzie doesn’t want to play station-to station baseball anymore. I’m tired of seeing it myself. In the years that Thome was here, that’s what we got.
Having Konerko and Thome together in this lineup makes it tough to produce runs and keep rallies alive. It’s no different than the ‘03 and ’04 teams when we had Carlos Lee and boppers all through the lineup. It wasn’t until ‘05 when we got Iguchi and players that could advance on hit and runs and score from 2nd, let alone 1st base that we got better offensively. Yet we still hit for power too. I think that’s what Ozzie has in mind.
I’m shocked so many people aren’t tired of seeing that on the base paths. That’s why I believe Ozzie didn’t want him back. It’s not all about the stats.
Who was our DH in 05? Oh yea, a base clogger.
The DH spot should be occupied by a masher.
Iguchi played 2b, not DH.

I believe it's a term reserved for un-clutch guys who pathetically rely on hitting home runs to get around the bases and also rely on other hitters to bring them home when they've been freely walked onto the basepaths.

To me It’s a guy who standing on 2nd that can’t score on a base hit. If you have 2 of them on like Konerko and Thome on base at the same time then you have a harder time scoring runs
and then when you quantify those things in the aggregate
it turns out getting on base and hitting home runs matters way way way way way way more. surprise. earl weaver knew a thing or two!

and that’s not even the point I was making. It’s about what worked to make the Sox successful in ‘05. Having a bunch of slow guys in the lineup can affect run production. Ozzie had more options and versatility in his lineup then. That’s why he let Thome go. He wants more versatility in the lineup.

They are both slow and old. Switching from Thome to Kotsay/Jones is not a move away from station to station
I think Ozzie just has a wet dream of having a rotation of players that can play the field and DH. When the entire organization says it is a good idea to sign Thome and Ozzie is the one saying no, he is more likely than not in the wrong.
Thome would get easily 350+ PA as a DH versus RHP. Look at every other DH in the league. They are generally base cloggers. The Angels succeeded with rotating DHs because they had that luxury.
Ask Ozzie how many errors the DH position committed last season? Guess it does not matter since they don’t play the field.

if Thome had signed a $6 million dollar deal no one on this board would be complaining. Its that we lost Thome because we didn’t want to disrespect him by not giving him at bats. Then the next day our rival Twins sign him for chump change at 1.5 million and he took essentially the same bench role for the Twins that the White Sox would have had for him.
If the same thing happens with Dye… and he signs for $3million elsewhere to play DH full time expect the same uproar.

I'm impressed with the ability of people to use this logic.
If the White Sox had Jason Kubel, no one would give 2 fucks about Jim Thome. If they had Damon, Nick Johnson, Matsui, Vlad, Abreu, Cust, Delgaod, no one would really care.
We have Andruw Jones and Mark Kotsay. How they are comparable to any of the potential FA signings Kenny could have made to replace Thome is beyond me. I don’t care they refused to sign Thome, I’m appalled that Kenny and Ozzie actually think they will win the division with this offense.

The issue is not Jim Thome (though his detractors here are rather severely underrating him). The issue is that we have a giant, yawning hole at a position that he is nearly ideally suited to fill.
It’s not that the move (or, to be accurate, lack of move) is so incredibly damaging as much as that it’s so incredibly stupid.

I especially enjoyed the assertion that the Sox hadn’t made the playoffs since acquiring Thome. That would have been sublime if Dils had followed by the asserting that Thome never hit a HR when it counted, but it was still enjoyable on its own.

Apologies if this sentiment has been expressed
as I only made it halfway down the page before giving up, but the concept that we’re going to win more games with Mark Kotsay and Andruw Jones as opposed to Jim Thome is laughable.
To wax poetic for a moment, as a fan in Baltimore, Thome is one of the only Sox players I’ve ever met. Talked with me for a few minutes about game 163, even messed with my friend in O’s gear. Just a class act.
Whatever. Maybe Peavy gets those at-bats he wanted after all.
