Evidently Andruw Jones is still okay defensively, he looked pretty chubby whilst winning a shitload of gold gloves as well!
The world needs the Jedi now more than ever
The only way for this DH situation to not completely blow up in their face
is if Jones has some sort of miraculous rebound season.
"I call Dotel, got his ass kick. I call Linebrink, got his ass kick. Everybody I call is the wrong guy. I guess it's my fault!"
And, in the process, becomes the "full-time DH", thus completely going against their alleged plan.
"I call Dotel, got his ass kick. I call Linebrink, got his ass kick. Everybody I call is the wrong guy. I guess it's my fault!"
Ideally you'd want Jones in the field and Quentin at full time DH, right?

ah, fuck it. I know nothing of the future.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
Well, my point was, Jones playing - and playing shockingly well - no matter the position.
The Jones-Quentin question will be answered soon enough. My guess – based on virtually nothing concrete (I’ve never seen Q in RF, and none of us know what Jones can still do) is that the difference will be negligible.
"I call Dotel, got his ass kick. I call Linebrink, got his ass kick. Everybody I call is the wrong guy. I guess it's my fault!"
the vagaries of defensive metrics.
i don’t think anyone would dispute that both jones and quentin have good arms. i’d call that a wash.
as you can see from the link, in a somewhat small sample size, quentin was rated very good in RF for arizona (and scouting reports on him were nearly universal in praise of his defense). in 2008, he was below average in LF. last season, the wheels came off but a whole lot of that can probably be chalked up to his lack of mobility due to injury.
assume that he is healthy and able to move like he was prior to the injury (a safe assumption, though how long-lasting can be debated). you can probably reasonably say he wasn’t as good a defender as he was rated in 06/07 and not as bad as he was rated in 08. maybe expect him to be about average in RF.
with respect to jones, he looked and was rated as having a significant skill decline in 2008 on defense (some argue in 2007, as well, though at least UZR doesn’t back that up). 2009 is really small so can’t draw much from that. maybe jones really is in good, or better, shape. but after watching him waddle around for the last two or three years, i can’t say i’m either optimistic about that or his defense. he’s got some age and injury on him, too. i’d be reticent to expect much more than average from him, as well. i’d be much more confident about him being good on defense than to expect a bounce on offense, though. suppose that’s a good attribute for a 4th outfielder.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=6274&position=OF
The good thing is that the baseline for RF has been set astronomically low by Dye
so even Quentin or Jones at -5 is a rather large upgrade, at least according to fangraphs.
Very true.
Unfortunately, he still hit 27 homers even though he was legally dead for half the season. Those will be missed.
"I call Dotel, got his ass kick. I call Linebrink, got his ass kick. Everybody I call is the wrong guy. I guess it's my fault!"
That's not something I'm overly worried about
as far as a direct comparison from last year to this year, Dye’s glove was so bad to cancel out any offensive contributions. I didn’t realize that he actually ended up below replacement level.
If he were a DH, he'd be rated better defensively.
Oh, the wonders of WAR.

Best Lineup Question
I’m thinking out loud here, but is it possible that given the team as it’s currently constructed, we’d actually be better off making Teahen our DH, shifting Beckham back to 3B, Ramirez back to 2B, and using Vizquel as our full-time SS? Would the runs we’d save on defense make up for Vizquel’s terrible offense and the lack of production at DH (which we’re already anticipating anyways)?
Can Vizquel play a full season at this point?
That’s probably out of the question. Normally I’d also mention Teahen’s bat doesn’t really play at DH, but clearly that’s not a factor.
If you are going to play Vizquel every day, probably easier to put Vizquel at third, so Beckham can go to the position he will probably play for the rest of his career, and Alexei doesn’t have to move again though.
by Grinder in Training on Jan 28, 2010 11:45 AM CST up reply actions
I don't know about Vizquel's durability, but it's a good question.
He hadn’t played much at 3B until last year, though in limited action he appeared to do pretty well statistically.
Vizquel's bat is so bad at this point, I don't see how his glove can make up for it
by hitlesswonder on Jan 28, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions
Agreed, but this is a team that is letting Mark Kotsay DH
So Vizquel’s bat at SS would probably look pretty good in comparison.
by Grinder in Training on Jan 28, 2010 1:19 PM CST up reply actions
No thank you.
Ramirez at second is not an experience I’d like to relive. Vizquel will be a late inning defensive replacement, as he should be.

an AL team not having a DH is like a giraffe fucking a mule. - larry
-15 for the DH committee may be misleading
An average based on respective baserunning while playing DH should yield a baserunning score much closer to average. Probably better than -8…of course I’d still rather have Jim against righties though, as OPS is a good bit more important.
by paul_ on Jan 28, 2010 11:51 AM CST via mobile reply actions
this confuses me
why would “baserunning while playing DH” matter. i’ve never heard it asserted that someone who is DHing is a better baserunner.
the appropriate criticism is that those numbers come from approximately 750 PAs by the committee and 450 for thome (adjust for whatever “baserunning opportunities” you want to ascribe).
Yes.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
by winningugly on Jan 28, 2010 12:01 PM CST up reply actions
Point is -15 for the committee is not accurate
and therefore is not the correct number to use to compare against Thome. I agree, position is irrelevant and could have phrased that better.
If they are all better base runners then their composite score can’t be as bad as Thome…adding them is incorrect.
by paul_ on Jan 28, 2010 1:06 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Compared to Thome they are better
Kotsay is close, at least according to that metric, but Vizquel and Jones are much better…albeit still below average.

and bases are worth a fraction of a run
So if I was generous and said they were 10 bases better than Thome, we’re talking at most, a few runs. Not even close to making up the batted difference.

perhaps a more interesting discussion might be on the time horizon for conventional wisdom to be laid to rest in baseball.
as the most easily dissected major american sport statistically, there’s a mountain of information at everyone’s fingertips. i’d like to think that at some point all that knowledge staring people in the face will be put to good use, but then again, people are stupid. and the general public is even more stupid than the many stupid individuals that comprise it.
obviously, quantifying people will always be an inexact science, but surely we can infer some things to make good risk/reward plays. why does that seem so difficult employ?

Agreed, the change is happening gradually
Some teams are better than others, but yeah, I honestly believe that you could take the most competent posters on any SBNation MLB team site to run a front office and put together a better team and minor league system than any team in the league. You’re going to have to convince an owner of this, of course. Some of these wealthy owners earned their money by coming up with a new idea or product, so I’m not sure why they are so foolish with their sports teams.
What needs to happen is that an owner needs to realize that just because Ozzie Guillen, Kenny Williams, or whomever learned to “play baseball the right way,” they have no idea what the right way to play baseball is. But since this applies to nearly everyone in the game, hence “conventional wisdom,” it’s a tough nut to crack. It shouldn’t be this tough, though.

we should all be in index funds and not investing in actively managed entities, since 15% of pros beat the market. People cling to what is comfortable until they can’t/won’t. The pain of not changing has to be greater than the pain of changing.

I give Kenny a lot of credit for winning a world series. And he's made some moves that turned out really well..
But he’s also made some really bad moves and put together at least one bad and some other mediocre teams, so I don’t think he should be insulated from criticism. Moreover, in this case, Williams and Reinsdorf appeared to actually think it would be best to bring Thome back and/or actually sign a DH who can hit, but deferred the decision to Ozzie, whose logic and plan are totally whacked.
There's one thing giving benefit of the doubt when they say "We just traded for Juan Pierre"

No team in the AL Central has committed more money over the next five seasons than the Chicago White Sox. With the acquisitions of right-hander Jake Peavy and outfielder Alex Rios in late 2009, the White Sox added nearly $112 million in payroll through 2014. But Chicago GM Ken Williams managed to keep payroll basically flat for 2010 by parting ways with four veterans who represented nearly 40 percent of the 2009 payroll: Jim Thome ($13 million), Jermaine Dye ($11.5 million), Jose Contreras ($10 million), and Octavio Dotel ($6 million). In their place, the Sox added outfielder Juan Pierre ($3 million), third baseman Mark Teahen ($3.75 million), and reliever J.J. Putz ($3 million). Williams even had room for shelling out $4 million to upgrade the bench, bringing back outfielder Mark Kotsay and backup catcher Ramon Castro while signing veteran free agents Omar Vizquel and Andruw Jones.
The White Sox have committed more than $66 million to nine players for 2011, with most of the money reserved for Peavy ($16 million), Rios ($12 million), and left-hander Mark Buehrle ($14 million). Chicago also faces the prospect of expensive arbitration cases for closer Bobby Jenks, left fielder Carlos Quentin, and left-hander John Danks. But payroll flexibility will improve for 2012, with only $45 million committed to five players.
Like every other club, the White Sox need premium production from their players earning eight-figure salaries. Peavy is due $15 million this season, $16 million for 2011, and $17 million for 2012, with the club holding a $22- million option for 2013. Rios will earn $9.7 million in 2010, $12 million in both 2011 and 2012, and $12.5 million in both 2013 and 2014. Their ability to rebound in 2010 and beyond will go a long way in determining whether the White Sox can win and whether Williams’ 2009 gambles were cost-effective.

Like we haven’t been since the big contracts of 2006?
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
depends.
sox had a payroll about 15% higher in 2008. is that an outlier or is that roughly the ceiling (i.e., the reason payroll isn’t there now or last season is because they expect they’ll be back there or above once those mentioned arb cases / long-term deals are concluded or they’re building in flexibility for the fantastic 2011 free agents). konerko and aj do free up some significant cash, though existing increases (rios, pierre, floyd so on) eat up some of that even before we get to the arb cases.
That was my thought
re: PK and AJ coming off the books being negated by Peavy (not a bad trade) and Rios/Pierre (shudder). I’m OK with Floyd’s, and a long-term Danks, contract. Position players look a little dicey with that fabulous 30th-ranked-by-Law farm filling in. (Though Mitchell trumps all concerns in 2011.)

Okay...
1) Twins are 82-80 and picked to finish in first place. I figure they hit at least 86 wins.
2) White Sox are 79-83 and picked to finish in second place. Probably generous IMO.
3) Where are the Indians and Tigers picked?
Figure this. Take away the gain the Twins get from snagging Thome (maybe 1 game) and give us a full time DH in Thome (and maybe 1-2 wins more as a result) and there the White Sox are around 81-81, the Twins at 80-82.

I would be pleased
with a lot of those projections. Especially Alexei.

I didn't post this because I wasn't quite sure if it was figured in yet.
Lots of 09 stuff like comments still listed. However assuming it is I would be highly encouraged by this. A projected 789 runs scored would bold well for this currently constructed squad. The pitching projections are ultra conservative so take them with a grain of salt.

Case in point not 1 starter is projected to throw 200 innings in these inital numbers

projecting any one starter
but it’s not unreasonable to expect the Sox to have 3 starters over 190 IP this year.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
if the fourth doesn't get to at least 180
that’s probably a bad sign.

Just glancing through, some of the projections (particularly on pitchers) seem ... odd.
Take a look at the Nats (and Strasberg in particular — 31 VORP in 15 starts?) and A’s (Sheets, Trevor Cahill and their middle relievers). Maybe they’re preliminary or (more likely) I’m missing something and/or dumb.
Teh Cub at 77-85 would be amusing, though.

Anything you post with "Teh" gets a rec from me,
since “Teh Twinn” is classic.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
Some of the individual player projections are not terrible.
I could live with some of those numbers.
Chatty chat chat. Shocking conclusion on the DH.
Brian (Tinley): Christina – First off, I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your work. I was wondering what your thoughts are on how the White Sox fared on their roster moves this winter and last summer with Rios and Peavy? Do you think they have put themselves into contention to get into the playoffs and advance? Thanks, Brian
Christina Kahrl: Brian, thank you as well, I appreciate the sentiment. I’m left with feeling as if the White Sox’ offseason is a thing not yet finished. I like the rotation quite a bit (Freddy Garcia may prove to be a bargain, while Peavy will be fine), and the pen’s looking good as well (don’t forget Jenks’ commitment to conditioning, even after it lost its q rating to Villanueva’s even bigger weight loss). I just don’t like the DH situation, because Kotsay and Jones won’t add enough value there, and they should have re-upped with Thome instead of keeping space open for a 12th pitcher they may not need given that rotation.

Christina...
Heartwarming to know I agree with her, as do most of the posters here. Too bad Kenny and Ozzie don’t see it our way.

thanks for the link. :)
This is rather recent and pretty funny:
David (bloomington, indiana): Do Jon Coutlangus and Doug Fister ever get to pitch on the same team together – it would be a shame for that treasure-trove of single-entendres to go untapped.
Christina Kahrl: Oh, I don’t know. There’s a quite a bit to be said of players who defy Bermanisms. Unless of course HBO moves into broadcasting baseball…

Broadway Brawl
A former relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets has been sued for allegedly assaulting a Woodlands man during a New Year’s Eve party in Dallas.
Randy Sorrels, attorney for 25-year-old Ivan Pinney, said his client’s left eye was severely damaged when he was punched and kicked by Lance Broadway, currently a minor-league pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, and Cameron McGuire, who plays for United League Baseball’s Edinburg Roadrunners.
Sorrels said that McGuire kicked Pinney in the face after he had dropped to his knees. Afterwards, according to Sorrels, a brawl broke out and Broadway punched several women, knocking one out.

I like Walker, at least more so than the SSS masses...
but him saying this is the deepest offense since he’s been here is insanity. 2003 and 2006 come to mind as particularly good offensive ball clubs. 2003 would have even been better if konerko didn’t blow.
Kenwo4life=ratings
deep does not necessarily mean good.
i’d rather have timo in the last bench spot and a real hitter in the starting lineup.
This is way off subject
but I once had a pretty candid conversation with Walker at the Mortons steakhouse in Minneapolis (which has since closed making a trip up there less desirable)….. This was in 2006…. where he told me that the White Sox had a deal done for Alfonso Soriano….. but the Nationals went and scouted Lance Broadway, and Broadway didn’t hit 90 one time that day so the deal fell through.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Broadway hit 90 at the bar. Should have scouted him there.
That would have dramatically changed the 2006 pennant race. He could have dragged the Sox past the Tigers and into the post-season.
Oh, well….
by 67WMAQ on Jan 29, 2010 8:32 AM CST up reply actions 1 recs
kind of amusing that the nationals appeared to negotiate a trade based upon year old draft scouting reports.
at least they left themselves the out of doing in-person scouting before finalizing.
Walker would sign a DH.
