Clevelan Santeliz, RHP, Chicago White Sox
Bats: R Throws: R HT: 6-0 WT: 190 DOB: September 1, 1986

After futzing around as a starter unsuccessfully in 2008, Santeliz moved back to the bullpen in '09 and was very impressive at times for Double-A Birmingham. He's got a terrific fastball at 95-98 MPH, with movement, and he continued to make strides with his slider and splitter, though both pitchers remain erratic. He posted good K/IP and H/IP marks, but his walk rate was still high and that will hurt him at higher levels. There was a lot of good luck involved with the 0.96 ERA: his FIP was 4.00, much better than the 5.98 mark he posted in '08, but showing that the ERA overstates how much he improved. I remain intrigued with his arm strength, but the control still worries me. Don't overrate him based on the pretty ERA. Grade C.

But ERA and wins are the only things that matter.

Everybody knows that. That’s what’s on the scoreboard.

You beat me to that.

If he is not impressed with Hudson I bet Santeliz gets no mention.

I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.

by winningugly on Jan 29, 2010 3:14 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

uhm, yeah, I'd pretty much say so, since Sickels has Hudson as a top 25 pitcher

in the Minors and he is giving Santeliz a grace of “C”.

I think on average that 23 might be...

slightly old (21-22 is about right for AA, no?), but I consider it more normal in this instance since he switched from being a starter to be a reliever. It’s a good question, and I’d be interested in larry’s response, especially as it applies to Mr. Santeliz.

by palehose67 on Jan 29, 2010 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

to follow on, since not clear from your post,

but, for clarity’s sake, santeliz was 22 last season so he was fine for level.

Great link.

jorge luis would be so disappointed

I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.

If this column had been written fifteen years ago it would have been about how email is strange and web addresses look funny

Why are sports columnists still being given money? They are as ossified as they are unfunny. (And vis a vis the recent thread where David Haugh was brought up, there’s a massive decline in the quality of writing when he’s not talking about the Bears.)

Sickels' book out next week!

For some reason or not, the filter here at work isn’t working today and I can get to this site. Somewhere I think this is God’s way of easing my pain for the loss of one Gentlemen Masher who was abducted by our ice fishing neighbors to the north.

Typical..

Apparently even computer filters are lazy on Friday’s.

Santeliz

assuming his control improves, do you see him as a possible call up to the pen in 2010 (due to roster injury or sept. call up)? Gotta like that fastball.

10. Clevelan Santeliz: 2009 MiLB line: 56.1 IP, 43 H, 35 BB, 52 K at Birmingham. Santeliz improved his control markedly as the season wore on. In the first half, he walked 27 in 35 innings. In the second half, just 8 in 21.1. If that improvement is real, the 23 year old righty could find himself and his mid-90s fastball and plus slider in the bullpen role sooner rather than later. ETA: Mid-2010. Will be in Charlotte and probably will be the first choice for a reliever call-up.

he obviously is getting his ladies lined up for the weekend (allah Tiger pre-thanksgiving) and doesn’t have the patience or time to go round and round with the likes of me.

I jumped into a car in vegas and ended up at the Mtv beach house in San Diego just in time for Sisqo’s shakedown. Now that was a vacation!

just read Dye turned down the 3.3 million offer from the cubs

that Nady eventually got. On one hand I think this was a bad decision because I don’t think he’s gunna get more than that. On the other hand I am happy he did….because seeing JD in Cubbie blue…..well that would have made me cry.

Probably a money thing.

If he’s in the 6-7 million range? No mas.

Other nuggets from the article – they looked at Delgado in PR. Pass. Not interested in Blalock or Branyan.

The door’s not closed. Looks like the organization will see how it pans out in spring training first.

Well assuming Levine's reporting is accurate......

It’s discouraging that the LH DH is being tabled, yet encouraging that they are at least “keeping an eye” on Damon.

What are the realistic possibilities right now for Damon?

the last trilogy was sweet. reece is just entering her prime so i’d expect this next trilogy to be worth at least 4.5 LOSR.
