Rasmus for Quentin?

Cards/White Sox talking Rasmus/Quentin deal?
Colby Rasmus - OF - STL - Oct. 30 - 9:23 a.m. ET

According to the Chicago Sun-Times' Joe Cowley, White Sox GM Kenny Williams will target disgruntled outfielder Colby Rasmus this winter and might offer the Cardinals a package centered around Carlos Quentin.
Cowley's source says Cardinals scouts were "paying extra attention" to Quentin at the end of the season and also noted that Rasmus' name had been brought up by the White Sox brass during the final weeks of the season. Rasmus' relationship with manager Tony La Russa is frosty, at best. However, unless the White Sox are offering additional significant parts in a deal, this deal would be a big win for the White Sox. Cards GM John Mozeliak has previously been quoted as saying "I can assure you, Colby's not going to be traded."

I would offer Quentin and their choice of Flowers or Viciedo.

Throw in one of our dud pitchers in the AFL if necessary.

I love horseshit trade speculation in the offseason.

I guess one man's pain in the ass is another’s perfect fit.

I mean this is a horseshit trade.

St. Looie would be nuts to do this.

Maybe Mark Kotsay's unborn son

KW can raise him like a little Kaspar Hauser at one of their Venezuelan baseball facilities.

Funny...

When Rasmus said he wanted to be traded I actually mentioned to friends that the Sox need to create a package around Quentin to get him. The Cardinals said they want more 25+ HR guys on their team.

Quentin, Morel (Cards have a huge need at 3b), and possibly a live arm or the equivalent for Rasmus might be a decent starting point.

Any idea how much $ the Sox have open in the payroll for free agents? I think it is roughly $20 – $25mm. If PK walks, I think Dunn is a priority. That would leave about 10mm for a 1b/DH (unless Viciedo fills that hole) and RP.

by Franchise82 on Nov 4, 2010 9:36 AM CDT reply actions

3B

Whoops, I forgot about 3b if Morel gets traded. Guess it would have to be Teahan. The more scenarios I map out in my head the more I realize the Sox are in one tough spot unless their payroll is expanded to about 110mm.

they have david freese at third

with allen craig in the minors and the 3b they just drafted out of arkansas. they do not have a huge need at third.

i'd be kinda pissed if they traded morel in a deal like that anyways.

seems like he might be of more relative worth to the white sox going forward than Q will be.

at least rasmus is a good young player

this wouldn’t be like trading away prospects for a carl everett. rasmus can have a future built around him. i’d still like to keep brent, but if he had to be in the package and the rest of the package wasn’t too much, i want colby.

David Freese is a butcher at 3rd

Also, he has DUI demons.

Not that sort of thing is a big deal in St. Louis-

I would too, but I doubt that would happen if this scenario ever played out

I think Fukudome makes 13 million this year

Linebrink makes 4.5 million this year, and Teahen makes 10 or so million over the next two years.

So the money’s pretty even.

by PeejSox on Nov 8, 2010 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

1.5-2 wins for 13.5M vs. 1-1.5 for 15

unless the Cubs feel like they’re gaining some positive PR getting rid of him, i don’t see why you’d want fewer wins and an extra year’s commitment. still, it’s within the realm of feasible.

more feasible would be Teahen for Fukudome straight up.

I enjoy pronouncing Fukudome as fuck-you-do-me to want him on the team anyways

I don't think Teahen's garbage if he's in the NL

His ability to play multiple infield positions poorly (remember when he was the Royals opening week 2nd basemen? weird- that was 2009.) and the outfield competently combined with his average bat makes him a valuable asset in that ridiculous league.

Also I do think that the positive PR comes from the whole “Tyler Colvin’s the shit” bandwagon that got revved up last year.

As an aside- that Fukodome memorabilia that they sell outside of Wrigley is ridiculous.

The Cubs fan-base has to be one of the most racist in the game. It’s just bizarrely unquantifiable because wealthy white folk are pretty much allergic to being racist.
