KenWo's Corner - Dayan Viciedo
Last week we took a look at Chris Sale and what his role in 2011 should be. This week, the spotlight is on Dayan Viciedo. He is one of our top offensive prospects and can be used in several different ways in the upcoming season. Let's face it, the emergence of Brent Morel along with the signing of Adam Dunn and the re-signing of Paul Konerko has made this offseason hard out there for The Pimp.

Viciedo went from being the third baseman of the future to falling behind Brent Morel on the depth chart. He did play there a bit in 2010 and, while he does have a nice arm, proved he doesn't have the quickness and instinct to play third base on a permanent basis, at least not yet. He was switched over to first base upon his return to the minors and was looked about as the probable first baseman when and if Paul Konerko bolted. Konerko stayed and Dunn was brought in, which not only left the Pimp without a corner but also meant no DH'ing.
At the plate, however, Viciedo proved two things. First, he can absolutely sting the baseball. When Viciedo makes contact, it almost seems different coming off the bat than when anyone else does. He has pure power that doesn't come around every day. Secondly, he doesn't see a pitch he doesn't like. Viciedo will swing hard at most anything. A lot of people view it as a weakness, but I am old school and like the approach. I am not a fan of taking away a players aggressiveness.
So what should the Sox do with him? There are plenty of options. Should he take on the job of bench player? Should he be returned to the minor leagues as a third baseman? Should he be traded for relief help? All of these are plausible options. The Sox could use a power hitter off the bench, they could use 2011 as an opportunity to improve his defense at one of the corners or they could dangle him out there for a reliever.
If I was in charge, I would let him compete with Morel for the third base job this year. Assuming he is beaten out, I would immediately let him bat 4th and play left field for Charlotte. If he can be somewhat capable in left field, with his stick, he could start 2012 in the middle of the Sox order. This is his quickest ticket to the big leagues with the White Sox. You don't have to be a defensive wizard to play left. Carlos Quentin wasn't viewed as drastically terrible when he played left as he is now in right. Carlos Lee made the switch from 3rd base to LF back in '99 and has been there ever since. No, he won't win any gold gloves, but I think you have to get that bat into the middle of the order as quickly as possible. He has the potential to be a special hitter.

Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
It's so nice to be able to discuss our outfield next year and not have to worry about center.
I think Morel showed enough last year that there really shouldn’t/won’t be a competition this year. I think the platoon of Vizquel and Morel should be set, but at the same time of course at the very least give Viciedo the chance to fight for it. I really like the idea of seeing how he would do to a corner OF assignment in the minors, cause yeah, the guy can smack, and if he can get his reads decent, he certainly can’t be worse than what we’ve had out there.

I went with Minor League 1st/3rd base
But I was darn close to picking ML Outfield. I just feel like I’d like to see him try third base for one more season in the minors to see if he can improve at all. He’s got a nice arm. Maybe working with Cora some more will help him out. But I feel like if Viciedo can show improvement it allows the team to put a more potent bat at third. Because what happens if Q can return to something like his 08 form and stays healthy? Dunn has the DH spot filled for the next few years and while I’m not going to automatically conform to the “we need speed at the top of the lineup” cliche’, I feel like it’d be easier to find a leadoff guy who can play left field as opposed to finding a leadoff guy who can play third base and make Morel completely expendable.

you are the minor league guru and have followed him a lot more closely than I
so i will take your word for it… but from the small sample size i saw- I can’t remember him uncorking terrible throws. Usually if he made a mistake it was not handling the ground ball.
Kenwo4life=ratings
May be teachable?
Certainly the arm strength/velocity is there. Perhaps taking a moment to set up or to get the feet properly positioned. Of course it may be he’s just too slow afoot for the IF.

When I said "nice arm" I meant strength/velocity
and NSP pointed this out also. But I’ll also second what KenWo said in that I don’t remember him making a bunch of terrible throws over to first. I haven’t gone and looked at the numbers though. If he’s terrible at third then I’m all for converting him to a corner outfield spot.
That being said… who would you put in the leadoff spot if this scenario were to play out?

I like the idea of Tank in LF . . .
so I voted for him to play in MiLB as a corner outfielder with the potential of him coming up to help sometime during the season.
I think the worst thing tha the Sox could do with him is use him as trade bait for a veteran but average bullpen arm. I think that would be a poor return for a player that has tremendous potential (remember how young he is) and plays with infectious enthusiasm.
i agree with the trading thing....
If it was in a package to get someone like Fielder or a big named starter or something…. then fine. For a reliever though? Just makes me think long and hard about Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson.
Kenwo4life=ratings
i think you're overestimating the value of viciedo as a trading chip (for either fielder or a ~ #3 starter)
that said, i don’t find trading him for a middle reliever preferable…
i had voted for keeping him as a bench player, but i change my mind. starting him in MiLB in the outfield is something to be considered

Trading Dayan
for a reliever would quickly make me sick to my stomach. Some of the younger teams should have KW on speed dial trying to flip relievers for a chance to give him a go at 1b. I think he puts up big numbers at AAA if he’s there.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
I too would like to see him give the outfield a try.
If he’s a disaster there, we can trade him or try to make a 3b out of him. One full year in AAA to hone OF skills and plate discipline, then he takes over for Pierre. With our pitching staff, we need to field the ball and when you don’t field well at 3b it’s usually 2 bases you’re giving up rather than one. We’ll have enough hitting in the lineup to carry the best defender at 3b this season.

I don't know if mitchell will be ready by next season.
but an outfield of Viciedo in LF, Mitchell in CF and Rios in RF very well might be the future. It kind of falls into place.
As for next season- lets see how Beckham does this year. He’s not your prototypical ozzie leadoff hitter but I think he could do the job.

So who would relieve Rios if he needed a day off? I think a cheap in house option right now is De Aza. He doesn’t have pop but he’s fast and you can plug him into any of the outfield spots.

As good as they could get?
I don’t think I agree with that. Seems to me he was too focused on position instead of getting the best package.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
without knowing what other offers were out there, who knows.
the only other offer we’re aware of is the nationals offer, which greinke nixed by saying he wouldn’t waive his NTC to go there.
and, if you’re going to focus on position, there are worse positions to focus on than SS and CF.
Karl's take (and mine) why the rush?
If this deal seems a little light to you in terms of return, you’re not alone. Maybe Greinke’s limited no-trade protection put the Royals in an especially difficult situation, but if this is really all that two years of an ace brings you in December, that would suggest they’d have been better off holding onto him, and folding up any trade negotiations until later. Not that everybody is going to get what the Rangers got from the Braves at the deadline for Mark Teixeira in 2007, but a year and a half of control while trying to make a run at a pennant has a way of pressuring bidders into action. If this was the best deal they could get for Greinke now, the absence of any one definite difference-maker for the fortunes of the franchise strikes me as a squandered opportunity to convert Greinke into a more certain component of any future success they might aspire to.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?

I can see why you'd question it
based upon KC’s trading history but I’d err on the side of maximizing value. Since the Yankees supposedly were considering him (and few others) they may have felt they had to use what leverage they had – which, again, was not a lot. Would you want to bet the Greinke farm that 2011 would be a much better year for him, or do you think that a disgruntled employee who has a history of anxiety issues might devalue his own currency?

yeah that's part of it
the other part is he was totally underwhelming with the bat in ’10. here are his MLEs per Dan Szymborski from ’08 and ’09:
.268/.298/.354
.265/.315/.357
and his actual ’10:
.235/.288/.326
if you buy the scouting reports, his fld+pos adj+ replev is probably 35 runs/150 G or so, which means he’s got to his wOBA to ~ .300 to be average.
