White Sox Pick Up Option on Alexei Ramirez
Kenny Williams is getting his ducks in a row before the Winter Meetings -- jettisoning Jenks, picking up Pierzynski, getting Dunn's deal -- and now picking up the no-brainer $2.75M option on Alexei Ramirez. It's a good bet that the KW and Ramirez come to terms on a long-term deal before camp is over.

I would think
that they’d want to wait until a little bit into the season to talk to him about an extension. Save a few more bucks for free-agent signings/trades.
hes already being paid 2.75 million this year
the extension would kick in next year

they don't like to talk in-season extensions

if anyone has espn insider
what does keith law say beyond this:
In the short term, signing Adam Dunn for four years and $56 million looks really, really good for Chicago. The White Sox add a player who, with a career-low 67 unintentional walks last season, would still have led the team in that category. They add an extreme fly ball hitter to a ballpark noted for turning fly balls into home runs. And they keep Dunn away from the outfield, preferably away from the field entirely. Chicago got an unacceptable line of .247 AVG/.332 OBP/.396 SLG from its DH spot in 2010, a line boosted by about 150 at-bats from Paul Konerko and Manny Ramirez, both now free agents. Dunn hasn’t posted an OBP under .350 or slugged under .490 in the past seven seasons, and if he doesn’t pick up a glove but rolls out there for 600 plate appearances, he’s probably a four-win upgrade for Chicago.

in a nutshell
it makes them better now, will cost alot, and he thinks they might have overpaid, because he didn’t see “any other teams holding an empty bag” after he’d been signed. he doesn’t see any here, and thinks the sox might have overpaid / bid against themselves / there wasn’t much of a market for Dunn.

Agreed - and he did spend a year on the south side.

He will get the moment of silence on Opening Day.
Personally – I got to meet him a couple of times in connection with my line of work. Indulged my questions about playing for Chuck Tanner, DH’ing, etc. A very nice guy.
A lot has been said about the groans, the cheers, and the OH NOOOO! But the world of baseball broadcasting is full of dull white people. Santo wasn’t one of ’em.

Bill James on Santo and the HOF:
Players who were nowhere near as good as Ron Santo were elected to the Hall of Fame in the 1960s, players who were nowhere near as good as Ron Santo were elected to the Hall of Fame in the 1970s (lots of them), players who were nowhere near as good as Ron Santo were elected into the Hall of Fame in the 1980s, and players who were nowhere near as good as Ron Santo were elected to the Hall of Fame in the 1990s…. Look, certain things just do not happen. Rivers do not run uphill, iron does not become gold, time does not go backward, whores do not become virgins, pigs do not give birth to lions, supermodels do not marry auto mechanics, and politicians do not forget about the next election. There is no alchemy by which the Hall of Fame may become what it never has been. Ron Santo towers far above the real standard for the Hall of Fame."

He deserved the HOF. IF they elected him now, I hope his wife tells them to shove it.

What kind of stuff do you normally filter?
at my work (I’m in IT), we filter the standard porn, gambling, drug sites, but all news/social-media/time-wasting/shopping are allowed. Its basically a “protect the company from legal problems” policy. Its not like people who waste time on the net at the expense of their productivity escape it for long. And we do log all internet usage if we do need it.
Besides, my company is usually way more concerned with users using Dropbox to remove proprietary content than internet usage. Which is stupid because there are a jillion ways to get files out anyway.
I shant be misled a second time

I don't see the uproar.
I personally have only heard him broadcast maybe 5 minutes. So I can only go on other’s opinions of his broadcasting skills. However…
Being such an awful broadcaster in many’s opinions I think is what made him who he is. He was Ron Santo… great baseball player, and (probably) a terrible broadcaster. We should embrace both of those aspects when remembering the type of person he was. But we should also embrace the fact that he was a die-hard Cubs fan, despite witnessing over half a century of inept baseball, even unto his death, and for that he deserves the utmost respect and pity.

I think the point was pretty clear I implied
Manny’s signing had very little to do with the amount of money that the Sox would spend this year budget wise. Now you’re just being difficult. Others seem to understand that.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
It is possible that Jerry had set aside (budgeted) a certain amount to be used in 2010 for such expenditures
And it’s possible he wrote that money off, and that money was going to be spent on something. That is possible. I don’t deny that.
But there was always an option to hold that money, not spend it, and apply it towards the 2011 budget.
If one has a limited amount of money (as JR must) then pissing on some of it doesn’t make much sense, when that money can be saved and later spent on something more useful.
