In Memoriam: Scott Linebrink
November 23, 2007 - December 3, 2010
We are gathered here today to remember Scott Cameron Linebrink. Scott came to us as a free agent. Today, he leaves us.
My favorite Scott Linebrink memory was Scott being traded to the Atlanta Braves.
Please add your memory - or at least your name - to the guestbook below.

wonder how much cash they sent with him.
My favorite Scott Linebrink moment will be in the future when he blows the 5 run lead in game 7 of the World Series as Dunn touches ’em all FTW.
This week keeps getting better. Sign Paulie and I'm going on a weekend bender to celebrate a so-far successful offseason. I'm sure egus of all schmucks will be happy to toast this with me!

My favorite Linebrink memory was when my baseball team played a doubleheader at a local university, and I looked to the outfield fence to see Linebrink’s jersey had been retired. I shat bricks much in the way we saw Linebrink do himself on multiple occasions in his time with the White Sox.
My favorite Linebrink memory was
calling him Linestink every oppurtunity I got, and teaching friends and acquaintances to use that nickname. Good riddance, brick-shitter.
Hope he’s not writing the 2011 White Sox Anal too. -Sox Machine
April. Minnesota is at USCF
Linebrink comes in with the bases loaded and retires the next three guys.
The Sox lost 1-0, but I was just as surprised as you.

SO difficult to choose just one example of his mound-crapping! The 8th inning of June 18, 2009 against the Cubs (Thorny got pegged with the L) stands out for me. I wanted to murder the em-effer.
Also amusing, is how we still felt shitty after wins in which Linebrink pitched.
Example: August 17, 2009. Sox are able to score a run in the bottom of the 8th and wind up winning the game 8-7, despite Liney’s best attempt to fuck it all up by giving up 3 runs in the top of the inning.
Bobby closes and Linebrink gets the win (/facepalm), and this historical thread emerges from the ashes.

to be fair, it will probably deflect the news that you have to play half the year in atlanta now.
I love seasons too. That's why I live in a place that skips the shitty ones.

You can't fault his work ethic.
I’m in the same boat with you, TF. He was a good guy and worked hard to be as effective as he could be. Unfortunately, he was unable to find that effectiveness for most of the time he was here. I still think that he is going to have a decent 2011 season.

I have two favorite Linebrink moments, generally speaking
The first was the first half of ‘08 where he was outstanding. Then Joe Morgan said the Sox had the best bullpen he’s ever seen and that was that.
The second was my automatic rule of thumb from any game in ’09 or ’10: Anytime Linebrink comes in, the game is no longer worth watching.

What a rebellious idea this is.

it makes for a fun team this year.
and i’ll enjoy that. but we’ll be missing wins from future teams, especially if we go this route AND start trading our few prospects.
Fireworks: Bang?
what else do we need
if we get paulie?
couple of decent arms for the bullpen, which can be got on the free market. though might it be worth it to trade a starter for some bullpen help plus some good prospects? replenish the incredibly bare system.
seems like any 4 out of the 5 starters we have ought to be enough to win the division.
at this point, they're all in for 2011
the idea hopefully will be to grow the perceived value of the current investments, so they can dump salary when necessary and get some younger players rather than just dumping salary (or, as in Linebrink’s case, having to send money).
Fireworks: Bang?

I don't see why you think they're compromising the future
as much as you’re emphasizing. That they’re doing this, to me, indicates that they aren’t risking everything and that they feel they have enough breathing space going down the road that they won’t be detrimenting future teams too much by deferring.

he can't. but his kids inherit it.
are they also in line to inherit the team? because if so, it then becomes money the white sox won’t have in the future.
and if he's selling to someone else
i’m sure outstanding contracts would count against the final sale price.
Fireworks: Bang?
not to mention that JR is not the only owner. there are literally dozens of people with an interest in the team, now that other owners died off and left their share to kids etc.
is it easier for JR to get what he wants since
there’s a more diverse group with less invested per person?
Fireworks: Bang?
sometimes it's less easy to get what you want when there are more people involved. probably depends upon the structure. i would assume as the head of the ownership group, he has a great deal of say in the direction, as he always has.
Like a board of directors easily led by the successful Chairman,
JR has a lot of cache with his partners. Longevity, profitability, and a championship go a long way to those who own just a sliver.

i'll wait till the aftermath to see how many wins it could cost
which is why i’m just agitating against the concept. to me it looks like JR balancing his love of the Sox with his desire not to lose money. so he’s kicking the can.
Fireworks: Bang?
I just don't see it all adding up to a huge black hole.
The big contracts are staggered. 2011 was supposed to be the complicated year.
Then again, I didn’t see them bringing in Dunn and then bringing back AJ and Paulie.
by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 3, 2010 4:40 PM CST up reply actions
i already laid out for you what a 3-win deficit means for your chances.
we’re not talking about a huge black hole.
Fireworks: Bang?
They seem to be willing to pay quite a price
to cover those last few wins. In which case, I still don’t see the contract staggering causing the team to have to lower payroll at any point in the near future and I don’t see the larger of the contracts hamstringing the team, either.
I’m anxious to see how it turns out, but in any case there are a number of options. If a three-win deficit means 2010, then it doesn’t necessarily mean it was a mistake to do this. Having to break up the contracts like this isn’t ideal but I don’t see where it means you’re losing something you can’t replace later and if they do it right they can still break even with less-than ideal results. Backloading is also done so that if a player plays like he should(or you hope), you can deal him while letting someone else pay for what would be sunk costs.

I just don't know if the cons are that forbidding
It seems like they’ll be able to operate as they always have if they draw the contracts up properly. That’s what makes it viable to me.
by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 3, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions
Its not
If I had a dollar every time I heard this I’d be rich. This current situation wasn’t even supposed to be possible a few years ago. Wake me when their done.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
this is true.
the caveat is there’s plenty of variability in a given season. ’07 was a blip, largely because Gavin, Johnny and Carlos turned out to be stellar. the equivalents on this team would be Morel, Beckham and Viciedo. to lesser extent, Alexei and Carlos, since they already have MLB track records.
Fireworks: Bang?
Whatever the case, it's viable,
and I think at least as much so as taking lumps in the short-term. You’re entitled to disagree.

Against running your team like a regular
Pardon me if I disagree a tad.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
it's already somewhat different
JR isn’t profit maximizing, he wants to break even. unless he wants to bite the bullet and take an actual loss, it’s not hard to see this keeping the Sox from some number of wins in the future.
Fireworks: Bang?
This.

Leadshrink was a colossal disappointment, but
at least for the first 10-12 weeks of 2008 he was pretty darn good as a set up man for Jenks and was one reason why they got out of the gate strong that year. As for the rest of it, that Linebrink never returned. May they find him in Atlanta.
In all seriousness, Liney wasn't completely terrible down the stretch of '10 as I recall. The rest of the wheels were falling off, so maybe it seemed less significant. But I will not be surprised if he returns to some semblance of early '08 in ATL.

Adam Dunn presser
Anyone know if there is a video of it online.
Oh, and something to dream about tonight. When Dunn was walking on USCF earlier today, he asked the media if anyone has it the Miller Light sign in right field yet.
Speaking of memorials: Sheehan on Santo:
A long time ago, I wrote a piece for ESPN.com advocating Ron Santo for a spot in the Hall of Fame. Depending on what day you ask me, I’ll tell you that Santo or Bert Blyleven is the best player in baseball history eligible but not enshrined. At the time I wrote it, that was the extent of my knowledge of Santo — as a player, a performance record, really.
The thing is, I still get two to four e-mails a year from people who come across the piece, and the reactions always get to me. People in Chicago absolutely love this man, not even for who he was on the field, but for who he has been off of it. I didn’t know this when I wrote the piece, but once every couple of months, right as rain, I’ll get a missive from some Santo fan up in arms about the Hall’s failure to welcome their hero, and thanking me for making the case for him. The e-mails never mention OPS+ or the 1960s or defense. They always make reference to Santo’s deep and abiding love of the game and of the Cubs, his ongoing fight with diabetes, and his character. They identified with Santo not as a great baseball player, but as an extension and expression, in the radio booth, of their own passions.
I don’t know the man. I know Ron Santo entirely through his work and these e-mails. Based on that, however, I think he was too good for the Hall of Fame. It’s their loss.
To those e-mailers, and the millions of Cubs fans just like them who miss their voice today, you have my sympathies.

I hate to admit this -
but my baseball glove in Little League as a SS was the Wilson A2000 – because Santo used it. What can I say – he was stout in the mid-’60’s, Italian, and the whole family loved the Cubs (except me).
I also met him at a few Lion’s Club father-son dinners. Very engaging, always had time for us pain in the ass kids. I liked him. It would almost be like Looie Aparicio passing on for me, so I can empathise with the Cub fans’ pain.

let's talk payroll
if AJ is at 2 / Dunn is at 12 / Linebrink is 2.5
According to my estimates + the amazingly handy payroll info available here, that puts the current payroll at 91.55. What are the estimates for Danks/Pena/Quentin? How much would Konerko be?
Paulie is at least 3 years, $14MM/year.
I guess one man's pain in the ass is another’s perfect fit.
by mick10 on Sep 1, 2010 2:39 PM EDT
Ick -- I hope not
I think folks here are getting sentimental and overrating PK quite a bit. Konerko is 35 on opening day 2011. I think I’d rather take the Konerko money and invest it in Lee/LaRoche/Pena/Cust/Manny + legit 4th OFer + bullpen/6th starter.
Well I dont know if he wants 14 million
but those guys didnt defer money for you to bring in Jack Cust and company
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
is PK the best hitter on the market?
and those guys signed their deals looking for a good faith effort. i’m sure they’ve been apprised of the situation.
Fireworks: Bang?
Says the guy who didn't defer cash.
I know what you saying but……
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?
i'm not saying that KW can afford to pocket any of that money
i’m sure his reputation as a GM who will go for it gives you a chance to sign these guys in the first place.
Fireworks: Bang?
Perception versus reality, I get that...
in the end, I just don’t think Konerko is going to be worth what the Sox pay him. I know KW isn’t one for patience, but the Sox might be better suited to wait a bit on Konerko. The reason I say this is because I’m not sure there are any attractive teams that are going to offer much more than 2/$20. Sure, Baltimore might get crazy and offer 3/$30, but does Konerko really want to spend his last big contract sitting in the AL East’s cellar? Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, but who are the teams who are risks to offer Konerko big money?
i thought i read Boston on mlbtr
but i’m guessing they won’t get into a bidding war over an aging 1b.
Fireworks: Bang?
I'm not seeing it
rather, I think a lot of shit would have to happen in the next few weeks for that to occur, like, they miss out on Beltre and value Konerko over the other comparable 1B options and they don’t see another fit for that $10 million. The sum of those does not strike me as particularly likely, but YMMV.
you would have to think they'd be in play
for fielder or gonzalez either this year or next, so it wouldn’t make much sense for them to offer paulie the sort of long-term contract he’d be looking for.
If they wanted, they could move Paul to DH
ad let Ortiz leave. I’m not sure why they would plan that, but I’m not sure why they would need Konerko, either.
by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 3, 2010 5:13 PM CST up reply actions
good catch.
the Sox could be in on either, too. it wouldn’t be surprising to see Viciedo and whoever traded for either of them.
if the Sox have committed to backloading, the way you get out of that is to have your cheaper young guys break out, so i’ll say i prefer signing a big name FA.
Fireworks: Bang?
alternatives...
Berkman’s still out there. i think he makes as much sense as Paulie, perhaps more since he’s coming off a down year.
really though, there are a ton of cheaper alternatives that would be pretty decent alternatives but don’t mean somewhat less symbolically:
Maggs, Hawpe, Manny, Pena, Vlad, Damon, etc.
Fireworks: Bang?
berkman would be my plan B if paulie signs elsewhere.

It would be interesting to know how the Sox view Dunn versus PK defensively at first
do they see Dunn at 1B as historically bad, as in the only time he should be out there is for the occasional day off and interleague game? Or is it something less, like he’s worse than Konerko, but no more than a win difference (if that)? If it’s the latter, the Sox obviously give themselves a ton more leeway.
i'm guessing they don't regard Dunn's D as much of an obstacle
they’ve put Quentin and Dye out there and then went after Teahen.

But I do think at even 80% of his numbers for the next 2 year window it puts the Sox in a fantastic position to compete.

Keith, I respect you,
but you are a fucking lunatic if you think Paulie is taking <$14MM when Dunn, who has brought ZERO rings to town and is deferring $, is getting $14MM. Dunn being 31 mitigates his 4 years vs. my thoughts of PK getting 3 at 35 y/o.

seems like repetition
at a position + training can make a difference to a player in the infield – see alexei’s continued improvement.
is it any different for the outfield? or are we just buggered because joey cora only ever played the infield?
Che had to adjust to a new culture, climate, and peer group re: performance.

i was just thinking that it seems that every winter
you read about someone taking groundballs with joey cora, but you don’t read about anyone smashing flyballs at Q – or Dye before him for that matter.
It seems like the Sox outfielders are usually capable defensively
or slow. Dye was probably a decent outfielder at one point-he won a gold glove, fwliw- but you can’t teach speed. Alexei always had the physical gifts to play shortstop very well.

be something you could learn through experience as opposed to innate talent? seems like it would.

Yeah, I'd think he should get a shitload of fly balls hit to him.
But I also think some guys are better at recognizing curvature/arcs better. Rogers Hornsby said you can train fielders, but hitters are born to hit.

Whatever is limiting Q—injuries, marriage, whatever—it’s slowing him down. Pods was poor enough with his reads that his great speed made him tolerable. Alexei has the tools to be a good defensive player now, and it appears Quentin does not.

Having a shitty day at work today where I actually had to work and couldn’t lounge around on SSS all day, only to come home, crack a beer, and have this be the top thread. Oh glory of glories.

I have a pal with the OCD
it’s a nightmare getting him out for a drink – left the gas on, the taps are still running, the cat is out, forgot to wipe the toilet seat; and on and on. We just arrange to meet him two hours before the time – and he will be still late – worrying about the electric meter or some other nonsense.
So now you see.

In the world of manager Ozzie Guillen, Dunn will see action in the field at both first and left field, while also anchoring the designated hitter slot.

AJ's contract proves the sox read him right on arb.
I was leaning toward offering arb thinking he would get better offers elsewhere. Turns out the sox saved a few million dollars by playing it this way. It’s also evident and good to know AJ wants to be in Chicago.

Saw Adam Dunn this summer at Nationals Park against the Reds (Bachelor Party)
From what I heard from both fanbases is that he can be described in these AL Central terms:
He swings at pitches out of the zone, like an older Carlos Gomez and is Brandon Inge-esque in the field.

Execs Think Konerko Will Stay With White Sox
By Mark Polishuk [December 3 at 11:14pm CST]
“Competing execs” think Paul Konerko will ultimately re-sign with the White Sox for around $13MM per season, tweets Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. Konerko’s close relationship with owner Jerry Reinsdorf is cited as a main factor.
The Cubs, Orioles and Rangers have all been mentioned as suitors for Konerko this winter, and the Orioles have made Konerko an offer. Still, moving elsewhere could be a tough call for Konerko given his ties to the White Sox and the fact that the team seems to be doing all it can to find payroll space for him. Adam Dunn and A.J. Pierzynski deferred money from their contracts just so the Sox could have more cash available in 2011 to re-sign Konerko. “They literally put their money where their mouth is so we can put a better offer on the table for Paulie,” GM Kenny Williams told MLB.com’s Scott Merkin.

I was at the Sox vs. A’s game in Sept. this year when BHB left in the first inning and Pena pulled a rabbit out of his hat to provide what amounted to a quality start.
Linebrink shit the bed that game, obviously, and seeing him walk back into the clubhouse was quite sad. His face was completely red, like egus when he’s lit, and his head hung low.
I yelled something like “Good effort out there Scott, you’ll get ’em tomorrow”, knowing full well that it was a complete lie. If he pitched the next day, he would still suck.
Anyways, thought I’d share.
