Bobby Jenks Says "Thanks For The Memories"
"Chicago will be in my heart for the rest of my career and probably the rest of my life," Jenks said. "I will never forget the first six years of my career in Chicago.
"In my heart, I was born an Angel, but my first chance I got was from the White Sox. If I'm not there this year and the following years, it will be sad, but there always will be a place in my heart and my family's heart where I know and we know they were always the first. If things don't work out, it's just unfortunate they won't be the last."
"But if this is goodbye, I wish I had something more romantic, but slow down, drive safe and see you on the other side of the fence."

if by "other side of the fence"
you mean the future home runs the sox hit off you in the 9th to regain the lead, then see you there

Nothing would surprise me this year.
Bobby may settle for a $5M deal, and be perfect as the “closer” leaving Thornton/Sale/Serge for higher leverage situations (even the 9th at times).
No bet, but wouldn’t surprise.

Good luck bobby
Maybe if you would have stuck with a fastball/curveball combo… you would have been worth the arb money. Maybe you didn’t blow a ton of saves this past year, but you blew enough leads, and it ended up costing us the division. Maybe I went from your supporter to wishing you farewell, and this transformation happened in a matter of weeks.

ah well.
Heard this: Good progress being made by D-backs to bring J.J. Putz in as potential closer.

i suppose if they are paying him closer money he’d be too expensive to bring back anyways.
well that sucks
Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''
How long before there's no such thing as "closer money"? Or that the Thornton's of the world are your highest paid relievers?
Before teams wake up to “protecting a 3 run lead in the 9th” isn’t worth millions?
Why in the world do the D-Backs or Royals need a closer?

there should probably
just be “mariano money” and then pay every other reliever dependent ’pon their actual performance as opposed to abstract notions.
i suppose you could argue that is always useful for the likes of the d-backs and royals to have a closer to use as mid-season trade bait.
Good point re bait.

It sounds like a lot, yeah... but their bullpen was atrocious.
If you swap their bullpen with, say, the Yankees, I think their record improves by double digits. The stats will probably be a lot more conservative, but the eye test says differently.

What is Quentin's trade value?
If Reynolds is worth 2 relievers, Q in the AL with a much better breakout season seems like he could garner more interest than that.

kenny already said he isn't going anywhere.
of course it is kenny, so you can take that with a pinch o’ salt.
real classy from Bobby
He will always have a place in the Pantheon of the Sox, simply for being a large (ahem) part of the ‘05 winner. He also showed a surprising ability to become more than just a thrower under Coop’s tutelage. Although his fatness always provided a built in “I told you so” among the fanbase whenever he fucked up — he never pulled a Dibble or an F-ROD and from all appearances seemed a mature individual on and off the field.
I hope he gets paid and I wish him good fortune going forward.
Sox in drivers seat for Paulie, according to heyman this morning
Also thinking about how bad the sox are going to be defensively next year last night. We got two studs in Che and rios, duds in Juan, Q! and AJ, a so so bacon, average and declining Paulie or piss poor Dunn, and a rookie in Morel or god forbid Tea Bag at third. Not sure what those metrics measure out to, but that’s got to cost us some wins.

I thought that Frenchy was above average defensively, but did better running every ball into the infield, his arm was so weak
And my recollection is that Bacon is an above average defender, too. AJ’s solid defensively, just no arm. Morel and Vizquel at 3B is definitely above average, and Teahan will be super-utility guy.
how about we just call teahen "utility guy".
super seems a bit unwarranted.

Colin...
Depends on where the SS fields the ball. If the SS fields the ball near the infield grass or in the base path, the throw is shorter than a 3B’s throw. Only if he fields and throws from deep in the hole is it farther. A 3B’s throw can sometimes be more difficult than a SS’s, depending on where the 3B fields the ball.
To say that one doesn’t have the arm for SS, but has the arm for 3B is wrong. But don’t take my word for it, go out to a diamond and experiment.

you think i haven't?
i played plenty of SS in my day. i know what i’m saying. SS needs the most arm. 3B makes almost all his throws going toward 1B. anything taken on the backhand (other than a smash) is automatically a harder throw. scouts will tell you SS need more arm.
Fireworks: Bang?
You made a blanket statement: SS has the longest/most-difficult throws.
This is incorrect. The correct answer is: it depends. It depends on where the ball is hit, where it’s fielded. Just because one doesn’t have the arm for SS doesn’t mean one can go play a great 3B. It depends on how bad that person’s arm is. You are making it sound like anyone who can’t make the throws from SS can go play a good 3B. Some throws from 3B can be incredibly difficult, and so can some throws from SS. It depends, Colin, where it is hit.
I’m not saying, nor did I ever say, that a 3B needs a better arm than a SS. They both need good arms. To assert, like you did, that Vizquel doesn’t have the arm for SS, but is fine at 3B, depends on your definition of fine. If he can’t make some throws from SS, he won’t be able to make some throws from 3B. Period. A lot of the motions are the same, and 3B is a bit farther, and can be a lot farther if the ball is hit off to the foul side of the bag.
Be careful making blanket assertions.

wow.
just admit you were wrong, man. there is no question that a ss requires the stringest arm in the infield. in fact, a ss usually has the strongest arm on the field, including pitcher and catcher.

I like my arms stringy
but hes right. overall, SS has the longest distance on all playable balls, but can also be a lot closer than 3B, Vizquel cant throw from SS anymore and in my opinion, hes barely passable

from 3B
its not like he cant throw from SS but is still good from 3B

Not sure
How can you say Pierre and AJ are good defensively, even though their arms are weak? That makes up the metric. Omar is still a good glove man, but his range and arm are going. Morel may be a decent fielder in the minors, but a full year at third in a rookie year could make him fall off a little. I guess my point of this costing wins might be off. But, I do think there is potential for disaster in the field. Age factor, a surprisingly decent year by Juan, and Q! in right could pose problems

i said nothing about AJ
go look at the leaders in UZR for leftfielders last year. juan pierre plays a good defensive corner outfield.

unsure if there are enough play attempts, but if you take the last three years
juan pierre is among the leaders in UZR for LF

He was very very good.
Does UZR take into consideration the JumpThrow?

This is about as good as we've been defensively
Since the Rowand/Crede/Uribe days of yore
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YK2-rNQfGg
Surprisingly Jose Valentin was also very good according to both TZR and UZR
Never really thought of the team as defensively good since we always seem to build around aging sluggers, but evidently it wasn’t half-bad for a while there.

if konerko comes back the only difference will be third base and by all accounts morel is an improvement there.

This will be a good discussion come Spring Training, but right now....
Morel stands to replace Teahen, and that alone should give us back at least 1 win (I think 2).
another year of Bacon at 2B and he should improve, becoming close to average, slightly above defensively.
Che, Rios, Pierre should stay about the same.
The only sore spots on the field will be 1B and RF. Lefties are going to give them trouble. If I get my wish, Quentin isn’t brought back and is replaced with a plus (I’ll accept average) fielding RF. If Quentin is brought back, then I’m hoping he and Andruw will split time. If not Andruw then some plus fielding outfielder for a late inning replacement.

Not sure why people lump PK in the "bad defense" group.
I get that his UZR was quite terrible in 2010, mostly because of limited range, but he saved quite a few errors on poor throws. That’s a big part of being a first baseman. I wouldn’t consider him a liability in the field, especially due to the position he plays. No where near the liability Quentin will be in RF (he’s going to be the starter there on opening day whether we like it or not).
As for 4th OF, I’d much rather us go after a speed/defense, relatively-consistent-bat type. As opposed to the average D and all-or-nothing approach Andruw brings at the plate.
I think it should be a given that our 4th OF should be the type you describe
With Kotsay gone, I guess that’s De Aza? Though he ain’t that fast, or that good with the glove.
And it sure as hell ain’t Teahen.

AJ is average, Juan is above average and Morel is partly basing his career on a slick glove
They should be fine defensively. Not great, but not horrible either.
I have doubts about UZR, but Juan is a big plus for his career, which is a big sample, very big.
I’ll give you AJ might not be average. He’s not a butcher though either.
he was positive last year as well. I dunno, he has a noodle arm but seems to have solid range
his SB totals and success rate seem to indicate he hasn’t slowed down much.
yes. he is an average or so defender.
if you want to get all excited over one year’s worth of “data”, feel free.
recently (last year) pierre was a very good defensive outfielder.
even the ol’ eye test confirmed.
If is is one handed shitting. by winningugly
Catcher defense is pretty tough to measure
But it’s probably safe to say AJ is in the bottom third of the league
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YK2-rNQfGg
he's an above average LF
i thought that’s what was meant. given the pos adj, AJ qualifies as “above average” i’m sure.
Fireworks: Bang?
I wonder if Pierre were a much better hitter, say a .350 wOBA type
there would be more people saying his defense were above average.
