Reinsdorf: Put Thomas in HOF
"I never saw Joe Jackson, he was a little before my time," Reinsdorf said by phone following Thomas' retirement from baseball. "I started following baseball in 1945 and the only right-handed hitter I've seen since then that I would put in the same class as Frank is [Cardinals' slugger] Albert Pujols. I can't imagine he doesn't get into the Hall of Fame right away."
As for Thomas' legacy as a slugger never suspected of steroid use, Reinsdorf added, "He should have won a third MVP," referring to 2000, when Thomas was edged out in the balloting by Jason Giambi, who later admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs that season.

Jerry needs to put his focus on finding some extra cash to get this Damon deal done,
not worrying about former players.

I think he can spare a moment for the greatest player for whom he's ever signed a check on the day of his retirement.

classless shitbag he may be
but he is the best basketball player of all time. As Reinsdorf owns both the Sox and the Bulls I was just saying he’s probably the greatest player he’s ever signed…it was tongue in cheek as you were certainly referring just to the baseball side of things

You could flip damon/beckham and rios/ramirez I guess….I still think a jones would get some ab’s and ozzie would also find some for kotsay. Signing damon would create that “buzz” that I think would give a nice boost to ticket sales. Besides, let’s say it’s july 10 and the twins are running away with it and we are out of the wc the sox have some pieces that could help recoup the 5-7 it would take to sign damon. Damon himself, konerko, jenks, putz, etc. Again, the “under the radar” nature of how this thing is playing out might be a good sign for those hoping it happens which should be everybody.

Regardless of how much I like Beckham, why on earth would we bat him third?
I can understand if he comes out of the gate strong and hits like a beast why they would move him there, similar to the way they handled Q! in 2008. But batting him third based on a little more than half a season’s stats, factoring in the move to second, and factoring in that we are hoping he doesn’t have a sophomore slump…that’s a lot of pressure on the kid and a HUGE assumption about the kind of production he’ll contribute. Almost as huge as the assumption Ozzie is making about the rotating shit-storm at DH. And I’m assuming when you say “crockpot” you mean Teahen. And why would Teahen hit in front of Ramirez?

look at Ramirez's splits at 9th compared to everywhere else
the numbers shoot way up
and I like beckham at third because he can be our most consistent rbi producer, so why not put two people in front of him
however, ozzie will probably put him at fifth and Q at sixth until the second week or so before moving them up

an AL team not having a DH is like a giraffe fucking a mule. - larry
Should we bat Teahen 5th because his splits indicate that is where he performs best?
Ramirez’s homerun and RBI totals more than double when batting 8th. Now given, a big part of that is because he’s played almost twice as many games batting 8th. Ramirez played 30 of his 40 games batting 9th in 2008…when he was filling in for Uribe at 2nd…when he got hot. What sounds more realistic: That Ramirez is roughly a .270 hitter when batting 8th or that Ramirez is roughly a .380 hitter batting 9th? All I’m saying is that I think Ramirez deserves more RBI opportunities than Teahen. If Alexei played 33 more games batting 9th there would be more conclusive evidence. And I’m almost certain that those 33 games would drop his numbers significantly.

from 6-9 in the order it really doesn't matter that much who hits where.
ozzie’s left right lineup at the bottom of the order makes as much sense as anything.
Doesn't it matter in games that are close or tied late and in extra innings?
Every time the lineup turns over don’t you want to have the right guys in place who have a better chance at driving in guys from the top and middle of the order?

you obviously took a longer look than I did
but then whats the difference between second and third for beckham?
RIP Jim Thome 1-25-2010
an AL team not having a DH is like a giraffe fucking a mule. - larry
That's a very fair question.
Beckham was hitting second in the lineup quite a bit in 2009. I would just prefer to keep him where he’s comfortable. Suppose the leadoff guy fails to get on…there’s a big difference between hitting with one out and hitting with two outs. Beckham has a bright future, no doubt. But I think the less pressure that’s put on him early on the better the results will be. That’s just my theory on the game. It has to be terrifying for any young player in the major leagues to come to Chicago and have the expectation of being the next big thing who will hopefully deliver a championship.
Seems like people around here forget just how good of a rookie year Alexei had in 2008, but it didn’t warrant being moved up to third in the lineup. It’s perfectly cool for us to have different philosophies on how the lineup should look. That’s what makes baseball so much fun. Speculation is a blast from where we are at. But I think we can both agree that a healthy Q! would have a major positive impact on the rest of the lineup.

if that’s out there, he takes it. done. perhaps he thinks he can sign a 1 year deal and then get a longer term deal next offseason. if that’s the case, then he’s already signed for 1/8 or something. i think it’s pretty clear that the offers aren’t that good. i’m not saying i think the sox sign him, but i wouldn’t be surprised if he signs for 1/5-6. there doesn’t seem to be a market.

Last year, theSox gave up 4 less runs than the Red Sox.
They added Peavy and will have a much improved defense.
Red Sox are projected to give up 60 less runs than the Sox.
Fuck computers.
They did add Lackey.
But that’s not remotely enough to make up that difference.

Omar loves the arts and probably got a season pass to the Field Museum
Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Tribe not make an effort to sign Omar Vizquel? They had a need for a veteran utility infielder, the money was not unreal, and he would have obviously provided a marketing boost. I get that Jim Thome and Manny Ramirez aren’t coming back, but this one really is a head scratcher. — Steve Cornelius, Avon Lake
Hey, Steve: Talked with Adam Katz, Vizquel’s agent, at the winter meetings. Yes, the Indians were interested in re-signing Vizquel, but Vizquel made it clear that he wanted to go to a big-city team that had a thriving art community and lots of museums. Honest. Cleveland was on his list, but Chicago held a bigger allure. It had nothing to do with what the Indians did or didn’t do.

Verducci weighs in:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/tom_verducci/02/12/verducci.thomas/index.html
He’s been a Frank advocate for awhile.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
Frank Thomas
Never saw anyone hit the ball so hard, so consistently. He’d wait back till absolutely the last moment and then shift his weight to the front foot and just mash the ball with absolute ferocity. His home runs weren’t his most impressive hits, it was those knee-high outside fastballs that he would hammer on a line into right center that I considered his artistry. He’d take the pitcher’s best pitch and just absolutely destroy it. Tried to find an image of him on his front foot and laying into it into right center, this is the closest I could find:

When he was younger he’d crowd the plate and when they came inside he’d back off with histrionics and get the walk. For whatever reason, the umps started calling the inside strike on him once he turned 29 or so. He wasn’t nearly as fearsome once he had to protect the inside of the plate, the inside strike was his kryptonite. But when he was young and able to fearlessly lay into that low outside fastball he was fucking magnificent. Frank Fucking Thomas, it was a pleasure – thank you.
No animals were harmed during the making of this comment.
by ChicagoPete on Feb 14, 2010 8:25 PM CST reply actions 4 recs
that's spot on
i think the umps finally got fed up with his constant griping. note how well he is balanced in the pic above. late in his career he tried to upper cut everything, i guess he was trying to ensure the 500 homers and a HOF ticket.
It seems like they started disrespecting him for whatever reason
Jordan always got the calls, even when he lost a step. But with Frank, it just seemed like the bastards just decided once offseason that they were going to start calling that on him and that’s it. When they started calling that inside strike, for a couple years he always had that bewildered, “Oh God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” look on his face.
On the outside pitch he was so strong, he could check his swing no matter how much he’d committed to the pitch. He never really adjusted to that inside fastball. Once they started calling that a strike on him he looked mortal.
No animals were harmed during the making of this comment.
I'd guess the uppercut came with his ailing feet
If he didn’t hit homers, he wasn’t of much value. The guy couldn’t run.

minimum salary is .5M and wins are going at 3.5M per
on a per player basis, it’s hard to argue any one of those guys is overpaid by an amount that matters. none of them are being paid for even a half win above replacement. it does seem like he wasn’t trying hard to find value though. even if they don’t buy nix as a starter, he is certainly capable of filling in where needed at the league minimum. what does Vizquel add exactly? and why Kotsay over any of the random lefty 4th OFs? if you’re trying to avoid a salary ceiling, this isn’t the way to do it. and you definitely don’t get to say “oh, Johnny Damon wanted 7 but we could only give him 5 per.”

he has won gold gloves before and speaks spanish to help tutor ramirez….. oh wait i thought that is what Ozzie is for? I didn’t get that signing when they made it. Ozzie fell in love with kotsay the 2 months he was on the sox last year…. which is fine i suppose… but it is no reason to not sign Thome, Damon, Dye etc

I don't mind the Vizquel signing.
Anything that keeps Lillibridge from being on the 25-man roster works for me. Vizquel still plays excellent defense, so when Alexei needs days off it won’t hurt our pitching staff when the bench player fills in. I loved our bench for what I originally thought it was…and then our bench became a DH. And that’s what I have a problem with.

would be an outstanding sig. Well done.

Sounds like a real estate firm.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
I think you can look down at Texas's Elvis and see what Vizquel adds
I really don’t have a problem with any of the bench signings. As Servant said below I don’t want them to be the DH but that’s an entirely different matter. Yes it was only 200 something at bats but Kotsay seemed to fit in on the ball club. That’s something the White Sox value. You can’t quantify it but I think far too often saberheads dismiss it. Somehow Jones and Kotsay have become the whipping boys for all this garbage. If the Sox really want Damon they’ll get him.
"You're lucky I'm retired"
Jack Bauer
i see this as a bit of a test
especially since Damon represents all those things that Thome supposedly wasnt. good baserunner, can still play the field, etc.

"Can still play the field"
Maybe re: the ladies. Not in the OF.

he didn't say play it well
physically, he can still play in the OF, whereas Thomer can’t physically play 1B anymore

and he can physically play it well enough (or not badly enough) that the other parts of his game make him a useful player.
unlike, say, dye.
You, too?
Would you rather have Johnny Angel or Branyon/Delgado, et. al. as your DH for the $?

I would have rather had Thome for $1.5 million.
But since that option is off the board, and since I would prefer not to wait until late April or May for Ozzie to realize that his DH strategy sucks worse than calling Mike MacDougal into a close game, Damon seems like the best fit for $5 to $7 million.

They are where they want to be with this.......
“under the radar.” Ozzie isn’t talking, KW is saying next to nothing, JR said “it’s remote,” and they have even paid off Cowley to pretty much keep his mouth shut.
there hasn't been much of anything
from the beat writers since Thursday according to mlbtr, so i would say it looks better now…but you just jinxed the shit out of it.
either way, i’m glad Cheat went with the headline he did for the fanshot, regardless of what if any impact SSS has on the fans/front office.

I also
did not see Shoeless Joe play.

In the article
Jerry mentioned finding a way to get Frank in the organization. Hello new hitting coach and goodbye Walker.
The Cubs are not a baseball team. They are a baseball-themed marketing company that hosts frat parties for post grads and tourists.
that will never happen.
why on earth would frank do that. At most he’ll be a spring training guest instructor/ team ambassador.
Kenwo4life=ratings
He wants to be around the game, perhaps.
I could see it for a season or two if they were unhappy (as we are) with Walk. Which they are not.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
Frank was too good to be a batting coach.
when he was at his best he very rarely slumped. when he was older very few players possess the same power that he had. i think he’d get fed up pretty easily. plus batting coaches make what 800K? he doesn’t need to work that hard for that little.
Kenwo4life=ratings
well whatever.
i didn’t bother to look it up. the point is it is less than a mil. Thomas isn’t going to do that much work for that little pay.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Why not?
And how much work is it? He gets to stay engaged in the game as an active participant. I’d do that.

i wouldn't want to travel that much, at least not anymore.
you know, that whole actually spend time with your kids in a period outside october through january.

I'm sure frank wants to take a beating for not turning around alex rios downward slide
or paul konerkos slump. or alexei ramirez inability to hit in april. highly doubtful.

I dis. Agree.
Much. The family is used to the grind. And Frank is not used to being without baseball. You watch.

so he'll be hitting coach at UNLV where his son is going to play next year.
the list of superstar players, particularly from the more moneyed generations, who become coaches isn’t exactly lengthy. and with good reason. stick with the broadcasting and the spring training instructor gigs.
I equate Frank to Donnie Ballgame.
I think if he can be “likeable” he’ll be part of a team. Not a broadcasting team, either. He’s a ballplayer.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
donnie ballgame?
maybe like donnie baseball he’ll take eight years off and spend time with his family.
Teddy Ballgame, Donnie Baseball.
The concept is the same. Guys don’t leave their job to spend time with their families in their early 40’s. But maybe Frank will do just that.
I’m just sayin’.
I couldn’t figure it out yesterday, but it came to me at 4am. Then I understood the FOGhat, laughed so hard I farted, and went back to bed.
To be with family?
Or because their physical skills are not keeping pace with their desire to continue playing? How old was Walk when he became hitting coach? Baines has 4 kids and by all accounts is a happily married guy. Coop is probably the oldest coach on the team. Most guys are fairly young when they start coaching.

i find it odd that you don't see why someone wouldn't want to spend february through september away from their family not playing baseball and not making much money.
i sure wouldn’t do it. plenty of other pursuits and plenty that are baseball related.
I see why.
I’m saying I also see why not – for the love of the game. And many guys have a very, very hard time letting go of their vocation, especially if it defined them. Ask your folks/relatives who are retired, especially the men. Add “fame/celebrity” and treble those feelings.
