John Danks
Danks... is the best pitcher. He's the ace not jake peavy.
Wanna bet John Danks is the best pitcher in this rotation?
I'd take John Danks over any pitcher the CWS have right now. You now why Danks didn;t sign a multi year contract is cause he's going to be one of the top AL starting pitchers comwe 2011
SB nation with this bullshit limit... can go to hell.
John Danks is the best starting pitcher

I like John Danks, too
I just wish he’d throw more strikes any maybe last until the 7th or 8th inning. Too many 5 inning, 100 pitch games the past two years for my liking.
I think he's overrated by Sox fans
1. Doesn’t get a particularly high number of strikeouts
2. Isn’t especially good at limiting the walks
3. Ground ball rate is nothing special
If he can return to ‘08 level then we have a good pitcher, but if he remains at ’09 level then we have a mediocre mid rotation starter. Either way I’m probably taking Floyd over him, Peavy too.
http://twitter.com/FutureSox
nonsense
1) Fair to assume this 24 year old can prob increase stikeout rate
2) Danks probable gets squeezed more than any starter on the staff
3) 08 Danks who was a 5+ WAR pitcher and 09 was a pitcher who had a circulation problem for a bit and an increased hr/fb rate and not really that different.
Either way you really don’t understand what a mediocre mid rotation starter is. Whether it be WAR, VORP or PRC Danks has been pretty good the last 2 years.
Did I mention he’s 24?

Re: point 3
Don’t you think his increased ‘08 HR/FB was a bit lucky? He pretty much had nowhere to go but up in ’09. Danks had one of the lowest HR/FB of any starter in baseball in ’08 at 7.4%. He also had a career best in limiting fly balls in general that year. Making half his starts in the Cell, preventing the home run at his 5 WAR season level doesn’t seem repeatable. And HR is obviously a main factor in FIP, used for calculating the SP win values
Sure I'd agree with that about the hr/fb percentage in 08
But I also expect less base runners from him and collectively his increasing gb% and decreasing ld% should off set it. I fully expect a 6 WAR season from Danks in the next 3 years. I suspect his agent does too.

Jack Bauer
Yay for making assumptions!
Danks’ ’09: 4.59 FIP, 4.44 xFIP.
I’ll say it again. If Danks continues to pitch at his ‘09 level then we have a mediocre mid rotation starter. I’m a Sox fan, so I certainly hope he turns in an all-world, 6+ WAR god. But I also like to be realistic.

It's got nothing to do with a being a Sox fan.
I know Danks’s FIP and xFIP. Just like I have seen Buerhle’s or Vazquez’s. And no you aren’t being realistic. And no you obviously don’t know what mediocre is.
"You're lucky I'm retired"
Jack Bauer
Or maybe I should say it another way.
Even with Danks problems last year that caused his drop in K rate he still put up a 2.9 WAR season with a 123 ERA+. Who are all these “other” mediocre mid rotation starters doing that?

I like the clashing concepts that comprise "mediocre mid-rotation"
Mediocre = nothing special
Mid-rotation = At least slightly above average

Mediocre = average
But it’s like the term “soft ace”, or weak no. 2 starter. Or at least that’s how I intended it, mediocre mid rotation starter being an average number 3.

and that isn't a slight on anyone, because i imagine i've thrown at least mid-rotation around.
but they’re vague and imprecise.
Mediocre = Barely adequate
If you want to say “average,” well, that’s why the word “average” exists.

i've come to prefer using above average, average, below average when describing players.
seems simple enough. if you want to call someone a mid-rotation starting pitcher, seems like it is clearer to just call them an average starting pitcher. if you think someone is an ace, call them a well-above average starter.
A mid-rotation starter would seem better than average just be intuition.
Compared to Harts and Fisters being back-end, anyway.

why?
again what the hell does “mid-rotation” mean? whose mid-rotation? white sox? royals? some fake team? why not just stick to he’s an average starter, meaning he provides average production for a starting pitcher?
You equated mid-rotation to average. I'm not sure what others think of it as.
I’m good with average.

i quickly click past lengthy conversations about this topic on minor league sites all the time.
no one has a single definition.
Somebody rec'd this, really?
I’m well aware of what his WAR was, of what his FIP was, his ERA, ERA+, tRA etc. etc. All I’m saying is, if he continues to pitch with his ‘09 K%, BB% and batted ball %’s, he will, in my opinion, be a mid rotation starter with a FIP in the 4.20-4.50 range.

perhaps the issue
is that would imply about a 4 WAR pitcher. which many might hazard to call a “good pitcher”, something you denied.
since we're talking precision here
and we don’t really know all the future factors for computing WAR, a better thing would be to simply cite a range. the range you suggested implies above average production from a starting pitcher.
that would make Lopez a middle of the order hitter, though.

So, I get my head bit off for a couple of miss-spelled words in my fanpost about "PhotoShop",
and this guy who may or may not be the real John Danks, gets off with nothing after this?
