White Sox Minor League Update: Where Future Gold Glove DHs Are Born
So there's enough new prospect crap out there to necessitate an offseason post.
First, Baseball America released their Top 100 List. Jared Mitchell is #55, Tyler Flowers in #60 and Daniel Hudson is #66.
Next, as Ryno pointed out in a Fanshot he posted whilst I was awaiting the release of BA's list, something called Diamond Futures ranked Hudson #79, MItchell #83 and Dayan Viciedo #90.
And, yes, we have more lists. Project Prospect released their Top 100. Hudson is ranked #30, Mitchell is ranked #55, and Flowers is ranked #78.
What's that you say - you'd like another list? But of course. Baseball Intellect published their Top 15 White Sox Prospects. Nothing really out of the ordinary with their list but they do provide another take and use video links in their analysis, which is helpful.
I'm out of lists now but let's wrap up with some general minor league links:
Good compilation of minor league run environments. Obviously something which is very important to keep in mind when evaluating players. Kannapolis' staff, for example, looks better in a vacuum but the Sally League doesn't score a lot as a whole. The Pioneer League, where Great Falls is, scores lots of runs.
Batted ball data has long been a point of contention (was it a flyball? line drive? stringer's bias). Harry provides some preliminary work on this at the minor league level. One interesting find is that Huntsville in the Southern League (where the Barons play) has stopped categorizing line drives and simply sticks to flyballs and groundballs.
SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

The title says it all. But a question since the search function seems to be down:
Was there a specific reason why Donny Lucy split time between AAA and AA last year other than his (lack of) hitting?
"his ballerness could not be stoped which rose his era to 5.42 "
he's an organizational player now.
they send him where a catcher is needed. tyler flowers’ promotion is the answer.
Cave (Kuysner) will retire some day, dammit.
I just don’t feel like killing anyone else for as long as I can help it.
I realize this is a totally broad quetion
but what kind of line are you looking for from Viciedo this year to return the luster? Or are there certain skills/stats that we should just focus on for the improvement?
"You're lucky I'm retired"
Jack Bauer
that will depend upon where he is.
if the rumors of charlotte are true, it could be somewhat ugly again. he should be in AA and i would want to see across the board improvements, likely on the order of a .050 in OBP and .100 SLG.
not exactly a large number of comps for him.
as was discussed many times, there aren’t a lot of 20 year olds playing in AA. i would suggest that a first baseman in whom you’ve invested 8 figures should be able to OPS .850 in a repeat of AA if he wants to be taken seriously.
Nice title.
And myboy Mitchell jumps to the front of the pack. Future Willie Mays (lite).

He knows how comparable players work.
Jared Mitchell: I’ve been compared a lot to Carl Crawford and I think that is fairly accurate. I like his style and the way he plays the game. He’s fun to watch. I grew up watching Griffey, Andruw Jones, and Torii Hunter. Love the way those guys play the game.

larry lawyer needs to ask better questions.
should have asked how he feels about interview kidnappings.
You guys win. You can keep your little marked-out piece of internet territory. Spend your days communicating via keyboard with people too ugly for the real world and too nerdy for anyone to care, anyway. Your piece of land is here. Do the rest of civilization a favor and stay within its limits. You bore me. Have fun with your nightly sobs and screams into your pillow over your inability to attract a good mate, Radiohead. ~The Hooligan

good for you. if i'm going to ask a question, i think i can come up with something better than "being more aggressive in hitters counts?"
whatever the fuck that means.

• Among the other pitchers at that minicamp, righthander Nate Jones also impressed. Jones, who has a plus curve and fastball that touches the high 90s, could move quickly as a reliever but will be considered as a starter with Double-A Birmingham.

interesting look at amateur foreign signings by organization
white sox don’t come out too badly, despite having less of a presence internationally.
Well, not exactly a flawless "system"
With the number 30 prospect in the worst system in baseball having the same value as the no. 1 prospect in baseball.
But yeah, the White Sox didn’t come out too badly and it is interesting to look at.

Dayan Viciedo did an excellent job at first base in the B game today. Made one good scoop on a wide throw and looks to have good hands there
hurray for sss

not really going out on a limb here but
i think Viciedo is going to surprise this year and quiet all those people laughing at us for paying him that 10 mil.
I got my eye on him more than anyone else in our system.
Zzzzzzzzz.
Watch Che. He’s the Cuban that goes postal on the rest of the league.

so it's our depth that sucks right?
it seems like we always have the average 3 ’spects on the top 100.

Thank you for not bringing up Chris Carter at #11.
Or, Vizquel’s unretired number.

This time of year several sources put out prospect rankings and I decided to to collect as many as I could for a combined ranking. I started collecting them myself, but Joe Hamrahi at BaseballDailyDiget.com did the heavy lifting for me. Today, Baseball-Prospectus released their rankings so it was time to compare the lists.
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2010/3/3/1334997/wisdom-of-the-crowds-2010-prospect
an interesting way to get a feel for how prospects would be ranked outside of the usual top 100 lists
crazy 2000+ player lists notwithstanding…
To go deeper than the Top 100 Prospects list, we decided to have all 11 members of the editorial staff draft the beginnings of their own farm systems, creating their own top 30s. The only guidelines were to build the most talented farm system possible, and you can select only players in the 2010 Prospect Handbook. That’s a pool of 902 players—30 players from the 30 organizations plus Cuban defectors Noel Arguelles and Aroldis Chapman, who were in the appendix before they signed.

Two questions about Mitchell
- What level will he start at and is it reasonable to expect him to reach Birmingham by the end of the year?
- What kind of triple-slash line would constitute a ‘successful’ season?
A+ and yes.
haven’t really thought about a line yet. broadly speaking, i’d like to see the k rate go below 25%. if he replicated his SLG from kannapolis, i’d probably be happy.
This,
though perhaps a Sept. call-up for the hell of it is in the cards if he progesses like Becks did in the minors.
Yeah, I said it. September.
I just don’t feel like killing anyone else for as long as I can help it.
Needless to say, it was a yearlong learning experience for Viciedo, who feels wiser and soon to be older when he turns 21 on Wednesday.
“It’s the first time I played in a league with so many games, and I also adjusted to the system of baseball here,” Viciedo said. "This year, I feel better. I feel prepared. I feel a lot more confident.
Is it fair to say that Viciedo is in the best shape of his life?
More seriously — starting the year at Charlotte? Really? The difference between the two leagues probably isn’t worth a whole lot of consternation, but damn it seems like they’re being aggressive with him.
the stadium there
might help a bit, confidence-wise. hitting the ball out at B-ham is pretty tough.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
Ozzie said he liked the way Charlie Leesman pitched over the final 2 scoreless innings and they would “keep their eyes on him.”
fucking seriously?
that guy has a 71mph heater, the only reason he got any outs was because the batters fell asleep before the pitch got there
