World Wide Web In Front: RETURN OF MUSIC THREAD

OSFIB demanded a new music thread.  So let's talk about anything we've been listening to lately.  Bonus points for talking about things you used to hate but now like.

For me, this includes:

Buddy Holly - Memorial Collection.  Definitely has nothing to do with a girl.  Definitely nothing.

The Stax/Volt Singles Collection - I never realized how great Sam and Dave are.  Or Booker T, who is not a wrestler.  Or knew much else about the label other than that Paul McCartney was looking for the stereotypical Stax horn section sound in Got To Get You Into My Life.

Atlantic R&B Singles Collection '47-'73 - There's some overlap between these two since Atlantic was distributing singles for some Stax singles once they hit it big.  So I've been mostly listening to the non-60's stuff.

Both of these lead me to get some more Sam and Dave, Aretha Franklin's first two albums and some other stuff that isn't coming to mind.

Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle.  Is awesome.

Jay Z - The Blueprint.

I finally listened to some Arctic Monkeys, I think on Keith's rec (possibly Jim's?), and I'm digging that too.  Fake Tales of San Francisco is good.

Anything post-Uptown Girl is worthless and weak. Same thing with Elton John – great early, then got really lame.

Los Campesinos!

I really like the first half of their newest album. Might be sonic overload by the time I get to the second half. I’m going through their back catalogue, and still undecided. I’d see ’em live.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned Pitchfork yet — Raekwon, Modest Mouse and Pavement. I think St Vincent will be there, too. I hope I won’t be in a position to go to Pitchfork — still trying to land an internship/job — but if I am, I think I’m going to have to try and find a way to get tickets.

Dig into the multiple versions of Yeah, they rock.

He plays a 15 minute version of Yeah at Coachella. The walls of the tent were perspiring from the crowd. 5 minutes left in his set. I’m looking at my friends flabbergasted as to what he could possibly do next. The crowd doesn’t get any higher.

He then plays, ‘New York I love you, But you’re bringing me down.’ Never have I ever been crushed by a musician so bad.

I’d like to go all 3 days of pitchfork, especially to see modest mouse again, but i’m afraid time/money will restrict me to just sunday.

varies from band to band

I just know when malkmus played pitchfork 3-4 years ago, he played pavement songs, and I loved it. The quality of sets has varied wildly from band to band, from year to year. Walkmen in 2005 had sound problems. 2009 walkmen was probably the best set of the whole weekend.

Outta sight. Probably. Still haven’t listened to the whole thing enough.

Yeasayer is uneven but has some amazing moments.

Used to not like? Well, about anything under the heading of “Classical.” I’ve actually discovered that I can get stuff done with WFMT playing in the background and normally I hate music playing while I’m trying to work. I’m not nearly at the point of particulars or even anything beyond a surface appreciation, but it is something new.

it's worth noting

that the bands probably get more money from going to their label and ordering. i suppose those could be a loss leader like best buy does with their cds, but i don’t think that’s the case though. also i think BB does a lot to pressure labels into cutting prices since they’re a high percentage of sales for many albums. similar to Wal-Mart’s general practice, iirc.

I've been to four of those five

Coachella is amazing if you can deal with the desert. Usually awesome people to hang out with, reasonably priced beverages and only saw a dude get tasered once. And the headliner is always rad.
Bannaroo never been.
Pitchfork was fun, but its not something I wish I always went to. But that’s probably because I only really dig like half of the guys who play and I kind of don’t like that park even when I lived over there.
Lolla’s small stages are surprisingly cozy. If you see a band you like playing a side stage, jump all over it. The trees are full of leaves and are hanging over the street and stage. They create a natural venue. The bandshell blows goats. The other three big stages are okay.
SXSW is gundam amazing. Its the rough equivalent of the greatest 4 days of your life. I’ve only partaken in the music portions, there’s a ton of other stuff before hand, but going to 12-20+ small venues and parking lots catching bands and getting lots of free beer and swag and hitting random parties is amazing.

Classical was mentioned earlier, but I strongly suggest this:

“Eight Seasons”, an album by Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica. It’s an interpretation of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” (played straight and beautifully) combined with Astor Piazzolla’s versions of same. Let me try that again:

Kremer interprets Piazzolla’s interpretation of Vivaldi, as well as his own (Kremer/Vivaldi)!

For those not familiar with Piazzolla, he turned Tango on its head by incorporating jazz, dissonance, and classical elements to what was basically whore house music.

Anyway, you can hear some cuts here. I’d suggest #1 to start, and remind yourselves that you already know this music. Then go to #4 for a taste of Tango/Classical.

I thank you. I was raised on the Dead, my first name is Stephen so you can guess what my parents favorite song is.

I used to follow around Phish and another band (Sound Tribe Sector 9) and this shit is cracking me up. While there are some great people going to shows, I have also met and seen some of the shadiest people doing the shadiest shit at shows.

I still go see Phish quite a bit though.

mostly agree

i loved all of those bands in high school and only the popes still hold up for me, but they were from the same area and always played shows in my town, so there’s a nostalgia factor. and every now and again there are a few bad religion songs i can still enjoy, like “heaven is falling.”

Old hip-hop (Arrested Development, Naughty by Nature, Wreckx-n-Effect)

mixed with funk (James Brown, Rick James, Ohio Players), sprinkled with Eagles of Death Metal, topped off with Beck (“Sea Change”), and gayed up with Duncan Sheik (attending a concert of his here with my wife this month – we started dating when his “Barely Breathing” CD came out – good memories).

Ok, so honestly... this is great.

I know I’ve offered plenty of words on Porcupine Tree, but here are a few more, inspired by the live DVD/Blu-ray being released next month.
As if April couldn’t get any better!!

The live DVD was filmed over two nights in Tilsburg in 2008, and the quality is superb, as far as I can tell from this video (and knowing that Steve Wilson does NOT slack on quality).

So about this song….

It’s more or less dedicated to a huge fan of PT’s, a 17 year-old who was killed by a train in 2005. You can see the stage video in some shots from this performance – a girl walking down tracks.

The way I imagine the song, the first minute/verse is her perspective…
The next is that of her family, loved ones….intense. (And I’ll try to forget even your name
And the way that you look when you’re sleeping, and dreaming of this
)

Then calamity and dissonance, followed be a peaceful resolve, possibly representative of death.

Musically, I think this is tops. Gavin Harrison’s drumming (throughout, and notably at the end during the “come-down” jam) is ridiculous. And it’s a great video to show you Steve Wilson’s style, his guitar and his awesomeness. I am very captivated by his craft.

Ok, let your “hsa’s rambling again” jokes abound, but seriously, watch this video in full. Not casually listen… watch.
I’d even recommend several viewings since there is no way you can take it all in with just one.
;)

HERE is the video on youtube – a performance of “Way Out Of Here.”

ENJOY!

i’ve listened to it once so far, and at first blush its another disapointment. This is really disheartening to me, as this was the first band I really loved. Its called the brutalist bricks

shake the sheets is pretty solid. Me and Mia, Bleeding powers and walking to do are all as good as any song hes put out. I just think limiting his band to a power trio was a bad move, as it removed the wonderful possibility for songs like Tell Balgeary, Balgury is dead and The crane takes flight. It’s more like he noticed everyone really liked Where have all the rude boys gone? and just tried to write a full album of that. He’s at his best when hes more adventuresome. (Not counting "bomb. repeat. bomb.) My favorite track on Living with the Living was annunciation day for that reason.

Now im going to listen to ted leo all day.

i was just about to report that

i’ve heard jesus walks too many times. plus i can’t take it seriously since it’s kanye, y’know? he really needs to hand off the vocals to someone who’s better at it.

also, why don’t producers make their own albums? why do you have to be an MC to call it your album? kanye’s talents are pretty obvious but they do not extend much past making the music. which is what i’m in it for anyway, so that’s not hate.

wu tang is pretty overrated, i actually agree w/ wtgtd

36 chambers was great. one of the best ever, ill give you that. its all been downhill from there though for like 15 years.

I also blame them for kind of ruining rap. After they came out everybody had like 15 mother fuckers on stage with mics saying whatever they wanted and pretty much losing any semblance of music at live shows.

I think hip-hop as a whole is just a watered down played out version of what it used to be though so I cant say I even know most of the stuff out there now.

Overrated by whom? SSS? The general public?

It certainly can’t be the latter. I’m not that in tune with what’s considered popular but it’s not too often that I run into someone who mentions Wutang as one of their favorites.

Frustrating as hell

really bad basketball game, too — Marquette, the best three-point shooting team in the country, shot something like 15% yesterday, and ND didn’t shoot much better. They just sucked less.

And despite all this, Marquette still should have won it. Buzz Williams has done a fantastic job this year but he doesn’t inspire confidence in end-of-game situations. For whatever reason he doesn’t have his players foul when up three and the other team has the ball (talking under 10 seconds here). Marquette got lucky in the past when it didn’t burn them — yesterday it did.

In any case I can’t complain. Check out pre-season predictions of where Marquette would finish — most had them at the bottom of the Big East. Instead they go 11-7 in conference and didn’t lose a game by >10 points. Anything from this point on is gravy.

That’s too bad about Purdue’s injury. Do they have realistic hopes of going beyond the Sweet 16 at this point?

I hate to sound like one of those awful hiphop nerds who can’t get enough of anything with Wu- in front of it (like, say, me a dozen years ago) but you could pick a fifth tier Wu record (Killarmy?) and find much more intriguing production, much more artful rapping.

You can say the same for any socially conscious rapper out there, or any guy who’s built a rep based on drug dealing, getting shot, whatever.

A lot of these guys don’t know how to make better music as they age. The genre is built on bravado, misogyny, that after a certain point you can’t take them seriously.

stereolab was the saddest music ever for awhile

not sure if they still do it, but after one of the female leads passed away, they replaced her vocal lines with a french horn. it was beautiful but sad.

and death cab is emo. do you expect that genre to do something other then be embarrassed it exists?

I like him alright, but there is a lot of filler. If you combine Illinois and Avalanche, you can get one great album out of it, and one full-length CD of time-wasting. Michigan is a more efficient effort.

I play it when I’m working, but it’s nothing I’d listen to while walking, or in the car.

Titus Andronicus is putting out a new album shortly

and you can stream it at their myspace page. If you haven’t listened to their first album, “The Airing of Grievances,” I’d recommend it. They opened up for Los Campesinos a year or two back in Madison and were excellent.

I went to see the documentary at the Music Box (hipster!) when it came out. Powerful.

There is a recent Steve Earl episode of Austin City Limits where he covers nothing but TVZ. His delivery is chill-inducing. Almost like he loves the songs more than TVZ did.

Also, Handsome Family is good if you’re into that dark folk/country stuff.

You get the mono or the stereo?

Though the quality is obviously really, really good (and I’m glad I bought), I haven’t noticed anything “new” on the stereo versions.

by The Actual El Guapo on Mar 4, 2010 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Stereo. There are some very sublte things, due to the much improved sound, but I also question if they simply raised the levels on some tracks to make them sound new/better.

I just listened to A Day in the Life new and old. The bass line is so clear you can hear Paul padding the strings on upbeat, and you couldn’t hear it on the old version.

Also, my kids and I have also been doing quite a bit of dancing around the living room to Dad’s old vinyl, so the improved sound quality is probably extra shocking to my ears.

watched control recently

which put me on an extremely satisfying joy division and new order kick. i also recommed the movie. other stuff:

local natives – gorilla manor
surfer blood – astro coast
japandroids – post-nothing
animal collective – merriweather post pavillion
the national – boxer
bon iver – blood bank

one band i initially didn’t like that’s now it my all time top 5 is the smiths. first heard them when i was 13 or so and up to that point had only been listening to classic rock, top 40, and 80s metal. thankfully i met cool people in high school that expanded my musical horizons.

by Ryno on Mar 4, 2010 3:18 PM CST reply actions

control is a fantastic movie

i never saw the documentary that came out around the same time, have you?

local natives and surfer blood i’ve seen name checked, but haven’t heard / know nothing about, can you describe?

by onlysoxfaninbasel on Mar 5, 2010 2:27 AM CST up reply actions

agreed about control. loved it.

i’ve never seen the documentary, but i’m certainly primed for it now. i’m also interested in 24-hour party people, which covers the rise of factory records and is supposed to be pretty good.

surfer blood sounds a lot like early/mid-90s power pop. i definitely understand the comparisons to early weezer, and a little bit of shins. other comparisons i’ve heard to built to spill, pavement, and the pixies just seem sort of lazy. the music is guitar-driven, hooky, and a little bit surf rocky, as their name would indicate. not a great album, but a good one with a handful of standout tracks.

local natives have a more ambitious sound (they cover talking heads ‘warning signs’ and it fits in with the rest of the album), and where surfer blood is guitar music, this album is far more about percussion and vocal harmonies. they call to mind what grizzly bear might sound like if they had some mild stoner/jamband tendencies. they also have a big, boisterous sound at times that reminds me a lot of annuals.

And I agree with Lennon – “Got To Get You Into My Life” and “Yesterday” are Paul’s best stuff. Hate to say it from an OPOS point of view, but you have no idea what it was like hearing thisstuff before anything like it came out. You need to listen with ears that have not heard such things before. Elvis and the Beatles pretty much enabled you guys to hear the stuff you were yammering about earlier in this thread. "You need to listen with ears that have not heard such things before."

That’s understood. But I find it hard to pretend I can. I listen to “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and “A Hard Days Night” and compare it to early Who, like “Substitute,” “Anyway Anyhow Anywhere” or “Circles” and I think the latter smokes the former.

That’s not knocking the Beatles’ early stuff. But when I listen to it, it seems like a logical graduation from, say, Buddy Holly, whereas with the Who, there’s some aggression and defiance that still resonates as pretty ballsy, well after the fact.

When you get to “A Day in the LIfe,” “Norwegian Wood,” “Eleanor Rigby,” etc. — those have an awesome quality to them — like, “How’d they find that ground at that point?” And I can see why people still obsess over those.

The early stuff? They did it better than anybody at that point, but it’s been done better since — including by the Beatles themselves. So I don’t see the need to overpraise their early stuff, which a lot of people seem to do because other people have.

couldnt agree more.

the stones were just as campy as the beatles out of the gate.

Let it Bleed is one of my favorite albums of all time and definitely took them in a new direction.

Nice.

Much respect for the LIB reference.

"a logical graduation from Buddy Holly"

is exactly how i’d put it. but i happen to like BH and so i dig those singles. they obviously don’t rock as hard as The Who, but the Beatles never rocked as hard as them, outside of Helter Skelter.

I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.

The Beatles were adapting from the white bands of the '50's.

The Who and Stones were adapting a harder edge – the blues. You could say the same thing about the Yardbirds (Clapton/Beck). I just think the oldest Beatles was so groundbreaking for mainstream America it made the others you mentioned a bit easier to integrate into the States.

I prefer the aggression of the Who/Stones, but the Beatles are timeless elevator music – and that is not knocking them. No overpraising – I take issue with those who say “The Beatles suck”.

Haven't been able to search out a whole lot of new music

but 2 groups and 1 song that I like a lot right now:

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
Them Crooked Vultures – Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones, and Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age)
That Girl by Two Fingers

anyone listen to Slum Village?

Fantastic Vol 2 is pretty great so far. i think pretty much everyone here would like it, old folks included.

Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things

Its not his finest album, but the opening track is a thing of beauty. Fat bass lines over drum loops. It has more in common with improvisational jazz then electronica.
