The danger, though, is to leave his office thinking Guillen is a comedy club act, a notebook filler and nothing else.

But have you noticed that only two American League managers -- Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels and Ron Gardenhire of the Minnesota Twins -- have more continuous time with the same club than Guillen, who is beginning his seventh season with the Chicago White Sox? And how about this little stunner: Guillen says he wants to manage long enough to have a chance at the Hall of Fame.

"That's the only way I'm going to be there," Guillen, 46, says. "I want to. Am I going to? It's up to my players."

Guillen talks, sometimes too much for his own good. But he can manage, a fact that often gets tsunami'd by wave after wave of Ozzie stream of unconsciousness.

ozzie is a good enough manager

we’ve all been over his weaknesses and strenghts quite a bit. I think he’s earned a right to stay on as long as the team continues to be moderately successful. A couple more 72 win years and I wouldn’t care if he was fired or left.

plus he’s an awesome salesman for the org that drums up some publicity outside of Chicago, I see that as a positive in addition to his on-field stuff. The popularity of the Sox among latin americans and US Hispanics is probably helped quite a bit by Ozzie.

god, compared to what we had to put up with before ozzie?

Manual and Bevington? Give me a fucking break, Ozzie encompasses the sox fan base. He has a great pulse on the city. He sees what we see and calls it how we see it for the most part. There is no manager in baseball i’d rather have. At least with the sox, he is a perfect fit.

Off the field, Floyd and Danks have developed a close friendship, and they spend a lot of free time playing the science fiction video game “Halo.” Although Floyd is generally acknowledged as the superior player, he has a little Gaylord Perry to his game.

There’s no escaping this conclusion: the Stat Geeks have quietly and insidiously taken power. Every hot stove report I’ve read this offseason, every article written from Fort Myers, every statement from Sox brass, has the Stat Geeks’ grubby little fingerprints on it. They’re like the Communist Party plotting to take over Hollywood in the 1950s before Ronald Reagan got wise to them and kicked their pinko butts all the way back to Moscow and Harvard Square. Only, instead of trying to write screenplays full of anti-capitalists rants, the Stat Geeks have succeeded in making otherwise normal, decent, God-fearin’ Americans start talking about VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) ratings and UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) numbers like they really believe in this nonsense.

this whole thing is fantastic
But then, I made an amazing discovery. Something that the Stat Geek population doesn’t know and never will. Women. And it changed my life forever, in much the same way that Blossom’s life changed in that Very Special Episode where she gets her period, I would never be the same. As I recall, the exact moment for me came when Phoebe Cates climbed out of the pool in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and took her top off in slow motion to the Cars’ "In Stereo" that did it for me. What Phoebe showed me that day was perfection. I wanted to have them and I was willing to do what it took to get them. Then my whole world was transformed. Suddenly Butch Hobson’s RBI total didn’t mean quite as much. Jim Rice’s total bases faded from my mind. And for me that mean putting away the Baseball Encyclopedia, getting outside and living an actual life. It also led to other discoveries like jobs, cars, activities, beer and sunlight.

I didnt think Hurt Locker deserved to win

The friendship with the little arab kid seemed contrived.
Theres no way the highest ranking officer at a warehouse with known explosives in it is just talking to a handful of natives all by his lonesome.
Theres no way that a guy with an AK-47 picked off two guys from a half mile away either.

It was good, but not great, certainly not the best of the year.

I liked ‘Sugar’ just as much and the acting was just as bad in that.

by e-gus on Mar 10, 2010 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

yea its posing as some hyper-real film is dumb

But it wasn’t some life-altering experience. I expected it to look amazing, Cameron spent 10 years on it and close to a billion dollars, it wasn’t going to be half-assed.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 10, 2010 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with OM

It was boring because it was too long and the pace of the movie sucked. It was in your face one minute, then slow as hell for the next 15. Yeah the graphics were cool but they were not enough to make the movie good let alone tolerable. Maybe it’s me but I hate movies that drag along, e.g. LOTR.

"You actually talk about me to your wife??? I love it.!"

by Where Triples Go to Die on Mar 10, 2010 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

i found it contrived as shit with cool visuals. the fellatio given to cameron for his “vision” is horse shit. it’s like giving mark cashman the “vision” award for the 2009 yankees.

uh, no. it’s called the common sense award. spend a bunch of money on the best people in the business, play it safe, and pander towards your audience — nothing wrong with that but nothing that groundbeaking either, rather trite if you ask me.

you're being too simplistic

yes, he threw a bunch of money at this, but it’s not as though the technology was just sitting there for the first person to pony up the cash. He worked on it and developed it. Without Cameron there isn’t 3-D that legit, there’s the shitty ass 3-d that everyone else did. Plus he went to absuuuurd extremes in the editing process. I forget the exact quote but he went in and polished frame-by-frame rather than the every 5 frames or whatever is the industry standard.

The visuals were certainly groundbreaking, I don’t see how you can say they aren’t. If that was groundbreaking then I can’t imagine a single development that would register as groundbreaking short of having some sort of interactive movie experience where the ending changes based on the audiences will. The plot, obviously was just recycled cliche after recycled cliche, but Cameron poured a ton of his own time and effort into this movie as he is an absurd control freak.

by jeeves on Mar 11, 2010 3:23 AM CST up reply actions

FWIW

The point of the film had nothing to do with why we’re in Iraq. The point was that it was possible to enjoy danger and warfare and not be a monster.

Of course, I’m definitely part of the white privileged audience it’s going for. But I really took it as an apolitical movie that tried to create a visceral experience that I can’t really imagine.

So sure, a lot of the plot was contrived (especially as it went on), but it wasn’t really about the plot. It was about the feeling.

Oh and one more piece of total BS. He was under the humvee ‘checking the brakes’. He was under the middle of the truck. You take the wheels off.

Bigelow's directed nothing but action movies, and you're taking ware movies way too seriously.

I could give a fuck about whether the Humvee was technically accurate. The movie was tense, had good pacing, and the action scenes paid off.

They made the movie for 20 million yet it was more entertaining and well-done than Transformers. Maybe when the US government decides to throw full military funding into a movie that isn’t about toy robots, her movie can be more technically proficient.

Lets be honest here.

Most Cub fans grew up in families in which they could do no wrong. They are drunk entitled frat boys that were in all white fraternities. If you notice, the only black Cubs they ever like are well spoken, aww shucks, ‘uncle tom’ (no offense to anyone just trying to prove a point) types. Any AA player they have had that had an opinion, they’ve run out of town. I believe SS fans are more tolerant since we generally didn’t grow up under these coddled circumstances. Now I know they have booed more white players off the field than AA players, but I believe they may have a shorter fuse with non-white players. If Sammy Sosa was white (but still a prick) they would still be worshiping him to this day. flame away.

I don't necessarily think that the issue is that white Cubs fans are more racist than white Sox fans.

Look at some of the white trash populating the Cell. I think its that the bleachers at Wrigley are overwhelming white while the Cell has a much larger minority population. A racist would feel much more comfortable yelling racist shit surrounded my white people than he/she would sitting next to an African American.

It's worth discussing the image of minority "Elite Athletes" no matter what the sport.

My girlfriend is a social worker for a certain really dysfunctional school system that has the majority of it’s student base being minorities. The number of kids who she gets that have a life goal of being a pro-athlete despite not even being on the school team is unreal. It would be nice if more minority athletes just went out with a message of “Try your hardest, and maybe just maybe you’ll make it. But have a backup. Hit the books.”

Torii sounds like he is like third or fourth generation Irish or something. “We struggled to get where we are, and now that we’ve made it, it’s time to crap on the next lowest guy on the totem pole for taking our jobs and doing them cheap.”

by South Side Expat on Mar 10, 2010 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

Again another discussion (not saying its not valid)

But I am talking about “real” elite athletes. I simply would like to see more of them play baseball instead of football and basketball.

Fair enough.

I can’t speak for other cities/teams… I just don’t see black baseball players in Chicago going into the “inner City” and giving a positive message. Now, granted, I’m rather ignorant of the whole thing, and maybe it’s there and just needs better PR, but that is what is needed most to get the kids… the good PR.

Whooo Boy… what a can of worms.

It takes more than raw athleticism and hard work to be a good baseball player.

This is less true for the other sports.

the pic was a lay-up

No honestly, I disagree with MM once again. African American ball players are a huge part of MLB history. The Negro League players who were able to break the color barrier is a huge accomplishment for African American people. I was not around to experience first hand, but I would imagine rooting for an African American on your team would make it easier to root for an African American in your everyday life.

There are too many reasons to list as to why more blacks do not play baseball. I think the number 1 reason is Michael Jordan. When kids grow up they want to root for someone that looks like them, I don’t see many kids in the wild 100s rocking Mark Grace or Paul Konerko jerseys. Secondly, I believe that socially, baseball is not as esteemed in the black community as much as basketball and football. This might make a black player whose first love is baseball to play another sport to fit in (look cool, get the ladies). Lastly, the unfortunate economic situation among many “black kids from the south side of Chicago”. We all know that useful equipment is not cheap. You can get a basketball or football for cheap. Many high schools provide basketball players with shoes and accessories. Same for football. In baseball, all the equipment must be bought by the player or the player’s family. Well obviously, if you do not have the disposable income to buy this equipment, you will push your child towards the cheaper sport. To my shagrin, I envision this problem getting worse. So yes Tdogg, I care too.

Well, I think some black baseball players have been getting a lot of exposure lately, which certainly helps.

It would probably take a Jason Heyward to start his career off like Griffey and become the games best player, to make a huge impact. Howard does a great job of promoting, along with Prince and Rollins. Jones and McCutchen are on their way to being pretty good ball players which will help as well. My question is, does Juan Pierre count as an impostor?

Justin Upton may well be the superstar outfielder of the next generation.

It’s going to take more than that to attract young black players. Another reason is that there’s more glory opportunity in basketball and football. Not as much room for style. In baseball you are limited to a fixed number of opportunities at the plate and not that many in the field. Sabathia exemplifies the superstar black athlete to its fullest, and yet I never hear anyone talk about how many Ks he racked up.

i teach at a school where 98 percent is african american.

i’ve taught there for 4 years…. I have students that can tell me every last player on the houston rockets but couldn’t name 3 guys in the MLB. The interest is just not there. I can remember only 4 students specifically that showed any interest in baseball at all.

Most say baseball is boring. Some are afraid of the ball so they never played it (they never say that but they go into a big thing about getting beaned and how they would snap if that happened leading me to believe they are scared of the ball)

others just think it is a white/spanish sport.

Its kind of a shame because a lot of my favorite players are black…. Harold, Frank, Albert Belle, Dye, Eddie Murray, Eric Davis, Darryl Strawberry, Dr. K…. I got love for the brothers (except T-Dogg because he takes too long to draft).

I also think that the civil rights movement gets pushed down the kids throats from the time they are in 1st grade so much that by the time they are in high school they are sick of hearing about the same people (MLK, X, Rosa Parks…etc…) . Jackie Robinson and baseball is always in the discussion….. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. maybe that will be my journal topic for tomorrow.

America is wonderful

because people get to choose. They get to choose! And baseball is a difficult sport. Why don’t more minority kids play golf or tennis? You need a lot of time, a lot of practice, and a lot of $. Basketball is cheap, fast, physical, and gets you on SportsCenter more frequently than baseball.

Personally (within the past 11 years)...

The Royals. Fuck The Royals.

I hate the Twins, I hate the Tribe. Detroit sucks, but I grudgingly give them some props with Leyland coming back and doing what he did in Late ‘05/’06(’07 too if not for the injuries, thank goodness… and fuck Joe Nathan btw.)

I LOATHE the Royals.

I mean, fuck the Twins and the Tribe for their pennant runs… but really, has any team in the past few years made the Sox look like chumps more than the Royals?

I can look up the stats… and know that from ‘98-09, the Sox have the series advantage of 125-78. But damn if those 78 didn’t always seem to occur at a moment to just pop the Sox bubble, the Royals being the Royals and the Sox needing to just dominate a chump team.

Fuck the Royals. It’s not said enough.

Twins by a mile.

Then Cleveland, mostly because of Sizemore and their repulsive, Thome-booing asscock fanbase. KC is a mild irritant.

I have no hate for the Tigers. We almost always own them. Sure, they technically stood in the way of a 2006 playoff berth, but I’m over that. Their park is nice (and friendly to the Sox), and Leyland’s entertaining.
