Community Projection: Mark Teahen

Mark Teahen was a Royal. Try not to hold it against him. He seems like a pretty likable guy, at least in 140-character snippets written from a dog's point of view.

Teahen isn't just the White Sox third baseman of the present, a 3-year extension means he's the third baseman of the future too, for better or, gulp, worse. The trend lines certainly aren't moving in the right direction. He is, however, reaching the prototypical offensive peak years of his career. So it's not ALL bad. And by bidding high I mean over .800 OPS and career high HR(but not quite 20).

I don't get the extension either

It’s not like this guy would be a high demand FA next winter.

I can only speculate that Viciedo had been such a lazy POS last year that they used this signing to motivate him. Not working so far, Cuban pride is seriously lacking. Now they’re stuck with both of them.

His splits in the Cell are favorable.

I boosted his HRs and reduced his other XBH, and went a little friendly with the percentages.

Actually, taking a closer look as his UZR numbers for 3b

odds of a -15 year are low. He posted that in ‘05 but hasn’t come close since. His ‘08 year is only 18 games so I’m ignoring that.

And to compare defense across positions, you need to toss in the positional adjustment. Its harder to play 2b and 3b then rf/lf, so you add a number to convert correctly. 3B is +2.5 and rf is -7.5. so you need to add 10 runs to the 3b score to compare it, apples to apples, with rf.

scalping long. occasionally short, but it's a minefield.

it’s doing crazy volume again, so there’s lots of money out there. i’ve been holding it long the last few night. it’s been a consistent gap-up. i think the easiest play is buy it on the close and sell it on the next open. i’ve been doing that in my ameritrade account to much success. intraday is hairier. get caught on the wrong side of these 1-way moves and you get smoked. i’m churning out the volume. did about a million shares in it today.

god damnit

I have been putting off even thinking about Teahan as the starting 3B. Now I’m forced to not only consider it, but plan for it. Fuck.

Alright fine. I went with 459 pa, 280/320/440 — not really feeling Teahan, even with the bump in power from the Cell. He’ll take less walks and swing for the fences, BABIP will bounce back to the mean and he’ll hit for a higher average.

I guess he’s kinda like Joe Crede with a better back and mediocre defense. Shit, that guy isn’t that good.

by madvillian on Mar 10, 2010 7:35 PM CST reply actions

he was above his own babip average last year

not by much, but some (3 points). both his LD% and FB% were down last year so YES I KNOW those are confused in some parks, but both were down, which says he’s pounding the dirt slightly more often.

oh, and his infield fly rate (infield flys/flys) was up 5 points to 3 points above his average.

to sum up: last year he hit more grounders and more infield flys, which are both terrible for babip. lets hope he doesn’t regress to the mean babip wise as he’s already well over it.

by coffeepac on Mar 10, 2010 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

no no!

We have hope that walk settles his swing to make more liners and less grounders and popups. To the gap! Not the second baseman..

JR on how he looked into his jewball and saw jake peavy as a white sox player.
Reinsdorf, in fact, made that judgment twice — once with regret and once without.

As the story goes, the White Sox tried to acquire Peavy last May 21 before the fireballing right-hander invoked his no-trade clause to stay with the Padres. That first maneuver from Williams was brought to Reinsdorf while he was on break from a Major League Baseball owners’ meeting in New York.

“I’m walking down the street on the way back to the hotel and Kenny calls and lays this on me,” Reinsdorf recounted. "I’m trying to digest the whole thing … what’s our budget? How much can we afford? And he’s got to have an answer, because this thing is hot.

“After thinking it all through, I said ‘OK.’ Then, after I did, and thought it through some more, I said, ‘I shouldn’t have said yes.’ So, when the deal didn’t go down, I was happy.

“Then, we fast forward to July 31, and Kenny sends me an e-mail asking, ‘Do you want Peavy?’ and I replied ‘No thank you.’ But I said, ‘If you want to talk about it, come on in.’ So, he did. He brought in [assistant general manager] Rick [Hahn]. We went through our budget for last year and what our payroll looked like for the next couple of years and concluded we could probably handle it. It’s as simple as that.”

Well, apart from the >20 HR, that's pretty much his last 3 year averages projected for a full, healthy year as a starter

Considering US Cellular and Kauffman Stadium are always at opposite ends of the spectrum for HR park factors, I think you can lower his usual 2B total slightly while increasing the HR total a bit and that’s what you’ll get. But unfortunately this is only half the story and a new park isn’t gonna help his defense

Went high

On the power numbers, 19 HR’s, hoping that playing at the Cell helps, and very high on steals (14), figure Ozzie will have him running like everyone else.
Also was under the assumption playing for a better team has to do something for the guy, but I have no facts to back that up. He also seems like the type who will enjoy the extra attention of playing in a real market, but then again, FNS.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 11, 2010 10:43 AM CST reply actions

I suppose

But, it’s only one HR over his career high, and it’s age 28 year, in a hitting friendly park now in a better line up. It doesn’t seem that absurd to think he could hit 19. Kaufmann is one of the hardest places to hit a homerun, the cell one of the easiest.
And 14 SBs is only one more then his career high too, and with Ozzie, adding 6 steals from last year doesn’t seem ridiculous.

In Canada, Ireland, and Australia the terms Grad or Formal are most commonly used and the event is usually held for those graduating high school or middle school. In Ireland, the event is also known as the Debs, which is derived from Debutante

Well, technically...

The romans ended up too busy boning each other indiscriminately to fight back. The huns only showed up because a roman scouting party tried to make out with the hun border guards.

If you’re going to judge people or insult them, you can at least own up to it in public. See: me getting roasted for my views on Donte Stallworth or the kid who quit baseball to become a priest. Man up.
