Mitchell tears tendon, will undergo surgery:

Hopefully he’ll recover fast enough that he’ll be resume baseball activities in 6-8 weeks or so, but I’m guessing based on personal experience…

Not sure if this link will show up as it’s my first try…

Sounds like best case scenario is getting back on the field around the ASB

or when he should have been getting his promotion to AA… probably sets his development back a level, looking at maybe beginning the year at AA next year, instead of maybe being pushed to AAA, replacing the finally-proven-useless Pierre mid-season next year…

i wouldn't have said that.

he was on the DL last year but i don’t recall problems in college.

Is this the same injury Peavy had last year?

Damn it, I was afraid he’d need surgery. Hope this teaches him to be careful around the wall. Don’t need a guy going hell-bent all the time, though he is a football player.

juan pierre has swung at two 3-0 pitches in his career.

once in 2001, once in 2007. (one was a single, one was an out)
he has seen 233 3-0 counts in his career. that is a swing rate on 3-0 of .85%
ryan howard, in about half as many plate appearances (3145 vs 6064), has seen 232 3-0 counts and has swung 43 times. that is a rate of 18.5% (he put 16 of those 43 in play resulting in 9 hits.(5 doubles, 3 singles and one home run. (OPS of 2.017!)))

additionally, after juan pierre reaches a 3-0 count, his resulting batting line is .439/.798/.537.
howard’s line after 3-0 is .375/.866/.771.

how’s that for a distraction?

it’s funny that after the count reached 3-0, juan pierre has a higher OBP than frank did.

Actually, that's very interesting.

The knock by some on Frank is that he wasn’t agressive enough, took too many walks. Maybe that’s not true?
Question:
Does your source consider that some of those 3-0 counts were part of IBBs?
And I’m sure many were of the semi variety.

"April showers bring May flowers and May flowers bring mathematical elimination day to Kansas City".--- Joe Pos

by Chiburb on Mar 12, 2010 7:40 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

i think it does include intentional walks.

so, of the 538 times frank’s plate appearance ended on the 4th pitch we have:

429 times it was ball 4. (154 of those listed as intentional)
39 times he got a hit. (11 were home runs)
68 times he made an out.
1 time he hit a sacrifice fly.
1 time he was hit by the pitch.

it’s interesting that of his 121 sacrifice flies and his 87 HBPs in his career, only 1 of each came on a 3-0 count. (and also, that one sac fly and that one HBP were the only one of each that he had in any plate appearance where the count reached 3-0)

and of course my source is this page at baseball-reference

This hurts a lot
No. 1 draft pick Jared Mitchell will undergo surgery on his left ankle next week and could miss what would have been his first full professional season after colliding with the wall while making a catch against the Angels.

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/03/sox-prospect-to-have-surgery-could-miss-season.html

by Sox-35th on Mar 13, 2010 7:43 AM CST reply actions

If it is similar to Peavy's, or Schilling's, injury

it could be 3-4 months. Might take him through July/August. Too soon to tell.

Jim Leyritz- Didn’t like him as a player and then he killed that broad driving drunk.

by winningugly on Mar 13, 2010 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

peavy wasn't out that long.

my point is that i can’t figure out why mitchell’s injury would cause him to miss the whole season (or “a year”, in ozzie’s words) unless there is something they are not telling about the injury.

by larry on Mar 13, 2010 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing that the "could miss a season" stuff is due to Ozzie saying "a year"

And that Ozzie saying “a year” was not an informed medical opinion. Which isn’t to say the injury might not be that bad, but I don’t think that anyone really knows yet.

by hitlesswonder on Mar 13, 2010 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

Any ankle surgery sucks, especially for a speed guy.

Thank God it wasn’t Ventura’ed.

Jim Leyritz- Didn’t like him as a player and then he killed that broad driving drunk.

by winningugly on Mar 13, 2010 9:27 AM CST up reply actions

I'm going by this initial assessment if Peavy:
The tendon, which is fairly lengthy, runs behind the inside of the ankle and attaches to the navicular bone. Its function is so critical because it helps control position of the midfoot, which essentially controls the arch. You also use that muscle during push-off of the foot. As a right-handed thrower (and this is his right foot that is injured), the pain he has been experiencing as weight is transferred through the foot during his pitching motion has no doubt contributed to his less than ace-like performance in the starts since the initial injury. He has been heavily wrapped, but obviously is still struggling, and even the presence of a heavy wrap itself can alter an athlete’s function as it limits foot motion."

As for the prognosis, Stephania says it all depends on how well the tendon heals while Peavy is in the solid cast. “The best case scenario is they see evidence of tissue healing when they re-examine him. He progresses to a walking boot (where he can also resume direct therapy), then a normal shoe, then resumes baseball activity gradually; that’s the 8-12 weeks (i.e., maybe September). The worst case scenario is if the tendon does not repair itself and ends up requiring some sort of surgical intervention. The time frame would need to be re-evaluated at that point, but it would be clearly season-ending.”

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/baseball/flb/outOfTheBox?page=ootb090614

So perhaps Ozzie’s lack of optimism might, after all, not be misplaced.

Right, I'm just saying that Ozzie doesn't actually know it will cost him a year

No one does yet. Who knows what they see in surgery and then, as you article points out, the healing process is up in the air as well. I’m sure the Sox will be very conservative with him, so you would guess it will be a long time out even if it’s not a full season. But we’ll just have to wait and see.

Jim Leyritz- Didn’t like him as a player and then he killed that broad driving drunk.

by winningugly on Mar 13, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

the question she was answering.

it was not when will peavy be pitching again, it was when will peavy be pitching again in the major leagues. rather important difference, particularly in the case of a pitcher.

and i don’t know what you mean by “peavy was july”. his return was august 13.

by larry on Mar 13, 2010 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

I was mistaken even on my premise

of when he went down, not when he returned. Though he went down in July – looks to have been June. 2 months. So never mind.

I also don’t know if the push-off foot injury is more of an issue than lateral movement of a CF/speed guy, or someone who plays every 5th day vs.daily.

Jim Leyritz- Didn’t like him as a player and then he killed that broad driving drunk.

by winningugly on Mar 13, 2010 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

the injuries are rather different.

peavy had a partial tear, no surgery. mitchell has a rupture and will need surgery. i also suspect there’s not just tendon damage but ligament damage, as well.

by larry on Mar 13, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Which was the point:
The worst case scenario is if the tendon does not repair itself and ends up requiring some sort of surgical intervention. The time frame would need to be re-evaluated at that point, but it would be clearly season-ending."

Which is why I said Ozzie might not be as ill-informed as thought.

by winningugly on Mar 13, 2010 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

well, again, different question.

injury in june, with a reassessment in say july and then a surgery would certainly be season ending. injury in mid-march with immediate surgery doesn’t seem season-ending to me.
