What Happen in Vegas...

The White Sox already played one game today.

  • Jake Peavy made his cactus league debut, pitching well
  • Bobby Jenks got shelled in his inning of work, is still fat.
  • Jared Mitchell made a great catch to rob a HR, but ended up getting carted off the field for his efforts.
The Sox play two with the Cubs this weekend in Vegas. Both on CSN, tonight with the Cubs broadcast team and tomorrow afternoon with the Sox crew.

i'd suggest it.

just did it over the weekend. quite fun. not as “tense” as during the regular season (more families, less meatheads of either stripe). cashman field is a pretty nice place to catch a game, at least before the vegas weather turns to ass.

though i think next year i’m going to bring my knights cap, since that’s apparently who gets to make the trip up from arizona.

These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

Not feeling too confident in Bobby

He knew he had to come to camp in shape and ready to go. Its just one game and its spring training, but this coupled with the “I couldn’t find anyone to catch” is obviously not good.

Frankly I also find the “I quit drinking” shit kinda suspicious. Good for him, but I can’t help think that maybe (and this is a big maybe) its because he spent a large majority of the summer drinking and then realized that it was too late to get in shape?

by 815Sox on Mar 12, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

I just do not understand how the guy could not find someone to catch for him

He stayed in Chicago, he couldn’t get his fat ass down to Lisle to go to Bulls Sox Academy? Shit, if he would have told the team I’m sure they would have provided him with one.

Time will tell with Bobby… but if he is bad it will effect us much more this year with our diminished offense.

by larry on Mar 12, 2010 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think your doubt is misplaced in this case

Quiting drinking beer and changing your diet can do a lot, especially for a big guy. It doesn’t mean he didn’t get some sort of exercise that is easier on the body (swimming), but I think you’re underestimating the benefits of a good diet, especially when coming from a very bad one.

by paul_ on Mar 12, 2010 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

i'm not.

i’m saying it wasn’t just diet. he was obviously exercising. you know, what 815 and I were talking about.

by larry on Mar 13, 2010 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

A calf injury is a mother.

Maggs has one, as did Q, IIRC. Takes a long time to heal properly since the muscle is so dense. He may be hurting most of the year if he doesn’t give it time to heal.

Becks has to work his magic. Herm can’t do much.

I Hate the Cubs announcers...

They are so damn painful to listen to. One of the big reasons I have trouble watching Cubs games.

Lenny: “Pierre with a good bunt, but Soto pounces on it and makes a good throw…”

You know, it’s not a good bunt for a hit when the catcher fields it 5 feet in front of home plate. At least Bob is out with this game so I don’t to put up with captain obvious.

Comparatively, I’m so happy we have Hawk and Stoney…

by paul_ on Mar 12, 2010 10:15 PM CST reply actions

I'm wallowing in the cognitive dissonance being presented here

We’re talking about the huge impact of moving from an impact closer to a lesser guy in a division that will be decided by “1 or 2 games” by “2 or 3 teams”

Yet DvD doesn’t make the connection to going without a real DH, AND letting said DH option sign with the other two teams in the division.

Doing some meet-up 5/21? Don’t give me any family BS, either. My wife informed me our trip to Philly this spring to see her niece’s Bat Mitzvah is 5/21. She knows where I’ll be then, and is quite cool with it.

So you’d better get your ass to The Cell 5/21.

I’ve already emailed HSA. I’m in for 5/21.

Everyone get ready to meet the real, in life person known as BSS. Kind of a mix between a young Jack Nicholson, white Tiger Woods and a littler more sober and thin Artie Lange.

And one final question. New White Sox outfielder Juan Pierre has worn #9 his entire career. He’s wearing #1 for the White Sox — #9 is retired for Minnie Minoso. Isn’t it a White Sox tradition this year to unretire numbers? Why didn’t they ask Minnie? He’s still around — in fact, he lives within walking distance of Wrigley Field.
