Heyman:
• Sergio Santos, a converted shortstop who’s pitching well for the White Sox, is very likely to make their staff as a reliever, as he is out of options. He throws in the high 90s and has an excellent corkscrew changeup, according to pitching coach Don Cooper. White Sox farm director Buddy Bell gave him the chance to become a pitcher a year ago after he didn’t hit enough to play shortstop. He still had the bug to hit and was traded to the Giants last spring, but after he didn’t make it there as a shortstop either, he returned to the White Sox

So maybe KW does make lemonade out of draft lemons:
For those who are interested, I have made a Google Doc where you can view the 2007 and 2008 No Turnover Standings as well. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that the 2007 No Turnover Mariners would have gone 118-44. It was also pretty interesting to see the 2007 No Turnover Reds go 49-113, and the 2008 No Turnover White Sox lose 100 games despite the fact that the real 2008 White Sox won their division.

Quick Santos question:

I know he is out-of-options but isn’t he not a great fit for the 12th pitching spot in the sense that the 12th pitcher should ideally be a long reliever? And Santos seems to be a 1 or 2 inning guy?

Seems like Jenks could easily start the season on the DL and then Aquino/Santos head north…..

i'm down with him

he believes in milton:

So when Milton says that he was called a "derogatory comment". I believe him. When he says his family was threatened, I believe him. Every fan isn’t a racist, just like every fan doesn’t spit on players. But based on my experience at Wrigley, I believe him.

I don't know why so many

Are acting like its absolutely absurd that some bleacher bum fratboy would yell racist shit at milton. Sure the letters from inside the organization may be pushing it… but its the same fanbase that poured a beer over Victorino while he was trying to catch the ball

by 815Sox on Mar 16, 2010 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I agree.

I believe Milton when he says he was called some disgusting, vile, racist insults.

I also believe that a) he knew Wrigley’s rep when he signed that deal and b) he didn’t really care — maybe he did, but it was obscured by the chance to play for a winning club and make some nice coin doing it.

Milton is a guy that’s too smart for his own good — throw in some anger and paranoia issues and it combines into a volatile but compelling personality.

Just don’t bring him to the South Side please.

by madvillian on Mar 16, 2010 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Why not?

For what the Mariners are paying him, I’d take him. Much rather have MB then Mark Kotsay, Vizquel, Nix or Lillibridge. So what if he misses 40 games, his 120 he plays will be more productive then any of those guys.

I’m tired of hearing from Cubs fans how they had a bad season b/c of Milton Bradley. They had a bad season because they had a lot of injuries and Soto pulled an Andruw Jones. MB had a pretty mediocre season, but he still got on base at a high rate, and I imagine if the fans treated him better he might have turned it around. They knew he was a headcase, treating him like shit surely wasn’t going to make it better.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Are they similar guys at all?

I’d compare him to Orlando Cabrera or Frank Thomas, if I was going to compare him to a former White Sox player. Obviously those guys are both gone too, but I’m not saying what KW would do. I’m saying what I would want.

I don’t get the risk thing once his salary becomes a non-issue as it did. You can just cut him if he’s a jackass. A lot of people didn’t like AJ either, but he’s doing just fine here. It’s a very different atmosphere at the cell then it is at Wrigley. I have no reason to believe he wouldn’t put up the numbers he annually does playing here, which would be a great improvement over a lot of the guys here.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

i agree with you, and we are probably in the minority here who wouldn't mind milton being given a shot

but he has legitimate injury risk issues, which probably prevented kdub from signing him in the past

by onlysoxfaninbasel on Mar 16, 2010 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Injuries are not as large of a risk for the sox

So here, or someplace with a top flight medical staff, aren’t acquiring as much risk with MB as other clubs.

the Cubs got possibly the worst contract in baseball for him

So that shows the level of interest around the league on this malcontent.

I’m about as firm as skeptic as it gets on the role of chemistry for good or bad on a club, but I’m willing to make an exception in Bradley’s case. Unless he plays in a vacuum, his issues really do seem to affect his on field play (which affects his team), and there is a very real chance he’ll miss 40 games with injuries, in fact it’s almost certain. And to boot he’s not even that good of a player.

At this point he’s a DH type with limited power and in a good year he’ll give a 290/370/420 type line (granted, with some upside on that ISO and BA), which is good, but not worth the hassle IMO, especially given he is almost always either injured, suspended, or causing a firestorm.

by madvillian on Mar 16, 2010 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

If his play was affected

I can’t imagine what he’d do in a good mood. He’s still doing better then the guys we have would be expected to do. So if his bad play, which is still good, is hurting the team, what is Mark Kotsay’s play doing? I’m surprised the guys even show up to play. Mark Kotsay is likely to miss 40 games too and his power is more limited, so I don’t know what the difference is there either.

Fuck chemistry. If MB was able to ruin a team, which he didn’t, then the team wasn’t going to win to begin with. Give me the most talented 25 guys, even if they hate each other and I’m going to win.

.290/.370/.420 is still better than what we have.
Not to mention, you know what I think is a hassle? Outs. Outs are a hassle. Mark Kotsay and Andruw Jones bring a hell of a lot of those to the table.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing that he isn't an upgrade over what we have

I wanted them to sign Thome or Damon, thought it was a no-brainer in fact.

Point is though, he’s not enough of an upgrade to make it worthwhile IMO. He’s a good player, but there is a reason he has been passed around like a basket of rolls during a dinner at the Corleone residence.

by madvillian on Mar 16, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree

I think that he could be dog fighting in his off-time while punching teammates and random fans in the middle of games and the difference in talent between Bradley and Kotsay would still be worth it.

Also, Kotsay has played for four teams since the start of 2007, 6 total in his career. Bradley has played for four teams since the start of 2007, 7 total in his career. So not only is Kotsay not a good player, but he’s played for just as many teams recently as Bradley has.

Clearly it comes down to the fact that we just value Bradley, Kotsay and how much chemistry matters differently, so we should just move on though.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

A. That's hilarious

B. Chemistry does count for something. The Yankees assemble the best talent all the time but most of their recent star-studded teams have failed to click, became dysfunctional and missed the palyoffs. You still can’t win without talent, and media, especially announcers love to overhype chemistry, but it does play a role.

Winning cures all

Who knows how much they are actually liked? If the rest of the Cubs had shown up to play last year, would anyone have said anything about Milton Bradley? When you are winning a world series I don’t think it’s very hard to get along.

Look at Nick Swisher, clubhouse cancer when he left the Sox, but great guy with the Yankees when they win a world series.

These strong personalities come off a lot worse when the team doesn’t win.

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

this is why spending time on chemistry is a waste.

i do not doubt that there are circumstances – milton bradley likely being exhibit a – where it’s a factor that should be considered and considered heavily because they’re simply a cancer. but who the fuck knows what’s going to happen when you put 25+ guys together for 8 months. worry about talent. at least you have a better chance of getting what you paid for.

i don't think the cubs getting the worst contract in baseball for him

is proof that there was not interest in him. The way the the Cubs organization handled the last few weeks of the season, and talking about how they were going to get rid of him no matter what was going to drive his value straight into the ground. Not to mention that the MB contract was pretty bad to begin with.
The Mariners jumped on the chance to unload an awful contract. If Hendry hadn’t gone on a tear against MB before trading him, they probably could have received a greater return.

bird law in this country is not ruled by reason

by soxshenanigans on Mar 16, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

This.

The Cubs made him less valuable by over paying him and treating like a piece of hot garbage. They put themselves in a bad position. Had they done a better job of handling the situation they wouldn’t have Carlos Silva trying to make the team right now.

Not to mention he’s a DH, injury prony and overpaid (by a ton in this market), only a couple teams needed a DH that could afford him or had a bad contract to match to make his salary a non-issue. His personality probably matters to some, but these other factors had just as much to do with it.

The greatest guy on earth, who happens to be a DH, only got 1.5 million. The market just isn’t there for DH’s. Particularly injury prone DH’s getting paid 10 million dollars.

His personality was probably a factor, but that’s not why they had to take Carlos Silva back.

I have not been able to watch

Much of spring training. What does Teahen look like up at the plate? I realize his numbers are not good, but it’s obviously a small sample size, something like 20 ABs at this point? Has he been hitting the ball hard at least or is it just awful?

by Grinder in Training on Mar 16, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Ozzie is staring at the panic button

So sez MLB.com

“I’m starting to worry a little bit about Teahen,” Guillen said. “I see the same swing. He’s not getting anything going for himself. He has to work to try to get better. He’s going to get more at-bats. Right now, he’s struggling at the plate.”

by 67WMAQ on Mar 16, 2010 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Small sample size, indeed.

Teahen has 19 AB. I’m ging out on limb and saying that he’ll project out for the season closer to the SSS community projection (minus Cheat adjustment) instead of batting .105 for the season. But clearly De Aza will end the regular season betting .462. His 26 AB do not constitute a small sample size.

Its funny you posted this because

mentally I had already started doing a tally in my head. Of course its difficult to take anything away from spring training (cough Brian Anderson) but Andruw Jones looks good. I mean like healthy good. That swing on Greinke last night was encouraging.

my philosophy on spring

I say this every year, but really spring stats don’t matter.

Guys are looking to work on their new stance or their new pitch or their new ability to see breaking pitches…

For these guys that are assured a roster spot throw the stats out the window.

Only stats I would sorta pay attention to are guys coming back from injuries (throw Jones in there) and young players with a chance to make the team. Seeings how the Sox have only a handful of guys (if even that) that qualify for one of those two cases I can confidently say I won’t pay lose any sleep over the Sox’ spring record or guys’ stats.

I also didn't realize BP had moved the team up to 84 wins

and a tie for 1st. Preseason division title here we come!

What happens when they change the W/L totals?

are they just using different allocations of playing time — i.e., instead of 150 IP for Peavy, they give him a boost and say he reaches 175?

Mainly.

But they also have done some tweaking to PECOTA. I know they called in Nate to help. PT goes both ways – Nathan down.

yeah figured it might be too much,

but slow day, nothing going on, figured it wouldn’t hurt

eh, this happens every year around this time

but if we don’t put it all in one place, when it does get busier it will just muck things up.

I'm betting Reynolds and Rollins disappoint this year.

You can aslo do way better off the waiver wire than your current bench of Hawpe and Pierre. See if Kyle Blanks is out there. He is owned in only five percent of Yahoo leagues and he’s going to be great, keeper great.

Naw

I wouldn’t worry about Rollins. He had a bad half (where or where is Dils????) His 2nd half fell right back in line with normal nunmbers. He’ll steal less but hit more homers.

Reynolds on the other hand I can see.

He simply won’t keep up the 28% hr/f rate and if he doesn’t with how often he makes contact look out.

Rollins is more of a hunch, but Reynolds I placed on my don't pick up list.

Of course, I ended up with Adrian Beltre at 3B because I waited too long on that position so I might not be the best advisor. Then again, he is due for a comeback and the green monster does wonders for a player’s career.
