Mark Teahen Community Projection Results
As of this writing, Mark Teahen has hit .150/.190/.150 this spring. But never fear, Sox fans, he's got 3 years to work with Greg Walker to right the ship.
And from the looks of our community projection (once I edited out the few .700+ SLG), you don't think Walker will have enough time to inflict too much damage on Teahen in year one.

Whats the point in predicting anything?
It just gives us something to talk about when the actual games aren’t being played. But I’m not complaining, this is a well put together collection of stats Cheat’s been working on.

perhaps you'll note that the things people were asked to predict were largely under teahen's control.
unlike rbi.
this is still a jack off exercise
might as well jack off with rbis too

How are RBIs NOT under his control?
If the bat is in his hand when there are men are on base, he needs to learn how to cinch it up and hunker down! It is completely under his control.

rbi
rbi is under control to some extent of the hitter. clutch hitting could be a category in itself. some players hti better with RISP than without. not sure about Teahan but the point is it is under his control somewhat.

I still think this is too optimistic.
BTW, Jim Bowden says the Sox wil be a “bridesmaid” this year:

i'd rather take the over on the 95% than the under on the community projection
and i bet i’m not the only one who would agree that his wOBA would fall somewhere between .310 and .340. so the 5% correction is probably more like his 33% percentile or something.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
This piece taught me that Jim Bowden can read the internet for five minutes
At least he didn’t say Juan Pierre will be playing center field.
But how about that non-existent bullpen battle?
Lets sure hope he was indeed "joking".
The defense part? “Way better than last year,” Guillen said. “We were so bad defensively that I had the (designated hitter) making errors,” Guillen joked.
2010 WhiteSox Baseball: "even if it works it's still stupid"
I was worried about Teahen.
But then you mention Greg Walker having 3 years to work with him. Now I feel all warm and fuzzy again.
if the mean - 5 std is an accurate prediction
then teahan will be ranked among the lowest in WAR for starting 3B, right?
by onlysoxfaninbasel on Mar 17, 2010 5:00 AM CDT reply actions
he'd probably end up platooning plenty with Nix and Vizquel if that's the case
he’d still be more than .5/150 WAR though!
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
A thought on Greg Walker
Maybe he’s a victim of bad PR? Instead of speaking in cliches (and I understand why people do it), he would be much better off if he outlined his success stories.
I would be willing to bet that his success/failure rate is similar to Don Cooper.
Thome and Dye, for starters
The White Sox added a couple of years to their careers. The training staff is a part of that, but they must have gotten some advice from Walk.
Walker would serve himself well, if he came out while someone was really kicking ass at the plate, and said “this is happening because I corrected mechanical flaws and did x, y, and z.”
He did dig his himself into a hole with several years worth of excuses, justifications, and rationalizations. He would help himself if he took credt for someone’s success, instead of looking lost when someone fails.
We all know Coop’s successes: John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Matt Thornton, Bobby Jenks. But it overshadows the failures of Contreras, Colon, Sisco, Aardsma, 2006 Politte, 2006 Cotts, MacDougal, and Linebrink.
i agree that walk should change up his communication with the media
but for thome and dye, are you attributing walk’s contributions to quotes from either of those players?
by onlysoxfaninbasel on Mar 17, 2010 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions
Thome, 2007
Granted, this was right after the 500th home run. But…
“There were so many things Charlie (Manuel) and I worked on [in the Cleveland organization],” Thome said. “He helped me learn to pull the ball, opening up [my stance], squaring back to stay on the ball … countless things. Same thing with [Walker]. Walk reminds me of Charlie in that way. He’s very, very positive.”
sure, walk told thome to stick to the fundamentals and he'll be fine :)

A look through the Tribune archives didn't help my case. At all.
Especially with quotes like this. Here’s Walker talking about Joe Crede’s surge at the end of 2005:
“He found out on his own, which is good instead of having the hitting coach do that,” hitting coach Greg Walker said. "He changed the lower half [of his swing] and got his bat on a level swing plane. That’s when he took off. He always had superior talent, but that one swing flaw was beating him.
The Lord helps hitters who help themselves.
Big difference in those names.
Cooper’s success stories: young pitchers previously considered busts before changing their approach/mechanics and now enjoying successful careers. It’s not like Dye and Thome were suffering before playing here. He has team support, so I suppose he does something right.
by Ozzie Montana on Mar 17, 2010 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions
that argument is thin. very thin.

by MarketMaker on Mar 17, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions
It's really tough to find any Walker successes
Thome doesn’t count — and Dye always had the talent, just needed the health (though I’d cede some credit to Walk)
Konerko is huge Walk supporter, so you have to put him in that camp.
But the biggest successes, like Crede late ’05 into ’06 or Quentin ’08, were both self-taught, seemingly without the input of Walk…
And unless you count Beckham there hasn’t really been a guy who came up from the minors and had immediate success either, though that’s admittedly an organizational issue.

The Trib archives didn't have much
Any praise for Walk came from the coaching staff.
If the players had nice things to say about him, it was about his positive, hands off nature.
becks did have a hitch on his swing in college though
and fixed it in the AFL, was it walk who did that?

comparing Don Cooper to Greg Walker is like comparing a pristine vintage bottle of wine to a half drunk can of Busch Light found in the corner of Cork and Kerry from last year’s St. Patricks day with 11 smoked Winston’s floating in it.

i think you're right to some degree
but only because i don’t think hitting coaches do much anyway. they all seem to have 1-2 guys they work really well with and the rest are a bad student/teacher match or something. so if Walker’s here because Paulie likes him/thinks he’s necessary, that works for me.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.

It was the late 90s, I was in my early 20s, living in Clearwater, FL, single and the apocalypse was on its way in 2000. Like you wouldnt have been partying your ass off.
That was a great gig, actually. We were rehabbing a bunch of apartments down there. Free rent. 100% disposable income. Once we took a long drunk lunch at the original Hooters, returned a few hours later to find the fire dept. and news vans there. It seems white torching down the roof someone left something smoldering. Good times.
It will not get much better than 2000.

Rick Hahn has been considered for several general managerial openings, and his credentials were recognized by one major baseball publication.
Baseball America magazine has selected Hahn as Major League Baseball’s top assistant GM, two sources confirmed. Hahn is entering his 10th season with the White Sox and has been credited with giving the organization cost certainty with multi-year deals to several players.
Hahn has interviewed for GM openings in St. Louis and Pittsburgh in recent years but later withdrew from consideration. Seattle also was denied permission to interview Hahn for its GM opening after the 2008 season, fueling speculation that he would take over if Ken Williams is promoted to team president in the future.

Rad. I forgot about that.
Do we have royal lines now for GM roles? Should we be demanding a free and open GM election with term limits?
I’ve never been a fan of monarchy…
I have always hoped that is the reason he has withdrawn
I would love for Hahn to take over next.

probably comes out to about 145 games. that sounds about right. particularly since it seems like teahen will be batting 8th.
