Carlos Quentin Community Projection
The results of the Gordon Beckham projection made me think he might be projected as the Sox most valuable player (read: hitter) when you factor in defense and positional adjustments. The only player who can might be able to eclipse him would have to be Carlos Quentin.
But...
Can Quentin stay healthy? Can he revisit his '08 numbers, or was that just a fluke?

My calculations look off if you only use the stats here
But I’m also factoring another 25 times on base via HBP and IBB…

I was thinking that, but B-R counts them separately. That's true, though.
Ah well, if he plays as much as I’ve projected him for he’ll probably get 25 HBP anyway.

oftentimes HBP are also counted as BB
for simplicity’s sake in these kinds of things.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
In Quentin's case, there's an important difference.
He’s prone to get .040 extra OBP points on HBP alone.

which is exactly why you can just figure HBP as BB in this case
we know he has a repeatable skill there.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
But I don't think he'll walk that many times.
Then people will think I think he’ll walk that many times and then also get HBP 20-25 times and his OBP will be enormous. And I’m so not OK with that.

just to clarify
that isn’t a reason not to do them. we just need to adjust them heavily, in the neighborhood of Comm Avg – 1 SD, to get a true over/under type projection.
i think that also means that we can also interpret our numbers as ~70th percentile projections.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
Thus far, my glass is half full (for now)
If starting pitching holds up (Freddy?), “hitters” actually hit (Quentin? Rios?), the stars align, blah, blah, blah – the Sox chances of taking their division is not terrible.
However, one glaring problem annoys me like a case of the gout…and his name is Scott Linebrink.
How did Kenny get duped into acquiring this guy? He’s getting $10.5 million over the next 2 seasons and can’t be traded. You don’t like to play him, but you can’t bench him completely. Nearly every time he takes the bump bad things happen. Faced with the realization that we have to endure this guy through next year gives me an ulcer. Luckily, a little MGD will put out that fire.

However, he picked Peavy as the pitcher and posts so little he may not be here to claim his prize if he were to be picked winner. Myself and Tdogg should be pretty close assuming Kotsay and Rios start over Jones.

hey rj, stay out of white sox business.
Presumably the White Sox staff thinks of him as an above replacement level arm, and for all we know, he could be. But the accelerated time table and lack of experience makes me suspect this just isn’t the case and that Chicago might make their roster worse by carrying Santos.

I heard yesterday afternoon that there were a hand full of scouts from other teams,
hoping that the Sox release him. There is no way he was making it through waivers is what I heard. Santos’s story is one that if he can have an even mediocre season, Sox fans will latch onto him. I hope he does well, he’s a fun player to keep an eye on.
1 more week, just one more painfull week!
Seriously.. its the last reliever
It’s not like he’s going to be put in a tie game in the ninth inning right off the bat. If he is terrible, it will be in low leverage situations, and he’ll be gone before he can ever hurt the team. No reason to risk losing the guy through waivers when the other options are nothing special.

Yeah, it must be a reeeaaally slow news day
when you’re reviewing the 12th man of a pitching staff.
Maybe he’ll review the William Hung CD next.

"[team] might make their roster worse by carrying [12th pitcher]."
you could write this same post for just about any team, it’s just slightly more interesting here because santos is a recently converted position player.
Why are people complaining about this getting coverage?
Aren’t we White Sox Fans? Aren’t we supposed to be complaining about not getting enough coverage?
why do we care about coverage.
in any event, can’t say i’ve noticed a lack of coverage of the white sox.
I was referring to the usual griping about Cubs getting more coverage
2nd team in the 2nd city and all that
They can cover the fact that the Cubs have sucked for 102 years...hah!
