Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

If Theo Epstein is looking to snag Gonzalez from the West Coast, then he might have to surrender Westmoreland and a B-level pitcher (like, say, Michael Bowden, Stolmy Pimentel or Junichi Tazawa). That's somewhat over the $27 million value, but in the same ballpark. Or, perhaps a package led by Kelly and Reddick.

Update: this is assuming Gonzalez would play the field. If he's a DH, then he's about a 3 WAR player.

Clearly, a club intent on getting Gonzalez will need plenty of ammo in the form of young, cost-controlled talent.

IOW Kenny's got the requisite bullets

I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.

so hudson ($12.1M) plus mitchell/flowers ($14.2M) and a throw-in gets it done

according to this? that’s much more palatable than the ridiculous beckham, danks/floyd, hudson, flowers package that’s been thrown around.

seems a little light, though, considering the cardinals gave up about $25 million in surplus value for holliday and got very little surplus value in return. plus, although two B/B+ prospects are technically equal to one top prospect and some filler in the HBT calculations, the package that includes the single best overall prospect might be more appealing.

it’s interesting to think a deal could be possible without completely gutting the team, but isn’t the prevailing logic that it’s much cheaper/easier to find a productive 1B than it would be to replace a mid-rotation starter, power hitting catcher, or decent centerfielder? all depends on how much you believe in the prospects, i guess.

honestly

1b is the last position I’d gut my system for. I’d let Flowers go but I wouldn’t be crazy about it.

"all depends on how much you believe in the prospects, i guess."

that’s been the question from the beginning for kenny. if they make it with the club past May, that’s probably a pretty big vote of confidence.

I believe you are being blashpemous yourself when talking about Mitchell like this.

I am thy lord Beckham. Thou shalt have no other future of the franchise players before me.

I firmly believe Jesus was a Negro.

Thus, Mitchell is the True Second Coming.
