So, We've all now seen the quote from Ozzie about about daring to question his decision to have Beckham bunt. Here is Ozzie from Friday afternoon-
"Well, don't watch it," he said. "That's easy, man. If you don't want to watch the way I'm managing this club, it's easy, be a Cub fan or talk about something else. I'm not going to tell people why I do stuff, what I did. They talk about taking the bat away from Beckham, that's the seventh and ninth innings and I've got my best two hitters, the only guys swinging the bat well right now, right behind him. All those idiots out there they think about baseball, come out here and manage. I don't have to explain to anybody why I do stuff."
It reminded me of last year, when he got into it a bit with Lou from across the way. When Pinella pointed out the Sox attendance woes, Ozzie replied -
"Because our fans are not stupid like Cubs fans. They know we’re shit. Cubs fans will watch any game at Wrigley, because Wrigley is just a bar."
Basically, Ozzie admitted that Sox fans won't show up if he isn't making it worth our while to show up. This is pretty much correct. I am a whole lot less likely to to take my very limited budgeted entertainment dollars to the Cell if I'm feeling that there isn't even a 50/50 chance that it will be a winner. With that in mind-
Dear Ozzie,
Here is the thing. The Sox get a lot of revenue from other sources... but getting people in the seats is still pretty big. $68 million worth of revenue big.
SO START GIVING A SHIT. This "I'm a cocky fuck and that's because I know more than anyone else" shit isn't going to fly with me this year if the last three games are an indication of what the product on the field is going to be. The 2005 gravy train is over. You are being held accountable again.
You want me to NOT watch if I'm going to question you? That is NOT likely to happen. Much like most others here, I'm with the team all the way. What might happen if you keep this up- I will not be heading off to the Cell on a whim the way I used to if this is the attitude you are going to have about me being there and actually paying attention to how you manage the team, if you are managing them to lose.
Now, the bean counters in the organization have already offered a half off promotion for the Saturday Twins game. Not a good sign for what is your first weekend home game of the season. Keep your attitude and keep losing, and you will keep pushing us away. The bean counters will notice... and in the end, Jerry isn't doing this for charity.
Sincerely,
SSE
