It's an old baseball idiom that catchers make the best managers, and after five years of watching A.J. play and manipulate the game of baseball better than anyone, I have been thinking all season that I would love to see A.J. manage the White Sox some day. Granted, a few people have picked up that I'm not Ozzie Guillen's greatest fan so it is only natural that I would spend time thinking of who I would rather have manage. I want A.J.
I know it would still be quite a few years off and it is likely he won't even be playing for us next year (hope that doesn't play out) but I want a manager who knows every rule of MLB and how (when) to tweak it. He's incredibly good at working with pitchers and calling games unless the Sox pitchers have been lying in all their interviews the past few years, he is a natural at promoting and he is universally hated by most of the rest of baseball. I kind of like when the White Sox play the bad guy. For wrestling fans, he would be like the White Sox Bobby Heenan.
Plenty of talking heads tout Ozzie's real value as manager being his ability to draw heat away from his players and onto himself. Well A.J. would do that even better and probably not be egotistical/stupid enough to model the offense after his own sub-par offensive style.
I also like to think A.J. would never put a line-up together that had career nine-hole hitters leading off, featured sink-hole OBPs right after the three and four hitters, put all of our rotten eggs in one line-up each Sunday, but that could just be me.
I am starting my campaign. Keep A.J. until he can't play, then give him the manager's seat.
