This Week in White Sox Minor League Baseball

Miguel Gonzalez

This week:

  • Daniel Hudson is still pretty good.  His season debut for the Knights came at Norfolk, where he attended college at Old Dominion, but he didn't have any trouble: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 9 K.  The top prospect is ready to step in whenever his services become required.
  • OF Trayce Thompson, 2009 second round pick, has been assigned to Kannapolis from extended spring training.  The 19 year old is still very raw and struggled in Rookie Ball stops at Bristol and Great Falls last year (.198/.265/.245) so full season ball should be quite the challenge.
  • The puzzling Santo Luis era has ended.  After spending a year and a half on the 40 man roster, the righty reliever was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox.
  • Catchers of the Future Update: Tyler Flowers .346/.414/.577; Josh Phegley: .259/.310/.296 (placed on DL on 4/15); Miguel Gonzalez .160/.160/.200.
  • This is a couple weeks old but erik looks at what are the minimum batting requirements for the system’s top hitting prospects to be a standard, everyday big leaguer.
  • Has Eduardo Escobar finally turned the corner? Kevin Goldstein says, according to one scout, the well-gloved but tiny Venezuelan shortstop "just looked more physical." Color me skeptical.  His early numbers for the Dash: .278/.308/.389.
  • Jordan Danks: .257/.381/.543.
  • Nate Jones and Jhonny Nunez are both transitioning back to starting roles after spending the majority of the last couple years relieving.  Thus far, the results have been favorable for both.  Jones for the Dash: 2 GS, 9.2 IP, 12 H, 3 BB, 12 K.  Nunez for the Barons: 2 GS, 10 IP, 11 H, 3 BB, 9 K.
  • Kyle Bellamy, the side-arming righty reliever who many have pegged as a fast-riser, was assigned to Kannapolis to start the season - which raised a few eyebrows.  However, the organization appears to have quickly remedied this by promoting him to Winston-Salem.  In 4 games with the Intimidators: 5 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K.
  • C.J. Retherford: .367/.441/.600.
