Here Comes Your White Sox Minor League Update
During the minor league offseason, I profiled who I felt were disappointing White Sox prospects from 2009. That doesn't mean these players should necessarily have been written off as lost causes, as I said: "it's likely that at least one of those mentioned will recover in 2010 and continue onwards and upwards." So which one will it be?

I voted for Gregory Infante
But then realized that going from mediocre starter to good reliever is more of a lateral move.

Danks is showing some power so far, no?
Encouraging. He’s my shining star so far.
on that note
here’s an article from future sox about how much danks strikes out and what it might mean for his future.
sickels still likes griffith
I looked a little deeper into the prospect lists, and picked out three additional names capable of moving up into Top 300 consideration: Nevin Griffith in the White Sox system, Jeremy Jeffress in the Brewers organization, and Keyvius Sampson with the Padres.
Unlike Jackson, Pelzer, and Reckling, all three of these guys were early-round picks. Griffith was a second rounder out of high school in Tampa, Florida in ’07. Sampson was a fourth rounder last year, another Floridian out of Ocala. Jeffress was a first round pick in ’06 out of high school in Virginia, but as you know his drug problems and poor control have hampered his career and keep him from top consideration right now. Griffith had Tommy John surgery in 2008 and is still figuring out his craft, while Sampson has barely begun his career but is highly-regarded by scouts. All three could be Top Ten prospects in their organizations next year if things go well in ’10.

im in a keeper fantasy league

It looks like your forgot to post Marquez's line, we got him for Swisher you know...what a steal.
Marquez: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 5 ER
first round bust kyle mcculloch was promoted to charlotte
they traded for something called andrew dobies to replace him at birmingham.
looks like McCulloch was promoted to make a space for Dobies
Dobies is a soft tossing (high 80s heat) left with good control posting a 3.0 k/bb ratio and never having more then a 3.33 bb/9. He’s been able to significantly increase his k/9 by switching from starter to reliever. Also appears to have had a problem with the longball as a starter that he’s been able to correct in the pen.
He is old for AA but he missed all of 2008 with an elbow injury so we shouldn’t count that against him yet. I’d like to see him get up to AAA this year as he did spend all of last year at AA.
escobar 1-4, 2B, SF

more good work from Bellamy
larry, do you expect him at Birmingham by years end?
His name is Rios and he dances on the sand
consensus is fast riser
with a low ceiling (read: middle relief)
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
My new favorite minor league reliver:

Goldstein on Thompson
via Twitter:
Kevin_Goldstein As big as it is risky.RT @chisox2691: @Kevin_Goldstein Trayce Thompson hit his second home run tonight. What’s his ceiling?
when's he eligible to trade
for another bloated contract?
I cant believe Omogrosso is up to 9%
I gave him a sympathy vote thinking I would be his lone supporter.

It’s NBA Playoff Time, So How About Some Synergy?
Trayce Thompson, OF, White Sox (Low-A Kannapolis)
Monday’s stats: 2-for-6, HR (2), R, RBI, 2 BB, K, CS
Thompson was one of the wild cards of last year’s draft. The son of former NBA center (and former No. 1 overall pick) Mychal Thompson, Trayce is still relatively new to baseball, and while his tools and ceiling ranked with nearly any teenager in the country, he didn’t put up big numbers, even in high school because he was so raw. Seeing plenty to dream on, the White Sox dished out a $625,000 bonus to sign him, and the quickness of adjustments has been nothing short of astounding, as he’s shown up this year with a much better idea at the plate and a significantly shorter and smoother swing. With home runs in two of his last three games, the changes are paying immediate dividends, and Thompson has big time explosive potential.

Now let's keep him healthy.
Not a lot of high ceiling brothers I can fawn over.

the new guy did good stuff in that one
but how did he give up a run:
IP H R ER BB K HR ERA
2.0 1 1 0 0 5 0 0.00
He only pitched the 8th and 9th. There was one error by bham and Jax had one Sac Fly, but that was by a batter (Torres) prior to the guy (Martinez) who got the single hit. Two base error by Morel maybe? Kinda like Rios’s thing last night?
Anyway, 5Ks? I like it!
so you really think Danks is still striking out too much?
if he hits for enough power, it won’t matter that much right?
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
i was thinking Granderson
high BABIP
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
oh no doubt
i don’t have that much faith in Jordan. there’s a big difference between career MLB K rate and career MiLB k rate.

Chicago White Sox
Signed: C Jason Bour, OF Marcus Spencer (Windy City (Frontier))
Recalled: RHP Santo Luis
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Leroy Hunt, C Logan Johnson, C Josh Phegley
Reinstated from DL: RHP Scott Elarton
Spencer signed on in the Frontier League after going undrafted last year out of Alabama A&M. He went 1-for-16 (.063) for Windy City, but his lone hit was a home run. The statistical oddities don’t end there. Spencer stole four bases in four attempts, despite not recording a hit that would have placed him in stealing position. He reached first base four times by virtue of two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
stupid White Sox taking all the good Crestwood players.

gilmore's been racking up the hits lately
but they’re nearly all singles. disappointing lack of power from a fairly big dude playing 3B. and apparently he’s not exactly a whiz with the leather either.
**White Sox catching prospect Tyler Flowers is thriving offensively at Triple-A Charlotte, hitting .316/.447/.553 through 11 games, with 11 RBI, six walks, and 10 strikeouts in 38 at-bats. This is improved production compared to his ‘09 trial at the same level, where he hit .286/.364/.438 in 31 games. His defense has been so-so; he’s throw out three of 12 runners for a 25% percentage, also giving up two passed balls and making one error so far. His defense is never going to be great, but it should be enough to keep him in the lineup if he hits as expected.

Low key, Phegley kind of sucks
You guys win. You can keep your little marked-out piece of internet territory. Spend your days communicating via keyboard with people too ugly for the real world and too nerdy for anyone to care, anyway. Your piece of land is here. Getting a little excited about Griffith
He’s a ways off, but he’s got a fresh elbow and is putting up good numbers. He’s also 21, do you think he’ll move up a level this year? Doesn’t seem like he’s got much left to learn at Kanny.
interesting.
so you’re saying I should read before posting? in my defense: they have what appears to be a K for a logo. Thought that was for Kannapolis.
They have a penis for a logo
Not sure where you’re seeing a K.

BA hot sheet
No. 6 TRAYCE THOMPSON, CF
WHITE SOX
Trayce ThompsonTeam: low Class A Kannapolis (South Atlantic)
Age: 19
Why He’s Here: .385/.500/.846 (10-for-26), 3 HR, 3 2B, 7 RBIs, 6 R, 3 BB, 8 SO, 0-for-1 SB
The Scoop: Thompson struck out 41 times in 106 at-bats last summer in Rookie ball. But even with a strikeout rate hovering near 40 percent, Appalachian League managers were not deterred, praising the second-round pick for his power and physicality. This year, Thompson is making his doubters look foolish, connecting for six extra-base hits in his first week of South Atlantic League play. It’s too soon to make lofty comparisons, but Thompson’s career beginnings are reminiscent of another second-round prep pick from Southern California: Mike Stanton. The Marlins’ slugger hit all of .161/.226/.268 with 21 whiffs in 56 at-bats during his 2007 pro debut.
HELIUM WATCH
Nathan Jones, rhp, White Sox: He’s a righthander with the White Sox, can touch 98-99 mph with his fastball and is making a new transition this year. No, we’re not talking about Sergio Santos, we’re talking about Jones, who is repeating high Class A Winston-Salem while moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation. So with a high-octane fastball and a curveball that’s a knockout pitch at times, what’s the catch? Jones is already 24, in his second full season of pro ball after the White Sox drafted him in 2007 as a fifth-round pick from Northern Kentucky. Yet the early results of his transition to starting have been positive, with a 2.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings through three starts. Jones finished 2009 showing improved control, and he’s carried that over into his new role having issued just four free passes this year.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2010/269874.html
Nevin Griffith, RHP, White Sox (High-A Winston Salem): Seven shutout innings last night, 0.90 ERA in three starts (20-11-3-13). Great sinker, but will low miss bat rate catch up to him as he moves up?
…
Trayce Thompson, OF, White Sox (Low-A Kannapolis): Just exploding; three hits and a home run on Thursday; 10-for-26 with three home runs overall.
