Can White Sox Compete with Twins?

Heading into the year, the consensus among both projection systems and experts alike was that the Twins had a superior offense to the White Sox, but the Sox projected to make it a race thanks to their pitching. The Sox bullpen has been great this season, but the starting staff has left a lot to be desired. Minnesota's staff, meanwhile, has regained a staff ace in Francisco Liriano and had no trouble replacing Joe Nathan at the backend of the bullpen. They look like a 90+ win team, while the Sox have to turn it around just to get back to .500.

My objective question to you: The Twins hold a 6 game lead on the Sox. Do the Sox cut that margin in half and climb back into the AL Central race? Are the Twins too good, do they just stay away for the year.

I voted yes, because I'm normally a pretty optimistic guy

But my mind is saying no. Watching Thome mash last night on that low and away changeup, and seeing his 6th best OPS displayed before his at-bat, made me die a little inside. Then next inning Damon came up, who also has been on a tear. Mercy.

I'll say yes because I have to in order to keep watching the games

I can always be optimistic that Kenny threatens Ozzie’s job security, and the flaming retard finally decides to move Pierre down or off the line up, stop playing Vizquel when no one is hurt, and stop letting Kotsay pitch in at DH or at all. I also have to think Peavy and MB will get back to good form. Hope … Pray …

I don't like it.

I would like to say that “everything that could go wrong has gone wrong”, but that’s a lie. Andruw Jones and Paul Konerko are both exceeding any reasonable expectation. John Danks is a golden god. Sergio fucking Santos is a stud. Teahen’s OPSing at .839.. LINEBRINK HAS A 1.13 IN 8 INNINGS.

I understand that among Peavy, Floyd, Bacon, Pierre, AJ and Quentin, at least half of them are likely to regress (or would it be "pro"gress?) to the mean. But what about Paul’s eventual slump, Jones’ return to earth, etc.? We already got the One Big Injury from the Twins that I felt was needed. In the immortal words of Jim Mora, it didn’t do “diddley poo”.

I hope to hell I’m wrong, but this season already feels very, very bad.

That pretty much nails it.

I said a few weeks ago that the Twinks were uncatchable if Liriano was Liriano again. It appears as though he is. I still think they’ll miss Nathan to some extent, but it’s not nearly enough.

by dantesox on Apr 29, 2010 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Rauch will not last

He will regress, his skills don’t really support his current numbers. Plus Morneau already is having back issues. Maybe Mauer will get hurt again.

It’s great when you have to depend on injuries to other teams, instead of relying on your own team’s skills to win.

by jimmyjr on Apr 29, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

the unfortunate part of this logic

is that we should expect our bullpen to regress as well. So that will offset any offensive turnaround we might see. Instead of losing 3-1 or 4-2, we’ll be losing 6-4 or 7-5. I don’t think I’ve ever been so negative about a Sox team. This sucks.

And when AJ floats back to average. More Jones, less Pierre and Kotsay.

Wow. 28 in favor, 53 against

I’m usually pretty optimistic this early in the season. I voted Yes. I mean it’s not such an outlandish thought to think the Sox will make it within 3 games. All it takes is a little win streak and a loss streak by the Twins

by Shoeless In SC on Apr 29, 2010 10:05 AM CDT reply actions

no doubt

thats exactly what im thinking. they will have a couple blazing streaks, and i think theyll definitely get within 3, but to surpass that, we’ll all have to hope for injury to the twinks.

This is probably as good as it gets with our current lineup construction. I mean we could split hairs and move Pierre to ninth, but he’s still practically an out 75% of the time no matter where you put him.

because while I could see the starting pitching improving and the bullpen staying effective, the offense (even with expected improvement with Q, Bacon, Che) will continue to suck too much to climb out of the hole we’re already in.

I suppose the question implies “team in current form.” Should be lots of upside with BABIP, although the way Pierre hits the ball, I can see him staying at .224. Pitching will be somewhat, to much better, although some real questions have opened up there (Peavy, Floyd, Garcia’s replacement).

Also, Williams will not stand pat with this team having assembled these 4 starters. He’ll get a bat somewhere out there amongst the highways and hedges.
