that’s his right. one of the benefits of making a shitload of money is being able to be picky. but he should quit whining that good teams don’t want to pay him $1.5 million. at least he is now open to DHing and playing 1B. maybe he would have a $1.5 million job on a good team if he’d taken that tact in november.

but the reason i made that joke was that he misplayed his hand. he and kw apparently had the same read on the market. perhaps he didn’t realize that he has no defensive value whatsoever. and he was probably still holding onto that notion when thome took a part-time gig for $1.5MM. i wouldn’t want to come back for $1.5MM to a shitty team if i’d made $75MM already either. the reality is, he might be able to find that good team, but i’ll be surprised if he gets anymore money than that.
and he’s tipped his hand. he clearly wants to play, and he probably realizes that if he doesn’t play this year then his career is over. it’s hard to negotiate when the world has moved on. he’s irrelevant now. if he was truly content to sit at home on a pile of cash, then god bless. i get the impression he isn’t. he just lost the game of chicken he was playing.
my question is, will the stubborn pride that allowed him to turn down deals in the offseason in hopes of finding something better, and then keeps him complaining about what’s out there now, allow him to sign for what is truly available? or is he gonna let it end his career?
