Castro to DL, Lucy to Opening Day Roster
Backup catcher Ramon Castro could start the season on the disabled list, although a final decision won't be made until after the White Sox work out Sunday at U. S. Cellular Field.
Castro stayed in Arizona when the Sox traveled to Charlotte and Atlanta to finish spring training. He is nursing a badly bruised right heel. Donny Lucy, who is with the team, would be added to the roster.
"Depending on how (Castro) feels, we will make the decision," manager Ozzie Guillen said Saturday. "I feel pretty comfortable with Lucy. He handles the pitching staff well."

Same old same old.....
Linebrink getting tagged again.
How do they take this guy north? Just DL him for some bs injury (or real injury) and bring on Aquino, Threets, or shit at this point contact Dayton Moore and get BA in the bullpen.
because aquino is better?
hate to be the one to break it to you but, unless you’re including hudson, there’s no question linebrink is among the top seven relievers.
besides this stuff is getting silly
The White Sox success or failure is not dependent on Scott Linebrink. The only reason he’s a discussion piece is his salary. People need to let this crap go.

I absolutely agree that our success or failure is not dependent on Scott Linebrink.
But regardless of his salary I actually do think Aquino or Threets present viable alternatives to Linebrink at this point. He can’t get anybody out, and while Aquino and Threets aren’t exactly Thornton/Jenks, they at least threw the ball pretty well this spring and I actually feel more confident with either of them than Liney at this point. Threets being a lefty is even more appealing given the opening series with Minn/Cle (though I agree three lefties is probably overload). You can disagree, but I don’t think it’s really that idiotic of a point to bring up.
OK....I will accept that point.
I just hope Ozzie keeps him as the “shit cleaner” in the pen. He doesn’t deserve any meaningful innings unless they absolutely have to.
If Liney gets in,
failure is already determined.

That's on the manager who uses Linebrink in high leverage situations.
You don’t have to.

linebrink is behind
Jenks, Putz, Thornton and Pena, he won’t be a significant part of anything

You know,
we said the same shit last year, that Ozzie would be a lucicrous moron to put him into high-leverage situations. And guess what? He did. With highly predictable results.

what kind of revisionist history is this?
Linebrink wasn’t bad the whole year. As he pitched worst, Ozzie began to remove him from high lev situations when he could. Teams can’t go thru a season and use 3 relievers. Get real. He pitches better he’ll get better work as he should. Right now he’s behind the other guys. Nobody is saying you won’t EVER see him.

You are an angry man for someoneqwho gets more white tang than me.
Go back and check the 2nd half – when he was not so good. Every time he went in the board went nuts. Why else the “shitting bricks” pic by e-gus that nailed the futility? Why the “a 7 run leasd isn’t safe” jokes that were not so funny? And of course you can’t go with 3 guys. So why tempt yourself with someone for whom the results are entirely predictable vs. someone that might – might – have a little more upside?
Cut the losses – cut the bastard and don’t tempt Ozzie to use him.
"Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen five or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment."
i'm sure someone will check.
but, instead of writing a lengthy post positing what you think such a check would show, it might be easier to just check. since, you know, tdogg is probably right.
heck of a lot less higher than "neutral" leverage appearances in the second half as opposed to the first.
particularly after his terrible outings in mid-july. perhaps there are other factors involved (team not as good in second half so likely less high leverage situations) but, using pLI, seems pretty clear he didn’t get as many opportunities – certainly in comparison to thornton, pena and dotel.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=564&position=P&season=
i’d note that if your evidence of a lot of high leverage situations is jokes about a 7 run lead not being safe, well, a 7 run lead is the exact opposite of what you’re trying to prove.
except that the stat we should be looking at is gmLI, no?
since we’ re talking about how ozzie used him. and in august, after his suck was well established, his gmLI was the same as thornton, and only jenks was higher.
why would you do that
when you have the pLI for every individual game? In this case we are more interested in the “number” of times he was used in high leverage situations not the cumlative score. Linebrink was used less as the season wore on. As Larry pointed out there are a lot of neutral appearances. Even without fancy stats you can look at the box scores and see in August-Sept he rarely entered the game with the team ahead (it was correctly pointed out about them not leading many times anyway). Comparing the pLI he’s nowhere close to Thornton.
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
you can use that if you want.
i find your assertion hard to believe since his gmli for sept/oct was quite small, as i recall, but feel free to show your work.
yeah, I hold to my assertion that gmLI is the thing to look at
I only saw the monthly averages on fangraphs. looking at his play by play log, and the LI of lineys first play of each day in august (which if averaged, I think would be the monthly gmLI average) the august average of 1.29 is due to a few very high leverage (3-4) situations and then the rest below average.
I’d say even 3 high leverage situations were too many at that point, but I don’t remember the circumstances except for him sucking and everyone knowing he shouldn’t have been in.
however, even if august was bad, his usage in september was completely below average leverage, and hopefully that was a sign of how he’ll be treated this year rather than just sss coincedence…
and now the real question. does anyone read this shit once it falls off the front page?
As opposed to the 7 Jenks blew last year?

"There's no question Linebrink is among the top seven relievers."
lol.
yeah. right.
linebrink can at least throw strikes.
which at least gives our vaunted defense a chance. guys who walk more than they strike out and then throw a cookie over the plate do more damage.
linebrink is god awful.
and the only pitch he can throw for a strike is a fastball. if he doesn’t get his splitter over, which he didn’t last year, he is in serious trouble. not saying that the other guys are better…. though at this point id be inclined to give dustin hermanson a ring and see how his arm is doing. haha

Is he really?
I mean, if that is true then it’s disappointing. I have no confidence in him doing anything well when he comes into a game. i wonder if Ozzie feels the same.

Actually...
As mentioned above by stanchar, my big problem is his usage. He shouldn’t be used as anything more than mop-up duty or something. Or maybe just pitch him for 10 games stright until his arm falls off. That’ll learn him to be overpaid!!

why is it disappointing.
people really need to stop believing that teams go 15 deep or something with quality pitchers. they don’t.
at least ozzie would treat aquino like a mop up pitcher
I have no confidence that he will do that with linebrink.
I think Aquino would be better
because he would be the LAST GUY in the pen.
Is Linebrink better than Williams or Santos? Because “he’s a highly compensated vet” I think Ozzie will put him in higher leverage situations than Williams or Santos.
Admittedly Williams is probably “situational”…
Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game of 2008.

huh?
He’ll put him in higher leverage because he’s a highly compensated vet? Linebrink faced 258 batters last year. 153 of them were low leverage.

Shoulda never let him play first base
Stupid Ozzie!

I'd be grumpy if some OPOS
names Greg Novak got quoted, yet the “brain” of the site didn’t. (The name “Novak” sounds familiar to me somehow.)
BTW, I bet larry got a woody when Ozzie said he liked Lucy because he knows how to handle the pitching staff.
