i like how ozzie seems to have forgotten that he did it 24 times for him.

if swisher was a very horseshit player, i’d like to know how he describes players like pierre.

yes they are comparable

But JP’s career OBP is higher than Swisher’s was when he was with us. Plus Swisher’s career OBP is only 13 points higher than JP’s. His OPS is 100 points higher, but not everyone is going to be a homerun hitter. When you steal bases at a 75% clip that is worth something that OPS doesn’t measure.

ummmm, no i'll stick with ops thanks

If a supposed power hitter and OBP machine beats out one of the most hated free swinging, slap hitting, noodle armed speedsters in the game by only 100 points for OPS… he’s a horseshit player

not that JP isn’t, although he’s at least fun to watch (if you’re not a redneck)

oh and if you like licking the sweat off 50% of a moneyball players moneyballs i hear jack cust is available. he’s even better than JP at defense i hear

we’re in 2010. baseball analysis has long, long moved past bill james. and it’s moved well past OPS, too.

I found this exchange pretty entertaining.

Thing is, he chose OPS as his stat… and JP’s career OPS is .716, Swisher’s .821.

JP: 85 OPS+, Swisher, 116 OPS+

I suppose more useful… JP: career (11 seasons) -1.5 wins, Swisher: (7 seasons) career + 5.5 wins

In OPS grade statistics (like the one he posted above, Swisher would be a C+, Pierre a D-

too bad i benched jones today, indictive of the way my season has gone so far

two of the backbones of my rotation (de la rosa, anderson) are on the DL. i took strasburg so that is looking like a bad gamble at this point as I really need the roster spot.

thank god for colby lewis, although of course he became the first texas pittcher since ryan to throw a shutout and get the ND.

my roster looks good on paper but so far I’m 6 under .500 as we play week 4.

fuck it, go sox. prove me wrong and get to .500 by june 8th.

I just did a bunch of research on Peavy for a fanpost I was going to do...

doesn’t really point to much, going to have to wait for more data. One thing that stood out though is according to PitchFX he’s throwing his 2 seam fastball 23% of the time, which is outside his career norms. He’s throwing the 4 seamer only 30% of the time, which is again way down.

I haven’t been able to watch any of starts except the 1st one (again, month long vacation) but I have a question for those who have:

is he really throwing a 2 seam fastball almost 1/4 of the time? My theory is that the PitchFX data has just been refined to the point that they are now classifying it as a 2 seamer instead of a 4 seamer, although that is just a hunch.

He has almost “given up” on the slider according to PitchFX, although again it could be partly just a small sample and partly the classification of his other pitches to a 2 seamer, which can appear similar.

Is he really throwing a cutter 10% of the time? Again, not having seen him I have no idea, but according to PitchFX he’s throwing a bunch of pitches a bunch of different percentages than his career norms. Could be a small sample, could be the evolution of a pitcher, could be PitchFX classification problems.

I would love to have a savvy reporter ask him these questions, but it knowing the Sox beat reporters it’s not going to happen.

Velocity is down, but only slightly, to 91 on the fastball from 91.8 last year and 92.6 in 2008. Velocity usually drops as pitcher ages but most can make up for it with "knowing how to pitch’. I’m not that concerned about his velocity.

Control is a huge problem as is keeping the ball down. 41% of his pitches are going for fly balls and 10.3% of those are leaving the yard.

His walk rate is 6.28 per 9 innings, which, yea, blows.

One more slightly interesting piece of data, which might be related to the walk rate is that batters are only swining at 22% of his pitches outside the strike zone — he isn’t getting many guys to “go fishing”.

might formalize this into a fanpost later, but really the only conclusion I an draw is that it’s 28.2 innings and Jake Peavy a) can’t find the strike zone, b) when he does find it he’’s finding it right down the middle and c) he might be trying to become more of a “pitcher” than a “thrower” (see his velocity, pitch types) and that the transition is not going very well.

I’m not that worried about him after reviewing the data, I just think we need to realize he’s a solid number 2 starter at best, and he might (because of an adjustment period in his career) make those type of number 2 stats until later on in the summer and fall.

We can only hope the Sox are still around the pack of he does.

The Sox were well-aware of Swisher’s outgoing nature that could be viewed as being self-absorbed, especially after one incident in which he showed his bobblehead doll to his teammates in the clubhouse

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/05/swishers-fist-pump-noticed-by-guillen.html

you know, i would have thought that the terrible incident that would be cited as the case in point for why a player is shipped out of town would be something far worse than showing your teammates your bobblehead.

But to actually answer your question-

I was referring to the past few years, specifically the Hawks getting their asses kicked tonight (and the fact they didn’t go 4-0 in the quarter finals…)
The Bears signing Cutler and crapping WAY the hell all over the place last year.
The Bulls- The kids can play… until the playoffs, and this year, hell they didn’t even deserve to make them.
Well, Chicago Sports has to include the Cubs, and well… 2007-2008 for them… or, in one word- Soriano.
The Sox- ’Nuff said.

I should qualify all of this by pointing out I was in my formative sports years during the early 90s- You know that point in your life… where getting to third with any chick no matter how ugly she was is only slightly more important as your leadoff hitter getting to third.

The Hawks ALWAYS made the playoffs –
From ’89 on, I had Roenick and Belfour.
Chelios stepped then up, and the Hawks hit the finals in ’92.

The White Sox- 1990, last year at the old park. Would have been amazing if not for Oakland. Guillen, Walker, Ventura, FISK! (oh yeah… Sosa…I’ve got a game program from opening week of ’91… best thing ever seeing him, Bo, and Guillen in the lineup)

I had the ’93 White Sox starting rotation, oh… and the Big Hurt…
Oh yeah… and then ’94, when I still think the Sox could have taken it all.

Chicago Bulls- 1990-1993. Yeah. And then some.

Cubs- Ummm, who cares? I don’t know what they did off the top of my head.

So yeah… other than 2005 for our Guys, which I will forever hold near and dear forever… Chicago Sports have really sucked in the past 10 years… the teams make some big name signings, and then fail to live up to our expectations. YMMV.

by South Side Expat on May 2, 2010 2:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude, we've still done okay for ourselves.

Bulls: Exploded once the core team of the 90s disintegrated. Rebuilding ever since. Poised for a very solid 2010’s decade. You’re spoiled by the fact you (and I) grew up during a decade of legendary Bulls teams.

Hawks: Yeah they’ve been pretty bad, and this one falls on ownership. New owners? BETTER EVERYTHING. Again, 2010’s are looking good.

Bears: NFC North always has some random team do well it seems to cockblock the Bears out of the playoffs (except Detroit). Still, the Bears made the goddamn Superbowl one year with Orton as the primary QB, the playoffs in another year they had no business being in (2001 I think). 2010’s aren’t looking especially rosy, but each year is a relative surprise waiting to happen. And if the current year’s surprise is a shit in a box, next year might be magic. Not a bad decade for bears fans, just a couple high expectations that were failed to be met.

Cubs: In the most appropriate twist (and over-simplification) ever, a cubs fan cost the cubs a world series shot in 2003. Everything past then has been evidence of the price of hubris for cubs fans everywhere, thinking they were going to be actual threats for the WS.

Who’s left? The Sox? Dude, we’ve over-performed the entire fucking decade, with the biggest problem being a repeated failure to close August strong. Other than that? If you’re a Sox fan who hates how this decade played out, um, fuck you. I’d rather have been a Sox fan than any other team. Name a team and I’ll tell you why.

If you’re only judging a sports team’s worth by their championship-getting-status-that-year, you’re a goddamn idiot.
