SSS Mailbag
Looks like it's that time again. Let's get right to the questions.
Why is Jenks still on this team? Am I the only one who sees he doesn't have it anymore, including Ozzie? How many blown saves will it take???? Even my wife, who is a Cardinals fan, sees it. She hopes they trade him to the Cubs. Ernest Rogel Jr., LaSalle, Ill.
Settle down there, Ernie. First of all, I'm not sure what your wife's rooting interest has to do with anything. Unless she's blind and retarded - not unusual, of course, for brides in LaSalle; really need to do something about Carus Corporation's chemical polluting - I'd expect she could see it. Second, as the poll below indicates, you are not alone. You are also not alone in being told by Bobby to go f**k yourself.
Mark, I am a vendor at both Chicago ballparks. I'm calling Bobby Jenks out. I saw Jenks riding around the park on Sunday with his son on a gas powered skateboard. I am upset that he plays, has fun and then blows the lead...again. I am a Sox fan, a vendor next. I do, in fact, watch the games when I can. Lately that is for most of the game. For the money that he's paid, he should hold or save most of the games that he is put into. Not ride his skateboard around the park. Thanks for letting me sound off. I feel better already. Ron Raney, Chicago.
I agree. Players should be totally serial at all times. Particularly when they are with their child hours before they play. Bobby should be thinking - nay, obsessing - about his role every waking hour. Look at Carlos Quentin to see the excellent return on that approach. And, if I may sound off, kids today simply screw around too much. I know you're with me on this one, Ronster. When you and I were growing up, our parents would have pushed us off such a skateboard, smashed it in half and told us to get back to our work of getting them a beer.
If the Sox keep losing games, do you think Ken Williams will add a big player like he did last year with Peavy and Rios, or do you think hell be selling? Tyler M, Andrew, Iowa
The White Sox have long had the best scouting coverage of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse. Rumors have been floating for weeks that their main European scout, Jan met de Pet, has been intensely following OF Quensly Bazoer of Mr. Cocker HCAW. Bazoer is reportedly one hell of a honkballer, so it will be difficult to spring him from Mr. Cocker's hands without some quality lubricant.

It could really helpful for a Quensly Bazoer to be mentored by fellow Curacaoan Andruw Jones. Kind of like Jose Contreras/Alexei Ramirez.

First time posting on here, hopefully first of many
I read the entire Mark Gonzales Sox mailbag a few days ago and read something that has become a pet peeve of mine. That is the continued belief of so many fans that Beckham at short is a viable option. For one I think Alexei has played above average at short this year and while I am not familiar with fangraphs a whole lot, I am pretty sure it has him as the second best defensive short stop so far this season. I may be off base but the fact is that college short stops rarely translate to pro short stops. Evan Longoria played short in college and I doubt many people think he would do well there now. I may be spouting off but it is finals week and I have pulled an all nighter so bare with me. As far as the bat, Alexei has started slow all 3 years and it may sound ridiculous but I believe this is the best start he has had as a Sox.
Welcome from me as as well!
Might I suggest your next stop here be colintj’s excellent UZR primer. Then please don’t mention 6 weeks of defense sample as something to compare people by. 6 weeks of defense = 2 weeks of offense, its not big enough.
also, most shortstops don’t stay at shortstop in the majors. This is true whatever the source of the player is (HS, College, International), so singling out college SSs doesn’t seem like a useful disctinction. Anyway, Longoria would probably be a better defensive SS then Yuni. Evan is awesome.
As coffee said
Most players move down the spectrum as they get older / bigger / slower. Carlos Lee and Jim Thome were 3B’s, Konerko was a catcher, etc..
Since these kids were almost always the best players on their team growing up, they almost all played SS, CF or C. Similar to so many college football players playing QB in high school.

I know that it is a small sample size for Alexei, but I think that most fans that didn’t make up their mind as to his defensive prowess last season would say that he has improved and played a good SS. He still makes some bonehead moves but I see him reaching a lot of balls and hitting the mark at an above average rate. I see him field fast but in control and playing the ball off the bat better. I should say that I am a huge Alexei fan and I was hoping that Omar’s biggest impact would be Alexei’s defense. I was just out of high school his rookie year and perhaps my youthful exuberance will forever cause me to have his and Q’s back. That being said if anyone here disagrees with me on his progress I would be happy to hear feedback.
You need more data for Alexei but I wouldn't
call him a small sample. He’s played there over a year and has over 1500 innings. Alexei and Rios have an ability to save a lot of runs over the next couple of years.
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
by the way
anyone have a clue why Alexei’s range was so poor at 2b? I understand it wasn’t his natural position but should it have been that drastic?
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
No idea.
Though perhaps the UZR is too small of a sample size to accurately reflect his actual range. He looked pretty range-y going into CF for pop-ups. OTOH he shied away from contact at the pivot so perhaps it was a reflection of his comfort level with that area of the diamond, or perhaps he didn’t pick up the ball quickly enough.
I’m just glad his range looks OK at SS.

one is 23 and a good offensive player. the other is 28 and a not so good one.
which do you build a team around.
So with this thinking
If I recall correctly, then you believe the Sox should trade or should have traded Alexei?
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
If you go with a certain high offensive upside player at SS
it means you’re “building a team around him” but not if you have him play 2B?
Why must Beckham play SS to be considered someone we’re building the team around?
Why not play the better defensive player of the two (albeit this may not be demonstrated statistically as reliably as the offensive numbers might) at SS?
Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game of 2008.

because this is the white sox, not another intelligently run team.
ramirez is probably going to suck in four years. maybe he’s got a longer shelf life than that, or maybe it’s shorter. in four years, we’re going to hear how gordon beckam can’t move to SS because he’s a 2B now. so then the white sox will seek another SS and it is harder find a SS than a 2B or 3B. i’d rather solve the issue of SS for the next decade than 2B for the next decade.
That explanation makes a bit more sense.
In the short term though, it makes no sense to swap them. Ramirez wasn’t exactly great at 2B. (-5.6 UZR, -7.1UZR150) And making Gordon become readjusted while also struggling at the plate makes a double no-no.
by Shoeless In SC on May 13, 2010 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Who the hell knows what 4 years from now will bring.
Becks is no sure thing. Maybe they sign him to a long-term contract, maybe not. I know businesses have 1,3,5,10 year plans, but I can’t remember the last time the Sox built a team around any one player for 4-5 years. And at the very least you might acknowledge Che at SS so far this year has worked fine, as Che has fielded his position well and both have sucked at the plate.

What was Hurt's longest contract?
I wouldn’t consider MB, PK, and AJ’s contracts as “franchise” contracts. I think larry may feel Becks is a good enough, young enough, charismatic enough person who plays a key enough position around whom you can build a franchise.
But I would never consider ehnancing his answer for him.

seven years.
of course, those nasty white sox invoked that clever diminished skills clause after five.
on any team other than the yankees and red sox, MB and PK are franchise contracts. you don’t commit that kind of money to players unless you consider them cornerstones.
I stand corrected on Hurt,
though I remember the diminished clause. He was a franchise player.

4 cups of flour
1 1/2 cups milk
2 pk. yeast
4 heaping Tbl. sugar
a dash of salt
4 Tbl. butter
8 egg yolks
Boil milk, add butter and sugar, and then cool.
Add yeast and milk and beat egg yolks in well with beater.
Add this mixture to flour. Let rise for 2 hours.
Roll out lighly on floured board to 3/8 inch thickness, and cut out round circles.
Lighly cover with cloth and let rise again about 1/2 hour.
Fry in hot Crisco oil (Vegetable oil) or Lard.
Bismarcks will turn nice brown on both sides after being flipped over.
Bismarcks should drain for a few seconds on paper toweling.
If you want Jelly Bismarcks, add Jelly after they are fried. Use a pastry bag to add jelly.
You can also sprinkle powdered sugar on top of Bismarcks.

Dick Biondi still remembers when fans would stand in the alley outside his old radio studio on Michigan Avenue and yell up to him through the fifth floor window. Soon the legendary disc jockey will be able to call that spot his own.
Biondi, 77, who earlier this month celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first broadcast on WLS, said he was overwhelmed by the honor. "That is so great," he told me just after the vote made it official. "For a skinny Italian kid from the North Side of Upstate New York, I can’t believe all this is happening." Particularly delighted by the alley’s "underground" location, Biondi quipped: "I’m always telling everybody that my fan club has their headquarters on Lower Wacker."

I'm sure you can find people who are just as funny
But the media landscape is so fractured that you will never find people who owned the town like they did.
There was a reason why Gary Deeb (and later Robert Feder’s) column read like the sports page. Millions of dollars and huge egos were on the line.
Personality radio is pretty cheap. Get two funny 20 somethings. Put them in a room every morning at 5. Pay them 60k per year. You’ll make money.
YouTube, podcasts, etc. demonstrate there are a lot of creative people out there, and right now they’re doing it for free. I think the radio industry should tap into that creativity.

his regular season was one of his best, at least according to PER.
I like how the Celtics fans started chanting, “New York Knicks.” Yeah, that’s smart. Your team is going to be mediocre in two years and you’re chanting for the best player in the NBA to go to a rival. That’s intelligent.
I'm talking about just this week.
LeBron ripped the Celtics in half just last Friday, it’s a shocking turnaround.
And regarding the Knicks chant, Bill Simmons actually got that ball rolling.

Sorry, but he’s proven himself in big games more than enough while his coach and GM continue to get passes for shoddy roster construction and inept play-calling. Kobe’s looked way worse in these scenarios, but since he has the rings no one dares question his “it” factor.

thew nba plays an ugly brand of basketball now.

piss poor fundamentals
lack of a concept of team play in some instances(Atlanta), I find it hard to sit through an entire game some times.
"the worst thing about this team is going to be the manager." - Ozzie Guillen, USA Today Sports Weekly
"Piss poor fundamentals"
please explain. I hear that charge levied all the time, and find it pretty absurd on its face. Guys don’t make it to and stay at that level without being pretty excellent fundamentally. I find it particularly funny when people say the college game is “more fundamentally sound” than the pro game. I don’t think those folks watch much college basketball, as at any one time there are likely an average of two-or-three guys on the floor who are absolutely not “fundamentally sound”.
I can’t say I’ve watched Atlanta much, but what you said about them — too much 1-on-1 game — is similar to what I’ve read. And I would use that as an argument against folks who think the NBA is too much iso. Atlanta almost got bumped in the first round by a team who didn’t have the services of its best player, and they shouldn’t have even shown up for round two. You simply aren’t going to last long as an NBA coach if all you can draw up is a clear-one-side isolation play for your best player.
i watched Atlanta beat the Mavs a couple months back
they were completely entertaining.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.

"the worst thing about this team is going to be the manager." - Ozzie Guillen, USA Today Sports Weekly
Again -- the notion that college basketball makes 18 year olds better fundamentally requires a bit more explanation/proof
it simply doesn’t stand to reason either intuitively — college kids are limited in the time a coach can spend with them. The pros are a business, it’s your job. You can spend all day and night in the gym if need be. — or (I would guess) empirically. As high as the high-school-straight-to-the-NBA flame-out rate was, I would imagine the rate is/was similarly high for 18 year olds who go to college. At least in the former scenario, the flame-outs are allowed to cash in on their potential.
I have a hard time believing the one and done college players are missing court time studying literature.
Im clearly in the minority here, so I guess we have to agree to disagree.
"the worst thing about this team is going to be the manager." - Ozzie Guillen, USA Today Sports Weekly
they are missing "formal" practice time.
and while i’m no expert on basketball, i’m guessing that what these players lack is not fuck around time on the court playing pick up games against players who aren’t as good as them but, for lack of a better word, the fundamentals keith refers to.
Atlanta ran almost a pure iso offense w/ Joe Johnson
so yeah it would look like lack of team play. Portland did as well w/ Brandon Roy.
This is not early panic, it’s continued disgust with a situation we didn’t like to begin with. - Grinder in Training

This is correct
I didn’t realize how old he was — 33. Damn.
I can’t speak much to the teams of the 80s. Were there any teams back then who had a worse second-best player than Williams/Jamison? I’d be really shocked if there was. That’s simply not all that high of a bar.
Personally I think he was hurt but
regardless. At this stage of his career he doesn’t have anybody close to Pippen or Shaq as 2nd/1st.
He isn’t Jordan….blah blah. So what? This whole thing is obnoxious and overbearing. Lebron doesn’t walk around spitting on MJ and claiming he’s better.
A relatively healthy Celtic team was better and its a good chance Orlando was too.
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
Any team with a dominant big man
Garnett, Howard, etc.. is going to give LeBron trouble as long as he’s stuck with garbage like Shaq. Especially if he’s injured, getting to the lane just doesn’t happen b/c no one respects the rest of his team so they just collapse the lane on him.
He needs a better supporting cast.

I agree with this
not that either teams are guaranteed winners in the CFs, but I’m much looking forward to an Orlando/LAL rematch. Orlando has the size to deal with both of LAL’s big guys (Gortat — Poland’s best!), and Jameer Nelson should tear Derek Fisher to shreds. Kobe is good, but I don’t think he alone is good enough to carry them for seven games (or four, rather).
I wanted Cleveland-LAL just to hear all the idiot Lakers fans try and defend Kobe when he came up short
But, now they just have more ammo.
Orlando can’t get away with playing Gortat and Howard at the same time. Their best lineup is with Rashard at the 4 stretching the defense and raining threes. Gasol may act like a ninny against physical defenders, but he’s simply unstoppable against smaller forwards (as Utah and OKC and now Phoenix will prove).
Lost in the LeBron drama is how much of a turnaround Boston made. They really did not look good at all for the entire 2nd half of the season, then Q-Rich throws an elbow and all of a sudden they’re looking like contenders again.

I'd be surprised if they don't run Gortat + Howard a little bit more often against LAL than they would against other teams
I don’t remember much from last year’s series — did Gasol eat Lewis alive? It would seem that way. The scales obviously shift quite a bit* in Orlando’s favor if Bynum’s knee takes any more damage.
Regarding Boston, yeah — I don’t know if my dislike for KG and Pierce blinds me, but they looked good. KG in particular looked like he’s not, in fact, dead, but perhaps that’s more because he got to go up against an undersized Jamison, a fat, slow and old Shaq and a partly-hurt Varejao.
*I don’t mean this to say that Orlando would be big favorites over LAL, but rather that Bynum off the floor means Gasol has to go up against Howard for a whole series.
True, a lot does ride on Bynum. Lewis vs Odom is a much better matchup for Orlando
They tried Gorat/Howard last year and a couple times during their regular season matchups, it’s just too wonky. It could work for a few minutes at a time, but since neither guy can spread the floor it kind of just works against the Magic’s offensive gameplan. The key matchup is Jameer since he’s been on fire lately and the Lakers have Derek Fisher’s bald corpse. I’m not really prepared to live in a world where Vince Carter is a crucial cog in a championship team.

he had a pretty solid coaching career before the KC fiasco. He has some knowledge of the division, managed in the yankees minor league organization for over a decade – which means he taught fundamentals, something the sox have lacked for awhile.
I know it won’t happen…but it should.

Buddy Bell might put in a good word for him.
Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''
jesus christ.
i don’t care if the sox are awful…. I am finding myself watching a Nationals 14-6 thumping of the Rockies… thank goodness we don’t have a day off for a while.

they are my NL team ever since I saw Zimmerman go through Savannah.

Carlos Quentin = Ron Kittle
That is very funny, whoever wrote it. But I have a sneaking suspicion Carlos Quentin won’t be on Facebook, posting pictures of his dog wearing funny hats.
Theain is the guy I Just can’t stand! pierre is almost as bad,he dose get on base more. If Quntin gets any worse trade him. WE NEED HELP!
He won't be at Fantasy Camp, either.
Or be my FB friend. Too intense.

Kittle should be called upon to tell TCQ to relax.
They can ride bikes, go to some greasy spoon in NW Indiana, or take Harley for a walk.
You probably got the full show at fantasy camp, but I’m pretty sure Kittle’s picture is next to the word “guy” in the dictionary.

yep, except for the whole dog outfit thing.
Met him during the US Cell tour last summer – he took a cute picture with my kid and flirted with my wife. Pretty cool dude. His FB posts are also pretty motivational.

Sounds like we should be asking your wife what he was like instead of asking you?

Any reason for all these two-game series'?
It feels like the Sox have more this month (three) than they’ve had the past several years.
yeah I cant even remember the last 5 game week for the Sox

My friend just gave me a Scott Podsednik action figure. He's "stealing 2nd" in this particular action. Still in its original packaging. Mint condition.

Lee Dewyze is in Mount Prospect
The American Idol finalist, bye the bye.
I’ve struggled all morning – tempted to call him Dewayne Wise.
Under the circumstances, one of the best American Idol finalists I’ve ever seen….

HQ notes
CHICAGO at KANSAS CITY (8:10 PM)
*Mark Buehrle (30 BPV) has a 6.23 ERA over his last five starts, and his skills don’t offer much consolation: 4.7 Dom, 1.8 Cmd, 5.02 xERA. One ray of hope? Five of his seven starts have come against MIN, NYY, TAM, TEX, and TOR, five of the six highest-scoring teams in the AL. The Royals may offer him a chance to turn things around.
Gil Meche (-81 BPV) is coming off a 128-pitch outing in which he issued 7 walks. He just faced the White Sox 11 days ago and fired a PQS-1, with 5 ER over 5 IP. His 8.24 ERA, 7.1 Ctl, 0.7 Cmd, and 6.78 xERA scream “stay away.”
NOTES: A.J. Pierzynski has a career .339 BA and .478 SLG in 224 AB at Kauffman Stadium.

Fangraphs on Andruw
Trade him now and get some value before he turns back into a pumpkin?
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/next-few-weeks-will-be-telling-for-andruw/
Yeah this makes little sense
He makes 500K there is zero risk in the White Sox in his upside for production this year.
Nobody is giving up a valuable prospect for him
He was hurt last year which also hurt his 2nd half numbers. He’s clearly in better shape, with perhaps the best medical staff in baseball. No he won’t keep up the pace but trading him is goofy.
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
If (when) the Sox are out of it, why keep him?
Unless they decide to extend him later, it makes little sense to keep him around when they could get a prospect (or prospects) younger and probably more talented. After this year he’s probably going to ask for a significant raise.
by Shoeless In SC on May 14, 2010 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions
The point of the article is
to trade him now. It implies his value falls later (it would if he has an extreme regress). Risk/ Reward now favors keeping him to try and compete. Sure in July if the Sox are 14 games out. Knock yourself out.
"Anywhere white people are poor, I'm afraid to go" Lawrence Holmes 670 the Score
point is still that nobody is giving anything up in an andruw jones trade. that's why it ain't worth discussing.
Cashing checks and having sex.
I wonder what someone would want for him...
His contract is pretty darned appealing. I’m for it… his low average and luck with HR’s and flyballs is something that doesn’t look good going forward.
But yeah, what can you get for him?
by Shoeless In SC on May 14, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions
I think the return could be good since he is so cheap
but as the dogg-father said maybe if the sox are way out in two months, no way you trade him now.
after this weekend, the sox can be just 5 games back!
"the worst thing about this team is going to be the manager." - Ozzie Guillen, USA Today Sports Weekly
His low average is a product of a low BABIP
His contact rate is higher than previous years and he hits a lot of flyballs in a homer friendly park. No he won’t stay at this level but he probably hits a big number of dingers with PT. I’m all for regression and averages but sometimes you can take a look to see if there are any obvious changes. I don’t care if the team is not going to sign him.
