White Sox Minor League Update Habla Español
As noted in the front page post, the Dominican Summer League starts today. Some of the names are familiar to me and I'll be including them in the box score updates because they were on the team last season and had good stats. But I'm also going to choose a random player to follow. There aren't any highly amusing names but help me choose by voting below.

I'm not concerned
I have to believe he’s been instructed to work on a technique at the plate which is causing struggle for the time being, but will balance his offensive attack in the long run. He has been a pretty consistent hitter thus far in his pro career and never experienced such a poor month as this. Behind the plate is where most of his improvement and skill needed to still develop, but if the White Sox wanted him to work on anything else while he’s still holding in AAA now would probably be the time to do that since he had proven himself at each stop
Hope you are correct.
But as opposed to someone like Tiger Woods, who can totally deconstruct his swing and not totally fuck up his mental process I worry that this kid might not have the same mental discipline to not completely forget his past success and get into a funk from which he can’t recover.

When Flowers joined the White Sox, the story was about a Major League-ready hitter who needed work behind the plate. Flash-forward two springs, and Williams told MLB.com how Flowers had progressed nicely in the catching department but needed to make changes in the mechanics of his swing in order to show he was an everyday catcher.
Those changes were implemented by Flowers. But with all due respect to the organization, Flowers wants to somewhat return to a more familiar style that made him previously successful.
“At the point where I’ve tried doing it their way this last month, sadly enough the numbers speak for themselves, and that way doesn’t totally work,” Flowers said. "I have to go back to the old me. I have to go back to my style of hitting, while implementing the little things Walk [White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker] and Kenny talked about.
“I’m about being a little more aggressive. I haven’t been happy with not driving balls anywhere, especially to right field. I’m not driving them like I can and why Kenny traded for me. I’ve lost that since spring. It has even been frustrating in batting practice. But I think I found where that piece was missing. I’m pumped up to get my game going and get my timing back and get rolling.”
My attention is the kiss of death.
I am off this thread before I fuck up our whole minor league system.
Too late…

Brent Morel, 3B, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham): 2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI.
After batting .352 in May, the White Sox moved Morel up to Charlotte this morning, hoping that the 23-year-old can be ready for a September audition in the big leagues. He’s an interesting prospect who takes a while for scouts to warm up to. He’s not loaded with tools, but he has a knack for hard contact, is fundamentally sound both in the field and on the base paths, and has make up that is truly off the charts, playing with a max effort that endears him to both managers and teammates. Nothing about his screams future All-Star, but he’s better than Mark Teahen.
…
Carlos Torres, RHP, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte): 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 10 K. Hard to get too excited about a 27-year-old, but Torres has big league quality stuff and his whiffed 69 in 66 innings.

I wouldn't go that far
Not just yet. But they’re definitely heading in the right direction. The Zimmermann injury hurt, he was my favorite rookie pitcher from ’09.

certainly possible
but the dude put up 1.8 WAR in 91 IP. Rough math makes him a 4 WAR pitcher over a full season.
his peripherals are good too. 3:1 K:BB, .99 HR/9, 67.5% lob, would like to see a higher then 43% GB rate. But he’s a hell of a talent.
they still have rinku and dinesh (indian (subcontinent) pitchers)
so I’m sold. also, this is an excellent time to jump on the Andrew McCutchen bandwagon. Dude is fucking gold.

Chicago White Sox
Released: RHP Scott Elarton, LHP Alan Embree, LHP Alex Farotto, LHP Joe Torres
Recalled: SS Brent Lillibridge
Option transferred: RHP Jhonny Nunez (Double-A to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Trayce Thompson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Johnnie Lowe, RHP Charlie Shirek, LHP Erick Threets, C Adam Ricks

According to multiple online reports, Thompson will have surgery on his right thumb and could miss a month or more. The ’09 second-rounder has cooled off after a fast start and is batting .236/.283/.458 with six home runs in 144 at-bats for low Class A Kannapolis.

Outfielder Jared Mitchell, the White Sox top pick and 23rd player selected overall in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, has been watching a lot of baseball over the past two months. He would rather be playing, but a torn tendon on the inside of his left ankle suffered during a Cactus League contest in Tempe, Ariz., cost the five-tool talent that 2010 on-field opportunity.
“I guess you could say it was a little frustrating,” said Mitchell during a Thursday conference call about the season-ending injury, which came after he made a positive impression during Spring Training and on the heels of his .296 effort over 115 at-bats at Class A Kannapolis last year. “I try not to let it bother me too much, because everything happens for a reason. I try not to worry how or why it happened, and just push forward to get better and get back.”
Mitchell is rehabbing in Baton Rouge, La., and just started doing some lower body work this past week. He’s done a lot of balance and strengthening exercises and runs on an underwater treadmill a couple of times per week.
Baseball activity won’t resume for the 21-year-old until he starts running on flat surface. But Mitchell remains hopeful he will be ready for instructional league action and possibly to play in the Arizona Fall League. He also has been told the element of speed, which is important to his game, won’t be hampered once he fully recovers.
“I’m fortunate to be in that situation,” said Mitchell, who will be representing the White Sox at the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. “I’m ecstatic about coming back 100 percent. I’m going good, and I’m looking forward to progressing every day.”
"He also has been told the element of speed, which is important to his game, won’t be hampered once he fully recovers."

Community mock draft is finished at Sickels' site
SSS poster The Big Hurt picks:
13. White Sox: Deck McGuire, RHP, Georgia Tech
63. White Sox: Jacob Petricka, RHP, Indiana State University
95. White Sox: Jacoby Jones, SS, Richton HS, Mississippi
McGuire sounds somewhat similar to Mike Leake of last year, or maybe even Daniel Hudson — limited ceiling, average-ish stuff, good command and should move through the system quickly. Is that apt?
so mcguire fell in that draft?
and that scouting report is what i’ve heard. as long as he’s throwing 92-93 in college, i’d be cool with that. none of this mcculloch/broadway bullshit.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
Am I wrong to say it's a thin line between the Hudson/Leake types versus McCulloch/Broadway?
what separates the two — a little bit of velo? Command? Both? If it’s the former, that’s tough — weren’t both Broadway and McCulloch considered low-90s fastball types coming out of college? Certainly the Sox wouldn’t have drafted either if the expectation would be that they’d barely be 90 MPH fastballers, right?
(Eek — that’s a lot of questions.)
Hudson is 92-94, Broadway and McCulloch couldn't break 90 regularly iirc
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
