Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Baseball Intellect, in a story posted just after the game last night--what a novel idea--notes the mechanical differences between peavy's recent starts (before last night) and his previous form in San Diego. The verdict? Barely noticeable changes may make a big difference... In any event, he sure looked like they guy we traded for last night

HQ notes -Sigh ----BABIP anyone?

Kansas City at Chicago (8:10)

Luke Hochevar (34 BPV) had pitched respectably prior to last week’s Disaster at Tampa Bay, when he suffered a third-inning knockout after being hammered for 11 hits and nine earned runs, inflating his ERA (6.11). While the 3.9 Ctl and 1.6 Cmd here indicate that Hochevar’s skills have been rather marginal, the 37 h%, 62% S%, and 4.62 xERA indicate he has been unfortunate.

Gavin Floyd (56 BPV) sports an early-season line remarkably similar to that of Hochevar. Floyd has also battled early-season Control issues (4.1 Ctl), has one particularly ugly Disaster inflating his ERA (6.49), and has been unfortunate with regard to hit-rate (37%) and Strand (60%). As the 4.39 xERA and 60% PQS-DOM rate indicate, Floyd has been much better than the surface stats suggest.

NOTES: The KC offense has struggled recently, producing only 18 runs in the past seven games. Chicago’s offense presents a bit of an anomaly. CHW ranks last in the AL in team BA, despite compiling the fewest strikeouts of any offense in the league, indicating Chicago hitters have put the ball in play consistently without corresponding results. The offense, therefore, has been largely dependent upon the long-ball, ranking second in the AL in HR, and a running-game which leads the league in SB.

From Olney's blog:

8. Jake Peavy was The Man for the White Sox.

Why Peavy won: His slider returned. Peavy’s dominance on his slider, his signature pitch, returned after some early-season struggles. In his first five starts, Peavy’s slider was hit to the tune of a .387 opponents batting average, including a .581 slugging percentage. It was a strike 61.7 percent of the time, and chased just 33.8 percent of the time. On Monday, the Royals hit just .167 against it, and it was a strike 80 percent of the time, and chased 50 percent of the time.

Love me some slider!

He could be useful as a part of a platoon at second base if we had a Getz type there from the left side....

but then you’re probably already conceding you’re second division status, unless you have about five all-stars at other positions.

Does fuckin' Pierre have something on Ozzie....

like something Ozzie would want to keep from his wife? I actually wouldn’t have a problem with him in the lineup much of the time if he were hitting ninth, where he should be.

by dantesox on May 4, 2010 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

my theory

Pierre has to, at some point this year, start hitting. He is a lifetime ~.300 hitter and odds are that he will start to creep up to that number from here on out. They don’t have a replacement for him at the top of the order, unless you want to put Rios there. So he might as well keep him at the top and reap the rewards for sticking with him. Eventually he’ll get an XBH too, right?

Twitter IS the future

Over on his twitter page, JJ from White Sox Examiner was kicking around the idea of firing Ozzie.

He doesn’t like the idea, and neither do I (despite my fanpost of last week, which was really a jumping off point for discussion).

Anyway, I get this response:

1.Young white players aren’t thriving under Ozzie. Lots-A-Latinos on the team. Chem.. might be off. Just saying.

It’s too stupid to merit a response. Gordon Beckham was great last year, and is slumping because he is, after all, 24 years old.

There are five Latinos on the team, and I’m being kind of generous. You’ve got Rios, Vizquel, Garcia, Castro, and Santos.

awwww, JJ just retweeted my response.

Way I see it, Ozzie would have to do everything short of clubbing a baby seal in front of me, for me to support his firing…

But I feel now more than ever, that some of his unique lineups are more driven by his ego and Cartman-esque “respect my authority!” mentality than the desire to win ballgames.

And that’s frustrating as hell, especially for those of us who have always been more than willing to defend his craziness.
