The Serpent and (where the hell is my) Rainbow? A May Review
One of my favorite horror movies was on the other day. In addition to scaring the crap out of me the 1st time I saw it (it was late and dark- did I say it was late?) , there were some great face off scenes with 2 of the main characters. There is the answer seeking Dr. Dennis Allen and his formidable absolutely terrifying foe Dargent Peytraud. Call it good vs evil. Out of boredom I googled some of the memorable quotes.
Dargent Peytraud: By the way, Doctor Allen. What did you dream about this afternoon? A woman in your arms? The sea at your doorstep? Nooooo! You dreamt of me and of the grave. I know because I was there. And I can be there every time you close your eyes. The pain I cause you, in the room upstairs, is nothing to the pain I can cause in your own mind. Remember that... Doctor Allen.
Kind of reminds me of the pitching staff huh? I dreamed of a 2005 staff......
Look. The White Sox are trying to ruin my summer. Larry recently remarked to me, "let it go Tdogg its over." One step forward, two steps back. I thought back to the Serpent and the Rainbow. Many of the lines reminded me of the current White Sox and the horror that one would feel with a premature burial. Is there hope?
Dennis Alan: Don't let them bury me! I'm not dead!
In some ways May presented an opportunity. Of course some of this is regular habit. The weather is warming. Things should pick up offensively right? Right?
Dargent Peytraud: Ahh, Doctor Allen! Why are you in Haiti, Doctor Allen?
Dennis Alan: It says there on the passport I'm a tourist. I came to see the sights.
Dargent Peytraud: Yes, happy happy happy island people! Then why visit an insane asylum?
Asylum indeed. Jim over at Sox Machine makes a reference to this as he tries to figure exactly "who" is running the team. I mean we know about some of the curious decisions lately and aversion to major league hitters, but this team remains confusing as hell. It goes without saying that June is pretty much it. They either play themselves sort of in this thing or KW should consider moving parts or at least blowing some mysterious dust in somebody's face.
Anybody seen Joe West?
RS 210

2009 (24-25 212 scored/ 226 runs allowed)
The Sox were one game under for the month. The good news is the SSS meetup - i mean hookup gave us a modest winning run, 6-4 since the "hex". The bad news is they are now 8.5 games out.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Offensive
.239/.315/.395 wOBA .316 (9th in AL)
.710 OPS (9th in AL)
.252/.321/.399 wOBA .319 (9th in AL)
Yeah there was some improvement but nearly enough. Greg Walker should still be fired. Regression has actually kicked in but s l o w l y. Team BABIP is up to a robust .248 but that's still extremely low and 20 points less than Houston. There were just too many bad hitters in the month.
DH- Hydra's total number line is .222/.305/.349. Thome in a part time role? .235/.377/.482
1B- Konerko .266/.366/.567 wOBA .396. Well so much for 80 homers. Kong still has a nice year going but a .712 OPS May with 3 dingers is not what the team needs.
2B- Beckham .196/.286/.239 wOBA .249 Mind is made up. Send this kid to the minors. No extra base hits in May.
SS- Alexei .254/.288/.385 wOBA .289 .779 OPS for May. We've seen this drill before. His career monthly OPS
April .511, May .741, June .867, July .825, Aug .808 & Sept .694. I don't back off my statement. He'll be a 3 WAR player this year.
3B -Teabag .255/.340/.387 wOBA .319 His numbers are eerily close to the team averages. If he's the team's wind sock....oh boy.
CF -Rios .312/.368/.590 wOBA .419. I could write about 5 paragraphs on what Rios has done this year. What I really wish is the "five" swings moment he shared with Walker could be spread to the rest of team. Alex has done it all. Power and speed. He's clearly been a gamble worth taking.
RF-Quentin .211/.315/.382 wOBA .309. Umm you do realize that Superman was like strong? ISO of less than .200 is just not acceptable for the power hitting batter we expect. Will the real Carlos Quentin please stand up? If it's this one sit down.
LF -Pierre .245/.304/.275 wOBA .282 Tailed off at the end of the month but batted .286 with a .339 OBP. Honestly the least of our worries.
C -AJ .211/.255/.309 wOBA .248 Had a hot week and half but returned to suckitude. Is he doing the reverse 5 and 10? Suck so bad you "can't move him. With Flowers working on his swing maybe its time to give Castro more abs. Oops sorry he's performed even worse.
DH/OF -A Jones .230/.342/.508 wOBA .378 Same thing as Kong. Regressed but still having a good year. I know folks are afraid of a repeat but as long as he stays healthy a few of the fly outs will clear the wall this hot summer.
Bench -Kotsay, Vizquel, Nix. Kotsay rebounded for a .800+ Ops May. Omar still has zero business ever batting at the top of a lineup. Nix ended his horrible month with a grand slam. All is forgiven. Just kidding.

Pitching
[Doctor Allen is straped in a chair about to be tortured]
Dennis Alan: I'm a U.S. citizen! Think about that!
Dargent Peytraud: I don't see the Ambassador here, do you?
The crown jewel of this White Sox was supposed to be the starting pitching. Newsflash. It hasn't been. The bullpen has been a mix of the Good, the Bad and the downright Ugly. Parts don't seem to work at the same time. At least work well that is.
YTD
4.59 ERA (10th)/ 4.03 FIP (4th)
k/9 7.58 (2nd in league)
bb/9 3.39 (improved to 7th)
hr/9 .95 (now 6th)
So on one hand the team improved on the walks that were a problem, but it didn't matter because reality hit home with well -home runs. The staff also continues to be last in LOB% or strand rate 69.1%.
Starting Staff
ERA FIP K/9 BB/9
Danks 3.34 3.32 7.24 2.92
Floyd 6.02 3.98 7.41 3.09
Buehrle 4.38 4.32 3.50 2.19
Garcia 5.26 5.40 5.44 3.51
Peavy 6.23 4.63 8.05 3.25
Danks- Had a rough month, especially compared to the dealing April version. We joke Danks doesn't know how to win. Strikeouts decreased and he allowed almost 4 walks per 9 in May. Lets get that back on track John. He has continued to keep the Hrs down .50/9 this month.
Floyd- Continues to pitch better than his "glossy" numbers indicate but still manages to have that 1 moment in a game that it gets away from him. BABIP remains high .343. Gavin has to feel frustrated but his numbers will come back into line by season's end.
Buehrle- Control is starting to come back (less than 2 walks per 9 in May) but the K rate is worrisome.
Garcia- Quite acceptable if he has 2-3 good games followed by a clunker
Marielle Duchamp: The way Dr. Schoonbacher spoke of you, it was as though you could walk on water! Now I know why. Shit floats!
Peavy- Oh Jake. May started with a bang as he had 3 outstanding starts. It didn't last. The positive for Peavy? May yielded a k/bb rate of 8, so the control is there. The problem is the dingers. 1.55/9 in May. The numbers are coming down but not fast enough for the Sox sake. Less speeches more pitching. I mean more good pitching.
The Big Four
ERA FIP K/9 BB/9 LOB%
Jenks 6.23 4.12 11.12 5.82 68.3%
Thornton 1.59 1.09 12.71 1.99 76.5%
Putz 3.38 2.55 12.38 1.69 73.8%
Santos 0.48 1.94 11.09 3.38 95%
No we can't trade Bobby Jenks so stop asking. His BABIP is .450+ but let's face it. He walks too many batters and makes questionable pitch selections (maybe we should just blame AJ). Thornton is really an example of how top relievers should be used in baseball. I just want to see a few more closing opportunities. Thorndog also presents another problem in a very weak year for the White Sox. They probable really have more than the customary 1 all star representative. Also if your goal is home field advantage, wouldn't you want this guy in the bullpen? Santos is still my favorite story and Putz is really not a putz.
The Rest
Pena- ERA 4.05/FIP 4.54- More than a few have noticed he has been quietly effective lately and stepped up to the challenge of long relief. You can argue that his 4 inning stint vs Cleveland in the Joe West affair helped the Sox to a 2-2 record at Tampa.
Linebrink- ERA 4.19/FIP 3.69- How about a 6.35 era in May. Can't you at least wait until after the all star break as usual?
Williams- ERA 5.40/FIP 6.34- The only comment needed is the Sox recently gave Alan Embree a tryout.
Solid bullpen. And probably the source of a couple of prospect pickups if trading starts (mainly Putz).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defense
All these numbers are subject to classic SSS and wild swings blah blah blah....
Defensive Efficiency is now .683 (12th in the AL). Again you can't tell anything from UZR for a predictive nature but there is value in knowing the results.
Team UZR -4.6 (9th)
Team UZR/150 -2.3 (10th)
Excuse me. I have a question. If you are going to build your team around pitching and defense, shouldn't you have like a good defense? This is even more maddening considering the range that Pierre (6.8), Rios (5.9) and Ramirez (4.1) have shown and that they rank at the top of LF, CF and SS. This is like having Marshall Faulk on your fantasy football team in 2000 and screwing up the rest of your draft to finish 7th. Look no further then the rest of the overall defense for the piss poor strand rates. Konerko is slowing down and Quentin and Teabag as you know are bad. Is it now a White Sox tradition for bad RF defense? Side note. Alexei makes errors. Get over it. Think Robin Ventura. These guys will save more runs then they allow. A lot more. I see this morning Teabag may be DL bound. I guess that's one way to improve your defense.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team Base Running
Per BP the team’s Equivalent Base Running Runs (EqBrr)
The White Sox rank 22nd in baseball with a total score of -4.5
Pierre (1.4) and Rios (1.1) have been the best baserunners and the genius AJ ranks dead last (-2.1)
52 sbs and 22 caught stealing for a 70% conversion rate. That is headed in the wrong direction and is becoming counterproductive. Here is the real problem though. Compare the White Sox speed with Tampa. In addition to the Rays having more steals and less times caught they both have negative overall SB scores. Most teams do. However the Rays have extremely high hit and misc advancement opportunity scores. They also don't make dumb outs. It's things like that helping them to a team score of +5.7 instead of a negative.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that's all I have right now. Add your own. Right now the "no" for the within 3 games poll experienced an uptick %wise. Minnesota pushed their lead up in the last week by sweeping Texas. I know many want to give up but there are too many direct games left to totally cash in.
Dargent Peytraud: When you wake up scream, Doctor Allen. Scream all you want. There is no escape from the grave.
We're waiting next to the grave with a shovel, but is this team worth saving?

I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
What are the prospects of FSR being more widespread in the coming years,
and therefore (hopefully) more referenced/reliable? I want my reliable defensive metrics and I want them now!
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
Kinda depends on the pushes made by
various folks for its inclusion on reference sites. the biggest thing any stat has going for it is ease of availability.

Isn't that kind of a catch-22?
I mean, if more people updated the FSR then it would be more easily available? But since it’s not easily available not many see fit to update it? Do you see it either exploding or dying out any time in the near future? Sorry for all the questions, I just think (perhaps narrow-mindedly) that if thousands of people contributed it could overtake UZR for short-term defensive evaluation.
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
you could pretty easily come out with an FSR fielding metric right now
it’s not that hard to scale those ratings into runs and there are plenty of people voting. UZR apparently reached critical mass, so the time can’t be that far off when people are citing defensive metrics on a regular basis. and if that’s happening, i assume Tango will make the FSR part of the discussion, since it should be. not to mention, he and mgl are kind of the discussion curators for these things.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
I see what you're saying, but...
Well, I was thinking the more eyes on the field the better. If you want to, say, get an idea of how Ichiro was playing his position in 2009, that might be fairly easy since he has 188 votes. But if you’re looking at, for example, Chris Young, with 16 votes last year… well, that gives me SOME indication, but nowhere near the confidence in his overall defensive valuation that 188 (or more, eventually, hopefully) votes would give me. Obviously FSR have flaws, just like UZR (or any stat), but if you hypothetically had a couple thousand people doing a FSR for every major league game, couldn’t you possibly have fairly reliably defensive ratings on rookies a couple months into the season, instead of having to wait three or so years for a large enough UZR sample size?
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
I mean,
so you could walk into a bar and say “man, that Jason Heyward is a beast in right field!” without ever having seen him play. I mean, isn’t that what stats are all about?
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
yeah i get what you mean
the current metric might, for instance, require 30 votes to post an FSR score. and marcels come with an uncertainty index (and systems like CHONE or ZiPS might say they have one that’s implied).
if you’re really interested in pushing FSR yourself, you should email David Appleman, the head dude at fangraphs. actually, you know the fans did project defense too in their fan projections, right? so while no one got a 1000 votes, there were still plenty of them.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
I did not know that.
Thanks. And I’ll consider that, though I’m still a baseball youngster and don’t catch nearly enough games to judge defense. Thanks for your comments.
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
er
you should email him about the presentation. it would be way better if the fans’ projections could be accessed easily and put in a zip file like various other shits on fangraphs.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
Yeah, I'll do that.
Basically, I’m wanting a future where I turn on ESPN or CSN or whatever and a guy is saying, “well, in the the previous three years Player A has been worth 9.2 WAR with his bat alone, what with his .390 wOBA, and according to FSR he’s the best center fielder in his division, so, yes, his contract was worth it.” Or something like that.
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
If 100 people are watching the same first 25 games of a season, how is a fan projection worth any more than UZR
Or if in the first 25 games, 100 voters see 3 or 4 games each, I fail to see how this amounts to some sort of larger sample size.
I imagine that the same problem with UZR applies to FSR in these arguments, that there just aren’t enough plays at each player’s respective position over the course of a year to get as precise and accurate indication of their defensive abilities as you do over larger sample sizes. So what if you have more eyes on the player, if they’re seeing the same thing.
That being said, I imagine that you can get an idea of how well a pitcher can block pitches in the dirt, how well a shortstop fields and throws, and how well a first baseman can “scoop ’em” quicker than other defensive occurrences because they tend to happen more often over the course of a game / season.
It’s taken years of practice to be such an asshole.
by Chiburb on Jun 1, 2010 10:35 AM PDT
It's not a larger sample size per se,
it’s just more fans with different opinions judging the same thing from different angles. UZR doesn’t take into account a fielders positioning, read on the ball, jump, etc. FSR does, and breaks it down by topic. I’m not saying it would necessarily be more accurate, but it would give a better indication of defensive prowess with the same amount of chances than UZR would. Oh, and FSR includes throwing ability, too. Of course, it’s opinion-based, so it’s not perfect, but the more judges of talent the better. I mean, if an outfielder only gets four votes, three being terrible but one being glowing, the one positive vote skews the average toward misleading. So, the more the merrier. No?
"I just want people to remember there's a guy in between these things."
I guess my point is that if all four people watched only one game, and it was the same game, it really wouldn't mean shit to me
I agree that the multiple eyes thing helps, I just don’t think it can be a substitute for the number of opportunities for a certain event.
Perhaps we just disagree on this point.

I like your general optimism and wish I could replicate it in my own mind. It seems, however, that everything is too little, too late. I get the feeling that we’ve seen the worst of Buehrle, Floyd and Peavy, and also that the offense as a whole will improve. But 8.5 games out is a hell of a hole, and even with a small lead in the late innings or down a run or two early on, I have almost no confidence in the Sox pulling it off. If they do, it’s a pleasant surprise, and if they don’t it’s completely expected. That said, if they finish the year at .500 (which I do think is possible), I will be content with having spent so much time watching them. And, for that matter, interacting with you goons for a full season.

Excellent point in the defense para on strand rate
When you say “You can argue that his 4 inning stint vs Cleveland in the Joe West affair helped the Sox to a 2-2 record at Tampa” did you mean it could have been better than 2-2 with a more rested pen? I don’t recall the Danks and Floyd losses being bullpen-aided, so I wouldn’t argue this.
Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game of 2008.
Kinda out of place but...
How about that guy Visquel threw out at 3b last game?? That was a pretty tight vet move. Id say thats about the only reason it’s nice to have a season GG vet like him on the team. Has he played enough games to have an UZR?

Buehrle's contract is pretty much immovable
without the Sox picking up money. A couple of weeks ago Larry said STL was a possible destination but it’s not until the contract expires. Remember, if Buehrle is traded another guaranteed year at 15 mil kicks in……I think.
I guess my opinion is that he is a bit overpaid (probably not horribly).....
but I definitely could be wrong because I am not much with Sabremetrics.
But I do know the Cards aren’t a destination until the contract expires or the Sox picked up a good portion of the deal/he waived the added year.
the escalator isn't enough to
make Buehrle a bad deal. he’s been a 4 win pitcher for his career and he’ll get paid like a 3-3.5 win pitcher for the remaining years on the deal. if you think he’ll pitch without major injury over the next few seasons, then he’s a pretty good pickup for a competitive team.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
He's cheaper than Peavy,
and the Pads moved Peavy last year.
Oh.

outside of injury
i’m not too worried about Peavy going forward. his stuff is there, the control seems to be coming. everything else is luck. and as long as the economy doesn’t submarine, he’ll be paid at or a tick less than what he’s worth thanks to the expected market valuations for wins. he’s being paid like a 4 win pitcher and per 200 IP over the course of his career, he’s been worth it.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
You know, when I was doing the eyeball test
Sunday I sure didn’t come away as confident as you appear. Neither was SM, who (to be a bit redundant) pegged his line almost 100% before the game. It was not in the Cell, either. His command/location looks verkacht. Great stuff, sure. But if he can’t pitch, and is instead throwing, we’re effed.

to be less flippant
i’d say that the eye test isn’t that helpful for these things. guys tend to revert to their norms. i want a good reason peavy won’t. one that amounts to more than “his control was off”. being off for a week or a month or a year doesn’t tell me anything about the why, it just changes the amount of regression i should expect to his previous norms. the why, according to peavy, is a loss of mechanics resulting from the injury. similarly, TJ survivors are well known for getting their control back last. do we completely misproject guys coming back from injury? i guess no. in that case, Peavy’s struggles are probably real but unlikely to last.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
this.
at the risk of repeating what i wrote on this before, it’s rather unlikely that you could sign a pitcher of MB’s pedigree to an approximately 2.5 year deal at $15M per year if he were on the free agent market. maybe you couldn’t get a whole lot in return via trade but, if you really want to dump the salary, it shouldn’t be a problem.
It wouldn't shock me if Buehrle were to waive his escalators to join the Cardinals.
He’s kind of a fan.

i'm kind of suprised by this.
when we traveled in college, we carried on items that were kind of important. glove seems like it would be one of those things. cleats probably, too.
Maybe he likes barefeet?
And he saw Teabag’s playing and figured you didn’t need a glove to play 3b.
Thanks alot for these ridiculous ticket prices, 2005.

Off days on holidays during the season is bullshit. Can we play some baseball please?

I love this movie. Rarely gets in the rotation on cable, sorry I missed it this time around. Plot was a weak scaffold, but the movie has some really powerful imagery. This reminds me of starting 1-5 v Cleveland this year:

Zakes Mokae is quite disturbing. I saw him on the stage for “Master Harold and the Boys”, memorable performance.

you know I was thinking halfway through tonights game...
that maybe, just maybe, this team was relevant.
Then they gave up the lead.
Then they had a chance to get it back, but Kotsay is batting 5th.
Then there was Randy.
This is a bad baseball team.

i know the sox suck, but his pre-game piece didn't read like something meant for sox fans, which, you know, might be the way to go on the chicago site. perhaps he uses all his knob-slobbing abilities on making cubs previews sound optimistic.
also, i hope al is reading this. i hate stats too! information sucks!

they're most important of all chicago sports fans to reach
since they’re the ones with the money.
I'd rather have Rios steal 50 bases than hit 50 home runs. I want production.
actually, being a cubs fan and being a fan of other chicago sports teams is typically not mutually exclusive.

There is also this-baseball-playoffs-also-rans-losers where my optimism is referenced.
Side note. This is before the latest ass kickin from the world beaters known as the Cleveland Indians.
