Kenny has drafted arguably the best players in the CWS finals the past two years

(Beckham and Mitchell) … in 2011 I think Jackie Bradley, Jr would be a nice addition. If he falls to the Sox at #30 :)

Well the show is obviously not going three seasons

and it’s been one of the best shows on TV over its run, so I definitely get you. I don’t think there’s another show out there that even wants to talk about the upside and downside of failure and being a nobody. Maybe Community? Either way, it’s certainly relate-able in a way a lot of shows aren’t for me.

Fireworks: Bang?

by colintj on Jun 30, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not a third season?

I know the guy that plays Henry is leaving, but the rest of the cast could probably carry it. Community deals with failure to a degree, but it’s still a network sitcom, and for the most part compromises are made and everyone’s happy at the end of the show. There need to be more shows featuring real-life situations.

you're right about Community

it takes place after everyone hit bottom and it just so happens that they’re all really good friends and supportive of trial and error. And the show’s producers are clever enough to wink and nod at this aspect of the show, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not, like you say, a network sitcom. Parks and Rec is much the same.

Adam Dunn

I’m probably in the minority here, but I don’t think acquiring Dunn would help the Sox enough for it to be worth giving up one of our few respectable prospects. I think the Sox will either make the playoffs or not based primariy on their pitching. Don’t see how a few extra home runs and tons of extra strikeouts would help the Sox win many games.

What I’d rather see happen is Ozzie just stop playing Kotsay every game just because we’re facing a righty. Batting AJP sixth is enough balance to make sure we never send up more than three righties in a row. I’d rather have a righty like Viciedo/AJones batting 7th or 8th in the DH spot. It would also be nice to see Jones get more than one start per week to see if he can’t get hot again.

by Wayne Nordhagen on Jun 30, 2010 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed. Should've sold high after this first week or two :)

And this is ridiculous. Dunn would make this team significantly better. Enough to get us to the upper 80’s, low 90’s in wins? Doubt it, but he’d be one step in the right direction.

jones

He was arguably our best hitter for a few weeks, then he went cold and Ozzie benched him like he was Lillibridge. Even if he just produces in spurts, it’s better than Kotsay barely producing at all. It is possible that he could be something in between a middle of the order hitter and a last resort bench option. You can’t expect anyone to produce though when they only play once a week.

by Wayne Nordhagen on Jun 30, 2010 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Dunn is paid what he's worth

so he’ll be relatively inexpensive from a prospect perspective. And he’ll instantly be the best hitter on the team. If it goes down by the halfway mark, it would be the equivalent of having signed Thome at the beginning of the season.

the problem

for the white sox, is that they aren’t exactly a buyer’s dream. the selection of prospects is weak. the level of prospect that should get dunn is like a morel plus like an A ball pitcher with upside. problem is that the nationals don’t need a 3B at all. so you then have to offer flowers or a hodge podge of lesser prospects. the former is too much. the latter is not something i’d take from the white sox.

What else would we improve?

Q has decided he’s going to be a major league baseball player again. Our pitching is as good as it’s going to get. Teahen will come back at some point, if Beckham still can’t play, he’ll go to third and Vizquel goes to 2B. Or Viciedo continues to not suck and plays third, in any case the infield isn’t the problem it looked to be a couple weeks ago.

DH is our biggest hole by far, the other problems are relatively manageable with the roster we have. We aren’t getting a new LF or catcher, so that’s out.

Let me break down your reply, and use it against you to argue against your point:
Q has decided he’s going to be a major league baseball player again

How do we know this to be true? He showed some flashes last year, too, before getting hurt and becoming ineffective.

Teahen will come back at some point, if Beckham still can’t play, he’ll go to third and Vizquel goes to 2B

Teahen can not play 3B. He can’t. No, just NO. In your scenario, Teahen plays 3B and Omar plays 2B. By definition, that requires an upgrade.

Or Viciedo continues to not suck and plays third, in any case the infield isn’t the problem it looked to be a couple weeks ago.

Now you may be on to something: Viciedo at 3B. That’s quite a roll of the dice, no? The kid struck out at a ridiculous pace in the minors, and he’s still raw. The best case scenario I can realistically see is he and Omar splitting 3B duty, and that means some combo of Teahen, Beckham, and Omar are playing 2B. Not good.

DH is our biggest hole by far, the other problems are relatively manageable with the roster we have. We aren’t getting a new LF or catcher, so that’s out.

Why can’t we get a new LF or catcher? Putting in Lucy/Castro/Flowers might net us a half win or so over a full season of AJ/Castro, wouldn’t you agree? And why can’t we get a LF? Pierre can go to the bench as a utility OF role that he is more suited to. As for DH, Quentin is our DH. At least, he should be. That means we can use a RF. Dunn is a liability in RF, so he needs to be DHing, but splitting time with he and Q in the field/DH duties would still improve the team.

"...It was then I noticed the burning bus full of nuns, blind people, and small children falling over the precipice into the shark and barracuda infested water below" - U-God

by Shoeless In SC on Jun 30, 2010 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

point to add:
Putting in Lucy/Castro/Flowers might net us a half win or so over a full season of AJ/Castro, wouldn’t you agree?

Disagree. AJ is very likely the best hitter in that group and probably not a bad enough defender for it to matter. The issue is that he’s relatively expensive and replaceable, not that he’s a worse option.

In any case, I don’t see another OF because this team has like 6. Infield and DH is where the help is probably going because it has actual roster flexibility there. Teahen, Pierre, Kotsay and Jones are all OF without much to do. Only Jones doesn’t have less than a mil and a half committed to him.

Fireworks: Bang?

by colintj on Jun 30, 2010 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Your last point.

Is hard for me to swallow, but there it is. You’re likely right. I wish they’d just cut their losses and try to get something for them. Now likely, though. Million(s) invested is a lot to just throw away after getting only a half season from them.

While Kenny is proud, he is bold, and he may say he’s had enough and DFA Kotsay, Jones, and move Pierre. That’d be great, huh?

But I disagree on the catching situation. I think moving AJ and starting the pair of Flowers/Castro/Lucy would net us half a win, give or take, the rest of the way. The defense plays a large part of that, but I’m also high on two of those abilities’ to put together better offense than AJ.

But Ozzie made the decision, and the front office went along with it. So by all acounts they’re all guilty.
