Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Magic? What Magic?

Bobby Jenks blew just his second save of the season, immediately demonstrating a complete lack of feel for the strike zone before being pulled without retiring a batter. Sergio Santos fared no better, walking one before giving up a game-winning RBI single thanks to Alex Rios uncorking a throw that tailed 40 feet up the third base line.

There's plenty of blame to go around after that 9th inning debacle. It was a total team effort.

More importantly, the White Sox have lost 3 straight for the first time since mid-April when they got swept by the lowly Indians. On the bright side, those same lowly Indians just swept the Tigers

Mediocre division foes FTW!

I left after 8 and the watched in horror on my blackberry

He had 2 strikes on 3 of the first 4 batters and couldn’t make a pitch. Did Castro call for breaking balls to see if they’d chase? What a buzzkill.

On the brightside, its amazing a team with this many holes is in first place. And Q! Almost played a whole game! AND we get to see Kenny and Ozzie make asses of themselves on national TV tonight!

I wrote a recap too... I think it was nearly the same uninspired word count. I can't spend any more time thinking about this weekend's baseball. Last weekend was exponentially more fun.

For now, there are slow-cooked meats I must see to eating.
The Sox are on their way here and I hope/plan to bring home some winners this week.

but I do think the characters lost some humanity due to the first 45 minutes of the movie being basically nothing but expository dialog explaining all the rules to the dream world(s).

Let's not Panic

the next 13 games are against Seattle and Oakland. This is a good time to make a 10-3 run or something better.

On the other hand, although this is only Jenks’s second blown save, I have not been all that impressed with him. Is it time to think about Putz as the closer? Thoughts? I don’t know what you do with Jenks—-I don’t think his trade value is that high, but maybe some NL team might bite—-he’s worse in low leverage situations, so he might not really fit well into the role of setup man.

by VAChisox on Jul 18, 2010 5:27 PM CDT reply actions

jenks is fucking horrid

4.9 VORP this year…giving up as many hits+walks per inning as linestink…hes basically a replacement level pitcher right now who is closer because he used to be good at it

Staying Out of White Sox Business

by benlinus on Jul 18, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

think of jenks, the closer, as a blessing

it is bad baseball to have your best reliever only pitch in certain situations in the 9th inning. Thornton and Putz are used in the more important tough late game situations. If you are going to use stats like VORP, you should know that the whole idea of a closer role and saves is ridiculous.

the Twins aren’t a bunch of slackers. You can’t make mistakes/errors like the Sox just did and expect to beat those guys. I don’t expect the Sox to play mistake free, but I believe the past few game were just an aberration and the Sox will get back to playing well.
The offense has come alive and both Beckham and Ramirez are heating up. Relax!

They were on the razor's edge all game.

Freddy was walking on that wire the whole game (great job, Houdini). Pootz was the same. I had a horrible feeling when Pierre failed to squeeze 2x, then DP’ed. Awful.

Even though we lost on a walk-off, it seemed like we were dancing with that devil all day. Losing 3 of 4 at Minny isn’t optimal, but it is not the end of the world. The fact that Morneau was out all series and we still lost 3 of 4 is a little unsettling. But we’ve seen worse and worked through it.

You will look at my bicep and you will see a 20-inch bicep and you will say "Wow, look what this training has done" - that's the obvious. The harder you work, the more you gain, there's no shortcut, and that each time you fail, that you just got to get up and try again. (Arnold Schwarzenegger)

Ozzie - Forget the Bobby must close idea

Why not Santos in the 7th instead of wasting Thornton that early. Then you have Putz for the 8th and Jenks or Thornton for the 9th. In the case of today – You use Thornton as the closer because you make Hudson bat RH and then have him for Mauer and Kubel. Why not take advantage of 2 guys that can close and use them strategically against the other team’s hitters coming up that inning to finish them off. Come on Ozzie – You are lucky enough to have this GIFT – use it !!!

If the Sox play .500 from here on out, they finish with 85 wins and that might be enough right there for the central.

Im a bit worried about the division record but we dont have to worry about that for all of next week. AND the Mariners are starting some guy Pauley who has as many walks as strikeouts(4) in his 9 whopping innings of work instead of Cliff Lee tomorrow.

Maybe Bobby is still stressing out over his old lady. Who knows, but like Metasox said he was lights out just last month. Im not as worried about him as most people here seem to be.

Was alright, but really just brought back the memories of the Thome fiasco, and now we’re basically trying to trade for Jim Thome, as everyone in the world outside of Ozzie Guillen knew we would be.

It’s just unbelievable he can’t see the value of Thome over Mark Kotsay.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 19, 2010 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions

his reasoning is kotsay could play the outfield and 1st base

giving konerko and quentin a chance to DH…. to keep quentin healthy…. which is really dumb because nothing could keep that soft motherfucker healthy

by KenWo4LiFe on Jul 19, 2010 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I know his reasoning, I think it's bullshit.

Konerko doesn’t need to DH that often, he’s not the injury prone, defensive disaster that Q is.
And Q has only DH’d 16 times this year even with Kotsay here, so obviously that isn’t working, the White Sox have faced 19 left handed starters. Considering Thome’s inability to hit left lefties, it seems like it would have worked out well to DH Q everytime they face a lefty, and put Jones or Kotsay in RF (I don’t care which one you cut).

Haven't seen it

I don’t want to take a trip back to the beginning of the season.

The big question is whether the winning streak (s) will get their own episodes, or if the whole thing will be covered in a montage.

If they’re going the montage route, I suggest Sammy Hagar’s “Winner Takes it All”

Shit happens. 3 run 9th inning leads are converted 90% from ANY reliever. Ozzie’s rotation in the 7th, 8th and 9th was fine.

That's why Ozzie should watch and not manage.

That was a hard loss to stomach, but I’m in the camp of Jenks will be fine. (only his second blown save) I also like the idea that maybe this weekend put a little more emphasis to Kenny that there is still work on the phones to be Dunn if this team is going to contend.

Ever see him try to catch a pop up? and on the basepaths he makes Paulie look like Carl Lewis. What’s he hit w/ RISP? Bet it’s not even .250. He hits 500 foot solo homers when they’re up 4 or down 4. 200 K’s a year, maybe? Enjoy.

by RoyEgan on Jul 19, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

career OPS with RISP is 898, and yea his defense sucks

but last time I looked Sox were in the market for DH that could OPS over 700. Going from Kotsay and Jones to Dunn is going to be like going from a 10 dollar tin can grill to The Big Green Egg.

Dunn pretty much OPS’s over .850 in all situations. High leverage can of implies “important”. Not man on 2nd with 2outs in the first inning.

If you want to pick on his batting average be my guess but that has little to do with his offensive production.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 19, 2010 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

sure, take away his defense you got something...

Fangraphs rating for offensive value was 35.5 Runs Above Average in ‘09. His defensive value? 36.3 Runs BELOW Average. So what’s that mean he’s worth — 1.2 Wins a season? Yeah, sounds perfect for the Sox or some other dumb AL team.

by RoyEgan on Jul 19, 2010 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Dumb?

Sounds to me you would get more traction by simply saying he should not be in the field. Cutting his time in half to DH is pretty substantial. Has Thome been irrelevant?

Considering the Sox have a) a HUGE need for a DH and b) are already playing Q the butcher in RF

Dunn makes perfect sense. Let Q ease into the playoffs with 5 starts a week while him and Dunn split time at DH/RF. DFA Kotsay, bring up Morel, send Viciedo back down and call it a day.

can he just jump into it? You don’t know how an everyday guy’s gonna react. Anyway, I’m not averse to adding AD-the 2010 version, but all that on-pace crap is just too unreliable given that there’s another half-season to go. What’s his salary situation?

Last year of his deal.

And he’s been good for numerous seasons, so it’s not on-pace crap that matters, it’s his being a huge left handed bat that enjoys hitting home runs and getting on base that matters.

He’s been traded mid-season before, so it probably wouldn’t be a Rios type struggle to fit in, he’s been through it.

From Twink town
It would appear that Brian Duensing is headed for the Twins rotation, and Nick Blackburn is headed for parts unknown. (Or Rochester.) It seems less likely, then, that Duensing will be similarly supplanted via trade, and so the starting pitching question before the trade deadline becomes something different: what would it cost to upgrade from Kevin Slowey?

Allow me to ignore a few names right off the bat. Roy Oswalt is signed for $16 million next year. Dan Haren is signed for $12.75 million for both next year and the year after. According to John Bonnes, the Twins payroll is already shaping up at about $106 million next year – without Orlando Hudson or Carl Pavano, for starters, or any other free agent that might replace those two. Adding Oswalt or Haren would bump that up into the stratosphere. This seems highly unlikely. (And before you ask, Carlos Silva’s $11.5 million for next year is an absolute non-starter. And it’s also Carlos Silva, who would cause several notable Twins bloggers to commit suicide.)

I knew the payroll had expanded but never really considered it was that high already for next year.

No other club’s postseason hopes have gotten a bigger boost over the past two weeks than those of the White Sox. Here is the look at the top five gainers during that span based on Baseball Prospectus’ Playoff Odds Report:

Team Playoff Odds on 7/4 Playoff Odds on 7/18 Net Gain

Giants 6.3 20.3 14.0
Yankees 73.0 85.5 12.8
Rockies 38.5 46.5 8.3

Despite giving up four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday and losing 7-6 to the Twins, the White Sox are 8-3 over the past two weeks. Carlos Quentin hit .391/.483/1.217 with six home runs in 29 plate appearances during that stretch and Gordon Beckham finally started to emerge from his sophomore swoon by batting .423/.444/.769. John Danks (2-0, 3.60 ERA), Gavin Floyd (2-1, 1.37) and Mark Buehrle (2-1, 2.45) all notched two wins, as did reliever Tony Pena (2-0, 2.25).

I guess Quentin didnt get the memo.

Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''

Theain is the guy I Just can’t stand! pierre is almost as bad,he dose get on base more. If Quntin gets any worse trade him. WE NEED HELP!

yes

I would never Ever have him steal with that injury history

something tells me even the mafia wouldn't call on greg walker if a hit was needed.
