and good for Sergio/Threets?
I didn’t see many balls put in play for Threets. And the ones that were for Sergio didn’t leave the infield.
I went to bed and missed the horror. Were the 3 hits off Jenks line drives or “duck snorts”?

was especially irritating. Jenks didnt give a damn about him on first. Not rockets but they were legit hits.

it was pretty clear he was on top of things. he knew that he could go first to third a couple times and get figgins slow on his break. that’s probably why they were hit/running after he showed that.

Since I posted
I learned that the first hit off Jenks was a bunt single (not exactly good BABIP luck), and recalled that Omar had to leap high to stab a screaming liner to help Sergio get out of a jam not really of his making (which is good BABIP luck).
So maybe not as horrid an outing as Sunday’s blown save/loss. But only one out in 4 batters and poor ability to field his position or (especially) hold runners is still worrying.
Still the eyeball test tells me that Sergio and Threets (!) looked to be in command. Sounds like this was quite untrue for Jenks.

I got sucked into a great pitchers duel, the game was flying by. I thought that once the bullpens came into play, we’d take it home. So not only did I stay up, but my anger wouldn’t let me get to sleep for another half hour. Mercy.

We changed closers midway through the 2005 season and still came out roses !
We can make a closer change midway through this season too.
However, the difference is, in 2005 we had a comfortable cushion and figured we could afford a couple hiccups. This year though, we are in a bleeping dogfight. We CANNOT afford two blown saves this week. Since both the Twins and Tigers are playing bad baseball, this is the time for us to kick it 5th gear and put a 8-game gap between us. Cuz we know Tigers and especially the Twins have a run left in them…….
Changed closers earlier than that in '05: Shingo to Herm was first.

I'm justifiably pissed at Jenks
he easily could’ve cost us the postseason in the past week, but I hope he remains the closer. Obviously he can’t get traded as his ERA makes him look so much worse than he is (do MLB GMs still care about ERA?).
And since closers are stupid, I prefer to have the flexibility of bringing Thornton, Putz, Santos in whenever the situation is right. Closer by committee is okay, since it’s the right think to do always, but players are generally ignorant and prefer things to be done as they always have in baseball, so there are some potential negatives there regarding mood and mindset in the bullpen. These are relatively minor considerations, though. I’m all for a closer by committee, if not that I want Jenks closing still.
An ERA of 5 for a closer is no fluke.
Just as likely a number of his saves were just as “lucky” as his were “unlucky” last night.
Has it ever not been the case for Bobby that if he ain’t throwing 98-99 mph fastballs hits way too many bats? When he has velocity then batters will chase pitches out of the strike zone. Without velocity he’s too “here comes a get me over pitch” pitcher.
Velocity up, velocity down, change speeds with some break away, velocity is what works for him.

His ERA is a fluke
An ERA can be fluky like anything else. Jenks has in fact had more bad luck than usual this year. He walks too many but his underlying stats are fine.

His walk rate is up significantly, which seems to be the biggest problem.
And I guess his line drive rate is higher than it’s been since 2005.
LDs are tough to use to mean much
the two biggest factors are Ks and BBs. next after that is GB%. still a smallish sample.

Jenks is more than solid as a pitcher and I really think he could be stretched out to start so his value will equal or exceed his salary. For a team without much farm depth and a fragile co-ace, keeping Bobby around seems a pretty smart idea.

For someone with a FIP of 2.78, Jenks sure is getting a lot of hate.
Even with these two blown saves, the Sox are still 2.5 games up. The Twins still have Slowey, Baker and Blackburn in their rotation. Things are not that bad.

My Game Story:
Ended up getting the pleasant surprise at work that I would have to drive to Edwardsville (St Louis basically) after work to go attend a hearing for a client of mine that attempted the most piss poor example of a criminal act ever. I finally arrived down south and go to a bar to watch the game, I am immediately given shit by Cardinals fans, I told them they had the game on every other channel and we beat the cubs 4 out of 6 this year. Eventually I go back to the hotel, turn on WGN. We lose power. Power comes back and I watch Bobby blow the game
