PHP: Sox Running Into Trouble?
So I was perusing Baseball Prospectus’ cool baserunning numbers and came across an interesting factoid. The White Sox are second in the league behind Tampa Bay in stolen base opportunities with 138. (Stolen base opportunities: SB + CS + Pickoffs). They’re doing a lot of running, as I’m sure most of you have noticed. This is the year of Ozzieball, after all.
The White Sox have the second most steals of any team in the majors, but are also first in the dubious caught stealing category. So this return to Go-Go Soxdom is costing the team. BP’s stat, Equivalent Stolen Base Runs, has the White Sox 28th in the majors overall with -6.42 runs.
...
Pierre leads the league in opportunities, and has half a run to show for it. For a frame of reference, the top three are Chris Young, Michael Bourn and Chone Figgins. Young’s been worth 2.75 runs. Bourn and Figgins are +2.5 Rios is 10th overall in opportunities and has cost the club a run, as he’s been caught 10 times. Alexei has been caught stealing 6 times in 12 opportunities. For a player who has pretty good speed, he’s far from fully capitalizing on it.
The general sabermetric rule of thumb when it comes to steals is that teams need to have about a 70% or so to just break even. The team is not even breaking even, so far all the running has just had a negative impact.
There’s nothing wrong with trying to wreak some havoc on the basepaths, but it’s better to pick your spots wisely. So far the Sox haven’t done that.

does it take into account (or would it be helpful) to include throwing errors on steal attempts as +2 bases instead of 1?
if the theory is that the SBs put pressure on the defense, then shouldn’t there be some acknowledgement of that occasionally helping?
i’m just thinking that if someone attempts to steal 2nd and the catcher throws the ball away, then the runner has stolen more than 1 base in some ways.

Negligible. You're talking what, five extra bases at most?
Separate question — does WAR factor in SBs and CSs?
shoulda read this before replying

5 extra bases would be negligible? how many attempts are we assuming here? that's a fair amount of advancement.
Cashing checks and having sex. Also doing some light medical diagnoses.
Just to clarify -- you're talking about situations where the catcher throws the ball into CF and the baserunner advances to third, right?
or if the pitcher throws one down the RF line? I can’t imagine that’s happened more than a handful of times this year. Maybe five is too low and you can stretch it to a few more. In any case, if you assume .5 runs per throwing error (not sure if that’s fair or not, but back-of-the-napkin it seems right), you’re talking something like half-a-win.
another factor would have to be hit and runs
they have had some success with this recently, which should add to bases MM is referring to. The CS’s are there when they dont make contact,

I do feel like thanks to the subpar play of Kotsay'dh and some others,
They have a complete inability to protect the plate, resulting in some botched hit and runs.

Harder to hit and run
When the other team is expecting it. Even Kotsay can foul one off most of the time on the hit and run as long as it’s not a pitch out / completely out of the zone.

we should get the guy who has that line since the ASG. and have him in the lead off position.
I'm currently looking for the last White Sox player to post such a low ISO in so many PAs (>400)
at times like this, I wish had bb-ref PI. Anyways, the closest two I found in the last decade were — perhaps not surprisingly — Podsednik in 2005 (ISO of .059) and Willie Harris in 2004 (.061). Pierre is about as punchless as can be. His “hot streak” was exactly as you’d figure — his weakly hit grounders started finding holes.
Juan Pierre is golden... for some reason.
I haven’t heard Ozzie make any pointed remarks about Pierre’s suckatude. Unless his OBP is .350+ what’s the effing point?
by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Jul 25, 2010 10:25 PM CDT reply actions
I figg'rd I'd throw a specific match up in the over-argued Pierre vs. Pods debate...
So Pods hit two out yesterday, giving him 5 ‘fer the season. (I’m going with the theory that since he changed his stance early last season that he made the leap from being abominable to simply shitty in the power department.)
And Pierre is in that unfathomable realm of big league regulars who project for fewer HR’s on the season than your average NL starting pitcher.
Now Pods plays defense like he’s wearing uncomfortable women’s underwear.
While Pierre has been a rag-armed dazzler in LF this year.
… So which is more frustrating coming from your LF/“leadoff” position?
Impossibly weak power or quadriplegic defense?
Paying Pierre 10 million over two years, and giving the Dodgers anything of value
Is more frustrating than paying Pods 1.75 million. Watching Pods get caught stealing all the time with bad defense isn’t very fun either, but at least it was a cheap one year deal.
It’s almost as bad as thinking that it would be smart to go into the season with Mark Kotsay as your DH.
The worst thing about the White Sox problems, is that they weren’t made because they couldn’t afford a better option, or that there was a lack of alternatives. It was a conscious decision to be bad at baseball. That is what is most frustrating.
When you go into a season, and your plan for success revolves around your pitching staff covering up the holes you’ve made on purpose, instead of just cheaply filling those holes, you’ve probably had a bad offseason.

Assuming it’s correct, 8 million over two years, not 10, so I was off a bit. Still a lot more than Pods makes, which was the point though.

His name is Rios and he dances on the sand
Ironic. I brought this up with a buddy this weekend and reminded him of the baserunning section
of May Review.
52 sbs and 22 caught stealing for a 70% conversion rate. That is headed in the wrong direction and is becoming counterproductive. Here is the real problem though. Compare the White Sox speed with Tampa. In addition to the Rays having more steals and less times caught they both have negative overall SB scores. Most teams do. However the Rays have extremely high hit and misc advancement opportunity scores. They also don’t make dumb outs. It’s things like that helping them to a team score of +5.7 instead of a negative.
June’s Baserunning review
Of the -5.9 team score -4 of it is the stolen base component. There is no doubt the overall team speed is better than past years but as we feared the stolen base has become a negative. There are only so many legitimate hitters on this team any and they cannot afford to give away outs. Slow down Ozzie. In June they were 20 out 34. That’s ridiculous. Also puzzling is the negative hit advancement score. I thought that was the whole point of no Thome? The real fear is that after crushing the National League the Sox “forget” they play in the AL and don’t adjust their style. Kotsay is not fast. It doesn’t matter what angle he takes rounding the bag.
That gap continues to grow and Larry pretty much just gave me July’s.

Attention, Fukudome shoppers: Source says #Cubs would pay part of $4M-plus left this year and “quite a bit” of $13.5M salary next year. #MLB

Would not mind.
Would not love, but would not mind, either. Walker’ll fix ’em.

I would rather have Fukudome in right with some sort of actual DH.

If you believe WAR, Fukodome has only been half-a-win better than Pierre this year
seems pointless to me. I’d do it if it’s Teahen + Pierre for Fukodome, but i doubt the Cubs do that.
so youd be in favor of this too?
if the dunn thing doesnt work out, that is?
i’m gone... bye bitches. - wtgtd
if they ate enough money
I’d be in favor of it.

He figures to be worth around $8 MM (assuming close to 2WAR)
He is due $13.5 MM. If the Cubs ate half, I’d do it.
Pierre7, Vizquel5, Rios8, PK 3, Q 9, Kotsay dh, AJ2, Ram 6, Beckham4. Danks pitching.

you used to (i.e. up to this year) be able to get around it via proxies, but they may have caught wise to that
gave me fits trying to set it up during cubs-sox FOX game, eventually punted and just listened to the streaming audio and threw enhanced gameday on the tee vee.
These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

The only way I install something that a web site like that asks me to is if I'm trying to get more porn.

FYI, the Sox game is MLBAB's freebie of the night.
Don’t know if that helps in Iowa or not.
