if they don't make this trade

i think they’ve done a pretty good job of showing their lack of confidence in hudson. in that case, good luck tonight, kid.

if hudson is gone who starts tonight? harrell?

also, do you really think the lack of confidence they are showing is really that damaging?

as for damaging, who knows.

i’d find it kind of hard to concentrate on preparing for my start if i’m hearing that i may be on a plane to arizona or washington or milwaukee or houston or wherever tonight. not to mention if that trade is for a starting pitcher. or maybe he’s a chip on his shoulder guy.

I’d say it’s worth finding out what we have in him.

by Jack M on Jul 30, 2010 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

i agree with CC's take on this
Both Rosenthal and Cowley are leaning in the direction of this being a move in which the Sox would bolster their rotation, but it’s worth noting (as Rosenthal does before playing it down) that the Nationals have been rumored to want Edwin Jackson for weeks now, and they happen to have one Adam Dunn, who the Sox want.

I understand that the Sox are in a playoff race and don’t really trust Daniel Hudson right now, but Edwin Jackson — no hitter notwithstanding — is no great shakes himself. He’s got a 5.16 ERA, has a WHIP of 1.49 and leads the league in wild pitches for cryin’ out loud. If the Nats are still at all interested in the guy, it seems almost criminal to not try to flip him for Dunn.

And if it really is pitching you want, aren’t there any better available options than Edwin Jackson?

This is like having Marshall Faulk on your fantasy football team in 2000 and screwing up the rest of your draft to finish 7th.

Dislike.

Even if flipped for Dunn, who is the new 5th starter? Another move would have to happen for this to make sense.

If the Sox just truly want Edwin Jackson that is a bad move too. I have not had a chance to look at his numbers in depth yet in Arizona but a 5+ ERA in the NL is telling. He had a great 1st half last season and went to crap right after.

I trust that Coop can work with Jackson...

….but he’s going to need time, something that you don’t necessarily have when the Twins are breathing down your neck. For the time being, is Jackson that big of an upgrade over Hudson? Not sure what Baltimore’s stance is on trading Scott/Guthrie, but I can’t imagine their demands are going to match Washington’s. I’m not a Guthrie fan, but he’s solidly unspectacular and you’d get your LH power bat too. Honestly though, I don’t think we need to add a hitter.

by rmensch on Jul 30, 2010 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

You don't think we need to add another hitter???

This is the team that trots out Andruw Jones and Mark Kotsay. How can we not need another hitter?

by Grinder in Training on Jul 30, 2010 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Those two blow but..

Pitching will win this thing. This team is 2005 scrappy. I’d rather see us add a pitcher. What if Freddy starts to slip. Then we have three or maybe two reliable starters down the stretch.

by rmensch on Jul 30, 2010 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

…Jones can still play D and run decently well. And Ozzie is in love with Kotsay. Thome never won us a World Series. Dunn is a younger version of Thome.

What?

Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Floyd = Big 4 going forward.

This year, there’s less than 10 starts left for the 5th starter anyways, and really only use the first 3 in the playoffs.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 30, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't care about next year yet...I guess your confident in the starting rotation as it stands minus Hudson.

Buehrle, Danks, Floyd, Garcia and who? I guess if they go 4 man rotation it might work out. Just worried that the way it is going with the Twins right now, the Sox may have to sweep the red sox and indians in the final week of the season just to take the division. very hard to do with Garcia and ? rounding out the starting staff.

Mark Teahen peed in my canteen.

by SavePeavytill2010 on Jul 30, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Any 5th starter won't have much of an influence on the rest of the season.

Especially when the drop off is just from Dan Hudson. A big bat would make more of a difference, and we’d obviously sign some veteran, so the drop off would probably be negligible for this year.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 30, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

You have to factor in who Ozzie would sit for said good hitter though

We would all look at Kotsay and say grab some bench.
Ozzie might say that to Q and we would basically be in the same boat.

Also, Viciedo could have used a few more major league swings

When it became obvious that Kotsay had nothing. Yet, Ozzie kept putting him in there so my thought isn’t exactly baseless.

I know we would be talking about an established hitter here, but I don’t put it past Ozzie to play his man.

by justjc on Jul 30, 2010 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

With Viciedo, My theory is that Ozzie may have been protecting his trade value

He was putting him in in positions where he was highly likely to shine and hid his flaws so he would appear more appealing to trade partners.

After the deadline if he is not traded, I would expect him to be pushed more, but I have no basis for that.

by joewho112 on Jul 30, 2010 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

My theory is Ozzie is a douche bag

So it is hard for me to think Ozzie would be that clever. I also think Viciedo played well enoguh to deserve more chances so Ozzie’s plan is either working or he is indeed, a douche bag.

Meh

I’m okay with trading for Jackson if he’s part of a big deal to get Dunn or something, but otherwise giving up Hudson to get Jackson is just dumb. I see no reason to think Jackson is any better than Hudson except one likely fluky season with the Tigers where he was pretty awesome, but he’s regressed this year and his numbers are awful.

If this is the deal for Dunn, I can’t understand why they wouldn’t want Hudson over Jackson, and I’m worried this deal might totally empty our minor league system. Which is what we do, I guess.

Obligatory: We wouldn’t have to be “cooking something big” if we had just signed Jim Thome for twenty bucks.

All this crap because they decided having a DH that could field was important. Look, it’s possible Keith Law is right and Hudson blows and will continue to blow. But trading him for $8M walk machine Edwin Jackson?

If Jackson isn’t flipped it assures that one of Danks or Floyd gets traded this offseason, because they can’t have that much $$ in the rotation.

If Jackson is flipped then the rotation is screwed. It probably already is since they already have to hope Freddy’s arm doesn’t fall off.

In any case the Sox are going rip a bunch of young talent out of their system and pay more $$ because Thome isn’t an outfielder. Jackasses.

"You’re a cunt, but i’ve got ethics." - U-God

by justjc on Jul 30, 2010 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure I see GIDPs

I also see guys that can get on base without needing 2 more hits to drive them in. I also see hitters that aren’t automatic outs against lefties. It’s just not about Kotsay who sucks but also about Andruw Jones that can spell Quentin in right and still give you 14 HRs in limited action. We could just as well be in second place with Thome at DH. We don’t know what the outcome would’ve been. All I know is that we are in first place and one of the best hitting teams in baseball since the All-star break.

by Dils on Jul 30, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, it really is just about Kotsay who sucks

We could have Thome instead of Kotsay. A guy who’s good instead of a guy who sucks.

And since when does Kotsay get on base in order to be driven in by a single? His OBP is .305. He barely gets on base at all! Thome’s at .393. You’d rather have a marginally faster guy on base less often?

And not an automatic out against lefties?

Kotsay has a .000/.105/.000 line against lefties this year. Zero hits! If that’s not an automatic out, what is? Thome’s at .220/.278/.380. Not great, but still exponentially better than Kotsay.

You really think it's Berkman?

He’s got a vested no-trade clause. Which means 99% certain he’ll shoot down any trade where the 2011 option doesn’t get exercised. I don’t see how Sox would agree to that.

6 years/$85M (2005-10), plus 2011 club option
signed extension with Houston 3/05, replacing 1 year/$10.5M contract for 2005 signed 1/05, avoiding arbitration ($11M-$10M)
05:$10.5M, 06-10:$14.5M annually, 11:$15M club option ($2M buyout)

I am become q, fragile headcase

by ChicagoPete on Jul 30, 2010 11:39 AM CDT reply actions

All that is irrelevant

The only thing that matters is the 11 option left. 15 million is steep. Could Berkman play to his contract next year? Probably. My guess is the Sox want Houston to eat a bit of it.

Houston ate $11 million of Oswalt's contract...

BtB's take
Well, this trade is definitely going to need its own post.

Jackson’s inconsistency and lack of command will always hold him back, it seems. But right now he’s flashing a strong 51% groundball rate along with good whiff and contact rates, so there’s a lot to like about Jackson beyond one of the hardest fastballs among starters in all of baseball.

Jackson gives the White Sox a small upgrade over Hudson through 2011, although I’m not convinced that it’s enough to forfeit Hudson’s extra years of team control. ZiPS projects Hudson to put up a 4.06 FIP for the rest of the season, compared to a 4.16 FIP for Jackson. I think that alone says a lot about how close these guys are in terms of performance. And when one guy is owed about $10M through 2011 before hitting free agency and the other guy isn’t even arbitration-eligible yet, I think you need a lot more than a slight upgrade to justify making that kind of deal.

I don’t really like this deal for the White Sox. Holmberg’s nothing special, really, but I’m not really convinced that Jackson is some sort of big upgrade on Hudson. It just feels like the White Sox just committed to spending around $10M through 2011 on a pitcher that’s not much better than the one he’s replacing.

As for Arizona, it’s a solid deal. They get another young starter to slot into their rotation, although the lack of top-of-the-rotation upside there is fairly worrisome. I’m not too sure how exciting, or productive, a 1-2-3 of Joe Saunders, Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson is going to be. Hopefully they use all that money they’ve saved the right way.

God, I just went through the whole thread in hopes that the bottom of it looked something like this

I couldn’t handle Jackson if it meant giving up Hudson.

But I sure could enjoy something like this.

Still worried about that 5th starter

Arizona White Sox

At what point should the AAA team just move from Charlotte to Arizona, so that when they make their yearly trade with the D-backs they don’t have to go very far?

by gocolts1 on Jul 30, 2010 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

I'm confident that whatever we don't address, Be it the DH or the back of the rotation

that there will be quality, if overpaid quality available on the waiver wire in August.

The trade season is radically different in a bad economy.

I'm assuming KW is not stupid

If it was Jackson to DC and Dunn to the Sox to begin with he would have done a three way deal to begin with.

If he wants to keep Jackson as an upgrade to Hudson, and considering the difference in salary and years under control, I’m thinking that they see something in Jackson on the upside and Hudson on the downside that we doofusses out here don’t.

i only recall Beckham getting the ’you’re safe’ from Kenny…

by Andronicus on Jul 30, 2010 12:51 PM CDT reply actions

We're not trading for Jones

If you want Jones in RF you don’t have to make a trade…or am I missing something here.

Q as DH = Dunn as DH.

by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Jul 30, 2010 1:08 PM CDT reply actions

you are missing:

1) Q won’t DH (he’s a nut job)
2) Q is injury prone (this may well be a sell high moment)
3) Dunn at DH > Q at DH

by Andronicus on Jul 30, 2010 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Q as full time DH

is never gonna happen with the Sox. just my opinion.

by Andronicus on Jul 30, 2010 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think so

1) Ozzie wants Q to DH then Q will DH (Ozzie’s a nuttier job)
2) Q is injury prone – that is correct
3) Dunn coming over to the AL and a new team = who knows?
4) Dunn FA at the end of the year

So I think you got one right – and let’s end this now and see what really happens.

by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Jul 30, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

And how, exactly, does this move help?

Short term? Long term?

I’ll go back and read the above posts, but I recall that the hype of Edwin Jackson much surpassed his performance.

As far as I can tell, Hudson has been more or less what was expected, an average 5th starter so far…but he has what looks to be a good ceiling and a nice career…and he’s cheap.

In summary, what the hell was KW thinking?

It’s taken years of practice to be such an asshole.

Jon Garland redux

I’m thinking the Jon Garland type of pitchers – Hudson included – inning eating sinker ballers are not highly thought of by the Sox management team. They prefer more power and flash.
