With our fielders throwing the ball with their eyes closed...

It’s no wonder they got so many errors

Quentin...

Unless his leg is broken, why isn’t he at least DH?

How is this team winning?

by TrickyDickAllen on Jul 8, 2010 1:04 AM CDT reply actions

Because he's very breakable

And we need him to be good to have a chance, so we don’t want him favoring one leg while he plays or swings the bat, leading to a worse injury.

I'm probably close to 200 by now.

One of the reasons I’m so passionate about this right now is there seems to be this assumption by many baseball fans that other players are doing better than Konerko without even doing the research. Here is an exact quote from one of my old college friends on facebook… “Though I like Konerko, You can’t deny that Youk has had a better year”

Yes I can. Youkilis might have a higher OBP and SLG, but Konerko has more RBIs and homeruns. East coast bias can suck my nuts.

Someone like Thomas shouldn’t be kept out over something seemingly insignificant. What is interesting about that quote isn’t that Wells shot his mouth off. As crazy as it sounds, one name that could be worth exploring is Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs would love to get rid of him, and he’s friends with Guillen. If the Sox would eat some of his existing contract, why not explore it?

even though zambrano is a pitcher with declining skills, i would have no problem with the sox adding Z for depth and insurance should freddy or hudson not pan out in the second half.

how much would the cubs have to chip in on the remaining years to make it a viable option for the sox?

75% of his salary or more

But it is not a bad idea. He grew up a Sox fan, and it does fit in with Kenny’s “Island of Misfit Players” philosophy.

Ozzie needs to tell him that the shit he’s pulled will not fly on the south side, just as Hawk told AJ to cut the crap before he signed with the White Sox.

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Jul 8, 2010 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I think a meltdown on the South Side

Is not nearly as big a thing. He would have a lot less pressure here, and a manager he obviously gets along with well.

The problem is though, he’s been awful this year. It’s not like he’s been good and a jackass. Even if he was a good guy, the Cubs would still have to pay 75% of that contract based on what he’s done this year.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 8, 2010 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Well I agree that he would have less of a tendency to meltdown here.

But I’m still going to be pissed off if I see him yelling at Paulie or Visqel. But he’s usually a solid pitcher, and assuming the Cubs paid 75%ish, I think it’d be a gamble worth taking.

Thanks alot for these ridiculous ticket prices, 2005.

Good news and bad news

Peavy out for the year, but it seems like he should be able to recover from this. From Will Carroll:

Jake Peavy (strained lat, 10/4)

Not just strained, but detached. That was the piece of info that took this from being bad news for Peavy and the White Sox to being the worst-case scenario. Peavy has pulled the muscle out at the insertion. That’s the point where it connects to the upper arm, as seen here. It’s not the best comparison, but if you’ve ever broken down a chicken, this is very similar, though obviously there’s a size (and species) difference. It’s the same kind of muscles and tendons that are pulled apart when taking the wings off before adding the delicious sauce. Peavy will in all likelihood need surgery to reattach the muscle. He’ll get a second opinion, maybe more, but doctors and therapists I spoke with said a complete detachment of this type can’t heal on its own. This detachment is what differentiates this strain (and yes, it’s still a strain; a detachment is just a specific kind of rupture, which itself is a complete strain) from the ones suffered by other pitchers, such as Brad Penny, Josh Beckett, and Ben Sheets. They had strains in the “belly” of the large muscle rather than at the thinner, weaker point nearer the arm. The cause is unknown and probably always will be. SBNation quoted me early in saying this was Don Cooper’s fault, but that’s not what I meant at all. In changing anything about a pitcher’s delivery, there can be consequences, just as if a pitcher instinctively changes something to compensate for an injury. That’s why it’s so tough to see a pitcher with terrible mechanics but good results; even a small change might change things for the worse. The pitcher has done this for such a long time that his body, even his bones, have adjusted to that specific motion. The question now becomes whether or not Peavy can come back at all. There are no comparables for this. Again, I went to my doctors and therapists, who think that he can come back. “It’s not a cuff,” said one ortho, “and putting the muscle back in place isn’t difficult. It’s an anchor. last night seemed electric. im sure it had something to do with the fact that listening to a scratchy barely audible score broadcast some 500 miles away, sitting in the whip in front of the house with a sixer of tallboys, but nonetheless when el capitan stepped up and was at a 3-0 count and the crowd chanting Paulie, PAulie, PAUlie, PAULie, PAULIe, PAULIE…well that was just awesome, then for him to produce was perfect…

help me with the math

Peavy had 1.8 WAR for his half season of work.

Hudson is projected at right about 1.0 WAR for 77 IP.

If Hudson performs as projected looks like the CWS lose one victory with Peavy going down, meh big deal. IMO Peavy was all hat no cattle anyways, I wasn’t overly impressed considering how much money he’s stuffing in his mattress.

The problem is if another pitcher goes down we be in big trouble. Plus you can’t trade Hudson for Dunn either, so there’s that opportunity cost.

I think the point is

If we were going to get into the playoffs with Peavy, we probably needed more than the 1.8 WAR he posted in the first half. Now we need Hudson, not to match Peavy’s first half, but perform at whatever level Peavy would have needed to in order to make the playoffs.

by CatBrains on Jul 8, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

We really don't know

First of all I expect the offense to actually help in the 2nd half.
Secondly it remains to be seen how well the rest of the starters and staff continue to perform. I doubt Hudson needs to do better than 1.8.

"Officially off strike...."

by Tdogg on Jul 8, 2010 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

that's my feeling too

Peavy wasn’t that dominant. As long as Hudson doesn’t do a Beckham imitation the drop off shouldn’t be that severe if the other starters stay healthy – big if.

"But this streak goes to eleven"

by ChicagoPete on Jul 8, 2010 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I won't go that far.

Peavy had been pretty dominant recently. His May 8/1 k/bb ratio was fantastic and June was very good too. Its more about the performance of the staff in general. Put it this way. If they continued at anywhere close to that pace they would probably not only win the Central but comfortably. No one expects them to continue it though.

"Officially off strike...."

by Tdogg on Jul 8, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm looking at his entire body of work for the season

if you want to point at his May 8/1 you can’t just turn your back on his April. What we did get out of him was 1.8 WAR, which ranks him 19th of 57 SPs in the AL.

He wasn’t having a Cliff Lee season, and the Sox are one game out of first when he goes down. Would it have been nice to get ace stuff out of him for the second half, of course it would. But if we get lucky and Hudson pitches as per projections that should be good enough to stay in the race. I like our chances plugging him in a lot better than let’s say Dan Wright, Felix Diaz, or Jason “the Grillmeister” Grilli.

Pete you can't ignore his WPA during that time frame

when they were you know like “winning” games. You said he wasn’t dominant. I said for the last couple month he was. Its hard to ignore how he was pitching, not what he did in April before adjustments. I don’t remember his exact number at the end of April but I’m sure it was negative by a decent margin.

I do like JP's LF defense

neglecting the arm, which I hadn’t noticed to be problematic too many times. The range and glovework though has been very refreshing, especially during this run, and considering the horror we had there with Pods.

But the 40 runs scored for the leadoff position (reflecting the low OBP to an extent) is too low I think.

Not following Ely that closely lately, but even if he’s sucked lately, his numbers don’t look all that bad (but SSS perhaps).

Will's take on Peavy

It’s not like there’s multiple structures or ways to do it really.” A physical therapist put it more succinctly: “If a nail comes out of your wall, you hammer it back in place. That’s all this is.” We’ve seen players come back from detached muscles before. The one that immediately comes to mind for me is the dreadful image of Dean Palmer’s biceps strain. The muscle retracted, visibly rolling up his arm as he screamed in pain. I’m glad that’s not on YouTube. Peavy is looking at a significant rehab and most likely his season is done. When he might be back on a mound remains to be seen.

I definitely want that bat

The offense has moved up to 9th in wOBA and are only a stone’s throw away from 7th in the AL. They have probably been an average AL offense since June. I thought it was interesting in reading Btb they have almost executed the fantasy strategy of Stars and Scrubs to a tee. lol.

by Tdogg on Jul 8, 2010 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

i'd be a bit more cautious than that.

projections for players with little major league experience inherently have higher margins of error. perhaps there are no growing pains. on the other hand, even elite pitching prospects can have trouble adjusting. non-elite ones moreso. hudson’s inability to pitch as many innings as peavy would will also inevitably expose the softer underbelly of the bullpen.

by larry on Jul 8, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a good point

I don’t want to get crazy. The innings argument is a little worrisome and bears watching. Of course some of that could be taken care of if our manager didnt feel the need to use 4-5 relievers at a time when its not needed…

Im a bit more optimistic because Hudson did get at least a 1/2 year of AAA

For me

(and it’s heresy probably for the sabre-heads here) I worry about the “intangibles”. Despite my – let’s call it alignment with – the Peavy as “all hat no cattle” sentiment, I think he was a vital – maybe the KEY – part of the starting rotation awakening that has powered this run. It sure looked to me that once things started rolling, ALL of the starters (save Freddy-of-miracles) emerged from a funk at once, all seemingly energized by the performance of their respective peers.

Yes I know it might be coincidental synchronized regression to the mean. And/or the ending of a bad BABIP luck period in some cases. And yes there seems to have been a similarly timed renaissance to the overall team defense during this run that obviously benefits all of the pitching performance.

But it sure seems like Peavy has been (at least for public consumption) acting every part of the leader as befits the lofty salary. And his loss now seems problematic to me in that regard.

Or is this why its used as a companion to the more static PECOTA odds?

His name is Rios and he dances on the sand

Yes to your second statement

that’s exactly why they give both. As far as regression and strength for expected wins etc. refer to their 3rd order w/l record for a snapshop.

Of course 3rd order wins and championships don’t mean squat at the end of the day. Ask the 03-04 Sox or the 05 Indians how it worked out.

ELO is current state heavy which is why it can change quickly.

How about Viciedo showing some leather

in the 2nd? Nice play I thought

Excellent. Best so far IMHO.

Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game of 2008.

pauliewood campaign

I think I’m too pissed about the Rios snub to commit time to voting for Paulie. PK is deserving, but it’s hard to make a case for him making it over the first basemen that were selected. There’s no way Jose Bautista or Vernon Wells should have been selected over Rios. And then to put FNS on the vote-in ballot over Rios is just ridiculous. Rios must have done something to make him ineligible for this year’s game that wasn’t reported. That’s all I can figure out.

the player's vote

Should be taken away then if that’s the best they can do.

think about it

they probably looked at a stat sheat for a couple seconds and then just filled in the box for bautista, I don’t believe the players would take too much time thinking about their choice

I'm more surprised how extensively the Rangers and Tigers fan bases have come out of the woodwork

to vote for these players. Teagarden… Laird… lol.

So...will Kenny be buying?

If so, who?

Word on the street is that Adam Dunn would cost you J. Danks and/or Hudson and Prince Fielder is looking for “Ryan Howard money.”

Could you imagine how many dingers either of those guys would hit at The Cell?

Ernie Hudson, perhaps.

What kind of a package would it take to

get Jayson Werth vs. that for Dunn? Basically the same?

guess it is based on whether they can catch ATL

I know that Werth is the better player, but I would still rather have Dunn

And force Ozzie to use a dh already. If we get Werth, Ozzie will still make him sit for stints of Kotsay, Jones and Quentin, even though Qperman should just slide over to DH and Kotsay should grab some bench. (Jones DFAed)

I highly doubt the Sox could get Werth as I doubt the Phillies front office would be stupid enough to trade him

and I’m really uncertain as to what would count as equal value for his services, but I think it would be more than the Sox can give up at this point.

It’s taken years of practice to be such an asshole.
