i don't understand why the twins would trade inside their own division.

is this part of that “competitive balance” thing mandated by major intergalactic baseball? if bud selig xxiv really wanted to do something about that, he’d break up the twins. he’s just like his great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather.

Peter Gammons on The Score

Says Lee to Yankees is all but done, and that the Sox have the inside track over the Angels on Dunn.

Theain is the guy I Just can’t stand! pierre is almost as bad,he dose get on base more. If Quntin gets any worse trade him. WE NEED HELP!

Lee to the Yankees

Would be better than the Twins I guess. Besides the obvious positives of us playing better putting us back in the race, it could force the Tigers or Twins to give up some prospects they don’t want to, now that we’re a player in this thing.
Considering our farm system, it’d be nice if they overpaid for a guy and depleted theirs a bit too

Us sweeping the Angels could either make them desperate or let them know they don’t have the hitting to make it worth it to trade for Dunn. 5.5 back now, and the way their fans are talking, they sure don’t seem to think just Adam Dunn could solve their problems.

Did Gammons comment on what the Sox would give up for Dunn?

Everything I’ve heard is that the Nats want pitching, and since we need Hudson in the rotation now, he’s obviously off the table (and should have been all along). But what does that leave? Torres?

by Ryno on Jul 9, 2010 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Why won't Kenny just trade for a bat. The pitching isn't the problem anymore. Yet the offense still is.

Placing all of our hopes into a rotation with Hudson and the elusive acquired “bat” is better than placing our hopes into our rotation with Lee and this offense

IMO, at least.

Well it's not like we can only trade for one guy

It doesn’t make sense not to at least inquire about the best free agent available. They can tell us to fuck off and then we call the Nationals back up and ask what flight Dunn can get on.

peavy only has an effect on 1/5 games.

assuming hudson is serviceable…. there won’t be that much difference between the two. Have you seen the teams hudson is going to face? I’m pretty sure he will do well. As long as we dont lose another starter…. and as long as the bullpen keeps being good…. we will wrap up the division with plenty of time to spare.

by KenWo4LiFe on Jul 9, 2010 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

peavy affects more then that

by providing more innings thus sparing bullpen usage. even the perceived idea of peavy eating more innings then hudson will affect ‘pen usage as you’ll want to save TPena for backing up Hudson.

its small, but shouldn’t be ignored.

i've been saying for a while that the nice situation for the sox right now is that they are so easily upgradeable.

so they can look for the best bat available regardless of where he plays.
when that happens, i’ll reassess the race.
in the meantime, i think losing peavy is gigantic to a team that still has to pay him big bucks this season and has a terrible offense.

losing peavy only widens that gap. i wasn’t quite as impressed with the tigers but this probably solidifies an advantage to them.

of course, over 81 games, i’m not sure the gap between the teams is enough to say anyone has an overwhelming advantage. the “luck”, “error” or whatever factor probably puts this essentially in a dead heat range in terms of advantage. can probably ascribe 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3 as the probability to each team and be about accurate.

What is more worrisome is now Freddy is the 4th starter.

by madvillian on Jul 9, 2010 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

This.

Before the Peavy injury, we could assume that if/when Freddy turned into a pumpkin, we could replace him with Hudson and not suffer much.

Now we have to assume we are replacing him with Torres or suffering through some bad performances.

Agreed.

Not even performance-wise, because Peavy laid down plenty of turds early on – hence 4.63. But Peavy averaged almost a full IP per game more than Hudson. Somebody has to eat those innings, and his name, I fear, is Scott Linebrink.

That said, we’re still gonna wing dis ting.

Hudson’s work with the Knights translates to a 4.51 big league FIP, with 8.7 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 1.2 HR/9. CHONE’s updated rest-of-season projection for Hudson is similar — a 4.60 neutralized ERA, with 7.9 K/9, 3.7 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9

A chance to get a potential offensive juggernaught of a player like Montero doesn’t come often, and even less so when you consider how weary heavy-hitting free agents probably are of playing in Seattle.

Initially I was going to agree, but that might be selling Montero short

http://twitter.com/ed_price/status/18145177954

I had a feeling things would escalate, but I didn’t think the Rangers would offer Smoak. Then again, Montero is three years younger, arguably has more offensive potential and just about MLB ready. I’m not sure Smoak has the ability I used to think he had. Depends on the supporting cast, but it sounds as if Texas is willing to offer more than New York overall.

don get me wrong, i know not to call the return of focus on defense and stopping the run a “comeback”, nor am i saying that i wouldnt like lee on the mound for us rather then against us, but are we and the sox confident that the current offense can put up just enough runs to win those games? are the boys considered in their groove, and only expected to show only small slumps leaving little overall regression to rear its ugly head?

loosing peavy sux, but the major problem before his absence was the bats/rotating dh/outfield experiment…which problem weighs more? i think that since you cant win a game with out scoring, the sox should role the dice with hudson, and put their resources/our ticket costs to purchasing dunn or another run producing utility.

Finally! A Lebron piece I agree with:

The most extraordinary part of the event was the reaction of Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert, who responded with a venomous, face-saving personal attack on the team’s Web site that, in its own way, validates James’s decision to leave Cleveland.

In an amazing abdication of leadership — and a remarkable revelation of a flawed character — Gilbert made James a sympathetic figure.

Referring to a "shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own," Gilbert called James’s decision process "a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with the national TV special of his ‘decision’ unlike anything ever ‘witnessed’ in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment."

Yet it was Gilbert who created the King James monster; it was Gilbert who nurtured and reinforced James’s prima-donna-isms, all of the preening and dancing. Now he acts like a lover scorned and lashes out with gibberish about karma and curses.

Gilbert must think he really owned LeBron James.

it wouldn’t be hard to salary dump deng to create cash for all 3 guys to make similar to what they’re making now.
and the supporting cast is already in place.
it really makes me wonder if bulls ownership’s rep is as bad as some people say it is.

They're never going to give details, and I'm inclined to believe Wade just made a great push that resonated with LeBron.

I don’t know what to make of Gar Forman, he seems somewhat intelligent. But, John Paxson should have been fired months ago, or let him resign due to “personal issues.”

these guys saw how the bulls treated the dynasty...

How Paxon went from commentating to GM
How BJ got screwed then fired
How Pippen was underpaid (considering)
How JR let Krause break the team up
Why doesn’t Scottie have a job with the bulls?
They let Jordan go to the Wizards? Really?

Plus, they probably told him “no headbands and no entourage” he got up shook their hands and got on the horn with Riley.

The way this thing has all played out, I’m glad we didn’t get any of those guys. I hope they all fail.

One factor is that this is most likely Wade's last big contract

Given his age, injuries and the nature of his game, he might have not have felt that he could pass up the extra money that Miami could give him especially given his divorce.

But I have absolutely nothing to back this up.

Our state tax is only 3%

He’s bound to make more than 3% difference here or the 8% difference in New York from marketing revenue playing in a much bigger city as the star of a team vs. being second fiddle in a shit sports town.

I don't get the bigger city = more endorsement deals argument when it comes to someone like Lebron.

He has massive deals already in place with every major potential endorser and is already a massive international star. It’s not like he going to do local car dealership commercials or replace the late Empire Carpet guy. I don’t see him becoming any more famous/valuable by moving to Chicago/NYC.

rhoden comparing James to Flood and Ali is a slap in the face of those guys

leave it to rhoden to come out with the “this is the pinnacle of the black athlete’s emancipation” piece after this farce.

After living in NYC the past 4.5 years, I can say without a doubt that Rhoden produces a column worth reading about once a month. He’s a more highbrow version of Jason Whitlock.

Sorry, I find his piece as farcical as James’ actions leading up to his decision. To argue that this is a great moment for black athletes is silly, wrong, and completely misses the larger point about how this has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the de-evolution of the contemporary stuperstar athelete.

I really thought Lebron had that Jordan like tenacity in him, now I just think he’s another athlete that took the easy way out.

by madvillian on Jul 9, 2010 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

"Officially off strike...."

by Tdogg on Jul 9, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

This [Lebron’s announcement] was reminiscent of Muhammad Ali, at least in terms of showmanship and the ability to command a global stage. The process was also part Curt Flood, taking the concept of "free" agency to its outer-most limit.

… There are myriad lessons contained in the James free agency drama. The first is controlling the game; not allowing the game to control you. Here is James, a 25-year-old African-American man with a high school diploma, commanding a global stage…

Muhammad Ali famously said, "Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee."

He might instead advise James to "Rumble, young man. Rumble."

by madvillian on Jul 9, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

The Ali compo was about the showmanship, and the "global" interest.

I suspect that LBJ had little to do with that, more likely he was doing as told.

Curt Flood compo is just wrong. As you’ll recall, Flood lost his FA case in court. LBJ eventually benfited from Flood’s fight, as have all free agents.

I don’t see the “pinnacle of the black athlete’s emancipation” aspect you describe anywhere in this piece, implied or otherwise.

really?

“here is james, 25 year old African-American man…”

he compares him to Flood and Ali, two black athletes who put up with a lot of racism and who played during and right after the civil rights era when racial tension was at its highest.

I see it clearly implied that Rhoden thinks Lebron is carrying on their legacy. Lebron ain’t doing that, come on.

Comparing Lebron to Flood and Ali is stupid.

by madvillian on Jul 9, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

"The process was also part Curt Flood, taking the concept of "free" agency to its outer-most limit."

He’s not comparing him to Flood, he’s saying this is what Flood hath wrought… the EXTREME of free agency.

And the Ali comp would be the same for Wood or Jordan too in a similar situation: a black athlete commanding a “global” presence and stage.
What’s wrong with that?

NEW YORK — An upcoming New York City auction will feature the belongings of movie cowboy Roy Rogers – including the preserved remains of his famous horse, Trigger.

Christie’s in Manhattan held a preview Friday for next week’s auction. The items are from the now-closed Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Branson, Mo.

Rogers had his faithful companion preserved with taxidermy in 1965. The presale estimate for the dead horse is $100,000 to $200,000.

Finally! A Lebron piece I agree with:

GREENWICH, CT (The Borowitz Report) — Millions of Americans huddled around their televisions Thursday night, transfixed by the spectacle of an incredibly wealthy man getting a new job.

In living rooms, bars, and restaurants across the country, a record audience gathered to watch the rich guy announce who would be signing his massive new paychecks.

In New York’s Times Square, Tracy Klugian, 27, was one of thousands who braved the blistering temperature to watch the multimillionaire reveal the location of his new employer.

“I wouldn’t have missed this for anything,” said Mr. Klugian. “For anyone who considers himself a fan of the rich getting richer, this was must-see TV.”

Based on the record ratings for its special featuring the rich guy, ESPN announced that instead of airing NBA games, it would schedule two-hour specials showing the rich guy cashing his ginormous paychecks. More here.

We’ve gotten some poor defensive play there too. Figgins, while not playing third this year, is a decent defender. Plus, he’s stayed on the field unlike the guy who broke his middle Tweeter.

Am I the only one who is worried that adding Adam Dunn could possibly ruin team chemistry?

Maybe I’m thinking too hard about this. Obviously I would be thrilled to have his bat in the lineup. But all the guy has done the last few weeks is bitch about how he doesn’t want to get traded (even though he’d be getting traded to a contender, bitch about not wanting to play in the AL, and bitch about not wanting to DH. I don’t want him coming into our clubhouse with a negative attitude. Love this team or hate it, it seems like they’ve all been pulling on the same rope since opening day. If I was Adam Dunn I’d be thrilled at the opportunity of going to a team that has a good shot of making the playoffs and I’d accept whatever role I was given. So…..I dunno. What do you guys think?

That’s different. He became something that the players and coaches had a full season to adapt to and deal with. The Sox would need Dunn to mold to their gameplan from day one to stay in contention.

But there are two trains of thought on this current White Sox team...

You either…

  1. Believe that this team, as is, is currently constructed to be legitimately as good as they have been playing over the last month and that they can continue to play this way the rest of the season to make it into the playoffs.

OR

  1. Believe that this run as of late is the result of the team finding their groove, being on the same page, clicking on all cylinders, and doing a good deal of overachieving. That eventually before the trade deadline they need to acquire another bat (in this case Adam Dunn) in order to stay in contention and possibly win the division because eventually all of this good luck will stop.

After interleague play, I think a lot of people panicked after they saw how they performed in that series against the Royals. But then they came back to win 2 out of 3 from Texas (a good team) and a 4 game sweep of the Angels (a pretty good team). IMO, I want them to go get Adam Dunn if they can. But part of me wonders if maybe, just maybe, the way they are playing right now was all part of the plan. And that maybe we can ride this all the way until the trade deadline.

and it sux that almost doesnt count in baseball, but that series loss to the royals was a good series…i mean they didnt play like total horseshit, they just couldnt call it a comeback. then again too bad they were in the position to even try and call it a comeback…they need a bat in a bad way, worst then loosing peavy, imo.

was from Ricciardi whom pretty much everyone thought was at least tactless, if not an out and out idiot. the vast majority of folks can get along with each other enough to play baseball.

It depends how much it drops ticket sales.

That’s pretty relevant when you’re a money-making organization. I may think watching Paul McAnulty flail all over the place is entertaining, I’m not sure how it gels with the Angels fans, though. They don’t have any pieces that jump out as real must-haves for contenders anyway, and then they’re left with whatever they have.

The price for Dunn (prospect wise) seems -- at this point -- prohibitive

the good thing is that the price should drop over the next three weeks. If the Sox are willing to take on money, Berkman still strikes me as a better option. He projects to hit about as well as Dunn for the rest of the year and I don’t think the Sox would have to give up nearly as much (in prospects) in return.
