I gotta make an airport run. I'll make a proper recap when I get back late tonight, unless one of you want to tackle it.

I can't rememeber a clearly stupider roster decision than picking a DH based on his glove

Obviously, worse decisions have been made (Bagwell for a reliever, etc.). But I can’t remember worse reasoning used to justify a decision.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 17, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

But the last three nights

and this swoon in general, has been mostly because your bullpen can’t get the job done. It’s been the pitching. The offense was there tonight, the pitching wasn’t. The two home runs Putz gave up to Roberts and Avila were both bombs to guys who can’t hit home runs. Ugh.

by larry on Aug 17, 2010 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Because people want it both ways...

They want to ride Ozzie for not keeping Thome because we were losing but then not give him credit for the winning that was done without him. Now that the Bullpen and pitching is going down, let’s cry about Jim Thome. Would it have been nice to have someone better at DH? Sure. but I kinda understood what Ozzie was trying to do. Fact of the mattered is that it worked. his bullpen is now in disarray and none of that has to do with holding on to Jim Thome. We scored 6 tonight and lost. We scored 8 the other night and lost. I mean what the hell?

Perhaps the best way

to frame the 2010 White Sox is that it’s a hugely flawed roster made by a manager and GM who both made mistakes, signed bad players, had an injury to an ace, watched the bullpen melt down in August and once again couldn’t get it up against the only other team in their division that matters.

how long have we had a poor bullpen 1-2 weeks?

Yes, fuck the bullpen, DFA Thorton, Putz and Jenks. Kotsay could have hit a game winning grandslam and I’d still say to have Kotsay over Thome was a huge mistake

by rjhubs on Aug 17, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but 2 weeks ago we were in first

Fact is that we’re scoring enough to win and the bullpen is blowing it. What happened in some random game in April when we scored 2 runs and lost has nothing to do with this game tonight. We blew another save. That’s what happened and that’s why the season is going down the drain.

by thatshortkid on Aug 17, 2010 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Because that's what all this Thome crap is about

It’s about how Ozzie wanted to play ball and win games. He felt he could do it by stealing bases, hitting HRs, and living and dying on pitching because that’s what he did in ‘05. That’s why he didn’t want Thome. Maybe it won’t work but that’s what Ozzie wanted and up to now it worked. The reason it isn’t working now is not because we don’t have Jim Thome.

Yeah but it worked!

by Dils on Aug 17, 2010 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions

but

what Ozzie has forgotten (or misremembered) is that the ’05 Sox hit over 200 home runs and lead the league in almost home runs (sac flies). Multi-run homeruns win games.

I thought Pods stole

quite a few early on or Iguchi would play hit and run with him as well. But I could be mistaken. It’s not like this is new. They traded Carlos Lee for Pods. They let Magglio walk as well. Also Valentine. Ozzie wanted a certain team on the field. Same as now. Everybody just has some weird hard on for Thome I guess

Yeah but it worked!

Staying Out of White Sox Business

by benlinus on Aug 17, 2010 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

you're eyes and short-term memory are fooling you

a lost game in may is worth just as much as a lost game tonight. Blown saves are much easier to identify and remember than games lost from not enough offense. Also, the idea that the offense is now fine is also flawed, 6 runs was not enough to win this game. To have only 6 runs given the numerous opportunities is an offensive problem. Who is to say what a better offensive lineup could have done with that poor pitching, and blown save is just easier to attribute a loss to.

Both teams starters sucked tonight, both teams bullpens were weak tonight, but ONE team scored more runs.

by rjhubs on Aug 17, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

You can recover a bit more easily

from a blown-save in May than in August though. Yes, a win is a win, a loss is a loss, but with only 40 games left and a 4 game deficit (as opposed to 4 games with 100 games left) is a steeper mountain to climb.

While I am in absolute

agreement that the DH has been a total disaster and a huge flaw and has cost this team, the recent swoon I place more on the bullpen. CatBrains is right, these games seem to mean more because of recency, but they also in actuality matter more because there are fewer games going forward.

Yes, keeping Thome would have been nice, but any real DH was a need. The offense got you enough the last 3 days, specifically, but the pen couldn’t hold onto it.

Look, no matter where you place the specific blame (and it’s subjective at this point, I think) the entire roster is very flawed. We don’t deserve to win the division.

But, even if you weren’t going to keep him you could have upgraded the DH. Thome is a mistake hitter. Thorton threw a high fast ball up and in instead of a breakball low and away. Thome crushed shit up. He was here for three years, Thorton supplied the power and put it in the wrong place.

Recency effect

Those games mean more to you emotionally because you have a better memory of them. They do not however count more than the games where we couldn’t score runs.

Also, more runs would mean fewer high leverage situations for our relievers, which means fewer chances for blown games.

I’ll say this quickly about the eventual retaliation for the Twins’ wrongdoings — don’t throw at Delmon Young. He’s a big and (seemingly) angry motherfucker. Make Joe Mauer pay for Young and Perkins’ sins. A fastball right in the ribs should suffice.

Part of that is because

they have an unjustified reputation for being hot-headed under Ozzie. Don’t let the facts get in the way, but I think ozzie fears a heavier punishment by MLB if the Sox do retaliate. The Twins know it.

Well, I'm glad you all were so sure about Thome this whole time.

I personally wasn’t sure about bringing him back or not and I actually liked the idea of using Kotsay / Jones as an alternative. I think the upgrade on the basepaths combined with with their ability to rest position players has worked in our favor.

All I know is that we reached first place while using this system – and had keeping Thome not done so then it would have felt like a wasted year for the rotation.

Which, by the way, I feel is a fair view since you’re all so sure Thome would have played so well for us this year.

Black Sox

I agree that there was risk in bringing back Thome. But (BUT), respectfully, any baserunning or defense that you get from Kotsay/Jones (which isn’t much) is totally voided by their total lack of offensive production.

This is to say NOTHING of the comparison of what Thome brings offensively. By whatever metrics you want to use (the traditional line of BA/HR/RBIs, the more advanced metrics of OBP/OPS/SLG or WAR/wOBA), Jim Thome is a better player than any combination of what the Sox have used. Without doubt, not having Jim Thome (himself) has hurt the 2010 club.

That is not to say, however, that this 2010 club could not have beaten the Twins tonight with a real DH. You didn’t necessarily HAVE to have Jim Thome, you just had to bring in a suitable replacement. The White Sox did not, and were thus burned by a hole in their lineup. They were doubly burned when Thome signed with a division rival and proceeded to kick them in the balls, repeatedly and swiftly.

Like why the Sox seemingly have trouble versus the Twins in particular and the AL West. The only thing that kind of gives me solice (sp?) is knowing there is 5 weeks left and they have to try and fight through whatever pitching/hitting funk they happen to be in now.

Jackson has been good.

But trading away 6 years of Hudson for 2 semi-pricey years of jackson isn’t looking like a good move. Obviously, it’s not the worst trade ever. I just wish the Sox had a young cheap starter doing what Hudson is doing.

But you also

have to ask if Hudson would be able to do this in the AL Central vs. the NL West. Context is important too. You might have had the 6 cost-controlled years of Hudson, but would his pitching be better than that of jackson, who actually has already done it in the AL? Who knows.

by blackoutsox on Aug 17, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Jackson was getting shelled in the NL west this season

So does that mean Hudson is actually better than Jackson? And it’s not like jackson has been pitching against powerhouse offenses since coming to the Sox. I think NL West vs AL Central stuff is overstated. Hudson was up against a decent offense tonight.

In the end, if Hudson keeps pitching like this, he clearly would be fine in the AL Central as well and the money and years make it a bad trade.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 17, 2010 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I didnt like the trade

but I bet Jackson whoops Hudson’s ass next year.

Yea, I can see that

but there’s only one real pitcher’s park in the AL Central (and that’s debatable). There are at least 3 (and three good ones) in the NL West.

Even though we cringe when Hawk screams “stretch” on a routine fly ball or says the game “turned around” on a bad call by the umpire on a 1-2 count, he’s still the best. Can’t you see him him staring into a shot glass saying “what the fuck” after last’s night game. Tonight is a must win, we’ll do it.

One would hope when their mistakes become this blatantly obvious, they will have no choice but to learn from them going forward. Same as seeing a guy like Hudson dominating or Swisher & Branden Allen killing the ball. Although at this point, they’ve made so many mistakes, it will take a lot of time, money or luck to fix the problems they’ve created.

i think the only way for management and coaching to change their approach is

to effectively replace management and coaching. obviously ozzie isn’t going anywhere, but he’s also an above average coach imo who nows how to handle a pitching staff better than most. rick hahn in place of kenny would work for me..

I'm fine with KW being fired or moved up

Because his last two years have been awful, but I have to disagree here.

This is the first time KW hasn’t had a big bat as a DH. Frank Thomas & then Jim Thome. This not having a real DH is Ozzie’s idea and KW gave him a chance to run with it, and he fell before he got out of the starting blocks.

He tried to get Berkman and Dunn. He’ll get someone in the offseason, or put Q at DH and add a real RF. Whoever it is, it won’t be a guy like Mark Kotsay again, it will be a big bat.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 18, 2010 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Only if Hahn can smack Ozzie back into his place

Don’t forget it was Ozzie who called for a defensive, rotating DH. I think he has an inordinate amount of say on these issues and that JR told KW to give Ozzie what he wanted.

Ozzie certainly has his own experiences as a player, coach and manager, and is entitled to his own opinions, but the Chicago White Sox believe his views are incorrect.'' - (What should be the) White Sox official statement (on the DH issue and coveting speed over OPS)

can't think of anything else

I live in MN and was at the game last night. I’ve never wanted to get out of a stadium more quickly than I did last night. I’m almost to the point of not wanting to wear Sox gear to Target Field anymore because it just leads to an incredibly uncomfortable walk back to the car after the game.

Anyway, you can’t blame this loss on the Thome decision. Our DH Kotsay had a pretty nice game himself. Hit a home run to get us back into the game and led off the 10th with a base hit that led to what should have been the winning run. Both DH’s went 3-5 with a homer and multiple runs and RBI’s. Our guy did not get thrown out at home on a play where every other player in baseball scores from first.

As was the case over the weekend, this loss is a result of poor clutch hitting (leaving bases loaded twice again and failing to add insurance in top of 10th) and the bullpen’s inability to close out a tight game. The reason the Sox are 4 out rather than 4 up right now is because of those factors. I don’t care what Jim Thome does or doesn’t do.

by Wayne Nordhagen on Aug 18, 2010 9:13 AM CDT reply actions

I don't get this...

it is a silly argument anyway, but saying we didn’t lose THIS game because of the Thome decision because both DH’s had similar stat lines. This argument requires all sorts of completely absurd assumptions. But even for the sake of argument say that it does not matter what team Kotsay and Thome are playing for and no matter what other circumstances are involved they would have this exact same stat line on 8/17/2010… even under those ridiculous circumstance you seem to be missing the double fucking we are getting from not signing Thome. We may have only just replaced Kotsay’s production for the day, but also

I am one of those who wanted Thome, but understood why they let him go.

Last night is irrelevant in the context of Thome vs Kotsay, at least for me, because if Thorton hits his spots, Thome K’s and we most likely win. We can talk about the offensive flaws of this team all we want (and they have them, without doubt). But, at the end of the game, if you have a lead, be it 1 run, 2 runs or whatever, you should win. The last three games, our bullpen has failed. It has blown the last 5 games it has been brought in. The whole thing is multi-faceted, but primary blame, for me, lies on the bullpen.

See my comment below . . . underneath the Foghat picture

but if the Sox capitalize on scoring opportunities in the 9th and take the lead rather than just tie, Thornton only pitches one inning and they likely win. To me, the offense is putting burdens on the bullpen. I agree that it’s multifaceted SUCK, but weak offenses puts pressure on the bullpen.

And by the way, Thome is making the Twins forget about their own bullpen woes this morning.

or this

The bullpen could have converted the last three save opportunities and we’d be tied in the standings that way as well.

Combine that with Jenks rollercoaster year and it’s easy to say that the Sox would be in first place with a better bullpen performance over the past month. That is a simple fact which is independent of Jim Thome’s statlines.

I’m not saying that letting Thome walk wasn’t a mistake, especially now that he’s gone to MN and Morneau has gotten hurt.

We all knew that Thome would come back and hit a game-winning homer against the Sox at some point this year. It just sucks that because of the bullpen’s recent struggles, this was a game the Sox needed so badly.

by Wayne Nordhagen on Aug 18, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

the standard you're setting for the bullpen is essentially unattainable.

the white sox have had either the best bullpen in the league, or right there, this season. the bullpen is in a slump right now. the white sox DHs have been horseshit for the entire season. which was easier to rectify.

by larry on Aug 18, 2010 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

unattainable?

I don’t think successfully closing three straight games is unattainable. If you’re claiming to be one of the best bullpens in the league, it should be very attainable.

by Wayne Nordhagen on Aug 18, 2010 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

They've already been near perfect though..

At some point, any bullpen is going to blow some saves. It just happens to be now for the White Sox.

On the other hand, our DH has been bad the entire season. How do you know not comprehend which is hurting the team more?

by Grinder in Training on Aug 18, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

i can point to any short stretch of the season

and say, if this guy did this over four games or the starters did that over a week or the bullpen did this other thing or the offense did something like this over eight games the white sox would have won 90 games already.

i don’t give a shit about short stretches. you don’t build a team or judge a team on short stretches. you build a team and judge a team on long stretches. like, say, the 119 games the white sox have played so far. there have been some other problems with this team that have lasted over the entire season, or a significant chunk of it. i don’t think there has been one as large – and as blatantly fucking obvious from december on – as the black hole at DH. and a solution to that problem – one that was goddamn gift-wrapped for the white sox – was jim thome.

i’m not going to whine about a bullpen or relievers that have won far more games for the white sox than they’ve lost for the white sox, even including the last week. i am going to point out the problem that has, and continues to, lose games for the white sox.

by larry on Aug 18, 2010 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

not perfect, but better

The DH represents one spot out of nine in the batting order. It’s very possible to win with a mediocre DH. But it’s nearly impossible to win consistently with a shakey bullpen.

You're missing the point. It's still only three games in a 162 game season.

Maybe if the offense averaged more than 4 runs a game when they were 24-33, they could be tied in the standings. Or maybe if the White Sox DH’s were batting more than .239/.308/.411, they’d be tied in the standings, too.

I don't think

it’s about picking one thing or the other. Yes, you’ve gotten ZERO DH production, but let’s be honest: you’ve gotten nothing at catcher, a month and a half from 2nd, I don’t even know how to judge Q!‘s performance and Rios has gone away this month. Maybe if the rest of your offense was a bit more consistent, you don’t have to worry as much about the DH (that does not mean the position can be a hole in your line up, though).

The bullpen has blown, what, 5 straight save opps? Yes, bullpens aren’t going to be perfect, but the level of garbage they’ve given you lately is unacceptable.

So you want the rest of the team to be all-stars?

That’s not practical. Catcher is not an easy fix. DH is. It was cheap, it was a known player, he wanted to be here. The fact is, it’s the biggest problem, and the easiest to fix.

Sure, if the rest of the team was great, we could handle a not as good DH. But why? Why would you accept that? That doesn’t justify adding Jim Thome over Kotsay / Jones. Just because something could work, doesn’t mean it couldn’t work a hell of a lot better. It’s fucking ridiculous.

well thats good.

or you could blame it on freddy’s horrific start…. or putz putting 30 men on base… or jones for missing a fly.. or pena for coughing up 100 runs in the 9th… or the offense leaving 300 men on base…… any of those would be right.

9 guys in a lineup and on the field, and 27 outs to work with on offense. It is a rare occasion where a single person is to blame for a loss.

Perhaps , , ,

But I think the point is that a lot of factors are combining—-weak offense particularly but that play as well—-that is putting pressure on the bullpen. And when it doesn’t deliver, or is in a slump, it looks like it is all their fault. The White Sox have put the bullpen in some unenviable positions in the last couple of weeks. The Sox take care of business elsewhere in the game, and the bullpen doesn’t have to shoulder as much as it has been asked to do.

Of course, but sometimes you have to help

I wonder, too, if there is not something to what Ozzie says when he claimed the Sox bullpen is better when it has Jenks—a healthy one at least—closing. With Jenks hurt or whatever has been ailing him has robbed the Sox of flexibility it had earlier in the summer.

i think colin’s point, though, is that it’s not like they spent $5M to have bench insurance or had to acquire some pricey veteran to replace him at the deadline. they spent less than the white sox and also spent wisely. for example, the white sox’ morneau is sort of peavy. and the white sox decided they had to go out and take on jackson’s salary.

The White Sox bullpen blew it last night, but so did the Twins bullpen.

The difference was they had Thome, and we didn’t. For the moment, Thome is making them forget that Rauch can no longer get anybody out and that Capps is no Joe Nathan.

Sure, the bullpen has blown the last three games, but I would submit that weak offenses often put undue pressure on bullpens. The White Sox should have socred more than 2 runs on Saturday and should have taken advantage scoring opportunities last night in the 9th and 10th. And let us not forget that a weak offense, not the bullpen, left the bases loaded three times against Liriano last week.

I have very limited confidence in the bullpen right now, but the Sox’ inability to get timely hitting is making it harder even harder on the Thornton, Putz, Santos et al.

by VAChisox on Aug 18, 2010 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

And if the Sox had scored

with the bases loaded and one out in the 9th last night, Thornton only has to pitch one inning. And the Sox probably win. Again, the lack of timely hitting is creating the problems that bullpen has to shoulder.

oh shut the fuck up with the thome thing.....

If you want to judge on the last couple of weeks,

the offense, not the bullpen, scores 10 runs in four games in Baltimore; the offense, not the bullpen, scores one run off Rick Porcello, who has sucked this year and who the Sox have pummeled in the past; the offense leaves the bases loaded three times against Liriano last week, and the offense passes up opportunities last night in the 9th and 10th to put the game out of reach.

I share the frustration with the bullpen, but the offense is backing them into a corner.

He sucks now, but I figured he was going to fall off by June. Plus, I didn’t think Kenny would trade Hudson so unless we want to see Carlos Torres I think Sweaty is going to ride out the season.

The issue isn’t picking one factor and only blaming that. The bullpen has been awful for a week, but we’ve had a DH problem the entire season. Looking back everyone will remember the August collapse, but there’s a shitload of games in April/May that could have gone differently with a better offense.

I don’t think anyone’s willing to give the bullpen a pass or whatever, but the game was a microcosm of the teams’ problems.

What horrible, horrible logic.

It’s not robbing Peter to pay Paul — it’s bludgeoning Peter to death, and then realizing on the way back that you forgot to grab his wallet.

I missed the shock and awe last night

saw it this morning on Sportsrise…fuck…if we win the next two games, we are only two out. Even though that loss is an indictment on the poor offseason decisions….the season is not over.

That is excellent.

Gleason with that cigar, total disregard for segment boundaries, Lester Munson’s crusty ass… this is awesome.

Dear Commissioner Selig . . .

Why, oh why, did you not contract the Twins when you had the chance? Their continued presence in MLB hath brought rancor and acrimony to the House that Cheat Built. Please restore harmony, tranquility, and justice to the land (not to mention worker productivity) by contracting away those bastards.

Oh, and would it be possible to revise the schedule? I know it’s late in the season, but the White Sox could use 12 to 15 games against the National League right now.

We all wanted Thome...

sure we did. Thome strikes out rather than crushing that pitch and we all are glad we don’t have the slow guy who got thrown out at home and strikes out too much.

Yeah we all wanted Thome….

Actually what we really wanted was a left handed power bat with decent speed. but compared to the garbage we have right now Thome looks fantastic. That pretty much makes him better than the nothing we have.

Except Nick Johnson, that’s still kind of funny.
