Manny Ramirez Claimed By White Sox
Your afternoon Manny-mania thread. Per Jayson Stark:
#WhiteSox were the team awarded the claim on Manny, according to MLB source.
The clubs have until Tuesday to work out a trade or the Dodgers could simply let him go.

The Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers are among the teams who have had recent interest in Ramirez, sources have said. It would be somewhat surprising if the claiming team was someone outside of that group.

Whether they will hand him over or we will have to give them a player has yet to be seen.

Lillibridge is a more valuable bench player than Jones. Rios shouldn’t need any more than 2 days off from here on out.

Even though the Dodgers are likely to wait
that strategy could backfire if the White Sox are offering something for Manny now, since this weekend could hit us hard too. But the Dodgers will still be able to just unload him, they may lose the opportunity to get something back in return.
I'm really hoping that
KW already worked out a deal to get him by this weekend. I can’t think of a better time for him to play than against the Yankees.
Yeah but it worked!
I think a lot
depends on whether the owners get on the phone with Coletti and say, "Give him away, now,‘’ in order to dump the value of the contract due to their divorce. Coletti wouldn’t want to just let him go, but I don’t think the owners will risk getting stuck with an extra $4 mill.

Manny >>>> Thome
except for the games we lost with Kotsay/Jones at DH instead of Thome. Give me Manny and his career .313/.411/.589 stat line.
"We saw death and I don't think we fear it anymore. Not unlike 2005, when we finally clinched and then we took off in the playoffs." Coop 7/29/10
Why are you using a career statline?
It’s pretty clear that Manny’s power has tapered off while Thome’s hasn’t. Also, Manny was indisputably on the juice, which is a pretty good explanation why he can’t jack it out of the park anymore.
Also, I hate to say this, but I think Manny’s 65 games or whatever has been a mirage, and that he’s running significantly over expectation.

should have looked up before i hit post
When I was a kid, I didn't want to be a doctor or a fireman. I wanted to be Super Mario. It's the most literal pipe dream I've ever had.
thome's ISO is .040 above his career norm this season
it had been declining since 2006. don’t bet the farm on 278 PA.
Manny is still better than anything else we’ll throw out there
When I was a kid, I didn't want to be a doctor or a fireman. I wanted to be Super Mario. It's the most literal pipe dream I've ever had.
To be fair
I hadn’t done my due diligence when making the first post, I wanted to delete, for some reason I thought Manny had a bad year last year, but he didn’t, just not a Manny year.

"it’s over, tdogg.
no. it’s not unlike me. when i make an unqualified statement, it means i’m sure i’m right" Larry
just take a look at the post season stats between the two
Thome post season: .222/.321/.488
Manny post season: .285/.394/.544
I’ll take Manny please. 2x over. Yes please.

because manny is in decline - albeit a gentle one - and that line isn't reflective of what he is currently capable of doing.
and yet take the last 3 yrs and manny is closer to his career line and is putting up better numbers than thome

why would i take the last 3 yrs? why not the last 2 yrs? or last 1 yr? or some other timeframe so that i can make stupid points using them?
you that dense? cause it gives you more data points douche.
sure pick one year and you run the risk it is out of the mean + sd. take 3 years or more in recent time and you get a better idea of the “true” value.
anyways, take 09 and manny still had a better year. what is your point larry?

weighted 3 is more similar to 3 w/o weight than 4 seasons or 2 and 3 is the generally accepted norm, right? my point was it’s a reasonable way to eyeball a projection.

great. ramirez may be better than thome. it’s one month. let me know how those projections based on three years hold up for 26 games. and why compare him to a player that isn’t available.

Hours after it became public that the Chicago White Sox had secured waiver rights to him, Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez was conspicuously absent from the starting lineup that was posted in the clubhouse before Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre claimed the decision had nothing to do with the uncertainty of whether Ramirez is going to the White Sox via waiver claim or trade sometime in the next three days. Instead, Torre told ESPNLosAngeles.com it had more to do with the fact the Dodgers were facing Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the front-runner for the National League Cy Young Award.
“Manny is out of the lineup because he hasn’t been back long enough and I don’t think he is sharp enough to face Jimenez,” Torre said.

OT: Question about the SSS Chain of Command
Let’s say the Chinese, emboldened with their newly fangled DF21Ds, decide to attack America and The Cheat’s plywood-reinforced bunker suffers a direct hit from a tactical nuclear warhead, who would become the new Managing Editor? Would SSS hold a special election or would the Editors fight amongst themselves to determine the new Managing Editor. Also, would one of the lucky Authors be promoted to Editor? This question has been bugging me for the last several months.

gentlemen; i do believe that adding manny is still a great move.
its probably been said before, but this year the guy is hitting .270 off lefties but .323 off righties (essentially the same as having a left handed bat) and i think we can all agree that manny right now may not be in his prime, but he still closer to his prime than, say, “junior” when we picked him up in 2008 (he just looked overpowered that whole playoff run). were not going to give up a prospect for this guy, and its not our money (its jerry’s) that is being spent, so just do your part and buy tickets to the games if manny gets signed to support the team. im sure it will be fun to watch the guy play anyway.
ps, in my life, my four favorite players to watch bat have been Ken griffey, ichiro, manny, and arod… if this KW trend continues i think we should have arod and ichiro on the southside within the next 3 years :-P
