Manny Ramirez Claimed By White Sox

Your afternoon Manny-mania thread. Per Jayson Stark:

#WhiteSox were the team awarded the claim on Manny, according to MLB source.

The clubs have until Tuesday to work out a trade or the Dodgers could simply let him go.

Update: Yankees/Rays did not claim (per Morosi)

Story:

The Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers are among the teams who have had recent interest in Ramirez, sources have said. It would be somewhat surprising if the claiming team was someone outside of that group.

Even though the Dodgers are likely to wait

that strategy could backfire if the White Sox are offering something for Manny now, since this weekend could hit us hard too. But the Dodgers will still be able to just unload him, they may lose the opportunity to get something back in return.

I think a lot

depends on whether the owners get on the phone with Coletti and say, "Give him away, now,‘’ in order to dump the value of the contract due to their divorce. Coletti wouldn’t want to just let him go, but I don’t think the owners will risk getting stuck with an extra $4 mill.

The Sox will retire his No. 35 prior to Sunday’s game. If you can’t be at the ballpark, Comcast SportsNet will air the ceremony live, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

And if you want to remember what made Mr. Thomas so great, check out CSN’s re-broadcast of a July, 2003, game against Minnesota. He hit two homers, including a walk-off in the 12th. CSN will show the game Saturday at noon.

Why are you using a career statline?

It’s pretty clear that Manny’s power has tapered off while Thome’s hasn’t. Also, Manny was indisputably on the juice, which is a pretty good explanation why he can’t jack it out of the park anymore.

Also, I hate to say this, but I think Manny’s 65 games or whatever has been a mirage, and that he’s running significantly over expectation.

ladies and gentlemen, start your specubation
Hours after it became public that the Chicago White Sox had secured waiver rights to him, Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez was conspicuously absent from the starting lineup that was posted in the clubhouse before Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre claimed the decision had nothing to do with the uncertainty of whether Ramirez is going to the White Sox via waiver claim or trade sometime in the next three days. Instead, Torre told ESPNLosAngeles.com it had more to do with the fact the Dodgers were facing Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the front-runner for the National League Cy Young Award.

“Manny is out of the lineup because he hasn’t been back long enough and I don’t think he is sharp enough to face Jimenez,” Torre said.

Is that like the New York Dolls?

David Johansen was the bomb back in the day.

Also as Buster Poindexter.

“Hot, Hot, Hot” was great kitsch until it was played every hour on every cruise ship across the world.

It is a "Gentlemen's Club"

If you define “gentlemen” as bachelor parties and creepy regulars.

No problem getting

Clear channel 67WMAQ in the Dells for the game. I listened to every game in nearby Reedsburg a few weekends ago.

Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game of 2008.

I had 'em all the way up to Marinette, Wisconsin two weeks ago.

Tried to listen in Escanaba, but the local AM station is on 680.

It is amazing how many Native American names are cities in the North and in FL.

Escanaba could be a city in the Panhandle. You would think the United States was once inhabited solely by Indians.

gentlemen; i do believe that adding manny is still a great move.

its probably been said before, but this year the guy is hitting .270 off lefties but .323 off righties (essentially the same as having a left handed bat) and i think we can all agree that manny right now may not be in his prime, but he still closer to his prime than, say, “junior” when we picked him up in 2008 (he just looked overpowered that whole playoff run). were not going to give up a prospect for this guy, and its not our money (its jerry’s) that is being spent, so just do your part and buy tickets to the games if manny gets signed to support the team. im sure it will be fun to watch the guy play anyway.

ps, in my life, my four favorite players to watch bat have been Ken griffey, ichiro, manny, and arod… if this KW trend continues i think we should have arod and ichiro on the southside within the next 3 years :-P
