White Sox Minor League Update Is On Shuffle
Tyler Flowers was drafted by the Braves in the 33rd round in 2005, a draft-and-follow pick out of Chipola Junior College. He signed in 2006, hit .279/.373/.465 for Danville in the Appalachian League, then tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. I didn't put him in the 2007 book, but would have rated him a Grade C prospect, a guy with offensive potential but a big question mark over his head. How would he do without the juice?
Flowers missed much of the first half of 2007 due to his suspension, but when he came back he played well for Rome in the Sally League, hitting .298/.378/.488 with 34 doubles, 12 homers, 49 walks, and 74 strikeouts in 389 at-bats. Defensive reviews were mixed. A knee injury kept him at first base much of the season, but Braves officials were optimistic about his defense long-term. I gave him a Grade C+ in the 2008 book but noting that he "had some breakout potential."
2008 was a strong season: he hit .288/.427/.494 with 17 homers, 98 walks, and 102 strikeouts for Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League. Obviously I love the walks, and his strikeouts aren't out of bounds for a young power hitter. His overall production was quite impressive at +27 percent OPS compared to league. He was consistent from month to month, until a massive August hot streak (.355/.474/.671) ended his season on a positive note. He did show a strong platoon split, 1.042 OPS against lefties, .885 against right-handers, but I'm not overly worried about that. On defense, he threw out 28% of runners attempting to steal. He also made 12 errors and allowed 11 passed balls, so he's got some work to do polishing up the defensive skills.
Flowers will move to Double-A in 2009. I'd rate him a Grade B prospect at a minimum right now, and am considering a Grade B+.

I'd be interested on your thoughts on where these guys start next year.
Viciedo – sox or AAA?
Morel – sox or AAA?
Flowers – sox or AAA?
Sale – sox or AAA? reliever or starter?
I photoshopped a boner on the security guard but it's too dark to see --- billyok
if i had to say
viciedo – Sox depending on some other roster moves
morel – AAA
Flowers – AAA
Sale -A+ or AA as a starter
-Jeeves Life in the Cell
Id guess Flowers and Sale are both in Chicago-
Sale on the Mark Buehrle career path.
Flowers as our starting backstop.
that one funny thing that guy said yesterday
i was hoping that santos was on the buerhle path :)

I think so too, but I wouldnt mind re-signing Putz
Sale has to stay here so the Chicago food can put a few pounds on him.
that one funny thing that guy said yesterday
give some team like 5 million to dump bobby and give the rest to putz
something tells me even the mafia wouldn't call on greg walker if a hit was needed.
-MarketMaker
they'll non-tender him and pay him nothing.
sale will probably be in the bullpen and we’ll need another right hander from somewhere.
I photoshopped a boner on the security guard but it's too dark to see --- billyok
Sale will be sarting in the minors
If they have any sense.
but will he start?
something tells me even the mafia wouldn't call on greg walker if a hit was needed.
-MarketMaker
You can just let bobby walk as a free agent.
Why would you pay another team 5 million?

well the buehrle path included 30 starts in the minors over 2 seasons
at the beginning of the season, I would have said that flowers would be catching in the bigs in 2011, but I don’t know what the org will think of his season this year

is there anything informative from a home/away split that’s favorable for away? it doesn’t make sense to me..

Top prospect Jared Mitchell also continues to improve after surgery this spring to repair a tendon tear. He was injured while making a catch during spring training. The outfielder’s recovery is taking place with Single-A Winston Salem, and he is progressing “very well,” according to White Sox trainer Herm Schneider. Mitchell was preparing for his first full season in the organization before he was injured.
Mitchell, the club’s first-round pick in 2009, has continued to work on baseball skills that include hitting, running, agility work and taking fly balls, all within a controlled environment. The team’s target is still for him to return to action in the instructional league.

I dont think thats the case
Paulie has spent the entire prime of his career with us, won a championship, and 2 division titles. It’s been said over and over again that KW and Oswaldo even pitch him trade ideas before pulling the trigger, so he’s obviously an intricate part of this organization. Paulie is going nowhere. Expect a hometown discount if anything.

I think he'd take a reasonable hometown discount, maybe even 10%
But he’s putting together quite the year, with Mark Kotsay protecting him. He may be too expensive even with a discount.

he'll get it if he saves the ball for Jerry again this year.

morel apparently "eked out" best defender over pedro alvarez
which shows the less than accurate nature of these things, considering the defensive difference between those two is similar to the difference between vizquel and viciedo.

petricka 1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K
earl weaver method to get Petricka used to the sally league?
seems a bit much. if its an innings limit thing, why not leave him in bristol?
He was clearly too good for Bristol
What’s wrong with moving him up and limiting his innings?
by The Big Hurt on Aug 11, 2010 2:39 AM CDT up reply actions
the jump from rookie to A ball doesn't seem to be
anything like AAA to ML where you would have to get used to facing top quality hitters at all times.
I’m fine with limiting his innings but limit them as a starter where he’s forced to work on all of his pitches instead of letting him get by with one or two pitches coming out of the pen. that’s the point, it seems silly to promote him to a still-easy league and not have him work on all of his pitches.
commonly throwing 6 inning side sessions?
there’s value to playing while tired. it forces you to learn how to control your body in all body states. it’d be like making sure you practice free throws at the end of a hard practice so you know how to shoot free throws when you’re tired and hurting like the end of a game instead of only being good at shooting free throws when you’re fresh.
good lord.
why would you want a guy who has already pitched about 135 innings this year to be throwing many more innings. i sure don’t want him to be experiencing such a large jump in innings thrown.
and i’m sure it’s really difficult to for petricka to be pitching to guys who were at their proms three months ago. facing some halfway decent competition is kind of a good thing.
Black looking decent this week.

So Vazquez and Abreu suck a lot.
Or at least had a horrific night. Morel also had 3 K’s.

Fourth-round pick Matthew Grimes and eighth-round pick Josef Terry remain the two unsigned White Sox selections among their top 10 from the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
The team has until Aug. 16 to come to terms with the young men or they will re-enter the 2011 Draft.
“I’m kind of cautiously optimistic on both of them, really,” said White Sox director of amateur scouting Doug Laumann, in Chicago to finalize matters with the drop-dead date on Monday. "Both of them are satisfied with what we are trying to do for getting them done.
“We’ve kind of gone to the wall with both as far as what we wanted to do. It’s in their hands now.”
Grimes, a 6-foot-5, 18-year-old right-handed pitcher out of Millcreek High School in Georgia, has the option of playing for Georgia Tech. Terry, a 20-year-old middle infielder from Cerritos Junior College in California, could opt for collegiate ball at Long Beach State.
