Manny Ramirez Has Magical On-Deck HR-Inducing Powers

Who says there's no such thing as protection?

Manny's been on the Sox for 2 days. Twice he's stepped into the on deck circle in the late innings. And twice the batter in front of him has hit go-ahead, ultimately game-winning 3 run homeruns.

That's all the evidence I need.

The Sox haven't lost with Manny on the roster, and just completed their first sweep since July.

There are 29 games left; I doubt the Sox lose another one.

Rob Dibble made headlines twice last month for controversial comments about female baseball fans and Stephen Strasburg’s elbow injury, and today MASN and the Nationals announced that he’s been let go as the team’s television analyst.

I’ve written quite a bit about Dibble recently, so I won’t rehash all my points again, but suffice it to say there are a lot of happy Nationals fans right now.

Ultimately telling Strasburg to “suck it up” and “stop crying” when it turned out he had an elbow injury that requires Tommy John surgery is what cost Dibble his job, but even setting aside the various controversies he could have just as easily been fired for simply being a terrible announcer.

Dibble was a Hawk Harrelson-level homer, except without any of the charm, story-telling ability, clever phrase-turning, or worthwhile analysis. He was just all grunts and low-brow machismo, and no real baseball fan tunes into a game to hear that garbage. I’m sure he’ll land on his feet with another prominent gig, because “loud” and “controversial” can generate ratings, but for now at least he’s no longer in the same profession as Vin Scully.

Fun BABIP facts about teh Twinn of Minnesota:

1. Their overall BABIP this year is a robust .312. (the Sox, by comparison, are hitting .291)
2. Their BABIP against the Sox this year is .343.
3. Their BABIP against the Sox this year in Minnesota is .375.
4. Their BABIP against Sox right-handers in Minnesota is .420. Yup, .420.

what you're looking for is called xBABIP

which would give you an expected BABIP as compared to the actual BABIP to regress to.

other than that, you expect them to regress to the mean unless you think they’ve got a particular skill or lack thereof.

Danks – 3.65 vs. Liriano – 3.27
Floyd – 3.86 vs. Pavano 3.52
Buehrle – 3.96 vs. Baker 4.55
Jackson – 1.47 vs. Duensing – 2.04

And it’s debatable that Duensing is their 4, so even Blackburn @ 6.02 or Slowey (coming back in a few weeks) @ 4.39 is significantly worse than what EW has done for us.

Didn't they used to flip a coin for 163 if a season series between the two was tied in the past?

It’s nice to look at how teams do H2H, but that shows how important those are at the end of the day – it’s all about making it to the postseason and giving yourself a chance each year. Obviously we won’t be facing the Twins in the playoffs should we make it this year, so that’s obsolete. You would take Min’s rotation over ours going into a 5 or 7 game series in the postseason?

we can't base it off one game so far

but I’d like to think w/o KotsayDH and Manny’s magical on-deck powers that our offense is closer than theirs being “way better”, at least until Morneau comes back.

That being said, their bullpen and defense are hands down, i agree, “way better”

I just don’t think overall they’re “way better.” Way more consistent, yes. Better? Yes. But “way better”, no.

i don’t agree. which means that over a 5 or 7 game series, i think it probably doesn’t matter much.

if we throw in defense

then yeah, it probably doesn’t matter much because they seem to make the routine and spectacular plays way more consistently in the field. I’d love to see our rotation behind that kind of defense.

Purely on paper, no.

Our pitching staff should (I actually agree with OznCoop here) run circles around them and should be enough to make the offensive differences much closer.

They still have

even without Morneau, an MVP/batting champ catcher, a left fielder having a great year (albeit by some traditional measurements), a more (much) productive DH combo and are a better defensive team.

By the numbers

(UZR) he’s having an off the charts year. Yes, he’s the Sox best defensive player (or rather 1A with Rios), but two isn’t enough to make up for the difference between the Twins.

And Sox fans, get over the idea that Konerko is some wiz at first. He’ll make the occasional nice play, but he’s not Joey Votto, no matter what Hawk says.

Wait, has he even

his point.

is that you’d have to watch a whole hell of a lot of baseball – and probably not work for a living – to be able to adequately opine on him being the best in the league. particularly with the addition of “right now”, which would imply that you have watched multiple games each day.

Well Well turns out that I've watched every game this year.

And saying that Ramirez is the best defensive SS in the league isn’t stretch at all and it doesn’t take a genius or Baseball servant to come to a conclusion or assumption that Alexi is playing the best at his position right now without being treated like he just Jenks is the best closer in baseball or something silly like that.

saying you’ve watched every sox game does nothing to counter larry’s point.

by rjhubs on Sep 1, 2010 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Look

The opinion was given that Ramirez is the best defensive SS in baseball by me. Others felt I was wrong and also said that I’d have to watch every game to come to that conclusion. I’m saying that in MY opinion he’s the best and a GG SS by what I’ve seen. Larry said that because I post on Blogabull I don’t watch that much baseball. Then I said I’ve watched every game and that why I feel that way. So you’re kinda catching on to different comments for different things.

But with that said, I have a hard time thinking of anyone else who’s playing a better SS that Ramirez. It’s my opinion.

Yeah but it worked!

by Dils on Sep 1, 2010 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

larry's point with blogabull

was that perhaps the reason you have a hard time thinking of anyone else is that with the rest of our lives going on, it is damn near impossible to be able to gauge every shortstop in the league.

probably not. on the other hand, the FSR has him up there:

Idk.

Those rating say Alexei has better hands and a stronger arm. Coupled with his (Alexei’s) offensive ability (read: power) I would have a tough time picking one over the other if I’m starting a baseball team.

Where do you get that idea?

I was using the measurements used in that article. It’s not a vacuum argument, offensive production matters. I think it’s very fair to say that their defense is a toss up, probably with the edge going to Andrus.

Given that Alexei has very comparable defensive stats and better offensive numbers, it’s not an easy answer.
