Brent Morel Promoted to White Sox

The White Sox called up 3B Brent Morel for the series in Boston. While the promotion is certainly deserved, it is an indication that the hand injury to Gordon Beckham may be worse than originally thought, as Morel was not expected to join the White Sox until after the completion of Charlotte's season next week. Beckham stated that he hoped to be back for the start of the series against the Red Sox on Friday but he still could not grip a bat on Wednesday.
At a minimum, Morel provides defensive cover, as he plays a very good defensive 3B and has played SS for the Knights this season, as well. Between Birmingham and Charlotte this season, he's put up a very impressive .322/.359/.480. Morel is not the prototypical power-hitting 3B. His power is gap power, instead of home run power, and he'll live and die at the plate on his contact skills as his approach does not elicit many walks.

No, I did not have him confused with someone else. I know I've flagged his comments in the past, but it's pretty tough to do a search for him being a dick in general.
If anything, I was incorrect about how frequently he gets aggressive. Most often, he is perfectly unmemorable and fine in the threads.
But I remember his commentary in a fanshot some time in the past year, in which I went from thinking he was okay, to thinking he was a complete douche. Can’t remember keywords, else I’d find it.
Since then, I’ve noticed few occasions in gts where he is upset with the Sox/front office/whatever, and turns into SSH in a way.
A couple weeks ago, upset by Freddy’s awful start, he got pissed that Chiburb suggested everyone should relax, it was our 5th starter after all. From there, he became aggressive and pissed off, repeatedly picking on the 5th starter comment…. bringing it up again and again and again, just to be a jerk. This was also the first time I called him out on the ridiculous provoking.
What set me off the other night, aside from his ongoing shitty negativity regarding the game and Manny being benched, was his reply to HH that night (“good for you.”). Just unnecessary bs. We’re all watching the same team and frustrated by the same crap.
Admittedly, I was in just bad enough of a mood that night to not let it slide.
And his very unnecessary comment telling me to “shut my cunt” was way overboard, though I was not offended. Just in line with what a jerk he is, in my opinion.

he's second or third among AL 1Bs in every meaningful stat (WAR, wOBA, wRC, OPS)
and when he’s third, Youkilis is in second, so Konerko should get the nod for still being on the field and will probably surpass him anyway. Cabrera’s obviously at the top, but Paulie’s been the second best 1B in the AL this year.
As for MVP, he’s top 4 in all the hitting categories, but gets killed in WAR for his defense and ends up 12th.
But he can scoop!

that WAR ranking for Konerko is just among hitters. Including pitchers, he’d be tied for 19th with Gavin Floyd (8th among pitchers).
Alexei and Rios are tied for 15th in AL WAR among hitters, 30th overall, and Danks is 12th among pitchers and 26th overall.

so a shortstop that can consistently field balls in the hole and up the middle would have more range than a first baseman who fields balls in a 6 foot radius

it's mostly because defensive statistics aren't all that reliable for a given year.
which is why we constantly say don’t rely on just one year, rely on three.
The eye test fails for range because most defensive plays are sure things one way or another (ie a play everyone makes or a play no one makes)
The plays in which some fielder make the play and some don’t are rare so it is hard to compare one fielder to the next.

range factor, iirc, is not based on stringer data
it’s just a composite of plays made without any idea where the ball was or how it was hit.

i don't think anyone's saying he's all that different from years past
the point is that 1B are 1B because they can’t play 3rd, 2nd, SS, CF, RF, LF, or catcher. in the whole WAR calculation, defense is divided up into how you did at your position and then how your position does compared to other positions. first basemen, for instance, are estimated to be about 15 runs worse at defense than third basemen. so if Konerko is 5 runs above average at first base, he’s still 10 runs worse than the average 3B.

all i can say is there’s a lot of noise in the data and that takes time to sort through. it’s similar to (but not as bad as) BABIP. we used to say that there’s no BABIP skill for pitchers. now we say there is, but it’s very small. it took longitudinal studies (rather than mere year-to-year correlations) to demonstrate that. the smaller the correlation, the more data you need to see it show through. i don’t think the data for UZR is biased in particular, especially not for infielders where park effects are basically nil and groundballs are very easy to identify.

and you can tell about how much it matters. check out home and away BABIP for the Twins while they were in the dome and you’ll probably see a significant bump at home.
the number of astroturf fields is at 1 now isn’t it? that’s why i went with “basically nil”. the new fieldturf stuff is as similar to grass as the team installing it wants, i’d guess.

it's important to recognize
that different things become statistically significant at different points. in addition, often players play better or worse and defense is no exception to that. why is paul konerko’s batting average from each of the past three years .240, .277 and .320? why are his home runs 22, 28 and 33 (and counting)? is that subjectivity? variance? talent?
Which is where pretty much all the MVP candidates are coming from.

What I'm saying is
that despite the actual, practical, real-world value of the stats (like WAR, FIP, xFIP, etc) the voters for the awards don’t value them as highly as they should.
I KNOW that Pujols/Votto/Hamilton are the leaders for WAR and are the three best players in baseball this year. My point was i don’t think they will get MVP votes because of their WAR, but because of their traditional stat line.
It was a comment on the stats the voters think are the most important, not the ones that are in fact more accurate.

I’m no expert but almost everything I’ve read is that renewable energy is not profitable enough to stand on its own. Doesn’t produce enough power to justify the cost of the inferstructure. Maybe one day it will but until then, it’s the taxpaying public subsidizing it.

It was sizable. Much of it due to zoning regulations and cities’ unwillingness to charge more than a few bucks at parking meters.
Here in Chicago we have a solution to that
Sell the revenue from public parking to an investment bank at considerable less than it’s worth!
Even at the current prices, we are way underpaying

it shouldn't be surprising that a guy who has improved his mechanics is getting better movement and, potentially, velocity on his pitches.
pitch f/x often has trouble deciding whether a pitch is a cutter or slider because they’re quite similar (i’d also note that i wouldn’t take velocity as gospel, either, because there are differences in the readings at different parks). talk to players from, say, 30 year ago or earlier and they’d tell you that a cutter is really just a slider. categorizing the pitch as one or the other isn’t really all that relevant. the point is that jackson isn’t throwing anything different; he’s just throwing it better.
