White Sox Minor League Update: Snowbird Edition
The Arizona Fall League begins tomorrow, October 4. As a reminder, White Sox prospects play for the Mesa Solar Sox. The participants are:
SP Terry Doyle
RP Jacob Petricka*
RP Nevin Griffith
RP Brandon Kloess
C Mike Blanke [recently added]
*Note that me calling someone a relief pitcher is simply what role they will likely have in the AFL, not what I am projecting them to be in the future.
The fall instructional league has been going on for a couple weeks now. Various writers have attended these games and Keith Law tweeted a couple notes about Petricka and Griffith as they warmed up for the AFL:
While we'll have to wait until November for the various winter leagues (Venezuela, Dominican and Puerto Rico) to get going, there is some other baseball action that is of some interest. The baseball World Cup began last weekend. On the USA team is OF Jordan Danks, INF Andrew Garcia and P Justin Cassell. Their first game against Japan was postponed so tonight's game against Puerto Rico is their opener. You can follow that tournament here:White Sox rhp [Jake] Petricka 91-96 but no offspeed pitch. Threw just one slider that didn't break
White Sox rhp Nevin Griffith 92-96 here in instructs. Needs a better second pitch

For the second time in as many seasons, White Sox catching prospect Josh Phegley won’t start the Arizona Fall League season on time.
Phegley was scheduled to have his sore left wrist examined Wednesday, one day after the AFL begins play. Phegley could rejoin his Mesa Solar Sox teammates later this fall if his ailment is diagnosed as minor.
the afl doesnt really matter though, right?

reed is minor league reliever of the year
“It’s a combination of fastball velocity and the deception in his delivery,” Perdew said. “The ball kind of jumps out of his hand — he’s got a dip-and-drive delivery. It takes off on hitters up in zone a lot. And third, he’s got really good fastball command. And a pretty good slider with good break. That’s four good reasons why he gets a lot of swings and misses.”

which prospect lists should you trust?
well, here’s one measure.

that's a terrible analysis and methodology
its a one year snapshot and the weighting seems to be contrived to heavily favor the author’s own list.
that and a guy like Casey Kelly was projected to be in the bigs no sooner then 2012. yeah, he’s got 0 WAR so far. meh?
agreed.
but, iirc from last year, i think he does it for every year PP put out a list. he’s just starting with 2010. and since the single year bias is blatantly obvious, it really doesn’t concern me. the weighting, on the other hand, strikes me as more problematic.
What problem do you have with the weighting larry?

well, i'd have to think about it more than i really want to. and i don't know if there is one right way to do it.
but i think the 150% to 51% is not how i’d do it. -1 between each doesn’t seem right. higher ranked prospects should (theoretically) be worth more than that.
Well, let me know if you have any ideas. I think the 1% gaps work pretty well.

You're not evaluating the lists in the context they were written
Those lists were written as estimates of all future value for the prospects or, at least, their first six years of major league service. A large amount of those prospects are not expected to be in the majors for several seasons yet your analysis removes points for those players.
The evaluation you carried out reads more like a rating of top rated prospects in their first season of pro-ball. If that’s what you’re looking do, this could be a reasonable analysis.
it should be weighted by expected value
those studies have been done, perhaps without ideal granularity.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.
Yeah, I think I've seen these before
I feel like I’ve even seen one that did its expected value calculations with an age curve and compared based on year in majors which is best, I think.
Points are not taken away for players who have yet to reach the majors.
I went through the same exercise for 2007: http://projectprospect.com/article/2011/11/05/battle-of-the-2007-top-100s
AdamWFoster on Twitter
Projectprospect.com Founder
And 2008: http://projectprospect.com/article/2011/11/07/battle-of-the-2008-top-100s
AdamWFoster on Twitter
Projectprospect.com Founder
Okay, I misread this line
Players who appeared on every list but one had their value (with an added 50% WAR multiplier) subtracted
from that list’s total value.
But because you are not making an apples to apples comparison, your analysis remains flawed. You should be comparing on years in majors NOT calendar years. Harper is probably the best prospect in the game and he might not make the majors because he’s 19. Any list that has him at #1 now can not get the 150% bonus for him. Or if you do it three years from now, he might only have one year in the majors by then.
i'm not sure if that's the way to do that
there’s a reason why he’s number 1 despite his age. scouts know how old he is. i think a straight weighting system separating by pitcher or position player is the way to go.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.
crap burger
I’m not going to penalize a list because its got Harper at #1 instead of whoever was best in AAA last year. The purpose of the ranking system devised by project prospect is, as larry originally said, to determine which prospect list is most trustworthy. Under that premise, any list that has a highly ranked and not expected to be in the majors prospect will be at a disadvantage even though that list may be correct.
How do you reconcile that?
ah, okay. i think i misunderstood.
in that case, you should be weighting by past results. barring that, i’m not sure you should try. being an outlier is fine if you’re actually better. for instance, a ranking that heavily penalized pitchers would probably be a lot more accurate, but it would deviate substantially from the norm.
the more interesting project in that case is to figure out which lists have which tendencies. the pitcher/position player bit is a really easy call given what we know. but who prefers projectability over performance? who gives more credence to age and league? that’s the kind of thing that interests me.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.

on brandon kloess
Kloess, 26, hopes to follow Dylan Axelrod as Windy City ThunderBolts alums who resurrected their professional careers after being shunned by major league teams.
“I’m just living the dream,” said Kloess, who was a combined 7-4 with a 1.92 ERA in 39 appearances at the Class A, Double-A and Triple-A levels in 2011 after going undrafted in 2008 following his senior year at Florida Atlantic. "I never really wanted to stop. I had an injury in college that slowed me down, but I kept going out there wanting to play.
“I still love the game and didn’t want to stop at that point.”
The incentive is even greater for Kloess, who has impressed scouts with a deceptive fastball that has helped him strike out 13 in his first 81/3 innings in the AFL, including four strikeouts in 11/3 innings against Surprise on Oct. 24.

So our guys now quote Miley Cyrus?
FFS.
The sun on the balcony is almost unbearable, worse than the booing fans in Chicago shedding miserable light on his failures at work.
Terry Doyle is a righty in the Chicago White Sox organization.
Doyle presents an interesting starting pitching option for the White Sox. He is a control pitcher with a quick-paced, solid delivery and an ability to manage his game very well. Doyle pitched over two classifications in 2011. He started 11 games at Class A Winston-Salem, where he compiled a 2.84 ERA. Moving to the Double-A Birmingham club in the Southern League, Doyle threw 100 innings over 15 starts. He walked only 22 and struck out 73. His command and control will advance his career. He is the type of pitcher who can be trusted to take his starts at least three times through the lineup.
Doyle throws a low-90s fastball, but his bread and butter appears to be a full repertoire including a very solid slider, a low-80s curve and an effective changeup.
Doyle projects as a back-of-the-rotation starter who can work following a higher-velocity power pitcher. He has the type of delivery and mechanics that could cause the opposition frustration working quickly and changing speeds consistently.

some hot prospects coming our way baby!
The White Sox have agreed to terms with free agent left-handed pitchers Donnie Veal and Jose Quintana.
Veal, 27, combined to go 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA (15 ER/32.0 IP) and 31 strikeouts in 19 appearances (five starts) between Class A Bradenton, Class AA Altoona, Class AAA Indianapolis and Rookie Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2011. He did not pitch until May 22 while recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 4, 2010.
Quintana, 22, spent the entire 2011 season with Class A Tampa in the Yankees farm system, going 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA (33 ER/102.0 IP), one save and 88 strikeouts in 30 appearances (14 starts). He limited opponents to a .236 (86-364) average and was 6-1 with a 2.83 ERA (20 ER/63.2 IP) as a starter.
