hazy will probably have to boot a negligent owner and then you can get in.
the Mets have been abandoned for 51 days and San Diego for 21.
if youre looking to compete fairly quickly, be wary of the mets
in what is showing to be a powerhouse of a division, the mets are, well, the mets.

everything cost under $6 million at the start of the season. it was $4 mil for the medical.
We could cap it at 5 mil if a majority agreed.

holy shit
2 sims left in the regular season and only 4 teams are in the black on the year:
craig’s mysteries at 6.3M
rhubarb’s cubs at 5.8M
the cpu run rangers at 1.8M
and my IX at 52K.
3 sensible owners in the central while the rest of you are collecting food stamps for your ramen and milwaukee’s best. not really, basically everyone has the cash to cover it, but wow.
the previous owner/CPU in SD gave out some awful contracts and had tickets at 30% (only selling roughly 60% of tickets)
I just renegotiated a bunch and cut some slackers. SD would have made a profit of $8M this year under these current expenses.
by Shoeless In SC on Dec 24, 2011 9:15 AM CST up reply actions
I'm thinking that the expense cap needs to happen.
15 million max, distributed however you like it. Those caught going over the max would be penalized the amount that they are over. Thoughts? Opposition? Reading up on it, it seems a lot of other leagues do something similar.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
i think you should be able to have an A+ across the board if you can afford it.
so if you cap it, i’d prefer 5 at each.
also, if you bank say, 100M of LAD money, I think the free agent demands would be much more reasonable. then he can draw from that as need be. It seemed like the 5M you handed out to everyone really made contract demands go up across the board.
I don't see the point
You can be top 4 by spending $6M on each, so there not much savings to be had by limiting it to $15 total.

by Shoeless In SC on Dec 24, 2011 7:58 AM CST up reply actions
i'd like it to be capped, 15 million across the board.
things will start to get silly otherwise. they already are.
i think its a good thing to eat up the large money people have saved up
its getting goofy now, but if only 33% of us are turning a profit the bubble will pop and it should come down.
i don't have that much money saved, really.
my budget limit is crazy low, so i need to get a winning team out there to increase revenue. best way to do that is to spend on the farm and scouting. i was hoping to save up a big hunk of cash so that i can actually afford to keep some of the prospects i have.
but yeah, hopefully it’ll balance itself out.
i really wish the budget took your cash on hand into account
I couldnt even sign a FA until after the trade deadline because my expected revenue was so far off from where it should have been.
anyone know how to maintain high fan loyalty?
Man, if there were media in these sims, they'd be going nuts over the incoming nlcs series.

It took a monster deal, but I acquired the #5 overall pick from Detroit, Daniel Frechette
Took sending Lastings Milledge, left fielder Quincy Overmyer, center fielder Adam Klimek, first baseman Fran Fleming, relievers Brian Davila and Leon Cordova. Davila and Cordova hurt the worst, but Frechette is going to be amazing.

i would be willing to deal one of my starting pitching prospects (the ones in my minors)
for a top reliever.
i’m thinking one of pueyo, pulido or douglas. each of whom has a potential of 98.
incidentally, i'd prefer it if they were under team-control for a couple of seasons.
my budget ain’t that big.
i would do, but they are a couple of years off.
i’d like someone i could rely on to post an era round about 3 (hopefully lower).
I need pitching prospects
Take a look
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
so i kicked the tires on this vice-commissioner thing
I was going to see if I could help out a couple cpu teams in debt.
i saw a few SPs with crippling deals were willing to extend on the cheap-
Peavy for 5m through 2020
Zambrano for 5.9, etc, so I did that.
They both were going to get that same money this season so I deferred it basically, then added a year so if you trade for the discounted pitchers you are saddled with their old asses for an additional season.
Then I wanted to help the Sox, so I was going to make Peralta cost about 10M less.
Instead I cut him. He was making 23M, now he wants 14M to sign as a FA.
My guess of $10M was reasonable enough. I could have put him back on the team at that rate, but no. He sucks, the Sox deserve better.
Thats when I started to get drunk on power. The Sox should be the best team in the AL, and who gives a shit because they are all sims anyway I reasoned to myself maniacally.
I started ass raping the computer run AL.
I looked for power hitters at every position and blatantly stole them. The only starter I was going to leave intact was Glen Bedroussian because his skillset reminded me of Ray Durham and I pictured him playing the lead off position.
I took the only CPU run starters with over 200 Ks last season and threw them on the Sox. Their payroll was crazy high so I tampered with contracts, too. Finally starting to feel like I was stepping over my bounds, I checked to make sure they wouldn’t be easy trade targets.
The Sox wanted a 2B. So instead of worrying about someone getting a shitload for a good 2B I stole the awesome 2B from the Yankees. I checked again and they wanted depth at SS so I had them sign my man Tony Giarratano because he played with heart for my nine. A true grinder who was getting overlooked this off-season in free agency. Now they say they want a 2B again. Probably because the former Yankee was still on the farm, I suspect that gets remedied tomorrow when he gets moved into the starting line up.
Basically, I made a team that can beat any of us in the World Series from cpu run parts.
I regret nothing.
Then I changed a few team names and called it a day.
Glad to see you've embraced the spirit of the thing.

the poll
6 votes yes, 3 no. 2 more for a majority since we only have 14 players.
looks like its going to be yes.
craig voted yes with one of the lowest player payrolls and highest expenses.
his sit at 24M so that seems like a good neighborhood to cap it in.
Lets say 5M for scouting since being behind there leads to a serious disadvantage and 10M for the other two categories, meaning it costs 25 large to maintain an A+ across the board.
Thoughts?
The majority has everything at the 5-6M range.
$25 seems high.
$20 for all three seems legit.

Short of keeping their cash on hand at zero, there isn’t anything we can do to control said costs with nearly half the league. Might be an exercise in futility as we all handicap ourselves.

I've noticed that several of you have made a few moves with the computer AI.
I don’t disapprove of any of them, but for future reference can you guys all do me a favor please? If you make a deal with the computer, post it here. We all know that there has been some inequity with computer deals in the past. This will give us a degree of transparency and allow the rest of the league to voice any concerns. The game’s “newspaper” posts many of them, but not all of them.
Thanks all.

I like this idea
It will show what is possible when dealing with the cpu for those constantly frustrated by
That deal is good but it gives me a bit too much at one position.
I don't know how you guys do it.
I’ve been trying to make what I think are fair deals with the CPU for the past 20 minutes and I’m ready to jump out the window. But it’s good that the computer is so stingy. I don’t think anyone is going to pull a fast one, at least based on what I experience.
i've done a few, but you really do have to give up one of your best players or prospects to get anything done.
I'd like to call to everyone's attention that craig targets first round pitching prospects from other teams in order to rebuild
it seems usually that first round prospects will become studs. Look at his rotation and check the transaction section. 1st rounders, all of them traded for in 2016.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
also, as you can see below in the second trade I listed
it seems like volume sometimes gets trades completed. The only guy I even cared about losing was Cottle and he was expendable because of my starting 2B Wildburger being under team control for a while
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
and i gave up a crapload to get 'em too. tanked my entire organisation for years.
ambrarian, who is now on the robotic white sox, was my best player and i used him to get a couple of ’em.
my worst was trading for a guy, but i sent the wrong person over by mistake
I had to give more to get my bench guy back, then I made a third trade to still get my dude and got fucked, basically cleared out the farm. i rebuilt it asap, but still it was costly because i was attached to the fake player i sent by mistake.
Yes, to all of this
I wasn’t insinuating you ripped the computer off. It takes time, tinkering, giving up to get and sometimes cash. That 2 million I included in the Yankees trade is what made it happen. I was real short on pitching depth, organization wide. While I no longer have hitting depth my major league roster is set for the next 3 or 4 years so I really hope to get some good position players in the next few drafts and as you all know…I will probably draft relief pitchers.

i just spent half an hour trying to finagle someone, but i can't get further than 'very close' without getting ripped off.
i wondered how he suddenly went 10-0.
i have made the mistake of getting attached to my players coming up through the system.
i guess i’ll have to react.

finally got viera from boston. took me days.
had to hand over :
fernandez
mueller
d’albora
kellenbarger
wood
noseda
and (this appeared to be the clincher – $10M)
i got viera
assis
norris
and petty
besides viera, they basically traded me potential for players that were already highly-rated or performing well.
i am a bit confused, as, as i said, i had tried for days with all kinds of permutations without them coughing him up.
i wonder if it was his being on the dl that shifted things.
it will also cost me a sodding fortune to extend his contract next year.
hope i can win enough to afford him.
Was Viera injured before you traded for him?
Might be a glitch in the program that devalues players when injured.

they then immediately flipped fernandez to texas. weird.
i am pretty sure d’albora will be a good get for them, for some reason he just wouldn’t hit in pittsburgh.
I was wondering why fernandez wasn't on their roster
I’ll admit that I checked your roster to see if you had traded for him following the orignal.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
fair enough.
he annoyed me with his diminishing returns, so i’d been trying to find a better 1B for a while.
i also tried to get ambarian back to pittsburgh from the sox machine, but i wasn’t quite so gung-ho because of his age and contract.
as with d’albora, i would not be at all surprised to see fernandez start hitting around .300 again.
I'll post here in the future
I made two, three? deals with the CPU yesterday to acquire some pitching. The CPU is frickin’ stingy with its demands, but at least it tells you what positions it wants. The last trade I pulled off, the CPU wanted a utility infielder. I put one in there, and the CPU replied that it gave it too much at one position. So, I offered two more utility infielders for a grand total of 3 IFs. That trade was accepted. Go figure.

Nat Ostroff RP-24 (75++)
$1,000,000

Grienke’s contract demand was for 4.5 in an extension when I looked at Seattle, then when he got to St. Louis it cost twice that. Everyone hates St. Louis.
if you extend a contract in the final year

I've wanted to start a league with minimum minor league roster requirements.
Would anyone have any interest in that?
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
It would just be a league in which you had to have a full minor league system
All of your batting and pitcher slots would have to be filled before opening day each season. There would of course be a lot of shitty organizational filler, but it would lean more to the realistic side than what we’re doing here.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
is there a way (if people are indeed interested) to make that a requirement in this league?

"Rhubarb, if you wouldn’t mind, ram your taint into your monitor as hard as you can." - joewho112
With so many players running minimum rosters here now, I'm assuming that there would be little interest amongst the active players
but I could be wrong.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"

i was just thinking that its hard enough keeping up with one team, let alone a second team
but i think id try it regardless.
"Rhubarb, if you wouldn’t mind, ram your taint into your monitor as hard as you can." - joewho112
full rosters would suck because your good players would be handcuffed in low A or whatever
if you want to have 2 players at each position in the minors, fine.
4? that’s excessive.
By the way, you're all welcome.
Last season I adjusted the salary demands hoping to make them a little more realistic. Seems I lowered them a bit too much, I’ll be adjusting them after free agency again. I’m hoping to find a happy medium. I also adjusted injury frequency, and that went up a bit more than I would have liked, that I’ll adjust before the season begins. However, I’m not taking it back to where it was, so those of you spending zero on medical will still have to deal with the consequences of that decision.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"

Thanks for lowering injury.
Not that I had chances of competing, but I had close to 500 DL days last season with A- medical.

I’m just trying to find a balance between fun and reality. It’s set at zero adjustment now, which roughly translates to, total realism. That seems a little too real for a game,

Shoeless, I'm going to have to review these... you've dumped a lot of salary today for players you can just technically cut for free...
I’m going to need to see a bit more salary balance with cpu trades I think, otherwise we’re back to scamming the system.
I’m going to pause the sim while I review the trades.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"

Actually
Never mind,
A.) I forgot that you just took over San Diego and some of these contracts you would have had nothing to do with.
B.) I never made a clear case of what was expected out of computer trading.
With that being said, going forward, the computer can’t be used for salary dumps, regardless of whether or not the AI accepts the deal.

i gave them A Rod's 25M or whatever it was
didnt get much back but still.
I think Pettitte, too.
Others followed suit.
They turned into a massive salary dump for the large market teams to dump their unwanted contracts.
The blowback was so massive it basically wrecked the last league as large market teams and small market teams chose sides and led to computer trading being banned. Which is why it was when we first started this league. However, with this many cpu ran teams, it’s impractical to make half the league’s players unavailable for trade.
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
haha even still
the comp barely trades its players away! woof.
"Rhubarb, if you wouldn’t mind, ram your taint into your monitor as hard as you can." - joewho112
That's the problem.
It doesn’t understand salary equity. You can trade high salary guys for league minimum salary and release whatever players you acquire for little to no penalty.

-Duck99
This is a big part of why we offered the contract amnesties
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
I recall the Texas debacle from the first league.
I don’t think my recent trades are anywhere near that level. The CPU got market to slightly above market deals for players, plus organizational depth, and gave up relief prospects, and in one case, an outfielder.
The above trade for the outfielder I kinda regret a little, actually. Pescatore was going to be a solid bullpen piece and Duke/Reed had very solid years last season. If I weren’t in full rebuilding mode I could have probably competed to around 80-85 wins with the same players I had last season. But that’s not good enough for me.
by Shoeless In SC on Jan 10, 2012 6:22 PM CST up reply actions
additionally, whomever had SD last (or the CPU)
signed Caldera to a ridiculously awful one-year contract. He was too good to let walk so I extended him at a discount. Still, because of that massive contract he had, he didn’t take too much of a discount.
Reed and Garza were pretty much the same deal.

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 11, 2012 7:08 PM CST up reply actions
The main guy from my side in each trade is a former 1st round pick with experience making league min.
The relievers I got haven’t pitched above A. Seems fair. I also spend zero on scouting, so those ratings could be way off.
I'm looking at the trade from an A scouting perspective
and it looks bad. Those guys you gave up are bench filler and in return you got two potential closers.
That’s what I’m seeing.
by Shoeless In SC on Jan 11, 2012 7:42 PM CST up reply actions
i see no problem with that.
"Rhubarb, if you wouldn’t mind, ram your taint into your monitor as hard as you can." - joewho112
I don't see a gamble, really.
Only one of the guys he gave up has any potential left (albeit a little) and he’s an awful, awful defender.
Yeeeech.

Gus and I will take a closer look at it.
Seems a little off, but I don’t know enough about the particulars
"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"
-Duck99
Above, you traded a 33-yo bench player making $4.3M (88 rating) plus a reliever with a 4.70 ERA last season
for a “potential closer”. Are my trades that much different? It’s a little soon to call what I gave up bench filler. Early-round picks have been known to break out once they age a bit and get regular playing time.
yeah, I see the difference.
The CPU paid $ for the player I gave him, but that 33-yo bench player, as you call him, is one of the better defensive SS’s in the league and has 90’s across the board in the defensive categories. He’s also a career .296/.352/.361 hitter. He could start on several teams. The reliever I gave him is only 26, and after last year has a 3.87 ERA in his short career with a .240 OBA. That’s pretty solid. The guy I got in return is 18, rated in the 50’s, and probably a good 4+ years away from the bigs.
by Shoeless In SC on Jan 11, 2012 8:45 PM CST up reply actions
The Angels should be alerted to how good Sanders is
because he’s mistakenly been placed in the 4th bench spot. After being on your bench last season. Any difference in the group of players we gave up (I don’t see it to be as drastic as you do) is made up for by the fact that you cleared $5M of payroll.
Your trades, in my opinion, are completely fine
If all ++++ relievers made it there would be such a shortage of them? Besides, I could have used any one of those players on MY bench.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
Even if you or Hazy think it's somewhat one-sided, you can reverse it.
Shoeless has done several trades with the CPU and thinks I got away with one. These are the first trades I’ve completed that weren’t bad contract for bad contract. Maybe I got lucky.
I think you got very lucky
in that you gave the CPU exactly what it was looking for and it gave up what you asked for in return.
I think you should be ashamed of ripping off Cyberdyne. You hear me?! Ashamed!

I was like, "Huh? What is he talking about? How did he get Caldera?"
Then I remembered I offered him to you like a week ago. Cool. Pleasure doing business with ya

trade made, and it only took 45 minutes of excruciating pain to do it.
The St. Louis IX offer
Jason Repko OF-38 (90)
Mark Wilcock 3B-29 (86)
Adam Wainwright SP-37 (82)
$5,000,000
to the Detroit Tigers for
Jon Swartz CF-28 (73)
Brad Chiste RP-20 (75++)
they wanted a starting third baseman and a utility outfielder, but somehow got a starter and 5M to go with it for two guys on the green trading block. Bastards.
I find it hilarious that Repko, newly signed off the wire, is desireable for them
Looks like you were able to reduce payroll and get a quality pen guy, kudos.

it hurts my depth but makes me sustainable going forward.
but as you said, i trimmed quite a bit of payroll so if hazy wants to reverse it Im ok with that.
hazy
the season is starting, are you going to turn down the injury settings or make any changes to salary demands or anything like that?
it wouldnt hurt so bad if I didnt JUST TRADE the SOB that cried his way out of town.
hazy, I cut 15M from my payroll in that deal!
you should totally reverse it!
oh well.
I was wondering how you had payroll flexibilty on March 30th
To sign Harrison

Yeah, I spaced it.
Lost a guy in my rotation for 100-something days too. I reduced it by 10 percent.

well it looks like you dont pay guys on the DL so thats good
My projected expense doesnt reflect his salary.
So Heath Bell has a 135.00 ERA after one outing (0.1 IP, 5H, 5ER, 1HR, 1K)
Hee.

My catcher, Tom Vessels, hit five HR's in six games.
He’s the new Chris Shelton

curse you pythagoras!
why can’t first basemen hit in pittsburgh? my former incumbent is off to a flyer in texas.
also, my fellow ginger was right; a new thread would be nice.
what do you have against us?
