The North Side Sox

are doing it with smoke and mirrors. But when they go splat there will still be 4 good teams in the division. Rough.

holy shit

2 sims left in the regular season and only 4 teams are in the black on the year:
craig’s mysteries at 6.3M
rhubarb’s cubs at 5.8M
the cpu run rangers at 1.8M
and my IX at 52K.

3 sensible owners in the central while the rest of you are collecting food stamps for your ramen and milwaukee’s best. not really, basically everyone has the cash to cover it, but wow.

by e-gus on Dec 24, 2011 12:50 AM CST reply actions

the previous owner/CPU in SD gave out some awful contracts and had tickets at 30% (only selling roughly 60% of tickets)

I just renegotiated a bunch and cut some slackers. SD would have made a profit of $8M this year under these current expenses.

by Shoeless In SC on Dec 24, 2011 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking that the expense cap needs to happen.

15 million max, distributed however you like it. Those caught going over the max would be penalized the amount that they are over. Thoughts? Opposition? Reading up on it, it seems a lot of other leagues do something similar.

i think you should be able to have an A+ across the board if you can afford it.

so if you cap it, i’d prefer 5 at each.

also, if you bank say, 100M of LAD money, I think the free agent demands would be much more reasonable. then he can draw from that as need be. It seemed like the 5M you handed out to everyone really made contract demands go up across the board.

by e-gus on Dec 24, 2011 2:24 AM CST up reply actions

I don't see the point

You can be top 4 by spending $6M on each, so there not much savings to be had by limiting it to $15 total.

by Shoeless In SC on Dec 24, 2011 7:58 AM CST up reply actions

i'd like it to be capped, 15 million across the board.

i think its a good thing to eat up the large money people have saved up

its getting goofy now, but if only 33% of us are turning a profit the bubble will pop and it should come down.

by e-gus on Dec 24, 2011 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

i don't have that much money saved, really.

my budget limit is crazy low, so i need to get a winning team out there to increase revenue. best way to do that is to spend on the farm and scouting. i was hoping to save up a big hunk of cash so that i can actually afford to keep some of the prospects i have.
but yeah, hopefully it’ll balance itself out.

by craigws on Dec 24, 2011 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

i really wish the budget took your cash on hand into account

I couldnt even sign a FA until after the trade deadline because my expected revenue was so far off from where it should have been.

It took a monster deal, but I acquired the #5 overall pick from Detroit, Daniel Frechette

Took sending Lastings Milledge, left fielder Quincy Overmyer, center fielder Adam Klimek, first baseman Fran Fleming, relievers Brian Davila and Leon Cordova. Davila and Cordova hurt the worst, but Frechette is going to be amazing.

so i kicked the tires on this vice-commissioner thing

I was going to see if I could help out a couple cpu teams in debt.
i saw a few SPs with crippling deals were willing to extend on the cheap-
Peavy for 5m through 2020
Zambrano for 5.9, etc, so I did that.
They both were going to get that same money this season so I deferred it basically, then added a year so if you trade for the discounted pitchers you are saddled with their old asses for an additional season.

Then I wanted to help the Sox, so I was going to make Peralta cost about 10M less.
Instead I cut him. He was making 23M, now he wants 14M to sign as a FA.
My guess of $10M was reasonable enough. I could have put him back on the team at that rate, but no. He sucks, the Sox deserve better.

Thats when I started to get drunk on power. The Sox should be the best team in the AL, and who gives a shit because they are all sims anyway I reasoned to myself maniacally.
I started ass raping the computer run AL.

I looked for power hitters at every position and blatantly stole them. The only starter I was going to leave intact was Glen Bedroussian because his skillset reminded me of Ray Durham and I pictured him playing the lead off position.

I took the only CPU run starters with over 200 Ks last season and threw them on the Sox. Their payroll was crazy high so I tampered with contracts, too. Finally starting to feel like I was stepping over my bounds, I checked to make sure they wouldn’t be easy trade targets.

The Sox wanted a 2B. So instead of worrying about someone getting a shitload for a good 2B I stole the awesome 2B from the Yankees. I checked again and they wanted depth at SS so I had them sign my man Tony Giarratano because he played with heart for my nine. A true grinder who was getting overlooked this off-season in free agency. Now they say they want a 2B again. Probably because the former Yankee was still on the farm, I suspect that gets remedied tomorrow when he gets moved into the starting line up.

Basically, I made a team that can beat any of us in the World Series from cpu run parts.
I regret nothing.
Then I changed a few team names and called it a day.

6 votes yes, 3 no. 2 more for a majority since we only have 14 players.
looks like its going to be yes.

craig voted yes with one of the lowest player payrolls and highest expenses.
his sit at 24M so that seems like a good neighborhood to cap it in.
Lets say 5M for scouting since being behind there leads to a serious disadvantage and 10M for the other two categories, meaning it costs 25 large to maintain an A+ across the board.
Thoughts?

The majority has everything at the 5-6M range.

The problem I'm seeing is going to be controlling the computer controlled clubs.

Short of keeping their cash on hand at zero, there isn’t anything we can do to control said costs with nearly half the league. Might be an exercise in futility as we all handicap ourselves.

I don’t disapprove of any of them, but for future reference can you guys all do me a favor please? If you make a deal with the computer, post it here. We all know that there has been some inequity with computer deals in the past. This will give us a degree of transparency and allow the rest of the league to voice any concerns. The game’s “newspaper” posts many of them, but not all of them.

I'd like to call to everyone's attention that craig targets first round pitching prospects from other teams in order to rebuild

it seems usually that first round prospects will become studs. Look at his rotation and check the transaction section. 1st rounders, all of them traded for in 2016.

by e-gus on Jan 4, 2012 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, to all of this

I wasn’t insinuating you ripped the computer off. It takes time, tinkering, giving up to get and sometimes cash. That 2 million I included in the Yankees trade is what made it happen. I was real short on pitching depth, organization wide. While I no longer have hitting depth my major league roster is set for the next 3 or 4 years so I really hope to get some good position players in the next few drafts and as you all know…I will probably draft relief pitchers.

I'll post here in the future

I made two, three? deals with the CPU yesterday to acquire some pitching. The CPU is frickin’ stingy with its demands, but at least it tells you what positions it wants. The last trade I pulled off, the CPU wanted a utility infielder. I put one in there, and the CPU replied that it gave it too much at one position. So, I offered two more utility infielders for a grand total of 3 IFs. That trade was accepted. Go figure.

Look at the AL West. Can’t believe a team out of that division gets a playoff berth, but a 99 win team in the NL East doesn’t. I’m half tempted to move all of Florida’s 25 man to Texas, just so they can participate!

(I had B+ scouting btw)

I really needed starting pitching and I had 2 shortstops so I got SP Schisselman (87) 4yrs/$6.2M straight up from Minn. for SS Parra (94) 3 yrs./$3.9M

As an experiment I wanted see what it took to pry a 1st rounder SP from the computer,
I got 7th overall pick SP Campagno 77(95) from OAK for 19th overall pick SP Delmorales 71(94) and 4 other organizational filler guys with upsides in the low 80s.

It would just be a league in which you had to have a full minor league system

All of your batting and pitcher slots would have to be filled before opening day each season. There would of course be a lot of shitty organizational filler, but it would lean more to the realistic side than what we’re doing here.

By the way, you're all welcome.

Last season I adjusted the salary demands hoping to make them a little more realistic. Seems I lowered them a bit too much, I’ll be adjusting them after free agency again. I’m hoping to find a happy medium. I also adjusted injury frequency, and that went up a bit more than I would have liked, that I’ll adjust before the season begins. However, I’m not taking it back to where it was, so those of you spending zero on medical will still have to deal with the consequences of that decision.

They turned into a massive salary dump for the large market teams to dump their unwanted contracts.

The blowback was so massive it basically wrecked the last league as large market teams and small market teams chose sides and led to computer trading being banned. Which is why it was when we first started this league. However, with this many cpu ran teams, it’s impractical to make half the league’s players unavailable for trade.

I recall the Texas debacle from the first league.

I don’t think my recent trades are anywhere near that level. The CPU got market to slightly above market deals for players, plus organizational depth, and gave up relief prospects, and in one case, an outfielder.

The above trade for the outfielder I kinda regret a little, actually. Pescatore was going to be a solid bullpen piece and Duke/Reed had very solid years last season. If I weren’t in full rebuilding mode I could have probably competed to around 80-85 wins with the same players I had last season. But that’s not good enough for me.

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 10, 2012 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

additionally, whomever had SD last (or the CPU)

signed Caldera to a ridiculously awful one-year contract. He was too good to let walk so I extended him at a discount. Still, because of that massive contract he had, he didn’t take too much of a discount.

Reed and Garza were pretty much the same deal.

2018 was a good year for Mark in the power category. He sent 28 into the bleachers, knocking in 77 runners in 133 games played. Wilcock is a no-nonsense team player who makes the plays and gets the hits. A great player to have in the starting lineup. Wilcock doesn’t like riding the pine in St. Louis. He could probably play every day for the Giorgios.

The main guy from my side in each trade is a former 1st round pick with experience making league min.

The relievers I got haven’t pitched above A. Seems fair. I also spend zero on scouting, so those ratings could be way off.

by 3E8 on Jan 11, 2012 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

I'm looking at the trade from an A scouting perspective

and it looks bad. Those guys you gave up are bench filler and in return you got two potential closers.

That’s what I’m seeing.

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 11, 2012 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

i see no problem with that.

I don't see a gamble, really.

Only one of the guys he gave up has any potential left (albeit a little) and he’s an awful, awful defender.

Yeeeech.

Gus and I will take a closer look at it.

Seems a little off, but I don’t know enough about the particulars

"I'm holding out hope Reinsdorf can somehow use his amnesty clause on Rios"

by Hazymania on Jan 11, 2012 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

Above, you traded a 33-yo bench player making $4.3M (88 rating) plus a reliever with a 4.70 ERA last season

for a “potential closer”. Are my trades that much different? It’s a little soon to call what I gave up bench filler. Early-round picks have been known to break out once they age a bit and get regular playing time.

by 3E8 on Jan 11, 2012 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, I see the difference.

The CPU paid $ for the player I gave him, but that 33-yo bench player, as you call him, is one of the better defensive SS’s in the league and has 90’s across the board in the defensive categories. He’s also a career .296/.352/.361 hitter. He could start on several teams. The reliever I gave him is only 26, and after last year has a 3.87 ERA in his short career with a .240 OBA. That’s pretty solid. The guy I got in return is 18, rated in the 50’s, and probably a good 4+ years away from the bigs.

by Shoeless In SC on Jan 11, 2012 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

The Angels should be alerted to how good Sanders is

because he’s mistakenly been placed in the 4th bench spot. After being on your bench last season. Any difference in the group of players we gave up (I don’t see it to be as drastic as you do) is made up for by the fact that you cleared $5M of payroll.

by 3E8 on Jan 11, 2012 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

Your trades, in my opinion, are completely fine

If all ++++ relievers made it there would be such a shortage of them? Besides, I could have used any one of those players on MY bench.

by e-gus on Jan 11, 2012 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Even if you or Hazy think it's somewhat one-sided, you can reverse it.

Shoeless has done several trades with the CPU and thinks I got away with one. These are the first trades I’ve completed that weren’t bad contract for bad contract. Maybe I got lucky.

by 3E8 on Jan 11, 2012 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

I think you got very lucky

in that you gave the CPU exactly what it was looking for and it gave up what you asked for in return.

I think you should be ashamed of ripping off Cyberdyne. You hear me?! Ashamed!
