RRRR: Paniagua Panache
I plan on using this essay to make a number of things crystal fucking clear. Clearly, the handful of overpaid and almighty bloggers who write and run this site are nothing more than mental masturbating think-tanking propaganda machines. They are no better than the mainstream media, in fact they are worse! You know why? They are worse because they can’t get quotes from the actual baseball players and owe nothing to the franchise I would thankfully perish protecting. They can’t delve into the minutiae of the human levels of the organization because they don’t have any fucking access what-so-ever. Their stats don’t take into account the sociology of the game. What makes it even worse is they never, ever attempt to get at the clear truth of matters.
larry, margalus, colin, U-god…these fucking people exist for one purpose…to bend reality to conform to their unsavory blogging agendas. All they want to do is tell people how fucking stupid about baseball they are. They are the bullies in this pixilated hell. If I didn’t like the White Sox so much, I would never come here to argue with them. In fact, I feel it is my duty and fight against these villains so the old-way of of thinking from the gut never dies. Nevermind, I have nothing else better to do. If there is any reason for my existence, it is to prove these fools wrong. Never, will I actually listen to their half-baked theories. The fact that they believe they are above the constraints of quoting reliable sources and facts (yes, craig….facts) does a complete disservice to the game that I know and love better than anyone else. When they make me feel stupid by trying to force-feed me their ignorance, it is almost too much to handle. I eat my blood-pressure medicine like skittles and down a fifth of scotch but sadly still, I cannot put into words how wrong they are, even if words are all a blog and its commenters have. It is a sad state of affairs that I can’t argue this shit at a bar where I have my equally intelligent townie toughs to back me up both physically and mentally. I could totally kick their ass.
Frist, the White Sox will never win anything again because of KW. Yes, KW is the detriment to the baseball shrine I call the upperdeck of U.S. Cellular. KW probably reads at third grade level the way all his acquistions and trades have gone. He got so lucky in 2005 that I believe Selig convinced the other owners to allow the White Sox to win the World Series just to keep them relevant in case Ozzie Guillen were to leave town. Which he did by the way! If Ozzie never left then Buehrle never would have left either. Now we are stuck with Danks…a guy who won fewer than 10 games this year. How can a guy who wins fewer than 10 games get that kind of a contract! What an idiot KW is…I’ll bet Rick Hahn is seething that KW didn’t listen to him and trade Danks for Betances and Austin Romine. Poor Rick Hahn, how can he even be in the same room as KW?
Second, Peavy, Dunn and Rios…what can I say? I don’t think larry realizes that the White Sox will never win with these three albatross contracts (I say albatross because I can’t think of a better metaphor….what is an albatross?). Dunn will succumb to new lows next year, Rios will disrespect the game of baseball by using his millions to jetset around the country showing off his abs in expensive nightclubs and Peavy will never be the same! I mean Peavy’s experimental surgery should have fixed whatever was wrong with him! Its not like it take a long time to recover from surgery and get back to your old self now-a-days. The miracle of modern medicine has shown us time and time again that it fixes people for good and if it DOESN"T, that means I hate the person it didn’t work with. KW should have seen all this coming, what a piece of shit rat bastard.
Third, the only thing that the Danks extension made me do was look at the team we are going to have in 2014…how could you not?!? We as fans need to over-analyze and figure this out immediately. Where are the prospects that are going to be veterans by then? It is a shame that KW didn’t blow it up and get the best prospects in the game in return for all of our best players….I mean with Buehrle gone what chance do we have anyway? Now I have to sit here and watch an underachiever get 40 wins over the life of his 5 year contract. I don’t have all day! Get me a .300 hitter damnit. If only we had a .300 hitter and someone batting leadoff who could play defense and lay down a bunt. Instead KW had to waste all that money on a fat piece of crap with a history of on base percentage. New fangled stats…the new market inefficiency is putting fannies in the seats and with all this talk about getting that Cuban traitor they expect me to buy a Venchie plan? A 1/3 of our starters would be communists! The only way I am going to a game next year is if they give me half priced tickets or if I steal tickets from children. Instead I will be at home listening to Hawk, who should STILL be the general manager, and coming to this blog to force my grandiose presence on you small-minded infidels.
In conclusion, I am right and everyone is wrong, except that I used six paragraphs in an essay instead of the required five. Maybe if you ivory towers bloggers were more like me, we could be friends.

I haven't spent a thin dime since Veeck sold the team to you know who 32 years ago!
Jerry Reinsdorf caused Bill Veeck to be a chain smoker for decades, causing him to die in 1986. He then forced Harry Caray to leave the Sox, and caused him to hit his head on a table in a restaurant in 17 years later.
I hate Hawk. I hate Rongey. I hate anyone who does not share my blistering hate for everything related to the White Sox.

I believe many here, like Jim, can be better than the mainstream media. larry makes very intelligent analysis.
Their stats don’t take into account the sociology of the game. What makes it even worse is they never, ever attempt to get at the clear truth of matters.
That’s also true for all of us, the commenter and participants here. I do have noticed that sometimes in here there is a tendency to “mathematized” or “statistize” many aspects of baseball forgetting that baseball teams are constructed with humans, which brings human’s stuff, which is in many instances unpredictable (Véase Adam Dunn).

This is going to sound hipster but its reality
Mainstream corporatized america will never advance its culture. Its about keeping the status quo, recycling ideas without building upon them and force feeding mind numbing art on whoever feels the need to fit in around a watercooler or a kegger if you will. There is some edgy and groundbreaking work being done and that has been done in the last twenty years. Some of it was so damn good its become mainstream but then its soul or more properly, its original meaning gets sucked out of it. If the work either refuses to assimilate to the mainstream tide pulling it in or no one tries to assimilate it because it just will never feasibly make money…it is shunned by the core populace as not relevant and will never be mentioned in Vanity Fair or any other mainstream magazine. That is what is wrong here, everything is corporofascist. Creativity is being supressed in the mainstream, even consuming creativity is being suppressed. That is why Hollwood is such a shithole, its the shitfilled epicenter.

I'm okay with this. I've rather liked a lot of the shit that has happened creatively in
the past twenty years, as those were my so called “formative” years for being a youngin’ and shaping myself. Does it make me feel old that the albums from the early 90s are now 20 years old? Yes. Would I listen to more albums like that versus trying to get into dubstep or whatever the clubby crap is these days? Yes. Do I still try to listen to the modern equivalent of whatever “alternative” was back right before Q101 did its thing and you had to actually hunt shit out at record stores or try and catch 120 minutes? Yes, but I don’t have the time I used to be able to devote to such pursuits. There is plenty of great revolutionary stuff that is still coming out. I don’t think we see major popular music shifts the way we used to every decade or so, however you can’t say that Groups (or just a man) like Girl Talk can’t nowadays come in and wow everyone with something so completely awesome and “not mainstream” corporate, just like Reznor did with NIN back in my day.

Its not that i am complaining about money being made off of art
Its that real art is being raped and reproduced in a dumbed down fashion to make money and forcefed to mainstream culture. Then we get articles like the Vanity Fair article that completely dismisses the cultural innovations that HAVE taken place. You have to search for real art, if it was easy to find it would have corporate interests weaved into its fabric. Then you have people like yourself who protect or delegitimize any claims like mine as “hipster” in order to negate its validity because eeeeveryone hates a hipster who hates corporate america and the ruination of culture…if you enjoy the status quo. Basically, from what I have seen, if domeone claims something that goes against your belief system you label it hipster you generalizing piece of dull shit.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
there isn't a play or novel in the western canon
i would take over the wire or deadwood. in terms of both volume and quality of insight, there’s never been better art produced over the last 60 years. there’s never been more human beings with their basic needs met and the consequence is people talking about what it means to exist rather than wishing they had some bread. so there’s both more people to create art and more time for those people to do so. the industrial revolution/capitalism is responsible for that to a very significant degree.
and lest you suggest some previous period of Western history was somehow more productive, ask yourself what enabled that particular person to produce his art. Shakespeare lived in the most capitalist part of the most capitalist place in the world and is well known for being a very shrewd businessman.
how can you not enjoy the status quo? i have access to all the world’s art i care to have access to and if i so choose, i pay for it only if i think its quality is such that i should!
…this won’t end well and i sort of regret taking the bait, but i really really hate this line of argument.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.

We agree with each other
Like I was originally saying the Vanity Fair article is incorrect because the guy that wrote it doesn’t believe culture has advanced in the last 20 years. I was saying that is bullshit. Then again, what I am talking about is the bastardization of real art i.e. lady gaga, jersey shore, mission impossible or any show that has bit off the wire on network tv etc. what MOST people consume is complete recycled crap and that is why Vanity Fair publishes an article about the death of culture. Its the mainstream corporate shit that is easily accessible and that most citizens watch that is in the forefront and makes profits for the companies that put it out there, that shit inspires no one. Most people want to make their art, live comfortably doing it and have people see it. If it is deemed unfit by the people who make decisions on what is easily accessible it becomes difficult for an artist to do what he/she wants. They squelch creativity that can enrich consumers lives. Not everyone is curious enough or have the time to seek out the real shit.

What do you dislike about my argument?
I think you must have misunderstood me
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
Also, your response presupposes that I know nothing of history, society or culture
No shit the industrial revolution led to a blooming of the arts. You can read that in a text book. I never once said that any previous period was better off. If i believed what you thought i believed it would take us to cave art.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
it seemed to me like you were suggesting that it's hard to find good
art, which suggests that it’s not prevalent or is being squelched or what have you. i guessed the former originally, but apparently it’s the latter? i still disagree. good art is impossible to avoid. how many seinfeld reruns are on per day?
even a person with the worst taste in the world will inevitably like something a lot that i also like a great deal. if they like it differently than i do, it has nothing to do with its existence inside “corporate America” and everything to do with the fact that we’re very very different people with very very different priorities.
the ads and commentary they did or did not see about it are valuable at the margin, they’re not responsible for the wholesale creation of taste. e.g. it’s no accident that newspaper partisanship follows the political demographics of the given city.

White people have never been freer in this
country. Who is actually worse off? There’s lots I don’t like about the status quo, but the relative toothlessness of both the tea party and the Occupy folks compared to protest movements past isn’t a function of their being forcefully quelled. You get fascism when your elite lose political capital and are forced to negotiate w/ hate mongers. Ours are negotiating with idiots because voters are so well off (but not as well off as before) and hard working that all they know is they feel things have been handled poorly. They aren’t expert enough to actually pick the capable because they work so hard and enjoy what leisure time they have watching TV and taking care of their kids.
I agree that’s a big cultural problem. The technocrats have to be both very expert and very moral because they aren’t being watched very closely except by their own kind. On the other hand, I don’t see that leading to anything resembling fascism because I have faith in them to be extraordinarily expert and fairly moral. The academy does a pretty good job producing both good science and moral actors imo.

people are socially much more liberal.
if you look at polls over time in regards to social issues each subsequent generation takes a chip at the numbers. People are less overtly racist, support inter-racial marriage (still remarkebly high number against) and feelings towards homosexuals. The social conservatives have gotten louder, but smaller in number. Economically is probably a different bag, and I am not as familiar with those numbers to make a claim.

Its easy to make protest movements toothless by making people believe that they are through media coverage
As soon as celebrities got involved in OWS it became apparent it was toothless because those people would never risk losing their place in society.
The tea party is a force in congress whether you like it or not. You may think they are silly but a large portion of america doesn’t. They are just about as fascist as it gets in our country and they couldn’t have existed if the environment wasn’t suitable for their growth. Fascism also grows out of times of crises, we have both the contrived war on terror and the financial crisis. If they get even more power, we’ll have to have this discussion again.

The majority may not be able to pinpoint exactly what's wrong, but they are right in knowing something's rotten in Denmark.
We have never been less free as a people, white, black or otherwise.
Our protection from fascism comes primarily from the Constitution. And we have a government that is hell-bent at eliminating the Constitution as a means of fundamental human defense against government oppression, aka fascism. In my opinion, fascism usually develops slowly, by increments measured in rights surrendered and abuse tolerated. Usually we are sold some bill of goods about how this new law or act will make us safer.
Examples of such creeping fascism in this country: Patriot Act, National Defense Authorization Act, Stop Online Piracy Act, Obamacare. Tolerance of government intrusions, such as government mass recording of talk shows, the TSA, and allowing the government to participate in criminal behavior in order to justify further destruction of the 2nd amendment.
In a way, these abuses pale in comparison to the economic tyranny that’s being visited upon us by a corrupt axis of evil between Wall St and DC, and especially the ridiculously out of control and completely unaccountable Federal Reserve. But that can be a topic for another day.

Tell me that Jefferson or Adams would have approved of the individual mandate
via the individual mandate, Congress has decided to regulate inactivity – not buying health insurance. all actions in life involve opportunity cost and are hence economic. thus, if the individual mandate for health insurance is constitutional, Congress will be able to force you to purchase anything under the sun. I don’t think that’s consistent with either the letter or the spirit of the Constitution.

and congress has regulated inactivity before – hotels and restaurants not serving blacks is one example.
as for your argument that all actions in life are economic, i’m fairly comfortable with supreme court precedent on this point that holds otherwise for constitutional purposes.
it is axiomatic that congress could tax you and then spend the proceeds of the tax to fund privately provided health insurance for you. congress chose to make it essentially one step (with the two step process for those who refuse to purchase insurance). i’m failing to see what federalism or liberty related concerns there are with making it one step.

I think you guys may be misunderstanding me
I’m certainly not trying to equate the current state of affairs with slavery, although I definitely believe that we are less free than generally thought. But the term slavery may have been a bit strong; perhaps serfdom would have been a better term. Under either situation, we are talking about people losing the ability to self determine their lives, control their individual outcomes, and to have inviolable human rights. The more obvious way of doing this is by physical force, but the more undetectable and even more efficient strategy – and therefore evil in its own right – is to manipulate the money supply.
I don't right disagree with your re-explanation of your argument

if artists can eliminate the corporate “middleman” and sell directly to their fans/customers, they could earn a living.
The challenge is for those artists needing to reach the critical threshold beyond which “word of mouth” can snowball and get enough attention for the artist so that they can make a living plying their craft.

Television shows come and go, those that are popular stay and those that suck are cancelled. Obviously some quality shows like Arrested Development get cancelled while American Idol trucks on, but it isn’t because some network exec is force feeding anyone content, it’s because people want to watch American Idol. Your real complaint is that those people are vapid and shallow, and it’s certainly a legitimate observation. But there are enough non-robots out there that appreciate good art and are willing to pay for it. Pffft
I never take seriously an article that uses words like Nickelback or Chevelle or Daughtry or Blink 182 or Disturbed without adjectives and/or nouns such as “shit”, “unfortunate”, “terrible”, “abomination”…
Aywho, I do agree with Rhubarb’s statements. The rock genre is living a low, too much Bieberettes nowadays. Too much "American Idol, "X- Factor". We are in an era where reality shows took away creativity from young generations who are watching these unfortunate culture of crap and quick lazy gratification which is siphoning art and culture away. No room for creativity.
I have more coworkers that know everything about Snooki and have not even a clue who is Thom Yorke. There is this Facebook, Twitter generation who spend countless of hours typing stuff in a Smartphone. When do they have time to create? For God sake, they don’t even listen to music anymore like we used to!!! They don’t buy albums. Their access to music, contrary to what is believed, is very limited, and sometimes is just whatever Mr. Simon Cowell wants it to be. They only download what is available, and what is available is usually cultural deprived. To expect new generations to form bands and produce outstanding new music is becoming difficult unless there is a Kurt Cobain too stuffed in drugs to give a crap of what is going on TV or Radios nowadays, and start being a rock artist without the contamination of nowadays society of gadgetism. Anyway, music has its cycle… and pretty soon rock will be saved by the next Guns and Roses or Nirvana.
And 2011 has very good albums. Some few I liked are Elbow "Build a Rocket Boys!", The Strokes "Angles", Fleet Foxes "Helplessness Blues", Opeth "Heritage", Radiohead "King of Limbs"… Yet, Coldplay’s new album was very disappointing.

The Eagles suck.
The reason music and movies and media in general from the past seem so much better is because time tends to parse away a lot of the crap. It’s how things work.
"Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.'"
Bad music always exists in any century
People with bad taste always exists in any century
The Eagles are not that bad. There are much much worse. Have you heard GG Allin? Kid Carpet? Spice Girls? Air Supply? Insane Clown Posser? the bands I mentioned above in my opening statement?
That’s not the point here. They point is a sudden decay in creativity in rock current times or the “recycling of ideas” and “keeping the status quo” to borrow from Rhubarb’s post above.
A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.

But if you persist in saying the Eagles suck, I will be forced to thrash you. That’s like saying Rod Stewart sucks. 2011 version, sure. 1969 version: History-making. The Eagles were the shit in their day, and Joe Walsh and Don Henley were geniuses. Yeah, I said it.

His 3 is still spotty
but his commitment to improving it and his overall jump shot is scary. Frankly if when it gets there he’ll be unstoppable. He’s top 5 right now (ESPN ranking Paul better right now was just wrong) and he might be Top 2-3 by season’s end. The only thing I see getting in the way was screwed up off season and the way this year is thrown together. His resistance to reaching out to better players to come play with him is maybe not the smartest but I love him for it.

by obnoxious american on Dec 31, 2011 1:09 PM CST up reply actions
Well Paul is great
and very efficient but for it stops there. You can say he’s the best point guard but that’s his max. Rose can be the best player period. That’s a tall order with players like James and Howard around but it shows where his max potential is as a comparison.
"Rooting for the Twins is just a roundabout way of rooting for a first-round playoff bye for the Yankees." by big_fun
indeed.
and it’s espn, so..
i can’t wait until they play the heat. it seems derrick responds to perceived slights, like ‘chris paul, best point guard’. i want him to destroy the idea of ‘lebron james, “best player”’.
by obnoxious american on Dec 31, 2011 2:00 PM CST up reply actions
i'm not sure a PG could run the pick-n-roll better than paul.
but rose was forced into being less efficient last year in order to win. his penetration and making the defense collapse while getting a shot up was the bulls’ best offense. it leads to more turnovers, lower FG%, and less assists (though a lot more offensive rebounds and putbacks for others). as rose showed last night, he can do ultra-efficient. he just hasn’t generally had the right team around him to make it a habit.
and rose has specifically used the word “efficient” recently when describing changes he’s making. he gets it.
but this team, at least right now, is best served by him maximizing all of his offensive output at the detriment of some efficiency. and as we’ve seen, just having a competent SG is gonna improve his assist numbers.
Some people get so rich they lose all respect for humanity. That's how rich I want to be.

People have short memories. From 2007-2009 Chris Paul was probably the second or third best player in basketball.
He got hosed out of a MVP because Kobe Bryant had the better storyline in 2008. It took a pretty serious knee injury for Paul to turn into the really good but not dominant player he is now. And I’d still take him over every point guard except Westbrook and Rose.

bill james or ron shandler
get the bill james handbook(just wait a little longer and you can get the spreadsheets online) for their hitting forecasts. The pitching is ok, but they leave off a ton of young pitchers because they dont have enough data.
I also know people who have been successful using ron shandler’s baseball forecaster as their primary source of prognostication.
look at the default rankings of your league host too(yahoo, espn, etc) to see who is over and undervalued. then sprinkle in a little average draft position and you should be all set to rake in the payouts. unless im in the league, of course!
thanks for the info
I was talking fantasy shit with someone at a party and for some reason was really interested (i play nothing), and one of the topics was if there was a market for pay-for-advice.
I use Shandler
He has plenty of original stuff. I usually get rotowire’s draft software which gives me their preseason projections. James is fine. BP’s is too convoluted. Finally I have found my $30 now $20 subscription to ESPN insider well worth it. A lot of sources put together in one neat and tidy place. Into today’s fantasy world you almost have to pay for something if you want a life. Updated and early information is critical.

and i wanted sunderland to win that match. maybe you only watch arsenal games but with the amount of soccer i watch i can’t keep track of all the bad decisions, some of which can really affect the outcome. most recently i recall, about three weeks ago, spurs getting literally hosed by the referee in the match against stoke.

its almost a crutch to blame the refs, but it’s hard not to. did you watch afc / fulham? i thought we were denied 2 pens and multiple fouls that fulham committed weren’t called. then again there’s no good reason we shouldn’t have been more clinical in the first half and scored at least two goals. funny game. yeah, i saw that game. (plus 4.5 other games over the weekend)
i don’t know which other penalty you think arsenal should have gotten but i thought gervinho dived. yeah, there may have been a little contact but not enough for a penalty or to warrant his reaction. (do you recall gervinho’s performance in his arsenal debut in the first game this season? i do. i, and many others, felt he dived to try to get a penalty. yeah, barton should have been sent off for assaulting him afterward but that’s another story.)
i tell you what, referees would make a lot more correct decisions if players weren’t constantly trying to con them. i know wenger said fulham brought in frei solely to get djourou a second card. that seems a little crazy to me. a card may have been more likely with frei in because he looked super quick and hard to deal with. i don’t see anything wrong with challenging a player who already has one yellow. of course diving to try to get a second yellow is no good. i remember thinking that on two separate occasions in the spurs-chelsea match a couple weeks ago, one time by each team, a player made an obvious attempt to get an opponent who was on a yellow already sent off.
just off the top of my head here are some controversial decisions from the weekend (i thought the berbatov one was correct, not sure about the barton one, and thought the others were incorrect):
- no call on terry hand ball on the goal line against villa. should have been a penalty and sending off.
- no call on ji who appeared to be offside before he scored sunderland’s goal to beat man city.
- no red card for lampard, only a yellow, for a late, crazy challenge on hammill against wolves.
- penalty for foul by berbatov given to blackburn against man united.
- red card for barton against norwich for what either was or was not a head butt. (generally speaking you can’t go wrong by giving barton a red card. he’s a bad guy.)
"michael gilhaney is an example of a man that is nearly banjaxed from the principal of the atomic theory. would it astonish you to hear that he is nearly half a bicycle?" ~~ sergeant pluck
i watched a bunch too, so many games this weekend!
contact is contact, i don’t think gervinho dived on his penalty. what is enough for a penalty if that isn’t? he clearly got the ball past his man, was tripped, and fell, preventing his goalscoring oppurtunity. do you have a different definiton or standard of contact for a penalty to be awarded? refs can give cards for excessive diving, and should do so more, it might help to deter it.
i don’t think its fair to excuse the ref’s poor and inconsistent decision making by putting it on the players. of course they’re trying to con them, it happens in every sport: basketball, baseball, american football, etc. players are always trying to plead for calls to go their way.
agree with your point on them going after Djorou after he was on a yellow, that’s just good strategy by fulham. my issue with his 2nd was that fulham repeatedly made similar fouls in their box area and really all over the pitch that were not called at all, let alone booked for. that to me is inexcusable. when Wenger said “he got it all wrong all on the same side”, i think that’s what he was referring to. and again i’m not trying to blame the loss on the ref, arsenal should’ve converted more of their chances, ultimately the loss is on them, not the ref. also, do you think Zamora dived on that just a bit? if you think Gervinho dived on his pen, then you must think Zamora dived on that.
barton was ranting on his twitter this morning about clubs suing the referees when they make or miss decisions that cost teams points. thought that was an interesting topic. it could certainly be argued that arsenal and i’m sure other clubs have lost points due to erroneous decisions. if its the difference between 4th and 5th, staying up and relegation, these are huge finanical impacts on clubs. something needs to be done about it, though I don’t know what.
Easy chief
We’re a community - Tdogg
i don't know what is enough for a penalty. i don't think gervinho tried even a little bit to stay on his feet.
like i said, i don’t think there was enough contact to cause his reaction. i think all he was looking for was a penalty.
of course i think it’s fair to excuse a poor decision by a referee, if it’s based on being bamboozled by a player. there’s a gigantic difference between pleading for a call to go your way and actively trying to deceive the referee. the way i look at it is the bigger problem is the players. the referee is trying to make correct calls while the player is trying to prevent him from doing so. unless of course you don’t believe the referee is impartial to begin with.
also, without having documentation, i believe there are more potential chances for a call to affect the outcome in soccer. (stuff like red cards and penalty kicks)
i don’t remember the zamora situation. i must not have thought much of it at the time.
you shouldn’t listen to joey barton.
"michael gilhaney is an example of a man that is nearly banjaxed from the principal of the atomic theory. would it astonish you to hear that he is nearly half a bicycle?" ~~ sergeant pluck
i guess we disagree on the extent of the dive, then.
it was very clearly in my mind a foul, regardless of any diving gervinho may have done. tripping is a foul. it happened in the box. penalty. did the ref or linesmen not see it? did he decide it wasn’t too reckless, careless, or excessive? i don’t know and i don’t understand their thought processes when deciding to not award clear penalties. if there was no contact then i could see your side but there very clearly was a trip.
the zamora situation was the moment Djorou got his second yellow and was sent off! pretty key moment.
Easy chief

?
i don’t know and i don’t understand their thought processes when deciding to not award clear penalties
you think they don’t award penalties sometimes even if they see them? i would think they call them when they see them. maybe if a player has a reputation for diving it can affect what a referee thinks he sees, i don’t know. (different situation but kind of related, AVB theorized that maybe lampard didn’t get sent off because the referee knew lampard didn’t have a reputation as a dirty player)
as for zamora, yeah, looked like he sort of exaggerated. thought it was a foul but not a card.

i have read interviews with former referees wherein they've admitted

here’s my attempt: they found evra to be credible. they felt that suarez’s explanation(s) lacked consistency and on occasion plausibility. both damien comolli (liverpool director of football) and dirk kuyt (suarez’s teammate) said the same thing at first about what suarez told them he said to evra when asked what he said after the match (suarez told comolli in spanish, which comolli is fluent in (or maybe not fluent. that was a point of contention. the referee said he was told comolli was fluent, comolli says he didn’t say he was fluent, just that he spoke spanish.) suarez talked to kuyt in dutch) but they both later said they had misunderstood exactly what suarez told them he said.
they did not feel that suarez is a racist but was acting in the heat of the moment and was trying to provoke evra into getting sent off.
suarez’s (liverpool’s) solicitors argued that evra made up the charges because he was mad that he was fouled by suarez and didn’t apologize.
the penalty they gave him (8 games) was made that long due to aggravating factors: 1) he breached his responsibility as a star player for one of the world’s best known clubs and undermined the FA’s “kick it out” campaign against racism. 2) he used the word (negro) multiple times. 3) he damaged the image of english football.
i think my two favorite parts are:
1) after the foul by suarez that started everything, evra began the verbal confrontation by saying, in spanish, “your sister’s cunt.” (apparently translates to something like “fucking hell”)
2) in an attempt to show how worked up evra was even long before the suarez incident, liverpool’s lawyers brought up the fact that evra argued with the referee about the coin toss at the beginning of the match. evra admitted that part. the coin had a blue side and a yellow side. when asked to call it he called yellow. it came up yellow but the referee let liverpool choose their side. evra stated whenever this coin is used (some type of FA coin) he always chooses yellow and that he would never choose blue because that is the color of manchester city.

Podcast I started getting into recently
Greg Proops’ The Smartest Man in the World.
I’m impressed by his ability to talk off-the-cuff for 75 minutes a week. Goes on a stage with a few topics in mind, and he’s got an extensive vocabulary for somebody who is largely making it up as he’s going along (presuming that’s the case).
Never cared for him on WLIIA. Was more of a Ryan Stiles- Colin Mochrie fan.

Can anyone recommend a decent Iranian history book? I guess I’m particularly interested in an overview of its past relations with the US, although I don’t want to restrict it to that, as I’m also interested in its culture and role in the region (more generally).

I didn't hate Martz like most did, but I'm certainly not upset that he's gone.
"I considered throwing a volley, but since I'm considerably closer to Ford City than Dodge City, I figure it might have been misinterpreted."
I hated that he totally refused to modify his offensive strategy when it clearly wasn't working.
I hated that he refused to allow Jay Cutler any sort of freedom on the field and either wouldn’t or couldn’t figure out a way to utilize the fact that Cutler could/can run a little bit. I’m a Martz hater. I wanted them both gone but never thought it would happen. Like the Cutler trade, I’m just not used to the Bears being this decisive and quick.

I'm not surprised that either is gone.
Their problem hasn’t been with firing offensive coordinators. Their problem has been hiring better ones. Crowton replaced by Shoop? Downgrade (but not much of one) Shoop replaced by Shea?? Downgrade (but, again, not much of one). Shea replaced by Turner – hey look, we’re in the Super Bowl in 2 years. Turner replaced by Martz? Downgrade.
Angelo hired Shea, Turner, and Martz. Hopefully the next GM has a clue.

It get crowded on weekends. At least it did 4 years ago when I lived on the northside. They do “Beer School” once a month. I bought tickets for my dad for Fathers Day. It was a hoot.
I dont know if they still do it
but I thought it was like either on Wed or Thurs nights they would find local restaruants that specialized in food from around the world and have them cater in a nice spread…something like 10 or twelve bucks got you a great plate of food and two beers. That was years ago so I dont know if they still do it or not.

So I'm thinking the staff may be simply too busy to answer the phone.
I left a message inquiring about campus visits, and sent a few emails. We may just go anyway (four hour drive) and pop in to the campus visiting center and work from there.
It also looks like getting from the campus to the White Sox stadium is pretty awkward unless you want to go right through a rough section. But then, if I’m at the U of C, I won’t have the time nor the money for more than a few games a year.
We play on the "bad" side of town, we were supposedly cursed, and we wear black. Let's play.
it's not that awkward of a trip, MLK up to 35th/31st (which moves really fast), then directly west
though admittedly i drove that route. and you’ll make the time and find the money, if only to GTFO of HP for a bit if you’re living there.

Garfield bus is to the Red Line
as the Family Circus bus is to the Yellow Line?
Now now, hear me out. Garfield is long and drawn out, a three-panel nightmare with little redemption. It’s the go-to comic when people think generic non-punchlines. More scary than funny. However, Family Circus is one panel, breezy, boring and sterile, yet very subtly insightful. I think the comparisons are apt.

my feet suck so I can't see wearing them.
I’ve had too many arch problems so I’m afraid to try. There was an interesting story in MH last year about bare foot runners from another country. The article contends the bare foot runner’s feet are the strongest and we weaken out feet by over-supporting with various running shoes. So there’s that. Actually, I’ve gotten away from “support” shoes and my feet have strengthened some. I think I’ll stay with what I have.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, 1/2 pack of cigarettes...it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Vibrums are faddish.
People are supposedly wanting to get back to “natural” running, as God intended, and are killing themselves by running to far, too fast, in these things. I believe <5% of runners wear them. Think Zola Budd running barefoot and you’ll get the idea – that today’s Nikes/New Balances/adidas/Asics have gone overboard, created too MUCH padding/stabilization/etc. and that the shoes are causing running injuries.
Some folks swear by ’em. Not me. I know a few folks who have them and no one uses them for serious marathon runs.
We're all here because we're not all there.
there seem to be shoes coming on the market that are traditional running shoes, but more minimally padded
Not “toe shoes,” but not those big wedge-heel running shoes either. I think maybe that’s the proper place to be. Allows for forefoot running, but still provides cushioning. All I know is it seems to take people a really long time to re-train the way they run. I’m not a runner, but I know enough of them to be surrounded by people either wearing or talking about those godawful toe shoes.
Dave Martinez woulda had that.
Yep -
I listen to the podiatrists describing the injuries folks bring on themselves by training too hard, too fast in those things. Some folks wear them to look “cool” but would never run in them.
We're all here because we're not all there.
Looking to pick up some decent running shoes soon.
Any recommended brands or advice you care to dish out?

I just bought a pair of Asics Gel 1170 before X-mas.
They do have some stability as I overpronate. My 2nd pair. Last pair similar to these I had for 2 years (granted-more than you should) & I logged many many miles on them over various terrians. The shoes held up extremely well. Also, if you have wide feet the Asics are better IMO. I tried on Saucony & they were too narrow. Former New Balance user & I liked them as well.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, 1/2 pack of cigarettes...it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
my cousin has a pair but injured himself not by training too hard, too fast
but by (wait for it) stubbing his toe into a tree root with those on. mercy.
I love seasons too. That's why I live in a place that skips the shitty ones.
hey, you're a runner.

Asics have worked best for me,
and I have flat feet and am bowlegged and thus my feet don’t hit the ground flat. No knee/hip issues, ever.
We're all here because we're not all there.
2nd
Same issues. I’ve had reconstructive knee surgery. Also fasciitis, shin splints, etc. from running. I run on average 12-18 miles/week depending on weather, how I feel & all that. As I stated above, Asics have been great. I go to the store because you can try them on & get advice from sales person (which is usually a runner themselves). I’ve never ordered out of catalog or online but Eastbay does a fair job of telling styles of shoes.

Remembering
I just heard of a guy that was our Apprenticeship coordinator when I was in school that just passed away. While the news is sad, it brings back a very good memory of him. His name was Mike Tongue. When I was a 2nd year apprentice and my wife & I were struggling financially, he helped me (us) out. I remember not having enough money to pay for my books and the rule at the time was they had to be paid for BEFORE school started. No books=no starting school. I would have been totally screwed because if you miss school, you get kicked out of the program. We were in a hell of a pinch & I explained our plight to Mike hoping to get some levity. He paid the balance we couldn’t come up with for my books and never asked for a dime in return. If I recall correctly, it was around $200.00.
Rest in peace Mike, I’ll never forget you.

so married guys out there... what do you think about drinking with your wife?
am i the only one who struggled with it? when we were single it was fun going to the bar and getting loaded. after we got engaged it usually led to an argument. after we got married i banned going out drinking together and it seemed to work well. this past year we’ve started going again… and its been ok so far.
I truly think they always drive you nuts… but when we first were going out it usually led to some good banging… and now it leads to a bang (which usually doesn’t happen if the kids are around).
after engagement and early marriage though… you usually bang enough to where you don’t feel like dealing with the drunk wife.

It was great, going out drinking with me just wasnt an option.
It kind of set a precendent where she doesnt really like to go out now.
Sure once in a while we go out with her girls and I throw shots down their thoats but for the most part ‘going out’ is something I do. Hence- keeper status.
i had a 19 year old girlfriend when i just turned 22.
it didn’t last long because she was jealous that i went out a lot and she couldn’t go… and why would i want to go do that when i know she cant… and what am i doing at the bar… blah blah blah
i was a dog at that point in time so her concerns were justified. lol.
