for the lazy
2) Nestor Molina, RHP, Grade B+: Ranking the Blue Jays pitching prospects is quite difficult. Although Molina hasn’t received as much press as some of the other guys, his performance was impeccable, I think his stuff is underrated, and he’ll get to the majors sooner than the others. Despite his season, he is still underrated by a lot of people.
I DON’T KNOW I GOT IT FROM MY NEE-NAW WHEN I WAS BUT FIVE
I'm happy with the return.
Not too thrilled about the now implied rebuilding.

...maybe this just opens the door for Reed?

I'm thinking Crain is handed the reins.
Provided he is still here. I thought he was who we would send North.

scrolling down on that thread sickels said he relied on stats and scouting
but thinks that the scouting is underrating his stuff

i think we know which direction the white sox are going when they trade their "closer" for a pitcher in A ball.

I don't like this trade at all.
Sergio wasn’t a high salary guy ($1 mil this year) and was under control until 2016.
Nester Molina is a borderline prospect since he’s in A ball. He won’t be ready for 3 or 4 years. This is

Amazing strikeouts
Power pitchers sometimes have arm troubles though. I wonder how long until hes up, hes been in the jay’s system since he was 18.
The Sox have proven they're better than most at keeping guys healthy...

Wow
I actually like it. I don’t think Santos is the fit for long term closer. Molina looks good. Well its a rebuilding year now.
We wee lucky with Santos good move.
Now lets pry Teheran from Braves
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
well, at least he's still in the american league. the throng that show up for him at angels games just need new shirseys.
and don’t have to go all the way up to chavez ravine.
I love seasons too. That's why I live in a place that skips the shitty ones.
I wonder if this isn't a case of...
Kenny realizing that a “closer” isn’t that valuable per se, and now having a manager who won’t fight him on that front?
I know the money was manageable, even cheap. But didn’t Sergio intimate a sense of entitlement at some point last year? Saying that he’d earned the “position”? Maybe that plays into it too.

but did ozzie really fight him on that front in practice?
ozzie was less conventional that most managers when it came to the bullpen and ‘closers’

Chances are we won’t need one, just hope the return was fair. Blue Jays gm certainly seems to know what he’s doing up there.

Some guy on Molina
1. RHP Nestor Molina — This is the only place you’ll see Molina as Toronto’s No. 1 prospect. Sorry, folks, but I’m believing my own eyes and ignoring the grossly inaccurate scouting reports. The 22-year-old was Verlander-like in Double-A, dominating hitters to the tune of a 13.5 strikeouts/9 innings. Awesome stuff. Fastball (92-94-mph), devastating split, changeup. Pitching coach Pete Walker told me his stuff is “as good as I’ve seen at this level.” Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus once tweeted, “Not a ton of stuff, a finesse type without much upside.” Um, no.
by Craig Grebeck on Dec 6, 2011 12:09 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
Well, yeah.
Plus that guy’s (Kevin Gray, NH Union-Leader) report is the most glowing you’ll find. Some people are tepid about Molina’s ceiling. I don’t think you can ignore the peripherals, though you have to take them with a large grain of salt given that he’s not been tested much.

Yea, probably the end for Thornton.
It was proved in money ball that you can make bullpen guys out of any pitcher, so trading away bullpen pieces might not be the worse thing that could happen. (Please don’t trade away Konerko)
This is going to be cool...

Good news.
If Santos is going out (and as a cost-contained closer, there certainly is a market for him), there ought to be no illusion about contending next year. Now the question is whether Williams can translate Floyd, Quentin, and Danks into useful parts of the next good Sox team.
Huh? The Sox have some excellent BP arms. Why does this mean no contention?
"People of privilege will always risk their complete destruction rather than surrender any material part of their advantage."
John Kenneth Galbraith
If he moves Santos, why wouldn't he be moving more?
Given the dead weight on the payroll, why would he move a cost-controlled closer unless there was intent to reload the farm system?
Amusing note: Toronto had Molina as an infielder and moved him to the mound in 2008. Fitting guy to get for Santos.
Maybe because he's a mouthy kid who whined about a defined role...
and then sucked for a week after getting it.
Right now, they have 3 other guys who can “close”.

sox scouting thoughts.
Buster Olney
CWS’s scouts view of Molina: Potentially a front-end-rotation guy. 4-pitch mix with great command. Plus makeup and athleticism, as well.
Kenwo4life=ratings. Just call me Mr. USA Today.
The return seems light.
The closer’s market is quite interesting as we’ve seen (Papelbon, Bell), and Sergio is signed to a very friendly deal with reasonable buyout options once he gets bigger bucks. Molina’s numbers are gaudy, but this is his first year as a full-time starter and we don’t have much of a sample in AA.
I think KW should have negotiated more considering how deep the Jays system is.
Psht. Kenny never gets maximum value.

I think the 5.22 ERA after his intial scoreless 20 inning scoreless streak scared KW smewhat.
BTW, not saying that ERA is all that important of a metric but I’ll take the young B+ starting pitcher prospect over a fungible closer any day.
This space is available.
Right now I like it, the Sox have other options to take the reigns of an overrate BP role
However, I am not going to pretend I am nearly as well versed on these type of things as some others around here.
just a reminder of Santos' contract:

So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.

Baseball America editor on Score said they had Molina ranked 18th in Toronto org
but he immediately becomes #2 or #3 in White Sox org behind Addison Reed.
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
18th? holy fuck. that can't be right.
Some people get so rich they lose all respect for humanity. That's how rich I want to be.
seems like the opinion is varied on the guy
but don’t the White Sox often do pretty good with under the radar pitching prospects?
Sickels gave the Jays 17 B- or better prospects and four borderline after that
and still shocked a few people with omissions, the Jays system is stupidly deep and there is no-one that truly stands out from the pack after D’Arnaud, so you have a bunch of 20 or so prospects that are all interchangeable. Molina is good, he has a short track record though as he’s still being stretched out to a full starters load. Given that, his place in that bunch of 20 is going to fluctuate a lot.
I really wouldn’t worry about it too much.
Does this move say something about the 2012 starting rotation, 2013, or the rotation further down the road?
Or “none of the above”?
White Sox 2012: Helplessly hoping.
This guy would probably be late 2012 if he progresses through system and if we end up trading Danks/Floyd now or midseason
Probably 2013 if everything progresses nicely
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
Blech
If you want to rebuild, fine. But I’m tired of Kenny trading players with value for players only he thinks will bust out. Sickels is fine, but I’ll go with the pro in Goldstein who pegged Molina as a fringe pitcher. The BA 18th ranked player in Toronto for Santos is a horrible trade.
Can’t wait to see what junk they get for Q and Danks.
Also, they should do Konerko and give him away to whatever team he wants to go to…he didn’t sign up to finish his career amid suckage.

I didn't realize that Goldstein is always correct
The Sox should try really hard to hire the guy, it would be great to have a “pro” that never makes a mistake or ranks a player incorrectly.

Really surprised Williams didn’t talk AA into giving him Teahen back.
