Mark Buehrle: In Memoriam
May 21, 1999 - December 7, 2011
We are gathered here today to remember Mark Alan Buehrle. He came to us for $167,000 as a draft-and-follow from the 38th round of the 1998 amateur draft. Today, he leaves us for a four-year, $58 million contract with the Miami Marlins (per Ken Rosenthal).
My favorite Mark Buehrle memory is when he came out of the bullpen in the 14th inning to get the last out in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series, recording the only save of his career.
Please add your memory - or at least your name - to the guestbook below.

I'll never forget
the look on his face after the remarkable catch in center field saved his perfect game. That smirk of “Holy Shit! This is really happening.” He is one of my four favorite Sox of all-time. He’ll be missed.

He's a guy I can't get mad at.
Went and got paid and stays with a manager with whom he’s comfortable. Good for Mark.
Its about the perfect situation to not root against him
Except for his manager of course. Guillen doesn’t deserve Buerhle.

It's been months in the making.
But now that it’s official, it just… really sucks. He’s my favorite player because he’s left-handed like me and he’s managed to be a really good player without very good stuff. For a guy who was drafted in the 38th round to make it to the major leagues two years after being drafted is really something special, and I’m gonna miss the hell out of him, his consistency, his fun-loving, easy-going attitude, and his two-hour games.
But now I can’t even be a Marlins fan because fucking Ozzie Guillen is there.

come to the treeouts you big dumb bitch.
My favorite Buehrle memory is also my least favorite, I have told it many times but feel compelled to do so, one more time
My buddies and I bought tickets to a Rays/White Sox game in 2009 in March off of my dad’s season ticket group. I had been sitting there since I was 5 years of age. I took on a new job and I couldn’t justify taking a day off to go to the Sox game. I was sitting in training with my boss and my phone was blowing up. My buddies were texting me that there was a perfect game going on and I just about shit my pants. My wife was preggo so my boss asked me if everything was allright. I told him what was going on and he laughed his ass off. I gave my ticket to my brother in law who just moved from North Carolina to Illinois and had never been to a professional baseball game. I figured out the chances of me being at a perfect game were less than winning Powerball. My brother in law was too drunk to recall the game and still doesn’t really appreciate the rarity. He gave me his ticket to send to Buehrle to sign, I wrote him a nice letter about how he and I both just had children and i would pass this piece of memorabilia down through generations but it was never returned……because my dumb ass forgot the self addressed stamped envelope. I am still devastated. My buddy Don still makes fun of me and it is a running joke in the office.
I was lucky enough to witness Buehrle’s last game as a White Sox with SouthsideExpat, Teahenny Penny, his little brother and my borther in law in late September.
He was probably my favorite player ever and seemed like a guy who could actually sit in a dive bar in Elgin and have a beer with me and fit in just fine.
Peace out Buehrle and good luck. I think i hate Kenny more than ever. It actually does hurt.

Marlin contracts do not have a no-trade clause
and that stadium deal is going to be a disaster. SEC investigating the financing and they need to be at 2.5 million in attendance just to break even from what I’ve heard (and that’s without the huge payroll increase). Unless they have cocaine vendors and stripper poles in the bleachers, this ends badly and will be another player purge in a couple years. They overpaid for every free agent and don’t have anywhere near the revenue stream of the Yankees or Red Sox to make up for free agent misses. I highly doubt MB finishes this deal in Marlins gear.

I think this will shoot his lifetime earnings over the $100 million mark (heh). Good for him.
I’ll give a shout to the season where he dueled Mark Mulder twice (or was it three times?) in ~90 minute games. Buehrle may have even lost both games, but it was still neat.
Also — the homer in Milwaukee.
I really wanted to go to that series to check out Milwaukee/Miller Park.
Judging by the cheers following the home run, it sounds like I wasn’t the only one. But hell, Cubs fans outnumber Brewers fans there three series a year.

I took my then 5 yr old daughter to the Sox-Brewers game when MB hit his homer
It wasn’t her first game, but it was the first game she really watched. He hit the HR and she thought it was great, and I kept trying to explain how rare it was. It didnt matter that she didnt grasp that fact, I thought, someday she will.
Because of that game, she got a favorite player.
A month later, he threw the perfect game. I tried again to explain how rare that was. She didnt fully get it, but someday she will.
We adopted a black-and-white kitten that October (born on the day of his perfect game, can you believe it?). She named it Buehrle. She couldnt spell it then, but I knew that someday she would (and does now).
I’ll tell her about MB leaving the Sox tonight, or maybe tomorrow. She’ll hurt a little, but not as much as me. She doesnt know yet the feeling of pride in having a great player and person on your favorite club for such a long time. And how it hurts when it ends. But she will.

I disagree
and in fact I now think that Kenny’s never been a good GM. He’s never made a good move since getting Floyd and Danks and to an extent Quentin. Ever since It’s been a clusterfuck ranging from Swisher to Hudson to Teahen. Some moves are defensible like the Peavy trade and of course the Dunn singing was a no brainer but his success record is strongly lacking since 2005. I doubt whether he even tries to analyze trades at all or if he just takes shots in the dark with the hopes of getting lucky like he did in 2005. I mean, Pods? Really?

i never really liked dunn… but even i figured he’d be good for 35 and 100. rios was an all star on toronto and whether or not people didn’t like him… he was still an upgrade over wise/anderson/pods. peavy was a little questionable, but he did the same shit in 04 with freddy and contreras. it worked out then. unfortunately the whole organization and peavy himself failed in 09 trying to push him to start 3 meaningless games.

buehrle said there would be no hometown discount this year.
i’m sure kenny said get what you can and then come to us like he did with konerko. only i think the offers for buehrle were way more than anyone (including buehrle) thought they would be. If they went anymore than 3/39 i would have had a problem with it.
Kenwo4life=ratings. Just call me Mr. USA Today.
maybe they didn't go to 3/39
maybe they only offered 3/36? What I’m saying is, maybe the WS lowballed him so badly that he decided to “go fish”. If they had given him a decent offer a few months ago then maybe he would’ve taken it instead of playing the market.
Still, had they offered 3/39 he would’ve been a good bet to provide that value. I’m confident Buehrle would’ve maintained 3-4 wins per year over the next 3 years. Very confident.

My favorite memory of that game
is the fact that josh fields played first base. oh and ramon castro was catching Buehrle for the first time. seriously. how improbable is that?
And the home plate umpire was Eric Cooper,
who was also the umpire behind the plate for Buehrle’s 2007 no-hitter. Oh, and he also wears number 56.

And Pods was in center for 8 innings, right?
Maybe the worst defensive lineup to back a perfecto.
Josh Fields’ slam in that game is such a comical footnote.

You are not wrong to walk away at this time. But do not think that you can fashion something out of tinsel and plastic and call it the White Sox.

I know it's been said by everyone
but what I’ll miss the most is everything. Growing up through the 2000s with Buehrle and that incredible ‘05 season, the perfect game (I mean, come on – that catch), picking Sosa off, the tarp dives, the Opening Day between the legs play, just what he means to a franchise and a kid who loves baseball and lives for the White Sox. Dammit, I know it’s cheesy and melodramatic, but Buehrle has earned that. He’s a classy guy and one of the cornerstones of 2005. I know we couldn’t afford to pay him what the Marlins did, and it’s the right move to walk away, but it just hurts to know he won’t be wearing the black and white pinstripes next season. I can’t be angry today, I don’t want to think about Dunn, Rios, Peavy, etc; I’m just sad to see him go.

Happy for him.
He gave me some of my fondest memories as a White Sox fan and he doesn’t have to stick around for the mediocrity this franchise will be mired in for the next couple of years.
Best of luck to him in Miami, and I hope there’s another no-hitter or two left in that arm.

This is the most depressing time ever as a Sox fan
Seeing players just get unloaded is so shitty, and I have said it before and say it again. Both Kenny and Ozzie should be gone. I didn’t like that Ozzie left and said I would root for him in Miami, and now Buherle being there makes it easier.
Kenny Williams, thanks for the World Series, but your last 3 years makes it feel like that happened 20 years ago.
It is hard for me to show interest in this team when Kenny is in charge. Robin Ventura???? Trading Santos for who?
MB had to take the money. The Sox would never come close to that offer. It’s a real shame.
I can tell you guys this, my favorite memory of number 56 was without question the perfect game as most of you say. However, I gotta tell you, I was at the first game of the season in 2005, and he pitched a hell of a game, and gave us all a feeling of hope that year. And that hope almost fizzled, but didn’t go to waste. And that last time that year he came out of the bullpen in the 14th. I will always remember that year not only for the title, but just that team. They were a fun bunch to watch.
Mark was an unbelievable pitcher but just your average ordinary guy. Did things that were nuts on the field. From the home run, to the greatest play I have ever seen to just the guy sliding on tarps and being funny. I will always remember his personality and his care free attitude.
Thanks for everything number 56. You will always be one of the best!!!!

Free time and age are inversely proportional until retirement.
But when the little things that seemed important were less pressing, I would try and find time for a White Sox game. The first criterion on whether to watch was whether Buehrle was throwing.
Sometimes he wasn’t but I still watched. But it was a hell of a lot more likely that I would find a way to make it work if he was.
A Sad Day
Mark Buehrle, thank you very much for 2005, the World Series, the save. Thank you for the no-hitters. Thanks for the perfect game. Thanks for the great career fielding (the flip through the legs) and the killer pick off move. Although I never met you, thanks for appearing to be a class act. Thank you for having fun, sliding around the tarp, how many of us would have loved to do that.
I think another part of the reason I like him so much is, like Konerko, he comes across as a decent, regular guy. A guy you could hang out and have a beer with. Someone more like you and me (with a larger bank account) than say a steroid loaded, spotlight hogging, prima donna.
Thanks for the memories Mark.

I’ve been a Sox fan for 50 years now and through all the pitchers who’ve taken the mound (Wilhelm,Wilbur,Black Jack, Navarro, Wells, so many others) Mark Buerhle grew to to be quietly special. than being in the ballpark the night your favorite player throws a no-hitter. that will always be my top memory of buehrle, 4/18/07 was a damn cold night but man was it awesome. Needless to say, this fucking sucks!
I've only been active on SSS for about a year,
but on Buehrle day there was always a different feel to the place. Some days there would be a feeling of dread or anticipation, anxiousness, even ambivalence. But never on Buehrle day- it was always an excited buzz. It was something everyone was looking forward to. There aren’t many things like that in life, and I’m glad we could cherish them while they were around. Mark Buehrle is a rare, rare man.
I just finished bottling a bunch of beer and basically putting this out of my mind, and now looking at this thread again I’m right back to feeling like a six year old who just watched his dog run out into traffic. I fully understand.
Like when Frank came to bat, you could count on the unexpected so often from Mark. And “count on” to me says it all – how reliable, how professional, how “regular” of a guy he seems. Completely accessible, without guile during his interviews, almost like when Elvis first was interviewed – you could not take your eyes off him, and you were amazed at how honest and unaffected he came across. What a genuine fellow.
Joke if you will, but this hurts about as badly as any personal or professional loss I’ve experienced – and I knew in my gut he was gone after the KW interview about 2 weeks ago. Some things you cannot prepare for. I love my team, and I believe Mark deserves full market value, but to me this is akin to what a Cardinal fan might feel if Pujols leaves for greener pastures. To me there are 2 guys that will always embody the turn of the century Sox – Paulie and Mark. And Mark’s gone.
Man, we’d better get some hope in return for some of these losses we will experience this offseason.

2005 ALCS game 2
Although the Sox nearly swept their way through the 2005 playoffs, don’t forget we lost Game 1 to the Angles in the ALCS at home. Losing Game 2 would have been really bad. It was a tight game throughout and Buehrle pitched an outstanding 9 innings and would have come out for a 10th if AJ hadn’t stolen first. Buerhle’s great performance got lost in all the controversy over AJ but it was one to remember.
I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing
During his No Hitter, Perfect Game, and unbelievable between the legs flip. The World Series Championship didn’t hut his legacy either. He will be missed
#56
So many memories: how he contributed to the 2000 team winning the division, the 19 win season in 02, the no hitter and perfect game, the save in Gm 3 of the 05 World Series, the flip to 1st on Opening Day of 10. Just too many to mention. My 2nd favorite White Sox player ever (other than #35) Opening Day just won’t be the same this year. Definitely going to root for him to do well, but not the Marlins.
long term perspective
My saddest days as a Sox fan:
12/1/1970 — When I first understood that my favorite team could really trade my favorite player.
10/8/1983 — Stuck alone in St. Louis, finding a place to watch the game, and seeing the Sox lose to Baltimore to end their first postseason series of my lifetime. The only time I ever cried over a baseball game, made all the worse because nobody else in the whole city cared at all.
10/26/2005 — Best and worst baseball day of my life. Sox win it all, but Dad didn’t live to see it. The man went from birth to death without ever seeing his team as champions. Got to share it with my kids, though.
12/7/2011 — Saw it coming. Knew it was going to happen. Still hurts anyway. Hoped he’d go to St. Louis, play for his hometown team and torment the Cubs.
Well, like I always say, I always have fun at the ball game. Sometimes the Sox play well. The rest of the time, they still sell beer.

The story that defines the man, although I may not remember it 100% correctly, maybe someone else can correct
I believe it was the 2005 allstar break Cotts gave Buehrle a lift home since they were both St. Louis folk. They didn’t live in the same town though so when Cotts truck approaches Buehrle’s exit he tells him to stop the vehicle. Buehrle gets out, grabs his duffle bag and tells Cotts he’ll be fine. So you have an uncomfortable rookie, powerless to stop the staff “ace” (could i call him that without smug backlash?) multimillionaire from walking off by himself in the middle of a pennant race (i know it wasn’t, give me some rhetorical leeway). I always thought that was a grand yarn.

I am sad but am glad for Mark, he deserves every dollar
I never thought we were going to keep him, So I didn’t think I would be all the upset when he left. When I heard that he had signed with the fish on the way home for work, it still didn’t hit me. It wasn’t until I turned on Comcast and saw him and the great moments that he provided did it really hit me. He is one of my favorite athletes in any sport. So down to earth, never let his fame get to him and is just an all around great person. That impresses me just as much as his baseball skill. Doesn’t get much better thatn Buehrle.
In addition to all the awesome moments mentioned above, I will miss his sincerity
To me, Buehrle was special because you could see that he truly enjoyed his triumphs and he would take responsibility for pitching poorly when he pitched poorly – a level of personal accountability that is rarely seen.
Buehrle is a likable personality that pitched a no-hitter and perfect game as a soft-tossing lefty, contrasted to an asshole like Nolan Ryan or Clemens, who threw so hard and were so tenacious that you expected that they would achieve such greatness. I suppose that we often expect over-achievers to be jerks, so it is especially refreshing when someone like Buehrle does so well.
Good luck, Mark. May you kick ass while your new team sucks ass.

I just woke up to the news
I’m going to the pub tonight. I will drink to Mark Buehrle .. I will drink for Mark Buehrle. I will get drunk. Then I will come home and watch the perfect game.
Fan For Life
Don’t normally post, but couldn’t skip the memoriam post for Buehrle. For myself, I have the same memories that many of you also do: the perfect game, the World Series, his amazing efficiency.
My quick story I wanted to share was when I took a friend to see the Sox last year for the 09-10. It was the first time she had actually been to a baseball game. By a stroke of luck Buehrle was pitching that game and he did wonderfully. She was amazed at just how damn good he was and liked him right from the start. Thanks to him, the Sox gained a fan that day. Unfortunately we never got to see a game together again with him pitching, but each time we got to the ballpark the first question was: “Is Buehrle pitching today?” and if not she was disappointed. She even got his jersey too. Part of me hopes she doesn’t lose interest in the Sox with Buehrle gone, but can’t say I’d blame her for being disappointed. The first real player you connect with and latch on to sticks with you for a long time.
It’s a shame to see him go and I watched the rumors while shaking my head. Don’t think many down in Miami will realize how lucky they got today. I just hope he gets appreciated down there and not any neglect. Someone else may become a fan of baseball just by watching him play. I’ll echo the sentiments above that I hope once he enters the Hall of Fame that he would be in a Sox hat. (raises glass) Here’s to the great memories.

Don’t think many down in Miami will realize how lucky they got today.
Way to hit my hard in my gut, decision by dude I’ve never met.
The lords of dawn are men such as Mr. Lucy.
I have let a night of booze and tears simmer my stew of disappointment.
And what I shall miss the most, in no particular order:
1- The sheer professionalism of the man. I am reminded of “Hurricane” by Dylan. “Its my work he’d say, and I do it for pay, and when its all over I just go on my way”
2- The Living Example. – Caught every first pitch on days he didnt start. Rookies, take note- Allstar, Perfecto, WS, he never got above the team.
3- Lack of Pretention: That tarpslidin, grinnin, country boy was NEVER anyone other than himself. No angsty, overemoting theatrics, He was just Mark.
And God Help me, I am weeping ALL FUCKING OVER AGAIN writing this.

Well..
Seeing as everyone has covered most of the fondest about MB, I have to go with one of my favorites…that crazy defensive play of the year when he scooped the ball and tossed the ball between his legs to PK for an out. Can’t remember for the life of me who we were up against though
For me it was the No-No
I’m sad. Never wanted to see this happen. Thank you for everything Mark.
Sabermetrics hurt my head, just give me the facts.
Getting picked off
@ 2nd @ the Rockies after hitting a double. Loved the little giggle as he left the field hanging his head.

Lucky me
I got a 2005 WS ball signed by Ozzie, Buerhle, PK and AJ this summer. Now there are only 2 left.

Good bye, Mr. Buehrle
You worked your way into becoming one of my all time favorite pitchers… and players. We will miss your pitching, sure, but also your attitude. Who will bring the clubhouse a bit of levity now?
I do, barely, remember his first appearance for the Sox. I remember thinking “this kid has a lot better control than that Garland kid. I think he’ll be good.” Little did I imagine just how consistent and good he’d be for us. I always looked forward to that one of five days he’d be pitching just a little bit more than the others. I’ll miss that.

I don't think I've ever posted this

I’m pretty sure this was the 2007 Fan Appreciation Day. I remember how genuinely happy they both seemed to be when I asked them to take a picture with me. It just made the moment even better knowing that they were enjoying themselves and not just being nice because they had to.
I was also at his no-hitter that year. The Sox were offering half-price lower level tickets, so on a whim my mother and I decided to go. What a great game that was.

You know, I never noticed that before
Maybe it was an extra in case the first one ran dry.
